PoliticsWhere Are Ifeanyi Uba’s 18m TAN Ambassadors? by smsshola(op): 8:55am On Apr 06, 2015
Until penultimate week’s presidential election
was won and lost, one regular face on the
campaign stumps of President Goodluck
Jonathan was Patrick Ifeanyi Uba, the brain
behind the Transformation Ambassadors of
Nigeria (TAN) – a group which claimed to have
secured 18 million signatures across the six geo-
political zones endorsing Jonathan’s re-election
bid. For those who may not know this 43-year-
old businessman from Umuanuka in Otolo,
Nnewi, he is the MD/CEO of Capital Oil and Gas
– a company that deals in importation, storage,
distribution, trading and retailing of oil products.
He first came into the consciousness of
Nigerians during the subsidy payments scandal.
His company was among those indicted by the
Aigboje Aig-Imoukhuede’s Presidential Panel
constituted to look into the findings of the report
of an earlier investigation panel set up by the
Ministry of Finance on Fuel Subsidy payments to
the tune of about N2 trillion. As he was battling
with this indictment, Asset Management
Corporation of Nigeria’s (AMCON) hammer fell
on his company following an Abuja Federal High
Court ruling over an alleged N48.014bn debt. His
adversaries had thought an end had come,
business-wise, for this Anambra businessman.
Alas, they were wrong!
Uba sprang a surprise like any good student of
Niccolo Machiavelli. Like this Florentine
philosopher stated in The Prince: “Never attempt
to win by force what can be won by deception,”
rather than engage in endless legal battles, Uba
opted for Machiavelli’s enduring words. It was
a season of politics and gradually, he wormed
his way into the hearts of the first family. With
that came unhindered access to the Villa and the
opportunity to project himself as a man who
could move mountains for the President, as far
as his re-election bid was concerned. Long
before even seasoned politicians could come up
with the idea of helping Jonathan pursue his re-
election bid, Uba had come up with a scheme –
the President must be persuaded to seek re-
election. And in doing that, he claimed to have
secured 18 million signatures for that purpose.
In carnival-like manner, Uba’s TAN moved round
major capital cities drumming support for
Jonathan and telling those in the corridors of
power that 18 million TAN ambassadors were on
the field working for the president’s re-election.
His group even became a parallel campaign
organisation for the President in some states,
including Bayelsa where it transformed into a
platform for those determined to stop the
governor from seeking a second term.
Along the way, he recovered his lost possessions
and Society Happenings even gathered that he
got much more in terms of emerging as a key
player in the kerosene subsidy regime.
Now that the presidential election has been won
and lost, with Jonathan’s opponent, General
Muhammadu Buhari, declared winner with over
15 million votes, as against Jonathan’s 12
million votes, many are asking: where are the
18million TAN Ambassadors whose signatures
Ubah secured for the president’s second term
bid? Atleast, those 18 million TAN ambassadors
could have given the President three million
votes above those of Buhari.

PoliticsBrief Press Statement By General Muhammadu Buhari, gcfr, President Elect by smsshola(op): 9:00am On Apr 01, 2015
At exactly 5:15pm this evening President
Jonathan called to congratulate me on my
victory. For this I want all Nigerians to
join me in congratulating and appreciating
Mr President for his statesmanship.
President Jonathan engaged in a spirited
campaign and was a worthy opponent. I
extend my hand of fellowship to him. I
look forward to meeting him soon as we
plan the transition from one
administration to another. He will receive
nothing but understanding, cooperation
and respect from me and my team.
The good people of Nigeria, answered the
call of history. When the account of this
fine moment is written, it will be said that
it was the people themselves who led this
nation to democracy.
You stood in line patiently for hours in the
sun, rain and then in the dark to cast
your ballots. Even when the vote was
extended to Sunday in some places, you
still performed your civic duty. You did so
peacefully. You voted with your heart.
Your vote affirms that you believe
Nigeria’s future can be better than what it
is today.
You voted for change and now change
has come.
INEC has released the official results of
the Presidential election. INEC has
declared that I gained the most votes with
the required spread and thus won this
election. In a more profound way, it is
you, Nigerians that have won. The people
have shown their love for our nation and
their belief in democracy.
