39' Berezutski doesn't look to be in the best
shape here, and he's signaled to the bench,
apparently unable to continue. Shame for
CSKA, as he's been generally faultless in the
first half. 43' Musa tries to turn on the afterburners to get down the byline and beat Smalling, but the centre-back is on his game and prevents the ball and the man from entering a dangerous area. |
39' Berezutski doesn't look to be in the best

CSKA, as he's been generally faultless in the

37' Rooney takes the ball nicely on the turn
and weighs up his options quickly before
deciding to let fly from about 25 yards, but he
scoops it well over the bar. Not his best effort,
that one. |
35' This is far from a vintage United
performance, with CSKA dealing with their
attacking offerings with little trouble. Some
signs that they may be starting to wake up
though, as Martial is starting to fire in some
decent balls. |
33' Half chance for Wayne Rooney as a cross
from Valencia was deflected towards the near
post. The skipper makes contact but Akinfeev
positions himself right in front of the ball to
block. |
31' DE GEA CALLED INTO ACTION! The
Manchester United keeper has to stick up an
arm acrobatically to tip away a stinger from
Musa, who had collected the ball on the turn
and let fly from distance. |
27' Fernandes looks to have Rojo and Martial
figured out on the right-hand side, and he
drives into space behind the pair once again in
order to drill a low ball into the box, but there
are no takers. |
25' There's a glimpse at a break for Musa,
who looks to have beaten the defence to a
long ball over the top, but Jones and Smalling
team up at the last moment to shepherd the
ball back to De Gea. |
23' Manchester United have not really looked
for Lingard in the opening 23 minutes, and the
youngster has started to drift infield in a bid to
get the ball and get involved in this match. |
21' CSKA have seen far less of the ball but
have definitely been the more threatening
team. They've moved the ball quickly down
the flanks. United are getting too complacent
on the ball and are slow to recover their
defensive position. |
19' United simply have not been able o get
anything going when in possession and more
often than not, they end up surrendering it to
the home side after one too many sideways
passes. |
17' That was the second or third time that
CSKA have been able to break Manchester
United's left flank and this time, they've made
them pay. It looks like a real problem area for
the visitors. |
11' Wernbloom gets by Rojo down the flank
and squeezes the ball into the area, but the
midfielder's cross isn't accurate enough and
it's stabbed away by the toe of Jones in the
end. |
9' United are trying to get Martial activated
down the left-hand side, but so far, CSKA
have thrown back whatever he's been able to
offer on the ball. If that continues, don't be
surprised to see him swap with Rooney. |

7' The game has developed a pattern of
Manchester United probing and passing
patiently in the opposition half, while CSKA sit
back and soak it up, while looking for the
openings on the break. |
5' Manchester United are showing signs of
settling into a rhythm. For now, Herrera is
lining up behind Rooney, with Lingard and
Martial in support on the right and left flank
respectively. |
3' CSKA are already looking a little slack in
possession to start the first half here, as a
turnover in midfield was, fortunately for them,
not quite pounced on by Manchester United. |
1' Off we go! |
Van Gaal has dropped Memphis to the bench,
with Jesse Lingard starting instead. Matteo
Darmian has also been moved to the
substitutes to make room for Antonio Valencia,
who begins on the right side of defence.
Expect some rotation of position among the
attacking unit of Ander Herrera. Wayne Rooney
and Anthony Martial, with the latter two
especially comfortable with swapping roles. |
Lenoid Slutsky makes two changes from his
side's 3-2 win over Ural last time out. Alan
Dzagoev has returned to the CSKA team and
will line up behind lone striker Seydou
Doumbia in a 4-4-1-1 formation for the home
side. Vasili Berezutski also replaces his twin
brother Aleksei in defence, with the latter
dropping to the bench. |
CSKA Subs: Chepchugov, Berezutski,
Nababkin, Canua, Milanov, Golovin,
Panchenko. Man Utd (4-2-3-1): De Gea; Valencia, Jones, Smalling, Rojo; Schweinsteiger, Schneiderlin; Lingard, Herrera, Martial; Rooney. Man Utd Subs: Romero, Fellaini, Darmian, Blind, Carrick, Mata, Memphis. |
CSKA (4-4-1-1): Akinfeev; Mario Fernandes,
Ignashevich, Berezutski, Schennikov; Tosic,
Wernbloom, Eremenko, Musa; Dzagoev;
Doumbia. |
These two sides have only met one time
previously, in the group stages of the 2009-10
tourney. There, the Red Devils won 1-0 in
Russia, before playing out an entertaining 3-3
game back in England. CSKA have not kept a
clean sheet in 18 matches in Europe, but
Manchester United also are on the verge of an
unwanted UCL record - as defeat here will
have them on an unprecedented three-game
losing streak away from home. |
CSKA are currently in the middle of their
longest-ever unbeaten run at home in the
Champions League, having won once and
drawn twice in their last three outings. That
win came courtesy of a 3-2 result over PSV in
the previous matchday that helped keep Group
B tight. They also currently top the Russian
Premier League with 10 wins from their
opening 12 games, and are the only side yet
to taste defeat in the top flight. |
It's been hit and miss for Manchester United
either side of the international break. A 3-0
defeat to Arsenal was followed up by a win
over Everton by an identical scoreline to keep
them within two points of Premier League
leaders Manchester City. In Europe, an
opening-day loss to PSV was negated
somewhat by a triumph over Wolfsburg, with
both matches finishing 2-1. Still some kinks to
work out for Louis van Gaal's side. |
Hello and welcome to our live coverage of the
Champions League clash between CSKA and
Manchester United. Group B is as even as
they come, with all four teams locked on three
points after a win and a defeat apiece in their
opening pair of games. I'm Keeghann Sinanan,
your guide for all the action. |
O Lord give us ds day our daily goals.. |
66' The Gunners have worked incredibly hard
this evening. Can they maintain it for the last
quarter of this match? Xabi Alonso is
becoming a bit frustrated with a lack of
movement in front of him. Changes appear to
be afoot for the visitors with Rafinha warming
up. |
60' Bayern's high pressing is reminiscent of
Pep Guardiola's Barcelona. On this occasion
Sanchez gives the ball away to Lewandowski
whose shot is smartly blocked by Koscielny. It
then falls into the path of Alonso who tries his
luck from distance but it is never troubling
Cech. |
58' Alonso rather cynically brings down
Cazorla in the middle of the park and is rather
fortunate to escape without a booking. Ozil
and Monreal get Arsenal moving forwards and
the move ends with Coquelin slashing the ball
wide from about twenty-five yards. Better
from the Gunners. |
