APC Presidential Primary: Allow delegates to decide, I’ve anointed no one – Buhari
"Allow the delegates to decide. The party must participate, nobody will appoint anybody." Mr Buhari says.

President Muhammadu Buhari Monday told governors of APC-controlled northern states that he had no preferred presidential aspirant in the ruling party and the party should ‘allow the delegates to decide’ its presidential candidate.

Mr Buhari’s position was contained in a statement by his spokesperson, Garba Shehu.

Mr Shehu’s statement was released minutes after the APC national chairman told other members of the party’s leadership that Mr Buhari had chosen Senate President Ahmad Lawan as his preferred presidential candidate.

“Allow the delegates to decide. The party must participate, nobody will appoint anybody,” Mr Shehu quoted the president as saying.

The APC was scheduled to commence its presidential primary in Abuja Monday and conclude on Wednesday. The event was yet to start at the time of this report.

A total of 23 presidential aspirants are seeking the party’s ticket.

Apart from Mr Lawan, other presidential aspirants include Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, ex-Lagos governor Bola Tinubu, transportation minister Rotimi Amaechi and Ekiti governor Kayode Fayemi.

Mr Shehu’s statement thus indicates that all the 23 aspirants will test their mettle at the primary.

I HAVE ANOINTED NO ONE, THERE SHALL BE NO IMPOSITION, SAYS PRESIDENT BUHARI

President Muhammadu Buhari, Monday afternoon cleared all doubts about where he stands on the choice of a presidential candidate for the governing All Progressives Congress, APC, declaring before the party’s 14 governors of northern states that he has “no preferred candidate,” and has “anointed no one,” and is determined to ensure that “there shall be no imposition of any candidate on the party.”

Speaking at a meeting with the governors at the State House, Abuja, President Buhari said the party is important and its members must be respected and made to feel they are important.

The president said he had a clear mind about what he was doing and asked the APC governors to feel the same way: “You were elected as I was. Have a clear mind as I have. God gave us the chance; we have no reason to complain. We must be ready to take pain as we take the joy. Allow the delegates to decide. The party must participate, nobody will appoint anybody.”

Earlier in their addresses, the Chairman of the Northern Governors Forum, Governor Simon Bako Lalong and Governor Abubakar Atiku Bagudu of the Progressive Governors Forum, said they had come to affirm the position of the Northern Governors that the party’s candidate in the presidential election shall come from the southern part of the country.

They apologised to the president for the leakage of their signed memorandum which was not in support of any particular candidate and gave assurances to the president on their readiness to accept his leadership on the matter.

The real party man and one that can win next presidential election for APC has taken his nationwide consultations to Cross Rivers State ahead of the parth primary next week Monday.

Only Asiwaju Bola Tinubu ticks all the boxes in President Muhammadu Buhari's address to APC Governors yesterday.

The 'City Boy' has a plan to transform Nigeria

He was not popular in three regions. Tinubu gave him popularity. He will payback by selecting Tinubu as consensus. If he fails to then he has committed an act of betrayal.

However, since Atiku is in play, APC must not pick someone like Atiku, so they can have plenty leverage to attack and bombard Atiku with negative tv commercials and ads. Tinubu is no different than Atiku, except that Tinubu is stronger in leadership and execution whereas Atiku is weak and lax. So generally they cannot throw shit at Atiku without it rubbing off on Tinubu.
The 2019 election showed that Nigerians are not interested in any Mr integrity, they just want who can do the job. Insecurity and hunger are the issues. Nigerians voted Atiku massively but for rigging in the north he would've been president.

People are now saying bring back the corrupt Jonathan provided we can feed well. Buhari's regime is even more corrupt than Jonathan's.

Forget it, no governor will try it and go against his advance. They know they are just playing to the gallery by suggesting one of them. They wanted to try same during the party chairmanship election but finally succumbed. After they reconvened, everything will fall in line. Buhari has the right to suggest who will succeed him and there is no law that bar him from doing that so far the convention will still be held and voting will take place. Also bear in mind that the electoral Act permits consensus candidate, so far all contestants agreed to it. If paradventure he chose anyone and any of them disagree, both will still go on election contest.
Virtually all outgone governors had chosen their successors, OBJ chose his and Barack Obama chose his and even campaigned vigorously for her. So, it is not out of place for him to have input as the president and the leader of the party, which everyone need to respect.
Nobody is arguing that the president doesn't have right to choose someone but in doing that,he must go about it in such a way that it doesn't destroy the party.

Musa showed his hands and picked his side. No President will pick him unless they are on the same side. In the game of loyalty, you have to be with me 100%, even 90% is not enough.

I don't see why these things should surprise people. This is elections and there must be interests, personal or collective. You don't expect to railroad with everybody nodding like agama, you must lobby, fight, coerce to see that you get ahead. The Governors are in their rights to push it but Salihu Lukman who El-Rufai nominated will keep shut when Nasir picked Sani but want to delineate rights to Buhari.

Personally, I don't think he should pick a Governor, they are ruthless in their own dealings so they have no morality to approach the President. This is normal with Buhari, send a kite, allow everyone start scrambling, then travel, return, call a meeting, make a pick, then appeal to them. Buhari has long picked his Choice and is only trying to scatter everywhere before coming in as if he is trying to calm the situation. Buni/Bello, Musa/Adamu, Giadom/Oshiomhole....the tactics has remained same.