The declaration of INEC accurately
reflects the will of the people. Whilethere
might have been some logistical obstacles
and irregularities associated with the
exercise, the result shall stand as what
the people want.
I thank all Nigerians who have made this
day possible. Our country has now joined
the community of nations that have used
the ballot box to peacefully change an
incumbent President in a free and fair
election. To me this is indeed historic.
Most people will welcome the result
because it is the one they voted for.
Others will naturally be disappointed. I
ask that we all be circumspect, respectful
and peaceful in these times.
This was a hard- fought contest.
Emotions are high. We must not allow
them to get the better of us. This is not
the time for confrontation. This is a
moment that we must begin to heal the
wounds and work toward a better future.
We do this first by extending a hand of
friendship and conciliation across the
political divide. We hope and pray our
friends in other parties reciprocate.
I thank all the members of the All
Progressives Congress, APC, for their
commitment and their hard work through
the formation of the party, the campaigns
and the Presidential elections. Let me
equally extend my appreciation to the
MEDIA, Civil Society and the Security
agencies for their selfless service.
The International press and our friends
abroad deserve special commendation for
their support throughout the process. We
promise a robust and dynamic
engagement with your countries in
matters of mutual interest to nations.
In the interim, I call on all Nigerians to be
law abiding and peaceful. The eyes of the
world were focused on us to see if we
could vote in a peaceful way and carry
out a representative election in an orderly
manner. You have proven to the world
that we are a people who have embraced
democracy and a people who seek a of
government by, for and of the people.
We have put one party state behind us.
You have voted for a party and president
that will serve and govern but never rule
over you. Change has come. A new day
and a new Nigeria are upon us. The
victory is yours and the glory is that of
our nation – Nigeria
I will make a more formal address to the
nation tomorrow after receiving the
certificate of return from INEC.
May God Bless the Federal Republic of
Nigeria.

3. The social media that provide the means fo u and me to contribute.
4. The Nigerian who crave fo change never mind the religion, ethnicity but feel its time we get it right.

PoliticsGod Of Febuhari Is Also God Of March By Femi Adesina by smsshola(op): 2:56am On Mar 27, 2015
Since he emerged on the national scene in
January 1984, I have been a supporter of
Gen Muhammadu Buhari. Why? His
lifestyle just resonates with what I love:
simplicity, discipline, probity, accountability,
passion for motherland, and many others.
Am I saying he’s a saint? No. Every
human being has shortcomings, and we are
not looking for an angel to come and rule
us. That is not the divine order of things.
Win or lose tomorrow in the presidential
election, I remain a Muhammadu Buhari
man. That Spartan lifestyle he has chosen
for himself is the stuff of great leaders,
legends, who build nations, and turn round
the fortunes of countries.
When the election was to originally hold on
February 14, before a postponement of six
weeks was stuffed down our throats, some
people had creatively expressed their love
for Buhari as FeBuhari. The poll was to
hold on February 14, known globally as
Lovers’ Day, and it was a day to express
love for a man who could change our
country. FeBuhari 14 was thus the chant
that filled the air.
That mantra sent dread running down the
spine of anti-Buharists, however. They saw
that the people were poised to effect a
change in the leadership of the country.
The momentum was highly in favour of that
simple, self-effacing, unobtrusive man from
Daura. So, what did they do? Hiding under
the smokescreen of insecurity, they
postponed the elections by six weeks.
Last week, founder of the Oodua Peoples
Congress (OPC), Dr Frederick Fasehun,
confessed that he was one of those who
pressed and pressured for a shift, because
Buhari would have won the election. And
he would rather die than see a Buhari
victory.
Now, the six weeks are over, and Nigerians
are on the march again. The new chant is
MarchforBuhari. Some people even say
PVC means ‘Please Vote Change,’ instead
of Permanent Voters’ Card. And tomorrow,
they are resolved to vote for change, while
the supporters of President Goodluck
Jonathan will vote for continuity and
transformation. Who wins? The normal life
of a pregnancy is nine months. Childbirth
is here. The expectant mother is in labour
pains. Her water bag has burst, and the
baby will soon pop out.
