Late military leader Chief Odumegwu Ojukwu headed the unsuccessful move by Biafra to secede from Nigeria that ended exactly 46 years ago on January 15, 1970. For three years, Ojukwu fought to keep Biafra from being defeated. With supply lines cut, millions of Biafrans slowly starved to death. After the civil war ended in 1970, the leader of the Biafra lived in voluntary exile. The arrest of Radio Biafra director Nnamdi Kanu caused a spate in agitation for the independence of Biafra territories. However, remembering how many people lost their lives in the civil war (up to three people were said to have died) Nigerians warned of not repeating the battle. Famous General Ojukwu died on November 26, 2011, but his wise words will live forever. READ ALSO: Ojukwu’s Widow Visited Nigeria To mark the anniversary of the conflicts see top powerful quotes of the late Biafran leader. 1. “I still believe that the one thing that will bring peace, absolute peace, to this country, the type of peace we want attached to development, is to liberate Ndi Igbo and there is no better act of liberation than accepting that they have equal right in Nigeria.” 2. “It is said that the 1966 coup that failed was strictly an Igbo coup, but then the irony of history is that it was the late General Aguiyi Ironsi, an Igbo who single-handedly dismantled the coup in Lagos, while my humble self, another Igbo-man rendered it immobile in the north.” 3. “We are humans. We live. We fight, fight because the decision to be free is a decision taken freely and collectively, because to become involved in violent struggle for freedom is the only honor left to an oppressed people threatened with genocide, because in the final analysis the only true bulwark against death is to live.” 4. “The history of the world is a chronicle of oppression.” 5. “What I have become, in this struggle is the mouthpiece of my people. I go where they push and no more. 6. “If a leader accepts himself as already dead to society, there will be no reason for cowardice in his leadership.” 7. ”We make no apologies for the social phenomenon known as the Biafran revolution; rather, we proclaim with pride the inevitability of our struggle, the indestructability of our people, and the assured finality of our success.” 8. “Since oppression is maintained by force, it is only possible to remove that oppression by a counterforce.” 9. ”Biafra is a child of circumstance. His existence and survival are always a marvel, sometimes bordering on a miracle. His life is a tribute to man, his courage is his endurance, his ingenuity is his humanity.” 10. “One thing that frightens leaders and lead them to a number of excesses is usually fear of death. No leader should fear death. In fact, you should accept the fact that from the moment of leadership you are sacrificed to death.” 11. “For unity to be meaningful it has to be creative, not the unity of Jonah in the whale but the unity of holy matrimony. The first can only lead to defecation, the second to procreation.” 12. “We do not play politics. We are not masochists; rather, we are people who choose to hunger a little to remain alive instead of feeding fat to become respectable corpses.” |

On January 15, 1966, Chukwuma Kaduna Nzeogwu led the first ever-military coup in Nigeria that led to the death of Sir Ahmadu Bello, the Sardauna of Sokoto and Premier of Northern Nigeria, Chief S.I. I have a feeling that we might be so obsessed
with predictions we could lose sight of what we
are going to miss this new year. Why fuss over
what will be in the New Year when you can
cherish fond memories of years gone by?
Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala and Diezani Alison-
Madueke Imagine the anxiety that Revd. Father Ejike
Mbaka’s prediction of a likely attempt on
President Mohammadu Buhari’s life is causing
already. What’s the point? Even as Citizen
Buhari, Boko Haram tried to kill him for speaking
against them. It shouldn’t take much effort to see that with his expanded war not only against Boko Haram but also against their white-collar cousins in the last administration, Buhari has made more enemies. They will not only be happy to kill him, they will be more than happy to kill him quickly, if they can. Yet, to fret over such sinister plans, as some have done lately, is a waste of time. There is no use indulging a fantasy, that famous currency of beggars. Instead, we need to spare a moment for the things we took for granted in 2015, and be thankful for them. Such moments, like the Comet, only come our way once in a lifetime. Think about the amazing moments with Dame Patience Jonathan, the fire that lit up the Presidential Villa for five years. A friend of mine identified the former First Lady’s gift for guilelessness early in the Jonathan administration. No, it wasn’t her wailing and the profuse tears shed at the home of the Yar’Aduas when she and her husband paid Turai a condolence visit. It was on another occasion. My friend and his TV crew had gone to cover some event at Aso Rock and the former First Lady was quite surprised to see them because, at the time, there was no love lost between the proprietor of the station and the Jonathans. Overjoyed to see my friend and his crew, the former First Lady turned to him: “So you people are here, eh? Eh…eh, thank God oh! You came to cover usalive?” Of course, that was only the beginning. By the time President Jonathan left office last year, there was already a repertoire of Dame Patience moments, which her successors can never dream of, much less even try to exceed. Amazing testimonies of how she was dead for seven days and rose again; her tears for widows and for the manhood left behind by their husbands; a glimpse of her purple heart in the Chai, Chai, Dia Ris God episode, are all gone, gone forever, never to replay in the New Year. This brings me to the presidential quintet of which the Dame was also a prominent and influential member. It was, I think, former President Olusegun Obasanjo who said there were five persons in Jonathan’s presidency – four women and one man – and the least effective of them was the man. Of course, there are a few high profile women in Buhari’s presidency, but seriously, which of them can compare with Diezani Allison-Madueke, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Stella Oduah, or Dame Patience Jonathan? These were women who not only knew their onions but also damn well knew how to peel it! They were ministers who other ministers lobbied to get approval for funds to run their ministries and then for favour to get the funds released! These women of power paved the road to the heart of the Jonathan government and made the men who worked with them look like silly apprentices. That magic is now gone and no talisman can ever bring it back again. Femi Fani-Kayode is still active, but he’s not and cannot be anything near his combination with Doyin Okupe. We’re going to miss Okupe’s talent for exaggeration and total absence of a sense of danger. He was so self-confident that he offered that he should be called a “bastard” if the All Progressives Congress survived beyond one year. And who can forget the incredible selfie he took after he lost his job following the PDP’s defeat in March? As he floated in his swimming pool, he snapped himself promising that he’ll remain afloat, in spite of the defeat. He should, really, with enough exercise and creativity to fill his idle moments. In comparison with the Okupe years, Femi Adesina and Garba Shehu will be a snooze. We will be missing the letters as well. It doesn’t look 2016 will be the year of letters; except, of course, letters to the EFCC, a few of which are already embarrassingly being jointly written by some Papa & co. who raided the treasury. But that’s not the type of letter I’m talking about. I’m talking about the famous letters between Sanusi Lamido Sanusi and Jonathan over the missing $49.8billion? $20billion? Or $12billion? Remember also the even more famous one between Obasanjo and Jonathan over the former’s concern that the country was adrift; and of course, Jonathan’s response to “Baba.” Obasanjo will be on holiday this year, making only private visits to the Villa, and hopefully spending more time in his farm to keep the rodents out of mischief. Social statisticians have also reliably informed me that activities in and around five-star hotels in Abuja may not be as vibrant as they were last year. No more will top level political appointees pop their heads around the premium floors of these big hotels in search of wafers and forbidden fruit unofficially provided as a part of their rite of initiation to public office. It’s everyman for himself. Enjoy change! |
A church in Jiayi , Taiwan built in the shape of a Cinderella- like glass shoe has created headlines ahead of its proposed opening prior to the Chinese New Year. It is 17m high and 11m wide , and made of 320 pieces of glass . Constructed almost entirely from glass , the main structure of the building took more than two months to be built . Hype surrounding the construction has already led to traffic jams nearby from curious commuters . Head of the project , Zheng Rongfeng, stated that the church will be open to visitors before the Chinese New Year. It was built for couples to get married and take wedding photos and it has a huge traditional significance. According to their tradition, the bride needs to wear high -heels to tread on tiles and then throw away the shattered pieces before stepping in the bridegroom ’ s family, which signifies the end to past misfortunes and the beginning of a better life .

