Politics / Youths Protest As Absence Of Magistrate Stalls Seun Kuti’s Trial by smellingmenses: 1:46pm On May 23, 2023 |
Youths protest as absence of magistrate stalls Seun Kuti’s trial There was confusion on Tuesday morning at the Yaba Chief Magistrates Court, Lagos State, as youths gathered outside the court to protest for the freedom of the Afrobeat musician, Seun Kuti. A source, who pleaded anonymity told The PUNCH, that in the absence of the magistrate, Adeola Olatunbosun, the trial was postponed to Wednesday, May 24, 2023. The trial was supposed to be held today, following the plea by the police last week to extend the defendant’s stay in police custody by four days to enable them to conclude their investigation. “The trial has been postponed till tomorrow, May 24, 2023, because the judge is not around, the source said. However, at noon, another source revealed that the proceedings might still hold, pending when the magistrate returns. One of the protesters, Godwin Imem, who spoke to our correspondent, lamented that the court was being unfair by allowing the musician to be kept in police custody over the same mistakes that the police make. He said, “I just think they are trying to make a scapegoat out of Seun Kuti. I don’t see anything wrong with him slapping a policeman because the police also brutalise civilians. It’s his fundamental right to be provoked or angry, he did not steal or kill, and the officer himself was not injured I just feel they are over-extending and escalating the whole issue. “For the fact that he, Kuti has not been granted bail is very mischievous, so we want a judiciary that is fair and unbiased and that will deal with issues the way it should.” “I am not in support of what Seun did, but, he acted as the imperfect person that he is.” Joshua Benjamin, a hustler, who doubles as a fan of Kuti, said, “I have been beaten up by policemen countless times, Seun Kuti is a good person, and I learn a lot from him. “Whenever he is online on Instagram, he posts things that I learn from. No matter what he has done, he should be set free,” he said.

Politics / Tinubu Not Sponsoring Apapa, Says Anambra Labour Party Chair by smellingmenses: 9:40pm On May 20, 2023 |
Tinubu not sponsoring Apapa, says Anambra Labour Party chair …Insists Abure remains suspended until he accounts for N400m party fund The acting Chairman of the Labour Party in Anambra State, Mr Peter Okoye, has insisted that it is not true that the factional national chairman of the party, Lamidi Apapa, is being sponsored by the President-elect, Bola Tinubu, to disrupt the party activities. Speaking with journalists shortly after the Labour Party’s executive meeting in Awka, Anambra State capital, on Saturday, Okoye explained that the allegations against Lamidi are untrue, baseless and should be disregarded. He also insisted that the National Chairman of the party, Mr Julius Abure, remains suspended until he accounts for the sum of N400 million belonging to the party and clears himself of an alleged forgery and perjury that led to his suspension. “Those allegations are untrue and baseless. He has been a member of the Labour Party for 21 years and N400 million is at stake and nobody is talking about it. “Our former National Chairman, Julius Abure was suspended for perjury and forgery and other criminal activities in our party. “How can Julius Abure forge somebody’s signature and substitute somebody illegally? “The missing N400 million in question belongs to the party and at the appropriate time, everything would be exposed. “The truth is that the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory suspended him(Abure) and he went to the Court of Appeal in respect of the ruling of the application filed. *They filed preliminary objections because of jurisdiction and the Court ruled that it has jurisdiction and he went on appeal and so we are waiting for the outcome of the appeal.” He insisted that no validly conducted congress produced any state executive members of the Labour Party across the country, adding that Abure organised a meeting of the National Executive Committee of the party in Asaba despite his suspension. 6 Likes 1 Share |

Politics / 2023 Election Best So Far In Nigeria – Itse Sagay by smellingmenses: 10:58pm On Apr 10, 2023 |
2023 election best so far in Nigeria – Itse Sagay The Chairman of the Presidential Advisory Committee Against Corruption (PACAC), Prof. Itse Sagay, said the 2023 election was the best so far in the country. Sagay stated this while speaking in an interview on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics. The Chairman hailed the role of the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) in the election. Recall that Asiwaju Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC) was declared the winner of the presidential election, amid criticism that the exercise was marred with violence. Frontline contenders in the election; Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Labour Party (LP)’s Peter Obi have challenged the outcome of the poll. But, Sagay maintained that the election was credible, citing APC’s loss in its Lagos State stronghold. He said, “In my personal opinion, in terms of representing the minds and wishes of Nigerians in an election, this is probably the best election we have had.” The Senior lawyer noted that previous elections especially during other democratic dispensations were marred by irregularities. He said, “So, we had good elections in 2011, 2015, and 2019. But in terms of representing or interpreting what Nigerians feel, it [2023]is the best election we have ever had. “If you look at the ways things have gone with the BVAS (Bimordal Voter Accreditation System), the very idea that the APC was defeated in Lagos, that should make you realise immediately that these are very credible elections. If you go through the whole country, it is the same sort of accuracy and reflection on the feelings of Nigerians.” Sagay argued that the 2023 elections were determined by ethnicity, religion, and organisational skills. The PACAC boss said, “But above all, what gave Tinubu the edge was his capacity to organise, plan and plant agencies and supporters and various administrative bodies all over the states in the country. “So, that in my view is the explanation of what happened,” he added. “So, I believe it expressed the true mind of Nigerians as of today. There is something natural about the results.” Meanwhile, Sagay, said the Labour Party “did excellently well” in some areas, especially in the South-East but rued the party’s “abysmal results” in the North-East and North-West regions.

I enjoy ‘Obidients’ backing as Labour Party Chairman Lamidi Apapa has insisted that he is the acting National Chairman of the Labour Party, LP, saying he enjoys the support of the followers of the party’s presidential candidate Peter Obi, otherwise known as “Obidients.” Sagay stated this while speaking in an interview on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics. The Labour Party chieftain insists that he is the party’s acting national chairman. He said, “As of today, I am the acting national chairman of the party.” Recall that, Apapa, the deputy national chairman (south) had last week declared himself as the party’s national chairman following a fresh legal tussle in the party. After the his declaration, Labour Party state chairmen in the 36 states of the federation disowned the factional leadership, insisting on Julius Abure as the party’s leader. But, Apapa maintains he is the acting national chairman of the party. “As of today, I am the acting national chairman of the party,” he said. Apapa has been accused of being sponsored by opponents to destroy the party, the LP chieftain refuted the claims, saying as a foundational member of the LP, he won’t do such. “That is not true. Nobody is sponsoring me. For anybody to now say I want to run down the party, that is a lie,” Apapa said. He says since a court had ordered four national officers of the party including Abure to stop parading themselves as such, his move is in the right direction. “Now, if that has happened, what else? The next person should take over,” he said, noting that seven members of the LP National Working Committee (NWC) voted for him as the acting chairman of the party.” When asked if Obi’s supporters are behind him, Apapa said, “I think so. When you say Obidients’ side, are they not Nigerians?” But Apapa said some of the “Obidient” movement, who have criticised his action were acting out of ignorance. He said, “Let me tell you if they know what transpired, they will know they are acting out of ignorance.” 1 Like
