PoliticsBiafra: Instead Of Locking Kanu Up,do Business With Him,catholic Bishop Tells Fg by SleekyP(op): 10:03am On Dec 13, 2015
The Catholic Bishop of Sokoto Diocese, Most Rev. Matthew Kukah, has said nothing was wrong with the agitation for Biafra by members of the Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra.

Kukah, who said this on Friday night at the convocation lecture of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun State, added that the pro-Biafra agitators were exercising the freedom of expression.

The clergyman advised the Federal Government to partner with the Director of Radio Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu, saying the government should seek to do business with him because of his charisma.

The bishop further said no Nigerian politician could mobilise a huge number of supporters like Kanu without paying them, saying the government did not need to hound this kind of person but to partner with him.

Kukah said: “This country cannot continue this way. MASSOB has right to demand Biafra since we have freedom of expression. The problem of Nigeria should not be with Kanu but should be with who let the door open.

“The President of Nigeria or any governor, unless he pays, cannot bring the number of people that Kanu brought out. The anxiety of Nigeria should be that a young man who can bring out such great number of people is worth doing business with.”

The cleric also bemoaned the state of Nigerian universities. He said the management as well as lecturers should be blamed if some students failed to graduate.

Kukah stated that students had a say in the promotion of their lecturers in some universities but that was not the case in the nation’s varsities.

“Elsewhere, students have a say in the promotion of their teachers but here in Nigeria, too many evils are being committed. We need a generation of lawyers and judges who can bend the arc of justice in favour of the poor,” he added.

In his opening remarks, the Vice-Chancellor of the OAU, Prof. Bamitale Omole, said the university remained the best in the country, saying many feats had been achieved since he assumed office.

PoliticsJob Creation Remains Top Priority – PMB by SleekyP(op): 9:03am On Dec 13, 2015
President Muhammadu Buhari yesterday reiterated his administration’s commitment to job creation, saying it is one of the highest priorities of “our change agenda.”

The President stated this at 2nd convocation ceremony of the Kaduna State University, Kaduna State, where he was conferred with an honorary doctor of letters.

The award is the first ever conferred on the president.

Speaking on the theme of the convocation, “Entrepreneurship for Development,” President Buhari pledged that his administration will give the fullest possible support to all efforts to create more jobs through the reorientation of Nigerian youths towards an entrepreneurial mindset, pointing out that this is vital for the attainment of the Federal Government’s other objectives of improved security and poverty reduction.

“This administration will ensure that youths in the country are gainfully employed and youth restiveness curtailed.

“One of the focal points of this administration is job creation. Job creation will help in the achievement of other objectives of the government such as poverty reduction and security which are some of the challenges this administration is confronted with. Insecurity cannot be divorced from unemployment and poverty because an idle mind, they say, is the devil’s workshop,” he said.

Buhari further stated that with declining internally generated revenue and over dependence on the equally declining oil revenues, there was the need to seek other ways of diversifying the economy so as to boost revenue.

“One of the ways we can achieve this is through the reorientation of our youths towards an entrepreneurial mindset. We must therefore promote and enhance the teaching and learning of entrepreneurial skills in all schools and tertiary institutions, thereby exposing our youth to the basics and rudiments of starting and sustaining their own businesses,” he emphasised.

The President further stated that to encourage and assist Nigerian youth to move from being job seekers to job creators, his administration will sustain and improve ongoing programmes by the Central Bank of Nigeria, the Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency of Nigeria, the Bank of Industry, the Bank of Agriculture and other Federal agencies to grant them start-up loans at concessionary rates.

He urged the Nigerian private sector to also do more to support government’s efforts to boost youth entrepreneurship and the development of micro, small and medium scale enterprises in the country, pointing out that it was in recognition of the importance of entrepreneurial skills that the federal government through the National Universities Commission made it mandatory for all universities to teach entrepreneurship skills, so that graduates can become job creators instead of job seekers after schooling.

He also thanked the university for conferring the honourary doctorate degree of letters on him.

Vice Chancellor of the university, Prof Williams Barnabas, said the award to the president was not because of his position as the number one citizen of Nigeria, but in recognition of his numerous contributions to the development of the country as an officer of the Nigerian Army, Head of State and currently, President of the country.

Africa’s richest Man, Alhaji Aliko Dangote was also honoured with a doctor of science by the university.

Also in Kaduna yesterday, the president attributed his success in the 2015 general to the relentless effort of musicians, whom he said contributed more to the APC’s success than the politicians.

The president who declared the Kaduna Music Festival (KADAMFEST) formally expressed his gratitude and that of the APC to artistes in the country for their tremendous contributions to the party’s victory.

He also expressed gratitude to the state governor, Mallam Nasir el-Rufai for using the creative industry as an avenue for job creation.

The president commended the Kaduna state government for organising KADAMFEST as a platform to recognise talents and to encourage the emergence of new ones and also acknowledged the festival sponsors.