Fasehun’s confession of working for
postponement reminded me of an account
in the Good Book, as told in I Kings Chapter
20. The Syrians, under their king,
Benhadad, had arrayed themselves to fight
Israel. In the first battle, they had lost
woefully, and the king of Syria had been
told: “Their gods are gods of the hills;
therefore they were stronger than we. But
let us fight against them in the plain, and
surely we shall be stronger than they.”
So, Syria attacked Israel in the plain,
believing that their god was helpless in
such terrain. And what happened? Let’s
hear the Good Book again: “And they
pitched one over against the other seven
days. And so it was, that in the seventh
day, the battle was joined; and the children
of Israel slew of the Syrians an hundred
thousand footmen in one day.”
The Syrians were beaten black and blue
again. And what is the moral of the story?
The God of the mountains is also the God
of the valleys. The God of FeBuhari is also
the God of March. MarchforBuhari . If He
had ordained Muhammadu Buhari to win in
February, not six weeks, six months, or six
years can change it. His will is immutable.
Constant. Enduring. Sacrosanct. The
truth is that if God has ordained Buhari to
be President from May 29, 2015, nothing
can change it. And if Goodluck Jonathan is
the chosen one, nothing also will change it.
God is sovereign, and as human beings, we
can only pray. And you know what my
prayers have been? That God will give us a
change of direction in Nigeria. Change
from the road to perdition! Change from
bribery and corruption. Change from
mindless looting of the treasury! Change
from bombings and insecurity. Change
from bile and hate! And the man that can
effect that change, in my estimation, is
Muhammadu Buhari.
Between when the elections were
postponed by six weeks, and now, what
has changed? Well, the security situation in
the Northeast is better. Boko Haram has
been routed to a large extent by the
military. The Independent National
Electoral Commission (INEC) is also better
prepared. Many more millions of Nigerians
have secured their PVCs. But will the
change redound to Jonathan’s favour?
People are asking questions, particularly on
the victories over Boko Haram. If this could
be achieved in six weeks, why did we have
to wait for six years, with almost 20,000
people dead? Did the government leave the
insurgency issue as a political trump card?
That is a big question. But if the answer is
in the affirmative, then it is unconscionable,
even amoral. Almost 20,000 souls dead,
just to gain political advantage? I choose
not to believe it, for my own peace of mind.
Another thing that has changed in six
weeks is that it has enabled Jonathan to
launch an onslaught on the Southwest, the
swing region of the election. Since after
the postponement, the President virtually
relocated to the Southwest, meeting with
nearly all the stakeholders – traditional
rulers, opinion leaders, leaders of militia
groups, religious leaders, youths,
entertainers, everybody. And many reports
say the President did not come empty-
handed, and that many of those he met
went away happy, very happy (you know
what I’m labouring to say). Well, will that
translate to votes tomorrow from the
Southwest? We wait. Despite the
visitations, and the ‘happiness’ spread
round, do the people of the region now
have better supply of electricity? Do they
have their share of the estimated 40 million
unemployed youths in the country now
gainfully engaged? Has the pervading
poverty vanished? Is the public treasury
now safer from pillage? Is the region more
secure, and as Boko Haram begins to hit
soft targets with bombs, is there an
assurance that they won’t come one day
into Lagos, Ibadan, Ogbomoso, Oyo or Ile-
Ife? What has really changed to swing the
position from what obtained in February?
Tomorrow will show. When an improvident
person owes you, and he promises to pay
at the end of the month, that time will
surely come. The month has now ended;
the six weeks window is closed. And he
that will come will come, and will not
delay. Is it Buhari? Is it Jonathan? The
vision will no longer tarry.
Earlier this week, Lee Kuan Yew, the man
who took Singapore from zero to hero, from
third world to first world, passed away. He
had ruled his country for 31 years, and
turned the country right side up. But it was
not a tea party. While it lasted, his people
called him all sorts of names. Despot was
one of the prominent epithets they gave
him. But by sheer grit and single-
mindedness, he achieved his goals.
Singapore is a haven of discipline, peace
and prosperity today. The people are
happier, and in death, Lee Kuan Yew is
described in superlatives. That was where
Buhari was taking Nigeria to as a military
leader. But Nigerians could not stand it,
and screamed from the rooftops. Ibrahim
Babangida came, and torpedoed the
process. And Nigeria is where she is
today. Cabined, cribbed, consigned to
pedestrianism and humdrum!
