At least 10 people have been killed in a brutal attack by suspected gunmen on Amagu village in Ishielu Local Government Area of Ebonyi State. The suspected herders also selectively burned houses and destroyed properties valued at millions of naira in the community.

The incident happened on Sunday.

According to the state police command spokesperson, Joshua Ukandu, security operatives recovered 10 bodies after the attack. Ukandu stated that the police are currently investigating the incident, and normalcy has returned to the area.

“Several houses were also burnt selectively in the area, and other properties destroyed. Upon receipt of the information, we drafted police operatives to the area.

“We are currently investigating the incident while normalcy has returned to the area,” the PPRO stated. “We also recovered 10 corpses from the area. At the moment, our personnel are there, and normalcy is returning to the area,” Ukandu added.

Eyewitnesses reported that the attackers, armed with cutlasses and guns, launched the attack in the early hours of Sunday. The Chairperson of Ishielu LGA, Mrs. Ifeoma Agwu, confirmed that authorities are still evacuating bodies and assessing the full extent of the casualties.

Former Ebonyi State University Academic Staff Union of Universities (EBSU-ASUU) Chairman, Prof. Ndubuisi Idenyi, a resident of the community, described the attack as tragic. “My village, Amegu Nkalaha, was attacked today by herdsmen. Many have been killed, and houses have been razed. What a black Sunday!” he lamented. Prof. Idenyi noted that the casualty count could increase as security agencies and local authorities intensify recovery efforts, especially in farmlands.

The attack has sent shockwaves through the community, and authorities are working to restore peace and order.

Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency have saved the life of a 59-year-old businessman, Chijioke Igbokwe after he underwent emergency surgery to remove 57 out of 81 pellets of cocaine lodged in his stomach.

The surgery, an exploratory laparotomy, was performed after Igbokwe spent seven days struggling to excrete the illicit substance, which he had ingested in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

A statement released on Sunday by the agency’s spokesman, Femi Babafemi, said Igbokwe was arrested on January 26, 2025, at Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, during the inward clearance of passengers on an Ethiopian Airlines flight.

He added that a body scan conducted by NDLEA officers confirmed he had ingested illicit drugs, after which he was immediately placed under excretion observation at the agency’s medical facility.

Babafemi said, “Investigations revealed that Igbokwe, who claims to be a clothing trader at Arena, Oshodi, Lagos, departed Lagos on January 22 for Addis Ababa, where he ingested the 81 wraps of cocaine on 23 January before boarding a flight to Beirut, Lebanon, to deliver the illicit consignment for a fee of $3,000.

“Upon his arrival in Beirut, he was denied entry because he had less than $2,000, the minimum amount required for admission. He was subsequently deported to Addis Ababa, where he attempted to excrete the illicit drugs but failed. He then travelled to Lagos on January 25 with the consignment still in his system but was arrested upon arrival at the Lagos airport by NDLEA officers on January 26.

“After five days under excretion observation, he was only able to expel 24 pellets following initial medical intervention at the agency’s medical facility and Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, Ikeja. With time running out and complications arising from underlying medical conditions, he was eventually admitted to a tertiary hospital, where he underwent an exploratory laparotomy to extract the remaining 57 wraps of cocaine. The procedure was carried out after his wife and brother signed the necessary consent forms on 30 January.”

Babafemi stated that in total, the NDLEA recovered 81 cocaine pellets, weighing 1.943 kilograms, from Igbokwe’s body.

In another operation, Babafemi said NDLEA operatives intercepted a 2,000-kilogram shipment of Ghanaian Loud, a potent strain of cannabis, at Lekki Beach 29 January 29.

He added that two suspects, Sunday Awoyede and Christopher Cletus, were arrested while attempting to load the drugs onto a truck.

Babafemi further disclosed that “another suspect, Lawal Idris Olasunkanmi, was also arrested the same day with 55kg of skunk during a raid at his base in the Mushin area of Lagos.”

The state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Tochukwu Ikenga, could not be reached to confirm the incident as he did not pick his call or respond to the SMS message.

UMUAHIA- A man, identified as Ogeoma Ogbonna, has beheaded his father, Azubuike Ogbonna, in Umuomei community, in Obingwa council area of Abia state.

Vanguard gathered that after beheading his father, Ogeoma later dug a hole where he buried the severed head before neighbors were attracted to the incident.

The father’s body lay in a pool of blood as sympathizers thronged the compound and expressed shock over what could have led Ogeoma to kill his father.

Community sources told Vanguard that Ogeoma who is a palm cutter, has been showing signs of mental illness and was always threatening to harm people.

He was alleged to have earlier threatened to kill his father before executing the evil act, few hours later.

“Ogeoma has been showing signs of mental illness. He was always threatening to harm people. But nobody in this community knew that he will get to the extent of cutting off his father’s head.

“We are still in shock on how he could kill his father. Before neighbors were called in to see what happened, he had already buried the head in a shallow grave in the compound. He took people and showed them the grave,” a native of the community, said.

Commander Matuwo Olufokunbi of the United States Navy has become the first Nigerian-American to qualify as a nuclear engineer under the prestigious U.S. Navy Nuclear Propulsion Program.

The historic milestone also makes him the third Nigerian-born officer to command a U.S. Navy warship.

Victor Agunbiade, a fellow Nigerian-born U.S. Navy officer, made this known on his X handle on Thursday.

Sharing his excitement, Agunbiade wrote, "I celebrate this rare milestone achievement, brother."

"Big congratulations to my brother CDR Olufokunbi Matuwo- another Nigeria born US Navy Commander takes the helm of USS OAK HILL (LSD 51). He is the third Nigeria-born to Command US Navy warship. Proud of you brother!!!

Meanwhile, the USS Oak Hill (LSD 51) confirmed CDR Matuwo Olufokunbi as the new commanding officer of the Nation's Protector.

Confirming the development in a brief statement released on Thursday via Facebook, the announcement read: "Today, we bid farewell to CDR Jason Nowell as CDR Matuwo Olufokunbi assumed command of our Nation's Protector.

Olufokunbi enlisted in the Navy as an Electronic Technician in January 2001, was accepted into the Seaman to Admiral Program, and graduated from Old Dominion University in May 2008 with a degree in Electrical Engineering.

He is also a graduate of the Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program, JPME Phase 1 Qualified, and holds a Master in Engineering Management from Old Dominion University.

Ashore, he served at Commander, Navy Recruiting Command as Nuclear Programs Officer and Commander, Naval Surface Forces, Atlantic as the Naval Surface Forces Expeditionary, Amphibious Warfare (AMW) and Mine Warfare (MIW) Warfighting Requirement and Assessment Lead.

His military decorations include the Navy Commendation Medal (4 Awards), Navy Achievement Medal (3 Awards), and various unit, campaign, and service awards.