“The story of 2015 cannot be honestly told without acknowledging the contributions of creative people to the APC’s success,” Buhari said, pointing out that though many politicians made efforts to mobilise people to make the success of 2015 possible, Nigerian artistes made a massive contribution to public enlightenment.

“Many actors, musicians and writers – from different strands and in various styles – drew Nigerians to the banner of change. In speaking the language of the people, enlightening and mobilising them with words and images they could understand, I doubt if any politician surpassed the likes of Dauda Rarara and other musicians,” he emphasised.

The president also said that, “the artistes gave hope to our people and persuaded them to believe that things could really change. Musicians and actors across the length and breadth of Nigeria mobilized the citizenry to stand up for peaceful, orderly and transparent elections. You preached both peace and hope leading to democratic change. You did so patriotically at great personal risk and without any expectations, inducement or financial reward.”

Buhari also pointed out that the application of creative talent to the cause of political change in a dire moment for our country deserves eternal gratitude.

“As President, I say a formal thank you today on behalf of myself, the APC and our victorious candidates. In appreciating talent, we have a duty to ensure that we do not turn our backs, or reduce the creative sector to something that we engage only during elections.”

He called on the youth of Kaduna state to embrace the opportunities the el-Rufai administration was providing, and noted that KADAMFEST is a veritable way of creating and expanding job opportunities and that it reflects the Kaduna state government’s approach to giving momentum to the growth of the creative industry in the state.

“It is noteworthy that the Kaduna state government has attracted sponsorship for this festival, and does not have to put in its own resources, which it would have been justified to. We hope that many more companies will in future support initiatives that boost our youths.”

The president acknowledged that Kaduna state has always been faithful to his political aspirations and expressed gratitude for the high number of votes the people of Kaduna state gave the APC.

PoliticsBuhari, Order Immediate Arrest Of Okonjo-Iweala & Emefiele - By Ilesanmi Omabomi by SleekyP(op): 8:48am On Dec 13, 2015
It has long been established that a subordinate has no legal obligation to obey illegal orders from his/her superior. This point is important as we examine the recent nauseating revelations about the huge sums of money that the former finance minister, Mrs. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala and Central Bank governor, Godwin Emefiele, made available to the now arrested former National Security Adviser, Sambo Dasuki.

Few days ago, Okonjo-Iweala admitted giving Sambo Dasuki the sum of $322m on the orders of former President Goodluck Jonathan. Before that the same Okonjo-Iweala admitted spending $2bn
from the Excess Crude Oil account on the orders of the former President. The Central Bank of Nigeria under Godwin Emefiele has admitted giving Sambo Dasuki billions of Naira and dollars on the orders of the former president. A good part of these monies were given to Sambo Dasuki in cash in clear contravention of existing anti-money laundering laws by the country’s chief banker. Let us put the money laundering issue to the side for now.

The problem with the orders from the former President to the then finance minister and current CBN governor is that they were illegal. Neither the President nor any other government official in Nigeria has the legal authority to order the spending of funds that have not been appropriated by the National Assembly! Both subordinates knew or ought to know that the orders they were obeying were illegal and should have refused to comply. Resignation was an option. Between these two subordinates they cost the nation in excess of $5B by obeying the referenced illegal orders. That is just what we know so far and this kind of behavior is going on at every level of government everyday.

The arrest and prosecution of Okonjo-Iweala and Godwin Emediefe will send out the message that “the president ordered the payment” is not a defense known to the laws of Nigeria. Their prosecution is imperative in light of the fact that a lot of the money being stolen in the country is not in the custody of the people stealing them. They rely on a group of people that I call facilitators in an upcoming article to get access to public funds in the custody of the facilittors.

In almost every case of monies made available to Sambo Dasuki, all those making the money available were following illegal orders and they knew it. The time has come for Buhari to beam the searchlight on this group of people. The commercial bankers who allow government officials to come into their banks and withdraw millions and billions in cash in apparent violation of anti-money laundering laws are facilitators of corruption because they know the funds are dirty hence the need to terminate the paper trail through cash withdrawal. The bankers ought to be in jail too partly because they make tracing these funds more complicated.

To understand the importance of subordinates not obeying illegal orders, imagine that Okonjo-Iweala, NNPC and Godwin Emefiele refused to obey the former President’s illegal orders and resigned under pressure and spilled the beans. With Nigerians fully aware of the attempted fraud it would have been difficult for their replacements to obey the same illegal orders. Buhari’s anti-corruption war must involve establishing a culture that encourages civil servants, and bank employees to disobey illegal orders. This will prevent our money from leaving the treasury rather than chasing after the money after it has been stolen.

Before closing I will like to remind people that a majority of the civilians and military officers who were tried, executed or jailed by the post-World War 2 Nuremberg Trials courts in Germany were obeying orders from Adolf Hitler. The problem was that Adolf Hitler had no legal basis for issuing the orders and those who ended up being executed for obeying the orders had no obligation to obey the orders.

Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala and Godwin Emefiele should be familiar with the Nuremberg Trials. The lesson is that a superior cannot order a subordinate to do anything that the superior has no authority to do himself/herself. Nigerians must rid themselves of the idea that a President has the power to order anyone to do anything in the absence of enabling legislation. Na oga say make I do am is not a defense.

