Dr Echendu Damian, an Optometrist, says more than 11.2 million people will lose their ability to see properly by 2020 due to the effect of glaucoma worldwide. Damian, who is the Chairman of the Nigerian Optometric Association, FCT Chapter, said this in Abuja on Monday on the sidelines of a walk organised by the Ophthalmological Society of Nigeria, as part of activities to mark the World Glaucoma Week. According to him, already glaucoma had rendered 4.5 million blind gblobally. He said that the walk was organised to create awareness on the menace of glaucoma and advised the public to ensure that it examined its eyes at least once a year. “Glaucoma is the silent thief of sight. It’s a group of diseases that lead to damage to the optic nerve, the nerve that sends information to the brain, for one to see. “And it is estimated that globally, about 4.5 million people have been blind due to glaucoma; and it is also projected that by the year 2020 about 11. 2 million will lose their sight due to glaucoma. “So, what we are doing today is to enlighten the public on this scourge and to let them know that it’s very important for them to go to an eye clinic and have their eyes examined at least once every year. “Why we are saying this is because glaucoma is a condition that does not come with any sign or symptom. “One can wake up one day and find out that he or she is not seeing. And by the time he or she gets to the hospital you find out that its glaucoma that has caused it.’’ The chairman said though glaucoma could not be treated, its progression could be slowed down to prevent blindness if diagnosed early. “We are having free screening in all clinics and all the general hospitals in the FCT for glaucoma. “So, from today (Monday) till Friday, members of the public have been invited to avail themselves of the opportunity to go to the eye clinics in town, go to the general hospitals in Kubwa, in Asokoro, in Wuse, in Maitama, in the State House Medical Centre, in Gwagwalada Specialist Hospital, in other private eye clinics in town and have their eyes screened for glaucoma for free.” Damian, who said that there was no known cause of glaucoma, explained that some of the conditions that could encourage its emergence were increase in eye pressure, short sightedness and family history. He said that glaucoma was more common in black people and people above the age of 40 years were also at risk. “If you are above 40 years of age, it’s also expedient that you will have your eyes checked because it’s also common with advancing age.’’ NAN reports that members of the all the ophthalmological societies in the FCT participated in the walk. The walk commenced from Berger through Wuse market carrying placards and distributing flyers, after which a health talk on glaucoma was given. Some of the placards read: “190,000 Nigerians are diagnosed with glaucoma yearly’’; “Half the people with glaucoma do not know they have it’’; and “If you change your glasses frequently, get screened for glaucoma’’. |

2011 Big Brother Africa winner, Karen Igho has lambasted her fans over comments made for her “Wabs” exposure at the just concluded AfricaMagic Viewers Choice Award (AMVCA) held last week Saturday in Lagos. Karen had gone to the event wearing a black gown which had a see-through in her chest area thereby exposing her “Wabs” to the whole world. This was highly criticised by many who lashed out at the Warri-born Naija FM OAP for indecently dressing to such an event that was beamed live on a cable station. Also, the issue brought about her reported “Wabs” implant. Not happy about the comments, Karen took a swipe on her fans and bitterly condemned them. She said, “even if I did implant how is dat your business is it your body or money if not shut the f up. Old news, wats new?” Karen has always flaunted her ‘silicon’ “Wabs”. Some tag her as an attention seeker.

Virgin Finder: Congrats to the ever boastful Igbos.yeah, time will tell.. lets wait and see if they will heed |
Afam4eva: We may not be very industrialized but we're industralized enough to get sponsorship for all the clubs in the league. Even the teams in the lower division. I see no reason why the likes of MTN, Etisalat, Glo, Innoson, Shell, Chevron, Mobile, Eko hotels, Sheraton, Bolingo, Coscaris, Airtel, Dangote, Ibeto, GTB, UBA, First Bank, Eco bank and other companies in NIgeria should not adopt a NIgerian team for sponsorship. But the only kind of sponsorship i hate is title sponsorship. They should not make any team to change their name to reflect their sponsor's name.Your post makes a lot of sense! |
Afam4eva: Yes, Enyimba's color is blue. They have the most recognizable jersey in Nigeria.Kano Pillars is yellow and green, the Sai Masu gida boys |