The female Bre Asts, also known as “the twins” or “the girls”, have remained the most conspicuous and attractive feature of the female Ss E Xual organ. Perhaps, its strategic positioning and function adds to its importance in the life of a woman. Besides the age long biological function of the Bre Asts as a source of food and nourishment for babies, the Bre Ast is also a major source of Ss E Xual attraction for the male specie, just as it is also a key Ss E Xual organ for the woman, highly sensitive to stimulation. The fact that they come in various shapes and sizes, further add to their uniqueness and endearing place in our hearts as humans. As a Ss E Xual organ, the Bre Asts have been known to give immense pleasure to both men and women during Ss E Xual encounters. In fact, some women have reportedly disclosed that they are capable of achieving orgasm even when thoroughly stimulated through sucking and caressing of the Bre Asts alone. Though, because of this highly sensitive nature, some women find it very uncomfortable or even painful to submit their twin girls to constant Ss E Xual manipulation of any kind. Interestingly, men are constantly drawn to the Bre Asts. A lot of this attraction has been attributed to psychological composition, perception and beliefs. For, pray, why would a full grown man be obsessed with sucking some mounds of milkless Bre Asts? I don’t often get logical answers to this question when I ask. The function of the Bre Asts in Ss E Xual behaviour has been attributed to human Face -to -Face copulation that is unusual among other mammals. Since the Bre Ast already serves the function of mother-infant bonding, then it is also excellent for male -female bonding, says an argument. After all, it is just within reach. For those familiar with some of the social media platforms, you would have come across a particular message that has been making the rounds for a couple of years now. Purportedly attributed to the BBC as source, this message usually springs out during the cancer awareness months and in support of cancer prevention campaign. As expected, it elicits a wide range of controversies from both men and women, from humour to disdain and Ss E Xual innuendoes, while some others believe the content hook, line and sinker. The purported message is claimed to have been issued by the Ministry of Health in the fight against Bre Ast cancer. One of the versions I have received read thus: Very soon, women will be paying men to have their Bre Asts sucked! According to a report on BBC website, Doctors recommend that women reduce the risk of getting Bre Ast cancer by having their Bre Asts sucked thoroughly and vigorously. It is said that regular sucking of the Bre Ast lowers the risk level that tends to build up lumps leading to Bre Ast cancer. The Bre Ast must be sucked as often as possible. Help women fight Bre Ast cancer today. Men, please do your part and suck a Bre Ast now! And women, please endeavour to make it available regularly…… This message is from the Ministry of Health in the fight against Bre Ast cancer. I have tried several times without success to get a confirmation for this story on the mentioned websites including cancer.org and some others in related fields. But perhaps, someone out there knows the original and authentic source of this message? Please share it with us! As interesting as this message may be, as well as the different responses it receives anytime it is being passed around, depending on which side of the divide you find yourself, I am more worried about the health implications attached. Cancer is not something to make jokes out of as it claims millions of lives across the world every year. Again, some frightened lady who hitherto was not in favour of Bre Ast sucking may easily submit herself to torture with the belief that she is suffering for a good reason. Please, let us not confuse issues. Bre Ast feeding is not the same as Bre Ast sucking. Bre Ast feeding is the process of feeding new born and infants with Bre Ast milk. It is this that has been medically proven to be of immense benefit to both mother and child and can prevent Bre Ast cancer. There are no scientifically proven studies indicating that Bre Ast sucking is of any medical benefit to the the woman whose Bre Ast is being sucked or the person doing the sucking. However, what has been scientifically proven is the fact that Bre Ast sucking when properly performed is of immense pleasure to the woman and may sometime on its own lead to orgasm or when combined with some other forms of Ss E Xual stimulation will help a woman to achieve orgasm quicker. Again, neither has any research shown that Bre Ast sucking can give a woman cancer. So ladies, please relax and allow your guys do the job for you. if you are not enjoying the way he is doing it, tell him. I can assure you, it’s a win-win situation. Source: Vanguard |

