Limpopo star, Kcee, got the embarrassment of his life recently while on his American tour when cab drivers quizzed him on the fate of the Chibok girls who were kidnapped by Boko Haram in April. Kcee shared his experience during a press conference to unveil PMAN’s peace pet project tagged Lighting Up The Unity Flame, at PMAN office, Opebi, Lagos, earlier in the week. “I was thoroughly embarrassed in the US a couple of days ago while I was on tour. In New York, the airport cab driver who took me to my hotel, as soon as he discovered I was Nigerian asked, ‘have they found those girls.’ I was so embarrassed I had nothing to say. Again it happened in Los Angeles when another cab man asked me the same question. Can you imagine a cab man saying that? It was very embarrassing and I realised that whether we like it or not, where ever we find ourselves in the world, we must defend the image of our country but we have to start from the very source of this problems.” According to the singer, it was a reflection of the fact that indeed a lot was wrong about the image of the country. “That’s the reason I have come out to support PMAN today as it unveils its pet project which is the lighting of the unity flame. Today it is Ebola, tomorrow it is Boko Haram and before you say jackie Robinson, its kidnapping. We all need to pull our resources together to make change, we have the capacity to do that.” Initiated by PMAN, the Lighting Up The Unity Flame train will travel around the country before climaxing on October 1 with a National Peace Concert at the Nnamdi Azikiwe National Stadium, Abuja, on Independence Day October 1. The event also witnessed the lighting of the Flame of hope by the Chairman of the association’s Caretaker Committee, Kevin Lucciano Gabriel, who was assisted by Kcee, Daddy Showkey, Brownbread and Harrysong among a host of other artistes. SCIENTISTS say they have found how the lethal Ebola virus blocks and disables the body’s ability to battle infections in a discovery that should help the search for potential cures and vaccines. A group of scientists in the United States found that Ebola carries a protein called VP24 that interferes with a molecule called interferon, which is vital to the immune response. “One of the key reasons that Ebola virus is so deadly is because it disrupts the body’s immune response to the infection,” said Chris Basler of the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, New York, who worked on the study. “Figuring out how VP24 promotes this disruption will suggest new ways to defeat the virus.” The team, lead by Gaya Amarasinghe from Washington University School of Medicine, found that VP24 works by stopping something called “transcription factor STAT1” – which carries interferon’s antiviral message – from entering the nucleus of a cell and initiating an immune response. “This study shows just how nefarious the Ebola virus can be,” said Ben Neuman, a virologist at Britain’s university of Reading who was not directly involved in this study. “Ebola virus carries a small tool that intercepts the cell’s distress signals, and when this happens, it disables some of the most useful machinery that our bodies have for fighting Ebola. That leaves the body with only crude defences that are less effective at stopping the virus, and end up causing much of the damage that can eventually lead to death.” Ebola is one of the most deadly diseases known in humans and has a case fatality rate of up to 90 percent. In the current epidemic in West Africa, the virus has infected more than 1,800 people. So far, 1,013 of these have died the vast majority in Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone. source: http://www.vanguardngr.com/2014/08/scientists-discover-ebola-virus-disables-immune-response/ |
Mother and son are put under medical supervision after the woman developed a fever and vomiting on the journey to Istanbul ISTANBUL A woman showing symptoms of the Ebola virus has been put under segregation after arriving at Istanbul’s Ataturk International Airport. The Nigerian woman and her four-year-old son were on a Turkish Airlines flight from Lagos in Nigeria to Istanbul on Tuesday when the mother, named as 32-year-old Stella Omorowa by the airline, told the cabin crew she was feeling unwell. Both mother and son were transferred to a nearby hospital after the mother showed symptoms of fever and vomiting. They arrived in Istanbul to catch a connecting flight to Barcelona, Spain. Ebola, a contagious disease for which there is no definite treatment or cure, has been responsible for more than 1,000 deaths in West Africa since and the latest outbreak in February. The virus has been largely confined to Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone except two deaths in Nigeria and a health worker who died in Spain on Tuesday. In a statement, the Turkish Health Ministry said the passengers were taken under supervision as a precaution, adding that it was too early to say if they have the virus. “Since they are coming from an Ebola-affected country, Nigeria, the Health Ministry is taking every possibility into account,” the statement said. Last week, Turkish Health Minister Mehmet Muezzinoglu said Turkey does not face any risk from Ebola. He told reporters that Turkey had taken measures against any possible outbreak but did not give any details of the precautions. The tropical fever, which first appeared in 1976 in Sudan and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, can be transmitted to humans from wild animals and also spreads through contact with the body fluids of an infected person. Doctors say common symptoms of Ebola include high fever and headaches, followed by vomiting and internal and external bleeding.
