The sends a very wrong signal to a young Yoruba child growing up, especially those with roots from Lagos.. how someone will cross river Niger, trave over 1,000 miles from his State to be giving terms and conditions in another State... ahh, that's bad and unacceptable TBH. Sanwo Olu is currently being dragged on X over this issue as we speak. |
Politics › Illegal Waste Disposal To Attract ₦250,000 Fine, Three-Month Jail Term — Lagos by Slytiger(op): 4:13pm On Jun 03, 2025 |
The Lagos State Government has announced that anyone caught dumping refuse illegally or littering public spaces will pay a fine of ₦250,000 or spend up to three months in prison.
The state Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Mr. Tokunbo Wahab, made the announcement on Tuesday at a media briefing, warning that “serial offenders will face even stiffer punishments.”
The Ministry of Environment and Water Resources says Wahab’s message leaves no room for excuses, as he reads the riot act to residents who treat environmental laws as optional
“We won’t drop the ball.
“We would continue to ramp up our enforcement and sensitisation,” he declared.
All these are detailed in a statement issued by the ministry’s Director Public Affairs, Kunle Adeshina, on Tuesday.
“Let me reiterate that the ban on cart pushers has not been lifted because they are the ones that dump wastes indiscriminately across the state.
“Residents should desist from patronising them and always patronise registered PSP,” Wahab warned.
He lamented the actions of developers “dumping building materials on drains or roads”, stressing that such sites “will be sealed up and the owners prosecuted.”
The state has already prosecuted over 3,000 offenders, but Wahab said this was “just the beginning”.
Enforcement teams from LAWMA, KAI, and other agencies are now working round the clock to “arrest, prosecute, name, and shame” all convicted violators.
A particularly disturbing focus was on squatters on pedestrian bridges, where open defecation and petty crime have made these essential walkways dangerous.
“They dissuade pedestrians from using the bridges and in turn endanger lives,” Wahab said.
The government is also preparing for the July 1 enforcement of the ban on single-use plastics, part of its efforts tied to World Environment Day (June 5).
The theme, “Ending Plastic Pollution,” underscores the urgency.
“There is no going back.
“After an 18-month moratorium to producers, distributors and users… the ban on single-use plastics and Styrofoam food packs will be enforced,” Wahab declared.
As the Ed-el-Kabir celebration approaches, Wahab called on residents to be mindful of waste generated during animal slaughter and festivities.
“All generated wastes should be sorted, bagged, and handed over to the approved PSP operators across all the wards in the state,” he urged.
His final call was for shared responsibility.
“The government has done its part. “Now residents must do theirs,” he said. https://punchng.com/illegal-waste-disposal-to-attract-n250000-fine-three-month-jail-lagos/

THINK YORUBA FIRST REJECTS SOUTH EAST INTERFERENCE IN LAGOS' GOVERNANCE.
In an audacious, repugnant and provocative move, Gov Hope Uzodinma announced been part of a 'Joint committee' of South East leaders and Government meeting to save properties belonging to their kinsmen from demolition.
Properties owned by many Yorubas have suffered such fate previously without their Governors interfering. Also, Eastern Governors have consistently demolished properties in Gov Uzodinma's region without a word from these disrespectful leaders.
The temerity and bold face to even dare question a Yoruba Governor from enforcing the law to effect genuine development, indicates that they truly view Lagos as a No man's land. How did we get here?
As an institution, we strongly advise Southeast Governors to redirect their attention to making their region comfortable enough for investors and their indigenes. Even accommodating such engagements puts us at risk of handing over a conquered land to our children. We call for the immediate dissolution of the nauseatingly annoying 'Joint committee'.
Is it not even ludicrous that same people projecting Lagos as 'smelling', called on their leaders to stop Lagos from doing the needful for a cleaner state?
The only way to a peaceful country is Mutual respect of boundaries. Gov Uzodinma & his fellow 'journeymen' must be told not only to retreat but to never attempt such in future.

