Chelsea captain John Terry has made a miraculous recovery from the ankle injury he sustained in the Champions League draw at FC Porto and will play in the Carling Cup Final against Arsenal.

The 26-year-old England captain was injured during training ahead of the 1-1 draw against Mourinho's former club on Wednesday evening and then lasted just 14 minutes of the game before being carried off on a stretcher.

Chelsea doctor Bryan English told the club's official website: "He was placed in a boot with crutches as we needed to ascertain the exact extent of the damage to the ankle. This was done the following day with the aid of an MRI scan.

"On Thursday he started walking and he was treated at the training ground. On Friday I was of the impression that this injury would still take five more days to recover and so informed Jose Mourinho that John would not be available for selection for the Carling Cup Final.

"But on Saturday John felt a big improvement in his ankle and requested that the medical department performed a fitness test. On passing this test he was put into a full training session and was able to train fully.

"This rate of recovery has surprised the medical department. I have apologised to Jose for providing him with misleading information that led to his statements in relation to John Terry's injury on Friday."

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has bitten back at Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho's dig at his lack of success in the Champions League.

Wenger guided the Gunners to the final last season, but saw his charges lose 2-1 to Barcelona, with Mourinho seeming to poke fun at the Frenchman.

The Portuguese said earlier in the week: "If you judge me and I don't win the Champions League, you have to judge every coach in the Champions League who has never won it, because I did it once.

"Many great managers in the world have never done it. We have a big example, not far from us. Arsene Wenger is a top manager in the world.

"He is a big manager in the world of football and he had never done it."

However, Wenger responded ahead of the Carling Cup final by saying: "Plenty of managers have won the Champions League who will not be considered great managers.

"What is important is that you look at their careers in ten, 15 or 20 years. What kind of quality have you brought through in your work and on how consistent a level have you done it?


"We played a whole season unbeaten in 2004-05, but you did not see me jumping on the tables every week. Winning the Champions League will not change my life."
