Some People say it will not be easy to rig elections in 2011 as Nigerians are now wiser. We will all be there to count the vote and with our mobile phones will capture and share proceedings with the rest of the world. Even if they manage to rig, there will be so much evidence that the era of throwing out election cases on the bases of lack of evidence is over. IN your Honest opinion, Can we really have a free and fai election in this country? It will be great we share our views, |

A woman, Oluremi Bolaji, 32, held residents of Ijeshatedo, Surulere and its environs spell bound when she mysteriously appeared on the minaret of the Ijesha Central Mosque in Lagos. Residents of the area had woken up to see the woman perched dangerously atop the minaret which is under construction as part of ongoing renovation works on the three-storey mosque. The scene of the incident became a Mecca of sort as residents from the neigbouring communities gathered to witness the incident. Many of the onlookers expressed surprise at how Bolaji managed to climb the mosque tower even as they wondered how the mother of three would be rescued safely. Meanwhile, there were different sides to the Bolaji saga. While some people claimed she was a witch on a failed mission, and reaping the fruits of her wickedness, others said she was mentally deranged, a claim corroborated by Bolaji’s father. According to Bolaji’s father who wept openly at his daughter’s risky situation, the victim was mentally ill and the family had been making plans to move her to a psychiatrist home for treatment before the incident. Amid the confusion over how to rescue Bolaji safely from her precarious position, a commercial tricyclist, simply identified as Ikechukwu, offered to bring the lady down if his colleagues would compensate him with the sum of N1, 000. There was another angle to the Ikechukwu story, as another account said he had actually placed a bet with some other young men at the scene that he could bring down the woman. The wager was put at N1,000.00. Ikechukwu, after getting the assurance that he would be given the money began to climb the minaret. Unaware that he was embarking on a dangerous mission, Ikechukwu never returned to claim the money he was promised. He was allegedly pushed down by Bolaji using one of the wooden beams the construction workers had placed in the minaret. He landed, hitting his head on the concrete floor. He died instantly. Following Ikechukwu’s fatal fall, Bolaji was said to have boasted that she would kill more people should they venture to bring her down. However, the Imam in charge of the mosque, Ganiyu Oyebanjo, was said to have contacted the policemen and men of the State Fire Service. Daily Sun gathered that before the arrival of the crime fighters, a native doctor was said to have made a futile attempt to rescue Bolaji. The medicine man was said to have recited some incantations, cast spell but to no avail. He was reportedly chased away by the crowd. Men of the state fire service on their arrival splashed water on the victim hoping it would scare her, yet she remained adamant. When Daily Sun arrived the scene Bolaji was seen entertaining her audience. Repeatedly, she would remove her clothes dance around while the malefolk applauded her. When it was obvious that the woman just had to be saved from possible death, able-bodied men comprising mainly of members of the Oodua Peoples Congress (OPC), took over the rescue mission. They beckoned on her to come down, while she shouted in Yoruba language that they should leave her alone. She began throwing stones at the men who for safety had to wear helmet. Gradually the men climbed up the tower, distracted the lady while another with the aid of a plank pushed her from the minaret to the roof of the mosque. She was eventually brought down from the roof. The mob attempted to lynch Bolaji but for the quick intervention of the police. She was whisked to Ijesha police station and later moved to a private hospital where she is receiving treatment. Her father lamented that things would not have degenerated to this if his daughter had not been turned back by Yaba Psychiatric hospital. According to him, the hospital had asked that the family should first treat the wounds Oluremi had inflicted on herself before bringing her for admission. The angry mob took to the street, protesting the death of Ikechukwu and calling for the heads of the woman and members of her entire family. The mob barricaded Ijesha Lawanson Road, disrupting commercial activities and vehicular movements. Some hoodlums who hijacked the protest used the opportunity to snatch peoples mobile phones and handbags. The police eventually dispersed the protesters by firing tear gas canisters. The Imam, Ganiyu Oyebanjo, expressed shock on how the woman managed to climb the minaret. “I think she was being controlled by a demonic force. She climbed the minaret at about