Sheuns: Kiriji war was between the Ekiti-parapo and Oyo and Ibadan. Ibadan was the war machine of the Old Oyo empire. Oyo did not fall to the Fulanis.
Oyo and the entire South western part of Nigeria fell to the British after the 16 years of the Kiriji war. Oyo had his own army. You are mixing eras up. Some of the armies relocated to Ibadan and became independent. Ogedengne trained at Ibadan but was never part of Oyo army. As per kiriji war. Not only Oyo and Ibadan. It was badically a western vs eastern yoruba war. |

Sheuns: Which
1. Oyo defended all south western region of Nigeria?
2. Same Oyo that Egba, Ekiti (Kiriji war) revolted against and chased off their lands? 1. Is correct. Oyo never had control over Ife, Ekiti, Ijebu, Ondo, and Benin as stated by goodvibes earlier. 2. Kiriji was against Ibadan and not oyo. Oyo fell to the fulanis in the 1820-30s, and the Alaafin fled further to the South to their present day location. Clapperton documented this era in his book about the decline of Oyo. Ibadan rose to power and reigned supreme between 1830 till the end of Kiriji war in the 1880s. Ibadan appointed Ajele (tribute collector) in Ekiti. Something Oyo was never able to achieve. |

Biodun556: ibadan was under Oyo. It a Oyo war camp Ibadan was originally created by an Ife prince. Ibadan fell when Oyo became an Empire. After the fall of Oyo empire, Ibadan became independent and became a minister empire on its own and extended further than the reach of Oyo.

Politics › Oyo Assembly Approves Rotation Of Monarchs’ Chairmanship by Slytiger(op): 2:31pm On May 24, 2025 |
The Oyo State House of Assembly, on Tuesday, okayed rotation of Chairmanship of Obas among the Alaafin of Oyo, Olubadan of Ibadanland and Soun of Ogbomosoland.
The bill was passed during plenary session following the presentation of the report of the House Committee on Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters and State Honours by its Vice Chairman, Bamidele Adeola.
It resolved that “the Chairmanship position should be rotated among the Alaafin of Oyo, the Olubadan of Ibadanland and the Soun of Ogbomosoland.
The bill, which passed its second reading on the floor of the House last Thursday, had generated heated argument among the traditional rulers and stakeholders in the state.
While some stakeholders from Ibadanland and Ogbomosoland vilified the bill, others saw it as a welcomed development.
It was, however, passed for the amendment after a third reading at the plenary on Tuesday.
The House has also approved the appointment of the 13 Chairmen of the Council, including the Otun and Osi Olubadan of Ibadanland.
The resolution of the House did not go down well with two lawmakers from Oyo East and Atiba Constituencies, Olorunpoto Rahman and Gbenga Oyekola Atiba constituency, respectively.
They walked out while the House was deliberating on the recommendation of the committee
In a sideline interview with newsmen, Rahman said, “We should be guided by the truth on whatever law that we made. Everyone knows the position of Alaafin. We are not out of touch with the history.
“We are not satisfied with the process that the committee walked through. There was neither public hearing nor stakeholders engagement. There is no instance where they invited anyone from Oyo to come and speak to this bill. I have serious issues with that,” he added.
Traditional leaders and stakeholders from Ibadanland and Ogbomosoland on Monday opposed a proposed legal amendment by the Oyo State House of Assembly seeking to make the Alaafin of Oyo the permanent chairman of the state’s Council of Obas and Chiefs.
The opposition was contained in a joint statement issued in Ibadan and signed by Mogajis, Baales, monarchs, the Central Council of Ibadan Indigenes, the Ibadan Compounds Peace Initiative, prominent sons and daughters of Ibadanland, and Mogajis from the Soun Ruling Houses of Ogbomoso. https://punchng.com/oyo-assembly-approves-rotation-of-monarchs-chairmanship/

