EducationI’ll Make UI World Class University, Says Pro-chancellor by SleekyP(op): 6:41pm On Jun 13, 2015
SleekyP:
The new Pro-chancellor of the University of Ibadan (UI), Dr Umar Mustapha, says his mission is to place the institution among the top 100 universities in the world.

This was contained in a statement issued by Mr Olatunji Oladejo, Director of Public Communication, UI, made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Saturday.

The statement quoted Mustapha as saying that he would make the University of Ibadan to be first choice for Nigerians interested in earning quality degrees, especially at post-graduate level.

It said that Mustapha, who is also the chairman of the university governing council, promised to seek more harmonious working relationship between the academic and non-academic staff of the institution.

The statement quoted him as saying that such relationship would help in improving the teaching and learning environment for the students.

Mustapha, according to the statement, said that serious attention would be focused on producing more renowned and accomplished people like Emeritus Prof. Wole Soyinka, late Emeritus Prof. Chinua Achebe, Prof. Iya Abubakar and others.

It quoted the pro-chancellor as saying that this would bring international recognition to the institution and the country as a whole.

The pro-chancellor said in the statement that efforts would be made to transform, within the next five years, the university’s newly established School of Business to be one of the best in Africa.

Mustapha urged the university management to vigorously pursue implementation of polices that would improve welfare of the students in terms of decent accommodation, feeding arrangements, transportation and medicare.

The statement said he urged both lecturers and students to stay off plagiarism which carries serious penalty and could bring the reputation of the university to public disrepute.

NAN reports that Mustapha was appointed as Pro-Chancellor and Chairman, Governing Council of the University on April 4.

Bus driver, mechanic in police custody for brutalising kids with hot iron, plank

All 16-year-old Kafayat Bello, a year two senior student of a school in Bariga in Lagos, wanted was to be a normal girl who could sneak out to play with friends once in a while. But what she did not expect was the kind of brutal punishment she would later get from her father, a commercial bus driver.

On Tuesday, May 2, 2015, Kafayat’s father, Ibrahim, pounced on her and whipped her till she could not walk. Not done, he plugged their pressing iron and burnt her multiple times, inflicting severe injuries all over her body.

Kafayat, whose case has been taken over by the Office of the Public Defender under the Lagos State Ministry of Justice, explained that on the day of the incident, she was given the duty of attending to a client who needed manicure and pedicure in her mother’s beauty parlour.

“When I finished attending to the customer, I left the shop to play with some of my friends. When I got back, my mother asked where I was and told me she would report me to my father. When I got home and my mother told my father what I did, he started to beat me very hard and he then went off to plug a pressing iron, which he used to burn me all over my body,” the girl said.

Saturday PUNCH learnt that when the brutal action of the father became too scary for Kafayat’s mother who stood by as her husband punished their daughter, she rushed out to call neighbours for help, who later came in to restrain him against further damage to the girl’s body.

OPD officials who handled the case said Ibrahim locked up her daughter after the incident and warned her not to go out until the injuries healed so that no one would know what happened.

“But when her classmates came looking for her from school they told her she had missed some tests. In order not to miss more tests, she rushed to school on Thursday, two days after she sustained the injuries. When she got to school, that was when we discovered the extensive injuries,” a school official who reported the case said.

As soon as the case was reported, Ibrahim was arrested and OPD took over the case.

Our correspondent counted at least 15 visible spots on the body of the girl where she sustained severe injuries from her face down to her thighs.

My father beats me all the time – 5-year-old boy beaten to coma with plank

Cases of brutality by parents against their children may not be a new issue but the rising incidents of such crimes have become a source of concern to authorities.

Apart from the case of Kafayat, more cases which have drawn the ire of authorities include that of five-year-old Olamilekan Mustapha, whose father, Adigun him till he lost consciousness.

His 28-year-old father reportedly resuscitated the boy but damage had been done to his body.

The series of brutal beating Olamilekan’s father has meted out to him seems to have turned his young body to a map of some sort as healed and fresh marks of whiplashes crisscross all over his body and face.

All the boy could say was “my father beat me all the time” when asked about the marks all over his body.

Like Kafayat, observant teachers in Olamilekan’s school promptly reported his case to the authorities when they noticed the extensive marks all over the boy’s face and body when he went to school the following morning.

Adigun, who is an auto mechanic, was later invited by the Office of Public Defender, where he was later handed over to the police for prosecution.

OPD said a protection order was being processed for the custody of Olamilekan in a government children’s home, where the boy would be kept pending the determination of his father’s case in the court.