Background Though first described in the 1950s, the virus causing Lassa disease was not identified until 1969. The virus is a single-stranded RNA virus belonging to the virus family Arenaviridae. About 80% of people who become infected with Lassa virus have no symptoms. One in five infections result in severe disease, where the virus affects several organs such as the liver, spleen and kidneys. Lassa fever is a zoonotic disease, meaning that humans become infected from contact with infected animals. The animal reservoir, or host, of Lassa virus is a rodent of the genus Mastomys, commonly known as the “multimammate rat.” Mastomys rats infected with Lassa virus do not become ill, but they can shed the virus in their urine and faeces. Because the clinical course of the disease is so variable, detection of the disease in affected patients has been difficult. However, when presence of the disease is confirmed in a community, prompt isolation of affected patients, good infection protection and control practices and rigorous contact tracing can stop outbreaks. Symptoms of Lassa fever The incubation period of Lassa fever ranges from 6-21 days. The onset of the disease, when it is symptomatic, is usually gradual, starting with fever, general weakness, and malaise. After a few days, headache, sore throat, muscle pain, chest pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, cough, and abdominal pain may follow. In severe cases facial swelling, fluid in the lung cavity, bleeding from the mouth, nose, vagina or gastrointestinal tract and low blood pressure may develop. Protein may be noted in the urine. Shock, seizures, tremor, disorientation, and coma may be seen in the later stages. Deafness occurs in 25% of patients who survive the disease. In half of these cases, hearing returns partially after 1-3 months. Transient hair loss and gait disturbance may occur during recovery. Death usually occurs within 14 days of onset in fatal cases. The disease is especially severe late in pregnancy, with maternal death and/or fetal loss occurring in greater than 80% of cases during the third trimester. Transmission Humans usually become infected with Lassa virus from exposure to urine or faeces of infected Mastomys rats. Lassa virus may also be spread between humans through direct contact with the blood, urine, faeces, or other bodily secretions of a person infected with Lassa fever. There is no epidemiological evidence supporting airborne spread between humans. Person-to-person transmission occurs in both community and health-care settings, where the virus may be spread by contaminated medical equipment, such as re-used needles. Sexual transmission of Lassa virus has been reported. Lassa fever occurs in all age groups and both sexes. Persons at greatest risk are those living in rural areas where Mastomys are usually found, especially in communities with poor sanitation or crowded living conditions. Health workers are at risk if caring for Lassa fever patients in the absence of proper barrier nursing and infection control practices. Diagnosis Because the symptoms of Lassa fever are so varied and non-specific, clinical diagnosis is often difficult, especially early in the course of the disease. Lassa fever is difficult to distinguish from other viral haemorrhagic fevers such as Ebola virus disease; and many other diseases that cause fever, including malaria, shigellosis, typhoid fever and yellow fever. Definitive diagnosis requires testing that is available only in specialized laboratories. Laboratory specimens may be hazardous and must be handled with extreme care. Lassa virus infections can only be diagnosed definitively in the laboratory using the following tests: antibody enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) antigen detection tests reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) assay virus isolation by cell culture. Treatment and vaccines The antiviral drug ribavirin seems to be an effective treatment for Lassa fever if given early on in the course of clinical illness. There is no evidence to support the role of ribavirin as post- exposure prophylactic treatment for Lassa fever. There is currently no vaccine that protects against Lassa fever. Prevention and control Prevention of Lassa fever relies on promoting good “community hygiene” to discourage rodents from entering homes. Effective measures include storing grain and other foodstuffs in rodent-proof containers, disposing of garbage far from the home, maintaining clean households and keeping cats. Because Mastomys are so abundant in endemic areas, it is not possible to completely eliminate them from the environment. Family members should always be careful to avoid contact with blood and body fluids while caring for sick persons. In health-care settings, staff should always apply standard infection prevention and control precautions when caring for patients, regardless of their presumed diagnosis. These include basic hand hygiene, respiratory hygiene, use of personal protective equipment (to block splashes or other contact with infected materials), safe injection practices and safe burial practices. Health workers caring for patients with suspected or confirmed Lassa fever should apply extra infection control measures to prevent contact with the patient’s blood and body fluids and contaminated surfaces or materials such as clothing and bedding. When in close contact (within 1 metre) of patients with Lassa fever, health-care workers should wear face protection (a face shield or a medical mask and goggles), a clean, non-sterile long-sleeved gown, and gloves (sterile gloves for some procedures). Laboratory workers are also at risk. Samples taken from humans and animals for investigation of Lassa virus infection should be handled by trained staff and processed in suitably equipped laboratories. On rare occasions, travellers from areas where Lassa fever is endemic export the disease to other countries. Although malaria, typhoid fever, and many other tropical infections are much more common, the diagnosis of Lassa fever should be considered in febrile patients returning from West Africa, especially if they have had exposures in rural areas or hospitals in countries where Lassa fever is known to be endemic. Health-care workers seeing a patient suspected to have Lassa fever should immediately contact local and national experts for advice and to arrange for laboratory testing. |
