A severe summer storm in Istanbul has left at least three people injured, with heavy rain, hail and strong winds knocking down trees and a stone wall and flooding streets in the Turkish city. The NTV television channel said part of a stone wall surrounding a cemetery for the Christian Armenian community had been demolished in Thursday’s storm, hurting two people. Footage showed rescue crews and residents helping each other to remove the stones, looking for people who may have been trapped beneath the rubble. Winds also toppled a large crane that landed on oil barrels at a port, causing an explosion and a fire, the state-run Anadolu Agency reported. At least one person was injured in the fire, which was later brought under control. A small depot also caught fire after being hit by lightning. Heavy rainfall disrupted the evening rush hour traffic, stranding vehicles in flooded streets. Delays were reported at Istanbul’s main airport and some planes were diverted to other airports. https://weather.com/news/news/istanbul-turkey-storms-flooding-july-2017 cc: justwise

A 6.7-magnitude undersea quake hit the Greek holiday island of Kos and the Turkish resort of Bodrum on Friday, killing two people and injuring hundreds in areas abuzz with nightlife. The epicenter of the quake was about 10 kilometers (six miles) south of Bodrum, a magnet for holidaymakers, and 16 kilometers east of Kos, the US Geological Survey said. “(There was) this loud rumbling noise and we all ran out… my four friends fell to the ground due to the place shaking so much,” 18-year-old Briton Harriet Longley told AFP from Kos. “We all crawled out and managed to get down the stairs where the other guests were screaming.” Television footage showed gutted stone buildings and island streets filled with rubble. The quake, followed by scores of aftershocks, also toppled the minaret of an 18th-century Ottoman mosque and cracked the dock in the port of Kos, which has been shut down. https://www.yahoo.com/news/powerful-earthquake-hits-greece-turkey-slideshow-wp-171710627.html

The main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) has slammed the Education Ministry for adding the concept of jihad as part of “Islamic law” in school books. “They are trying to install an education of values based on jihad,” CHP spokesperson Bülent Tezcan said after the party’s Central Executive Board meeting on July 19. “By embedding a jihadist education of values they are trying to plague the brains of our little children with the same understanding that transforms the Middle East into a blood bath,” Tezcan said. His comments came after Education Minister İsmet Yılmaz said on July 18 that the final version of Turkey’s national school curriculum added the concept of “jihad” in many classes of religion. “Jihad is an element in our religion; it is in our religion. The duty of the Education Ministry is to teach every concept deservedly, in a correct way,” Yılmaz said. Tezcan criticized the changes to the curriculum, arguing that the concept cannot be thought as a “shared value.” “While radical terrorist organizations like ISIL [Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant] or Al-Qaeda are shedding blood under the name of jihad, which understanding of jihad are you going to present as a shared value?” Tezcan said. “Instead of an education which features reason and science, how can you not promote the culture of conciliation, or cohabiting and peace but instead hand Turkey over to such uncivilized understanding despite the disasters that jihadist understanding has brought to the world,” he added. http://www.hurriyetdailynews.com/main-opposition-chp-slams-introduction-of-jihad-into-new-education-curriculum-.aspx?pageID=238&nID=115721&NewsCatID=338

Many Istanbulites had to remove their shoes while crossing the road, creating yet another surreal image for a city that was touted as European Capital of Culture in 2010 A gigantic shopping mall in the Bayrampaşa neighborhood on the European side of Istanbul was inaccessible shortly after it started to rain in the afternoon Bridges and overpasses turned into artificial waterfalls Opposition now has more ammunition to criticize the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) for its urban management, weeks after its victory in March 30 local elections. Pro-government social media users, however, argued that heavy rain is a blessing now, considering the preceding drought that threatened Istanbul with water cuts this summer:

Heavy rainfall has caused floods in Istanbul, inundating roads, underpasses and subway lines and causing havoc in the city. Several vehicles were stranded in the floodwaters on Tuesday and television footage showed a rescue crew entering an underpass in a rubber boat to help trapped passengers. The private DHA news agency said people stranded in homes due to flooding in the district of Silivri — one of the worst-hit areas — were also helped out in boats. The Eurasia Tunnel, connecting Istanbul's Asian and European sides under the Bosporus strait, was temporarily closed to traffic. https://www.voanews.com/a/heavy-rainfall-causes-floods-havoc-istanbul-turkey/3948619.html https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uQZzPsPC8Z0

Education minister says 'the real meaning of jihad is loving your nation' Turkey's new school curriculum drops Charles Darwin's theory of evolution and adds the concept of jihad as patriotic in spirit. The move has fuelled fears President Recep Tayyip Erdogan is subverting the republic's secular foundations. The chairman of a teachers' union has described the changes as a huge step in the wrong direction for Turkey's schools and an attempt to avoid raising "generations who ask questions". ismet Yilmaz, the country's education minister, said the controversial decision to exclude the theory of evolution was "because it is above the students' level and not directly relevant." A member of the opposition Republican People's Party, Mustafa Balbay, said any suggestion the theory was beyond their understanding was an insult to high school students. "You go and give an 18-year old student the right to elect and be elected, but don't give him the right to learn about the theory of evolution...This is being close minded and ignorant." The theory of evolution is rejected by both Christian and Muslim creationists, who believe God created the world as described in the Bible and the Koran, making the universe and all living things in six days. http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/europe/turkey-school-curriculum-teach-jihad-concept-drop-evolution-science-muslim-islam-a7848176.html

The rise of 'designer nipples': Surgeon reports huge surge in patients wanting a 'nipple tuck' so they can wear see-through shirts like Kendall Jenner and Bella Hadid These days, anything can be nipped and tucked. The cosmetic surgery industry is booming, with soaring rates of women (and men) going under the knife to adjust their appearance. But now, even a simple boob job is small fry. One surgeon based in New York City says he has seen a huge surge in the number of women asking for nipple operations. In just six months, Dr Norman Rowe's weekly number of nipple patients has more than quadrupled, from about four a week to around 18. 'Nothing is above cosmetic surgery now,' Dr Rowe, a board-certified plastic surgeon with the American Board of Plastic Surgery, told Daily Mail Online. 'People are looking at every detail. It's not enough now to get a breast augmentation or rhinoplasty - women want to fine-tune every element. And these days, that's possible. 'This trend has really come about in the last six months - a year tops. I guess it might have something to do with summer coming around.' Dr Rowe, who runs Rowe Plastic Surgery in Manhattan's Upper East Side, said he believes the trend is driven by the fashion of wearing sheer tops or thin materials without a bra, leaving the nipples on show. 'You see a lot of celebrities now wearing see-through dresses,' he said. Read more: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/health/article-4655630/The-rise-designer-nipples.html#ixzz4mG5ZN1Zr