Buhari is back again. For the fourth time,
he wants to take Nigeria to her rightful
place in the comity of nations. From the
despot people called him 32 years ago, he
has transformed into the country’s most
colourful politician. He draws the largest
unsolicited, un-induced crowed round the
country. When would we have such again
in future? It would surely take time. But
would Nigerians make the best of this
opportunity? Would they lay aside
ethnicity, religious bigotry, and all other
sentiments that easily beset them, and vote
in a man who can avert the country’s
descent into social, economic and political
perdition?
“As far as I am concerned, four short
phrases summarize my overall impression
and opinion of Buhari. An incorruptible
man! A patriotic Nigerian devoid of any
trace of ethnicism and parochialism! A
deeply religious man. Above all a stern
disciplinarian.” (Ambassador Ignatius
Olisemeka).
“He is committed to fight corruption and
compulsive stealing. He is committed to
fight insurgency and can handle it better.
He cares about ordinary Nigerians and will
serve them whole-heartedly. He is
supported by many prominent, objective
Nigerians, international objective media, and
the civilized world! He is dreaded by many
that have looted Nigeria dry.” (Chief
Festus Odimegwu, former chairman,
National Population Commission).
“The man is so straightforward. This is a
man who was Minister of Petroleum. He
doesn’t have oil block; he doesn’t even
have a filling station. We have been
shouting about corruption for a long time
and people will tell you corruption has
always been there; but this is the best
opportunity we have to change things.”
(Hon Juventus Ojukwu).
You find this type of comments from all
parts of the country. Will it translate to
victory for Buhari tomorrow? I pray it does
– for the sake of this fast vanishing
country. A blessed but badly blighted land!
I have two songs ready for Sunday,
Monday, or whatever day the result of the
election comes. If Jonathan wins, I’ll
declare:
Who has the final say?
Jehovah has the final say
Jehovah turns my life around (2ce)
He makes a way where there’s no way,
Jehovah has the final say
But if Buhari wins, I’ll open a bottle of fruit
wine with a resounding pop, do a jig, then a
waltz, and sing:
I can see everything turning around
Turning around
Turning around for my good
And for the good of Nigeria, our own dear
native land.
Whatever way it goes, however, we remain
Nigerians. Though tribe and tongues may
differ, in brotherhood we stand. Our
country should not die just because we held
elections.

PoliticsI Have Packed A Small Bag,ready For Arrest - Tinubu by smsshola(op): 2:35pm On Mar 26, 2015
APC’s national leader,Asiwaju Bola
Tinubu, has said he has packed his bags
and is ready for arrest .
Tinubu whose birthday falls on Sunday
March 29th was speaking at the 7th
edition of the Bola Tinubu Colloquium in
Lagos on Wednesday ..He said
“(There are) all kinds
of threats and reports
that they are ready to
arrest APC leaders;
they are busy making
sinister plans instead of
leading the nation; this
nation is not for sale, it
is for change; positive
change that we can
believe.
“For me, personally, I
have packed a small
bag. They may arrest
me and others, but they
cannot arrest an idea
whose time has come.
The time for a
common-sense
revolution has come.
So, Nigeria, in calling
for a common-sense
revolution, I do not
advocate violence; I
abhor it.
“What we seek is a
revolution to use our
votes to throw out
ineffective leaders and
we shall do it. It is a
demand for a true
electoral democracy
and the responsive
leadership associated
with it. The revolution
is not a violent one to
tear things down. It is
a positive one with our
fingers to repair and
restructure a nation
when we vote.”

PoliticsWhat to expect after March 28…By Simon Kolawole by smsshola(op): 6:34am On Mar 22, 2015
Here we go again: another presidential election
is upon us. The season of fear. The season of
war and rumours of war. We've been lectured
that this is not just another election; this is THE
election. According to some foreign "Nigeria
experts", it is the election that will lead to the
end of our beloved country as we currently know
it. Nigeria is about to disintegrate, they say.
Even if these exaggerations have been taken too
far, I have to admit that this is probably the
most tension-soaked presidential election in
Nigeria's history. The hot air being generated by
the combatants is rapidly depleting the ozone
layer and causing significant climate change in
the political sphere.
My gut feeling, though, is that the election will
come and go and Nigeria will not go to war.
