Travel / Hell Is Coming': Week-long Heatwave Begins Across Europe(pics) by sloye5(m): 6:44am On Jun 25, 2019
Temperatures could hit 40C from Spain to Switzerland, with authorities urging children and older people to stay indoors

Authorities have urged children and older people to stay indoors and issued severe warnings against dehydration and heatstroke as an unprecedented week-long heatwave begins its advance across continental Europe.

Meteorologists said temperatures would reach or even exceed 40C from Spain to Switzerland as hot air was sucked up from the Sahara by the combination of a storm stalling over the Atlantic and high pressure over central Europe.

High humidity meant it would feel like 47C, experts warned. “El infierno [hell] is coming,” tweeted the TV meteorologist Silvia Laplana in Spain, where the AEMET weather service forecast temperatures of 42C by Thursday in the Ebro, Tagus, Guadiana and Guadalquivir valleys and warned of an “extreme risk” of forest fires.

In France, officials in Paris set up “cool rooms” in municipal buildings, opened pools for late-night swimming and installed extra drinking fountains as temperatures in the capital reached 34C on Monday and were forecast to climb further later in the week.

“I’m worried about people who are downplaying this, who are continuing to exercise as usual or stay out in the sun,” the health minister, Agnès Buzyn, said. “This affects all of us, nobody is a superman when it comes to dealing with the extreme heat we’re going to see on Thursday and Friday,” she told a press conference.

Foreign Affairs / Thousands Celebrate In Istanbul After Opposition Wins(pics) by sloye5(m): 10:05am On Jun 24, 2019
THOUSANDS poured onto the streets of Istanbul last night after the opposition candidate for mayor secured a landmark win over power-mad Turkish President Erdogan's party.

Ekrem Imamoglu, 49, said thank you to his supporters after his victory on Sunday - the second time the election took place amid weeks of political tension.

Imamoglu narrowly won an earlier mayoral election on March 31 - but Erdogan's Justice and Development Party, AKP, challenged the vote over alleged irregularities.

He spent 18 days in office before Turkey's electoral board annulled the results after weeks of partial recounts.

Last night, unofficial results showed he won a clear majority of the vote - beating former Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yildirim 54 per cent to 45 per cent.

Imamoglu increased his lead from the March mayoral election by hundreds of thousands of votes - suggesting a voter backlash against Erdogan's efforts to further seize power.
ERDOGAN'S GRIP

But analysts say the president - who is grappling with an economic downturn and several international crises - could limit the mayor's power or undermine Imamoglu's authority in other ways.

It was feared after the initial result was voided that AKP - which has governed Turkey since 2002 - would never accept any electoral loss.

Imamoglu told jubilant crowds last night: "You have protected the reputation of democracy in Turkey with the whole world watching."

Supporters chanted "Mayor again! Mayor again!" while others hung out of cars, blaring horns and waving red-and-white Turkish flags.

Travel / 3,771 Irregular Migrants Held Over Past Week Across Turkey(pics) by sloye5(m): 4:58pm On Jun 23, 2019
A total of 3,771 irregular migrants were held across Turkey over the past week, according to data compiled by Anadolu Agency from security sources.

As many as 1,643 irregular migrants were caught in multiple operations carried out by gendarmerie forces in northwestern Edirne province, which borders Greece and Bulgaria.

The migrants included Pakistani, Moroccan, Syrian, Iraqi, Afghan, Egyptian and Bangladeshi nationals.

In other northwestern provinces of Kırklareli and Tekirdağ, a total of 182 irregular migrants were held by gendarmerie forces during the same period.

In the coastal provinces of Mersin, Canakkale, Balikesir, Aydın, İzmir and Muğla, coastguard and gendarmerie forces rounded up a total of 1,168 migrants, who were attempting to cross to Europe through Greece.

Separately, border forces in Hatay province caught 172 migrants, which reportedly entered Turkey illegally, from Syria.

In eastern Van province, bordering Iran, a total of 434 migrants were held by gendarmerie and border forces.

In other eastern provinces of Siirt and Kars, security forces held 84 migrants over the past week.

Some 75 irregular migrants were also held by police in Turkey's capital Ankara.

In addition, 13 migrants were held in Nigde province as they were entering the country through illegal means.

Security forces also arrested 25 people for alleged human smuggling.