Biyi1471: You make money and your wife spend it... becareful... What would happen when you don't make money? BTW, your wife already had money to spend before you were born...Hahahahaha... They make a good couple though. Deola too has a big shop in Abuja CBD |
gbosaa: Pls why do people call them ..sooting..instead of shooting stars?.i saw sooting/sutin and thought it was mistakes till i noticed lot of people spelling same(sooting). It's the way the Ibadan people pronounce Shooting 'sootin' in their Ibadan parlance. That's why everyone calls or adopts it when they want to really feel or sound like the core sootin supporters. The club is an Institution, and known all over the world |
saxywale: no be your fault.na condition wey make crayfish bend.Hahahaha.. I hereby induct you to the fans club of Shooting Stars Sports Club (3SC), Ibadan. Your customised jersey will be ready in 24 hours ![]() |
Handsome Nigerian artiste has just revealed that he makes money, as one of the top artistes the country, Nigeria can proud of, but his delectable wife spends it. Alade recently said, “we have a great chemistry. We work together. I make all the money and she spends it. I am not complaining, she is not complaining either.” According to Alade who resides in Abuja with his wife said, he doesn’t care how much money he makes and how much monet his wife spends, he doesn’t worship money. “Sometimes, I don’t even know how much I make. I don’t really care about money. It is people who worship money that care about it,” he said.

kabiyesiii: What of Baba Ẹlẹran? How can someone talk of the Shooting Stars FC without not mentioning his name? Haha! Haba!I remember Bba Eleran well. I can authoritatively tell that aside the coaching crew, the medics, the security men and police, the press and journalists, the ball boys; it was ONLY Baba Eleran that was allowed to watch the match from the pitch side. An ardent supporter of Shooting he was. He was the number fan in his time. Right now, we have Mama Shooting. He's being accorded the same respect and rights given to Baba Eleran in his time. Mama Shooting can die because of 3SC, |
CFCfan: Oops, I got from Wikipedia. Thanks though, for your updateNo problems CFCfan, a good initiative still. Kudos.! Am an ardent 3SC fan as well. We can work hand in hand. |
adisa_segun: Up sutin, I was in the stadium when they beat Gombe United 2-0 on saturday. Are you sure you were there? The match was played 4pm Sunday (yesterday), not even up to 24 hours...lol |

ijebabe: Nevermind the fact that most movie titles hardly reflect the content of the film, not to talk of horrible posters showing angry faces of women when the title is about love (I won't even go there), I came across some movie titles that sounded very funny to me.Wow! Tube and tyre, and Iron pant.....lmao |
bodejohn: Watching the league live was one of the few opportunity I had to relax will studying at the polytechnic Ibadan. I am also committed to this, after watching this game live in the stadium, I made a silent promise to watch at the minimum 10 home games of shooting stars. We do not need to see the likes of Sunday Mba before we appreciate the stars in our league.Good one Bode. God will give you the grace to watch more than 10 matches. We ll make sure we get inswings from various centres on match days. It's gonna be fun. We can make the league better. |
Guys, lest I forget to mention that Kano Pillars defeated Wikki tourist away from home as well. Nigeria league... #naweown! |
Lanspower: ...And next time 3SC are away to Gombe it will be Gombe 2 - 3Sc 0(1)....or at worst it is 0-0, 1-1, or 2-2. As much as I laud the OP's effort to garner recognition for our own league, I still beleive it is a complete waste of time to watch this league when there are other leagues playing to the rule of football. Do me a favour by presenting the full results of Our league for say 4 weeks and show me where a home team lost, then present result of EPL, La Liga or Serie A where no home team lost in the past 4 weeks.Lanspower, please take your time to study the league. Just today being the week 1, we recorded an away win in Owerri between Heartland vs Nembe city which Nembe won. Pls lets support the league.i tell you, the foreign league weren't like this in the past, it's because of its wide followers hip, why can't we support our own. We shall be doing live match cast here every match day, and also expose any team that wants to behave fraudulent. Thank you |
autchman144: Other results? Please look up! I posted the results for Week 1. We shall be doing this on every match day, like the match preview and live text commentaries. I am committed to this |