There will certainly be protests and
demonstrations, no matter who wins. That is
why we are Nigerians: we hardly accept that we
have been fairly beaten. There will always be
conspiracy theories and allegations of real and
imagined manipulation. That is one sure thing
we should expect after March 28. The signals are
there already: some people have "discovered"
plans to rig in favour of the Peoples Democratic
Party (PDP) or the All Progressives Congress
(APC). So expect a lot of accusations and
counter-accusations — and more hot air.
Let's start with the PDP. If the APC should win
this election, there can only be one scapegoat:
Professor Attahiru Jega, chairman of the
Independent National Electoral Commission
(INEC). From celebrating Jega as the poster boy
of President Goodluck Jonathan's commitment
to credible elections as recently as August 2014,
the PDP now treats the INEC chairman with
absolute suspicion. The PDP that showed off
Jega as a fair-minded referee, despite overseeing
the ruling party's defeats in Edo, Anambra, Ondo
and Osun governorship polls, is suddenly casting
him as a northerner working vigorously to install
Gen. Muhammadu Buhari, a fellow northerner, as
president. Nigeria!
The biggest complaint from the PDP guys will be
that Jega took advantage of the free hand given
to him by Jonathan to manipulate the electoral
process in favour of the APC. Trouble started
with the creation of additional polling units which
allegedly favoured opposition's strongholds.
Then came the issue of collection of the
permanent voter cards (PVCs) which the ruling
party believes heavily favoured APC-controlled
areas. They questioned the high figures in war
zones and the low figures in many states in the
south-east and south-south. There is also the
raging battle over the use of smart card readers
for voter accreditation. You see, the PDP has
readymade excuses if it fails to win.
As for the APC guys, what can I say? An election
is only free and fair when they win. When they
don't win, it is because of PDP's rigging
machinery. That one is settled. Their complaints
will start from APC's "advantage" in opinion
polls and on the social media. The recent Israeli
election is not a good reminder, though. Much
like the APC, the opposition Zionist Union was
favoured by opinion polls, social media and the
US government. But the results showed
otherwise. Likud party still retained its majority.
The Zionist Union accepted defeat. Of course,
Nigeria is not like Israel in terms of transparency
of elections, but I'm just saying...
APC is likely to complain about everything —
deployment of soldiers, "jamming" of smart card
readers and "stomach infrastructure" — but they
are unlikely to complain about Jega. Incredibly,
Jega is now the darling of APC. On November
27, 2013 while delivering the annual lecture of
the Freelance and Independent Broadcasters
Association of Nigeria (FIBAN), in Abeokuta,
Alhaji Lai Mohammed, APC spokesman,
specifically said Jega was not competent to
conduct the 2015 polls. He spoke after his party
lost in Anambra. But in 2015, he says Jega must
not be removed. He even discovered plans by the
PDP to deposit huge sums in Jega's account to
set up him. Nigeria!
In fact, the Congress for Progressive Change
(CPC, now part of APC) alleged in 2011 that
Jega installed a software on INEC computers
that was deducting a certain percentage of
Buhari's votes. This was one of the grounds it
pleaded in its litigation. Isn't it very interesting
that Jega's biggest admirers are now to be
found in APC? What changed? Also, isn't it
amusing that the PDP no longer celebrates
Jega? What changed? I am praying fervently that
one day, I will begin to trust Nigerian politicians.
It is so difficult for me. I have seen through
them —whether they are in APGA, APC, PDP or
whichever party. I am never deceived by their
public posturing. It is all politics!
Meanwhile, I will make one more prediction and
then I will be done: do not expect any
presidential candidate to congratulate the other
for winning the March 28 election. It has
happened only once in our history. In 1993,
when the results of the June 12 election came in
and Bashorun MKO Abiola, candidate of the
Social Democratic Party (SDP) had clearly won,
Alhaji Bashir Othman Tofa, who flew the flag of
the National Republican Convention (NRC),
promptly congratulated him. It was very
unNigerian. And because it was unNigerian, Tofa
had to withdraw his congratulations as NRC
started making the claim that it actually won the
election. Now that is very Nigerian.