midnight and was brought down around 11:00 am.” He alleged that worshippers had prevailed on the deceased, Ikechukwu, to wait for the arrival of policemen and the fire fighters but he was adamant, probably because of the N1, 000, allegedly promised him by his colleagues. Lagos State police spokesman, Mr. Frank Mba, who confirmed the death of Ikechukwu, said the quick intervention of the police saved the lady from being stoned to death by the mob. He said both the police and fire fighters rushed the woman in an ambulance to the police before taking her to the hospital. He said the body of Ikechukwu had been taken by his family for burial. Mba advised members of the public to always report such incidents to the police rather than resort to jungle justice. http://www.sunnewsonline.com/webpages/news/national/2011/jan/28/national-28-01-2011-003.htm

I've written many times about the many ways that marriage has gotten a bad reputation. Whether it's stories about celebrities caught in cheating scandals, or watching the couples around them filing for divorce, many people are questioning just how desirable it is to be married. So forget about the bleak statistics for modern day marriage, today's post will strictly take a light examine several of the negative terms that are used to describe various aspects of marriage. Wedlock- Maybe it's because it sounds so similar to headlock or maybe it's just the inclusion of the word "lock" that makes this term sound so unappealing. Either way, it sounds likes something that is meant to trap you against your will, and does not conjure up happy images. Tying the Knot- I've read varying accounts of how this expression came to refer to marriage and most have to do with stories about wedding ceremonies where the bride and groom would be tied together to symbolize being "bound together." Most people don't relish in the idea of marriage being the equivalent of a physical restriction. When people talk about "being tied down" by marriage, it is certainly not meant to express their happiness with marriage. I did find one romantic legend regarding this term that tells a tale of sailors proposing be sending their sweetheart a length of rope and knowing that the proposal was accepted if the rope was return to them with a knot tied in it. Despite that sweet tale, knots are more often used to describe a situation that involves a tangle or a hindrance, rather than the more romantic notion of two things being intertwined as one. Institution of Marriage- Most people don't view the word "institution" in a very favorable way. School, prison and mental hospitals some of the most common places that are referred to as institutions, and we tend to view them as places that are mandatory under certain circumstances, not something that we would freely choose. Marriage License- Yes, this little piece of paper makes it official that you are married in the eyes of the law. Many states have started to refer to this document as a marriage certificate, and that really isn't surprising. There is something about a certificate that we associate with achievement, while there is something about obtaining a license that we associate with standing in long lines and perhaps taking a test. Obtaining any type of license is not usually something that we get all excited about. Bridegroom- For centuries this was the official term for a man about to be married, but for the most part this term has been replaced with the word "groom." This isn't surprising, because bridegroom sounds eerily like a man has gone from being a man to being a strange hybrid that is part bride and part groom. Marriage is a merging in many ways, but most men don't want to feel that they have gone from being a man to being part man and part woman. So there you have some of the most common negative terms that are associated with marriage, courtesy of our own research and suggestion from our loyal Twitter followers. Marriage has changed in many ways since the days when women wore corsets and a proper gentleman didn't go out in public without a hat. The terms that we associate with marriage could also use a little updating, especially when it comes to giving marriage a positive sound. It would nice to have more words that make marriage sound like something that should be celebrated rather than words that make it sound like a punishment. What do you think? What are your thoughts about these terms? Any terms you'd like to add? Please share your thoughts |
i still dont think they will win GET, for some reasons, GET isnt the best solution for Nigeria. And if AC,CPC and APGA merges, they will need to produce a better leader who will lead us to the promise land. Buhari might not be the best option for this country at this point in time. We need leaders with the Fear of God. Because when the fear of God is there, it would be impossible to hurt the person next to U. God BLess this great Country Naija! |