Saturday PUNCH learnt that Olamilekan’s mother and Adigun had separated some years ago. But that his step-mother, who is nursing a two-month-old baby also beat the boy ruthlessly regularly as well.

Director of the OPD, Mrs. Omotola Rotimi, told our correspondent that the children were victims of transferred aggression but that the severity of the cases has warranted that the fathers be charged to court.

She said, “When we were notified about the case of the young boy, it was so severe and fresh that we had to call the police. He is receiving treatment at a hospital at the moment and he would be handed over to government care for rehabilitation after that.

“In the case of the boy’s father we did not want the police to waste time on it. That was why we insisted he be charged to court immediately.”

It was learnt that Adigun has been arraigned and his case has been adjourned till July 20 for mention.

In the hot iron assault case, Omotola said her office would continue to monitor the case to ensure that Ibrahim was diligently prosecuted.

Rotimi said, “The case of the girl that was burnt with iron was so severe that she could have lost her life in the process. We also have the father in custody and would ensure that he is prosecuted diligently for the severe assault on the girl.

“While he kept the girl at home, he invited an auxiliary nurse to treat her injuries but the nurse did a very shoddy job. The injuries could have deteriorated and caused further damage to the girl’s body if not because we were notified on time. We had to ensure the girl receive adequate treatment first.”

SleekyP:
The Deputy Head of Mission, Russian Embassy, Valeriy Shaposhmikov has said two major Russian oil companies, Gazprom and Lukoil would be coming to invest in Nigeria’s oil and gas sector.

The envoy stated that the proposed nuclear power plant in the country would generate 10,000 jobs and also create new industries.

Speaking to journalists during the Russian Federation Day celebration on Thursday in Abuja, the diplomat observed that there are various opportunities for Russian firms in Nigeria, noting that Gazprom could be involved in developing oil and gas pipelines infrastructure and protection system.

He said,  “As you know, we have an agreement signed on the construction of nuclear power plants in Nigeria. The implementation of this project only, in addition to a substantial increase in power generation capacity, is able to bring a minimum of 10,000 jobs and create new industries in the country.

“An important area could be oil and gas sector – a major Russian oil and gas company Gazprom could be involved in developing pipelines infrastructure and protection system, an oil company Lukoil is coming to work here. There is interest in the development of the solid mineral resources.”

Shaposhmikov said his country looks forward to getting support from the Federal Government to solve the critical issues in Alascon Aluminium Company, Akwa-Ibom State, which is owned by Rusal, a Russian aluminum company.

He stated that Alscon needs non-stop supply of gas as constant interruptions in gas delivery to the company had led to great losses, putting into question the existence of the commercial project.

“We do also worry about the safety of investment. The property rights of Rusal over Alscon shares should be confirmed. With all these problems removed, Alscon will be able to restart producing aluminum,” the envoy said.

While welcoming guests to the anniversary celebration, the Russian Ambassador, Mr. Nikolay Udovichenko, said he supported the recent changes in Nigeria explaining that peaceful and democratic transition  of  power was an important step towards development.

He expressed willingness to work with Nigeria in the security, economic and educational sectors even as he applauded President Muhammadu Buhari on his commitment to fight terrorism, adding that the Russian Federation is ready to give the necessary support.

“We do not only strongly wish the new Nigerian government success in this field, but we are also ready to give all necessary support in different spheres, including security, economy and even education,” Udovichenko promised.

SleekyP:
There are indications that President Muhammadu Buhari will announce his ministerial list on Monday, June 15, 2015.

It is also revealed that the immediate past Governor of Lagos State, Babatunde Fashola, will be announced Secretary to the Federal Government same day.

Sources said,

“The president is just waiting to receive the reports from the transition committee today (Friday) and thereafter review over the weekend.

“Barring any major contrary information in the transition committee’s report, Buhari should make this list public as early as Monday; that will shock everyone”.

All Progressives Congress (APC), Ahmed BolaTinubu is expected to make inputs into the list but his choices might see him clash with Buhari, sources said. The APC chieftain said recently that he was aware that Buhari wants a good mix of politicians and private sector players as members of his cabinet.

It would be recalled that President Buhari turned down the governors’ list, when he retorted that “I don’t appoint commissioners for the governors and so they cannot appoint my ministers.”

It is now very evident from President  Buhari’s inaugural speech and his commentary on Senator Bukola Saraki’s recent emergence as Senate President, that all is not well between him and his ‘godfather’.  President Buhari’s recent invitation to Fashola to accompany him to the G7 Summit in Germany continues to buttress watchers’ postulation that  Fashola is indeed an anointed one.