All of the migrants were either taken to hospitals to receive medical care or transferred to provincial migration offices.

Some 268,000 irregular migrants were held in Turkey in 2018, according to the Interior Ministry.

Turkey has been a key transit point for irregular migrants aiming to cross into Europe to start new lives, especially those fleeing war and persecution.

Foreign Affairs / Re: Team Usa Vs Team China, quick Guide To The Usa/china Trade War(pictures) by sloye5(m): 7:24am On Jun 23, 2019
After agreeing a truce in December, both sides began to talk.

But on Friday the US raised tariffs on $200bn of Chinese products to 25% from 10%. China retaliated but officials say the countries are still talking.

The US has also started the process for hitting an additional $300bn of Chinese goods with tariffs.

But on Friday the US raised tariffs on $200bn of Chinese products to 25% from 10%. China retaliated but officials say the countries are still talking.

The US has also started the process for hitting an additional $300bn of Chinese goods with tariffs.

Why tariffs?

Tariffs imposed on Chinese goods, in theory, make US-made products cheaper than imported ones, and encourage consumers to buy American. They are also increasingly seen as a negotiation tactic in the trade war.

What is the impact so far?

Both US and international firms have said they are being harmed.

US President Donald Trump has complained about China's trading practices since before he took office in 2016.

The US launched an investigation into Chinese trade policies in 2017. It imposed tariffs on billions of dollars worth of Chinese products last year, and Beijing retaliated in kind.

After months of hostilities, both countries agreed to halt new trade tariffs in December to allow for talks.

Optimism had grown over the prospect of a deal, but that faded, and now the US has more than doubled tariffs on $200bn (£153.7bn) worth of Chinese products.

Beijing retaliated three days later with tariff hikes on $60bn of US goods

What tariffs are in place?

Last year, the US imposed three rounds of tariffs on more than $250bn worth of Chinese goods.

The duties of up to 25% cover a wide range of industrial and consumer items - from handbags to railway equipment.

Beijing hit back with tariffs on $110bn of US goods, accusing the US of starting "the largest trade war in economic history".

China has targeted products including chemicals, coal and medical equipment with levies that range from 5% to 25%.

It has also targeted products made in US districts with strong support for the Republicans, and goods that can be purchased elsewhere, such as soybeans.

I watch and read daily about the trade war between china and usa..OK lets do a recap

USA says china China actively puts up hurdles to market access and demands technology transfer and shelters a large number of domestic industries from competitors to allow them to develop. China is pretty openly focusing on two goals, one technology transfer, and two building up certain key industry sectors by protecting firms like the 3 hyperscale internet giants in Baidu/Tencent and Alibaba.

One in five North American-based corporations on the CNBC Global CFO Council says [b]Chinese companies have stolen their intellectual property within the last year. In all, 7 of the 23 companies surveyed say that Chinese firms have stolen from them over the past decade.

Education / Turkey Trains Future Leaders Of Ethiopia(pics) by sloye5(m): 6:59am On Jun 23, 2019
Ankara will continue providing a full scholarship for Ethiopian students to enable the next generation of capable leaders, an official said on June 22.

Murat Kazancı, head of culture and social affairs with the Presidency for Turks Abroad and Related Communities (YTB), told Anadolu Agency that Ethiopian students had been benefiting from Turkey's scholarship program since 2012.

"As was in the past, those who will qualify for the 2019 scholarship, will be able to attain undergraduate, postgraduate and doctorate degrees.

"This year 1,500 bright young Ethiopian students had applied and we will take 70 to 80 students," Kazancı said.

He added that Turkey will increase the quota for Ethiopian students in the coming years.

All vying candidates have to go through an interview which is expected to take place in a week, according to Kazancı.

Mustafa Bati, 29, one of the candidates who plans to earn a doctoral degree in agricultural economics told Anadolu Agency that winning the scholarship would be a "dream come true.”

"My dream is to become a committed scholar who can transfer skills and technologies that would transform Ethiopia's archaic agriculture," Bati said.

Zakaria Abdi Weli, 23, said that the high quality of Turkish higher education institutions and the historical relations between Ethiopia and Turkey persuaded him to apply for the scholarship.

"I am confident that I will be accepted to pursue my PhD in business administration," he said.

More than 145 applicants from 167 countries had applied for the Turkish scholarship program in 2019.