The competency of Ministers are mostly dependent on their Principal. We saw performing Governors go to Buhari's cabinet, speaking grammar and gesticulating.

Which State are you from?
I want to check something! I want to know how your Governor picked the Party's Candidate. Let them advise the President and that's where it ends.

What is the intra-party squabbles?

Relax.
The summary of this conversation is that buhari's choice candidate must not necessarily be his successor. This is what I've agreed with in your submission.

I also agree that Buhari is a confusionist. You just reminded me of some scenarios that played out before.

Which APC or PDP Chair has finished his tenure asides Oyegun. These same Governors hold everyone by the balls but they can't have it their way all the time. Even the calm Oyegun was hounded, Adamu's problem might be his person but again who was your Choice of Chairman?

Let them support their President, Yar'Adua wasn't the most sophisticated but he was supported. Let them support their President and don't try to blackmail him. There is nobody Buhari will "anoint" today that won't win the Primary with the support of all of them and they know it.

NIGERIANS ARE THE ULTIMATE DECIDERS.

Did the Governors seek his services before picking theirs?

Even the very intelligent ones needed the "unintelligent" Buhari for remote control when they ran into trouble. They also can guide and make him see their direction, afterall he helps them when it's needed.
Sani Musa was my best bet for the job. The crack in this Abdulahi Adamu led NWC is just too early. The signs are not good.

The governors can not help the president in this matter because they all have their own personal interest. Didn't you read that they're already picking themselves? One from South and one from North? Lol..... I doubt if the governors can reach a consensus in this regard. 5 are contesting, others are split amongst Tinubu, Osinbajo, Amaechi.

Even in picking ministers, the president has failed woefully. Most of his ministers are incompetent charlatans.

You can't compare the era of yaradua to now. Who was the opponent? Was there a pan Nigeria opposition party? Was the electoral process this difficult to subvert? Can you rig brazenly like it was then? These are issues that are completely different this time around.

Whatever buhari does, he must be careful not to kill an already fragile Apc. His woeful performance has put the party at a disadvantage already, adding any intra party squabbles to this is suicidal.

Very good piece but Mr Salihu Lukman, when your Governor, yes, the one that nominated you for the APC NWC position nominated his choice as his successor, did you issue a statement?

This is also hypocritical. Does loyal party members not reduce themselves as been ordinary observers when Governors handpick their stooges?

The President will not foreclose anyone from contesting but to say he doesn't have the rights is deception at its finest.
It's not just enough to pick a successor. Can your choice of successor win the presidential election? I don't have any issue with Buhari picking anybody but he should not cow anybody to step down.

Buhari is not politically intelligent enough to pick a candidate that can win this election for the APC. His sense of judgement is not something you can bank on.

Look at his choice of chairman, Abdulahi Adamu is already causing cracks in the NWC just 2months in office. I won't be surprised if he picks Ogbonaya Onu who can't win his village.

A consensus at this delicate period will bury apc officially n that’s why buhari is extra careful

Even without consensus in oyo apc primary d losers have decamped cos they sense foul play n it’s obvious only teslim can’t hold makinde

If people can decamp cos of foul play what do u think will happen in consensus?

Wike is just in pdp cos he n Amaechi can’t b in same party cos of d legendary enmity or else with what they did to him he will have decamped
Absolutely you're correct. It's such a dicey situation that requires wisdom to navigate otherwise you kill the party. My advice to him is to probe down the numbers to 4or5 and allow them go through a free and fair primary. We know the serious ones already. Majority of them bought forms and went to sit at home.

Amaechi
Osinbajo
Tinubu
Fayemi
Lawan

These are the ones that look serious to me, others are just jesters.

As for Oyo State I think Makinde has been reelected already with teslim and adelabu splitting the APC it's over for the Apc in Oyo.

Buhari was only popular in NW and NE. He struggled in NC and was no where in the entire South until the formation of the APC.

Even as the flag bearer of the APC he was no where in the South. He was only helped by Tinubu and his boys in the south west.

Buhari and Tinubu equal stake in today's APC huh
The Governors will listen to Buhari twice before giving Tinubu attention.
Tinubu is far ahead of Buhari in the Apc if not for the office he occupies. He can't wield the kind of influence Tinubu has in the party if he's not in the office of the president. Buhari would have been defeated by Atiku in the primary if not for the likes of Tinubu and Amaechi. He didn't even know how he became the flag bearer of the party in 2015.

Tinubu has said there will be no consensus, but outright Primary. Anything short of that we not pass. If not, APC will have no candidate. Buhari does not own the party. Buhari and Tinubu have equal stake at the party, so Buhari cannot unilaterally pick another failure like himself to fly the party ticket.

We are ready to fight dirty, and we mean it, so be prepared.
The way and manner Buhari goes about his choice candidate may make or mar the Apc. He must be very careful not to destroy the fragile Apc. The cracks have started emanating already from the NWC.

The president should know that Nigerians have scored him F9 in governance and they have a formidable opponent in Atiku. Buhari has technically killed the APC with his woeful performance in office. He should thread carefully.