Dr. Kayode Fayemi was also unNigerian last
year. After Mr. Ayo Fayose was declared winner
of the Ekiti governorship election, Fayemi
congratulated him! I was close to tears. In
Nigeria? What is happening to us? But the day
after, we broke the story at TheCable that APC
was heading for the tribunal. A top APC member,
who is now a governorship candidate, called me
and said: "Simon, you guys got your story
wrong." But APC soon headed for the tribunal.
Fayemi was castigated for being "hasty" in
making a concession. Sadly, recent allegations
on the role soldiers played in the election,
published by Sahara Reporters, have now put a
big question mark on that poll's credibility.
Nonetheless, it is very rare for a Nigerian to
accept defeat. But in my dreams, I see Jonathan
— if he loses — picking up the phone and
congratulating Buhari. "Congratulations, General,
for a well-deserved victory," he says. "I am ready
to work with you to ensure a smooth transition. I
pray that your tenure will bring prosperity to
Nigerians." Dr. Reuben Abati, presidential
spokesman, promptly issues a statement
congratulating the APC for its victory. "Nigerians
have spoken and the president respects their
wishes," he writes. "This election will remain a
landmark not just in our history but in the annals
of African politics for its credibility and novelty."
And in my dreams, I see Buhari — if he loses —
congratulating Jonathan. "I fully accept the
outcome and congratulate you. I sincerely hope
that you will use your second term to heal
national wounds and tackle corruption and
insecurity squarely. Accept the assurance of my
best wishes," Buhari tells Jonathan on phone.
Mohammed, the APC spokesman, immediately
issues a statement congratulating the PDP,
maintaining that only a battle has been lost but
the war is still on. "We fought a good fight, but
while we have lost the battle, be sure that in
2019 you will have no hiding place. Nigerians
want real change not promises of change,"
Mohammed says.
Fellow Nigerians, pardon my stupidity. It is just
that I'm obsessed with unNigerian dreams. I will
wake up to reality to one day, I promise.
ROLL CALL
In the 1959 general election which ushered
Nigeria into Independence, there were 9 million
registered voters. The country had a population
of 36 million then. Some 7.6 million turned out
to vote at 25,000 polling units across the
federation. Contrast with 2015: Nigeria now has
a projected population of 170 million and 68
million registered voters. Voting will take place
on Saturday at approximately 120,000 polling
units all over Nigeria. Remarkably, there were
73.5 million registered voters four years ago, so
this year’s figure is 5 million lower — apparently
because of the biometric verification that
effectively eliminated double registration.
Technology.
LARGEST TURN-OUT
The 79.9% turn-out in the 1959 elections
remains the highest, percentage wise. We don't
know why. Perhaps, it was because Nigerians
were excited by Independence. There was
massive awareness. There was real competition
for votes among the parties. The second largest
turn-out was in 2003 when 69% of the 60.8
million registered voters turned out in an election
that gave President Obasanjo his second term
after "defeating" Gen. Muhammadu Buhari.
However, that election was generously rigged,
with the figures merely written in most Southern
states. There was a new style of rigging via
"Form EC 8A" (the result sheets). Innovative.
LOWEST TURN-OUT
Guess the election that witnessed the lowest
turn-out? 1964? 1979? 1993? Yes, in that order.
From the height of 79.9% in 1959, the 1964 poll
hit rock bottom with 33%. The election was
boycotted by a coalition of opposition parties
demanding postponement. The boycott was total
in the east and partial in the west, where
violence eventually broke out. In 1979, only 34%
of the 48.6 million registered voters turned up
despite the landmark return to democracy after
13 years of military rule. The third lowest,
ironically, was in the famous June 12, 1993 poll
when only 36% voted. Dwindling.
THE PARLIAMENT
You are hereby forgiven for thinking only the
presidential election will hold on March 28.
Actually, we would also be electing 109 senators
and 360 members of House of Representatives.
In 1959, there were 312 parliamentary seats. The
Northern Peoples Congress (NPC) won 134,
mostly in the north; the National Council of
Nigerian Citizens (NCNC) 81, mostly in the east;
and Action Group (AG) 73, mostly in the west.
Interestingly, NCNC scored the highest number of
popular votes (2.59m), followed by AG (1.99m)
and NPC (1.92m) — but the distribution of
constituencies gave the north more seats in the
parliament. Territorial.