Politics › 2027: I Will Run On The Labour Party Platform – Peter Obi by Slytiger(op): 1:36pm On May 24, 2025 |
ABUJA: The Presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the 2023 election, Peter Obi, has assured his supporters that he will contest the 2027 general election on the platform of the LP.
He gave the assurance while speaking to a group of young supporters in a 7-minute, 16-second video circulating on the party’s WhatsApp platform on Saturday.
Obi explained to his audience that what appears to be an internal crisis in the two dominant opposition political parties – the Labour Party and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) – has the government’s imprint written all over them.
In response to a question on which platform he intended to contest the 2027 elections, Obi said, “I will still continue to run in the Labour Party. I’m a member of the Labour Party.”
While answering another question from a youth who was apparently disturbed about what appears to be Obi’s aloofness towards the LP’s crisis, the former Anambra State Governor said, “What is happening in the Labour Party and the PDP is caused by the government, quote me anywhere.
“We had a problem in our party before, in the past. Yar’Adua was the president. I went to him then; he called the INEC Chairman (Prof. Maurice Iwu) and told him I don’t want any problem in any party. We were forced to fix it.”
“But today, in all the parties, there are problems; these are deliberate problems caused by the system. These are some of the things I want to clean up if I have the opportunity.
“Parties will function very well because you can’t have a system working without a strong opposition.”
He charged Nigerians to take responsibility for ensuring that their votes count because, even if agents are paid by political parties to look after their interests, the ultimate decision about the people’s votes counting rests with voters.
The LP standard bearer appealed to Nigerian youths and the electorate not to be discouraged because positive change will also be resisted by those who are beneficiaries of the old order.
He equally noted that, left to him, there should be a retirement age for politicians seeking public office.
Obi said that by the time the 2027 election holds, he would be 65 years old, adding that he would not want to be contesting for elections in his 70s. https://www.vanguardngr.com/2025/05/2027-ill-run-on-the-labour-party-platform-peter-obi/#google_vignette

Politics › Peter Obi Can’t Lead Nigeria — LP Factional Chairman Says As He Dumps Party by Slytiger(op): 5:30am On May 23, 2025 |
The internal crisis rocking the Labour Party (LP) took a dramatic turn on Thursday as one of its factional national chairmen, Callistus Okafor, announced his exit from the party.
Okafor cited unresolved leadership tussles and disappointment with the party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi.
Okafor, who addressed a press conference in Abuja, said the decision followed extensive deliberations by his faction’s National Working Committee and National Executive Council.
“My team and I had carefully looked at what is happening in the Labour Party, including the crises that have been going on for seven years, and wondered how long it will continue,” he said.
He claimed to be leaving with an estimated five million supporters and declared his new destination to be Team Wazobia Nigeria, a socio-political and non-partisan movement.
“I hereby stand today to announce to Nigerians and all the Labour Party faithful who are under my own faction that we are pulling out today as a team,” he said.
“We are moving from the Labour Party to Team Wazobia Nigeria. This crisis has come to a point where it’s no longer healthy in the Labour Party.”
Okafor blamed Obi for failing to resolve the lingering leadership crisis, saying his inaction raised questions about his capacity to govern a country like Nigeria.
“When His Excellency Peter Obi joined us in 2022, what did he do? He supported Abure, who has become his archenemy today.
He supported him in everything he did despite the warning by our former National Treasurer, Ms Oluchi Opara, about his several embezzlements of Labour Party money,” he said.
“This is the time for reality. So, if he can’t govern the Labour Party, for me, he can’t govern Nigeria. And that is why I have to leave.”
Okafor ruled out returning to the Peoples Democratic Party, saying, “You can see their governors and National Assembly members defecting every day into APC. What it means is that APC is the appealing party as of today.” https://www.vanguardngr.com/2025/05/peter-obi-cant-lead-nigeria-lp-factional-chairman-says-as-he-dumps-party/