PoliticsAppeal Court Sacks Anambra Pdp Reps Member, Affirms Dozie Nwankwo by SleekyP(op): 4:43pm On Dec 07, 2015
The Court of Appeal sitting in Enugu, Monday, upheld the election of Ferdinand Dozie Nwankwo of the All Progressive Grand Alliance, APGA, as the rightful winner of the Anaocha/Dunukofia/Njikoka Federal Constituency seat of Anambra State.

In a unanimous decision, the appellate court ruled that Dr Okey Eze of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, who currently occupies the seat was wrongly declared winner of the election and therefore should vacate the seat forthwith for Nwankwo.

In the judgment delivered by Justice Pemu, the court agreed with the decision of the tribunal that sat in Awka that Nwankwo and not Eze ought to have been declared winner of the election having scored the majority of lawful votes cast in the National Assembly Election held in the constituency.

Nwankwo had challenged the return of Dr. Eze, who INEC declared winner of the election on the ground that he was not the winner of the majority of lawful votes cast in the election.

He told the tribunal that if the votes cast in the election had been properly declared based on the results declared in the polling units, he (Nwankwo) would have been declared winner of that election.

But curiously, he said that the final result which INEC announced, declared his PDP opponent, Dr. Eze, winner of the election, contending that he did not know how the commission arrived at that because the final result of the election ought to be the same as the summary of the calculation of polling units results which was not so in the said election.

Based on this, Nwankwo approached the tribunal which upheld his election prompting Dr. Eze to proceed to the Appeal Court to challenge the decision.

The Appeal Court, in its ruling Monday, however, agreed with the decision of the tribunal which ordered Eze to vacate the seat for Nwankwo.

It was jubilation galore for members of APGA from Anambra State, who besieged the Appeal Court Monday morning to listen to the verdict.

Reacting to the judgment, Nwankwo said that he felt fulfilled, describing the court verdict as “dream come true”.

“I want to thank the Almighty God for today. I feel fulfilled. It is a dream come true and I feel happy.

“The next challenge before me is service to my people which is what we have been praying for and today the Appeal Court has reaffirmed what the lower tribunal said and we are going to work,” he said.

He said that the judgement has confirmed that the judiciary remains the hope of the common man and that the era of impunity was over in the country.

Politics"Post Humous Centenary Birthday Celebration/foundation Launch" Adelabu Adegoke by SleekyP(op):
Pics from: Post Humous Centenary Birthday Celebration/Foundation Launch Alhaji.(HON.) Adegoke Adelabu (a.k.a. PENKELEMESI)

The memory of the late first Federal Minister of Social Services and Natural Resources, Alhaji Adegoke Adelabu (aka Penkelemesi) came to the fore on 3rd Thursday September 2015 in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital. It was at the politician’s post-humous centenary birthday celebration and foundation launch.

GOVERNOR Abiola Ajimobi of Oyo State was the chief host at the post-humous centenary birthday and launch of Adegoke Adelabu Foundation as well as a book written in 1952 by Adelabu: Africa in Ebullition, held at the Ibadan Civic Centre, Idi-Ape, said “Alhaji Adegoke Adelabu was a man of great ideas who lived before his time. His book, African in Ebullition, published in 1952 was more of a manifesto of social welfare programmes for improved living condition of the people. He utilized his position as the leader of opposition to Action Group under the sage, Chief Obafemi Awolowo, to offer such robust political direction that kept the government in power to be constantly on its toes to provide better services for the people.

“Chief Anthony Enahoro as the House Leader once acknowledged it in the Western Region House of Assembly Hansard in 1953 when he stated that ‘this is not the time for partisanship, but I wish to say, Mr. Speaker, that nobody realized better than we on the government bench that Alhaji Adelabu provided that useful check without which democratic government could not survive.’ He was more than a match!”

Ajimobi then named the major ancient street that divides Ibadan into two historical parts, which starts Felele Roundabout to Agodi-Gate-Yidi in Ibadan as Adelabu Adegoke Way, “on behalf of the people and government of Oyo State, and in everlasting memory of this political giant, an icon and a grassroots mobiliser par excellence.”

The governor, who said that Adelabu possessed what it required to dislodge the condominium – sound education, discerning power, political articulation, courage of conviction, iron will and uncompromising stance in the face of threat and intimidation – personally launched the book and the foundation with N5 million and promised another N5 million by the state, assuring civil servants in the state that all the salaries owed them by the government would be settled this month.

Dignitaries that graced the occasion included former governors of Oyo State, Otunba Adebayo Alao-Akala and Dr. Omololu Olunloyo; Secretary to Osun State Government, Alhaji Moshood Adeoti, who represented Governor Rauf Aregbesola; Chairman, National Population Commission (NPC) in the state, Alhaji Lateef Gbadamosi, who represented former President Olusegun Obasanjo; and Speaker of Oyo State House of Assembly, Mr. Michael Adeyemo, among others.
