Jupp Heynckes is set to give starts to Luiz Gustavo and Xherdan Shaqiri against the Gunners, while Arjen Robben (calf) is a doubt after sitting out Saturday's match. Arsene Wenger is set to name the strongest side possible having not had a fixture since March 3 but Nacho Monreal is again unavailable, meaning that Thomas Vermaelen will deputise at left-back. The second leg may prove too soon for Bacary Sagna (knee) so Carl Jenkinson is likely to start, while Abou Diaby (calf) could return to the bench after sitting out the north London derby. Reports emerged on Monday night that Jack Wilshere (ankle) is set to miss the game and potentially the rest of the season. ![]()

The Real Madrid star will check in on his old house before the Champions League tie, while his side are preparing to travel to England a day earlier than scheduled for the match. The Portuguese forward, who moved to the Spanish giants from United in an £80 million deal in 2009, plans to visit the £3m Alderley Edge home which he still owns from his six years with Sir Alex Ferguson’s side. The 28-year-old is set for an emotional return to his former club and will prepare for the game by catching up with old friends and checking in on his old house, which he failed to sell for £4m when he left United four years ago. The Alderley Edge home, a popular location for players at both United and rivals Manchester City, was previously rented out to Adam Johnson for £12,000-a-week until the winger was sold by City to Sunderland last summer. United supporters should not get too excited about the mansion representing a possible return to the club as it is just one item in an impressive property portfolio built up by Ronaldo throughout the world.

Manchester United midfielder Ryan Giggs has signed a new one-year contract which will see him enter his 23rd senior season with the club. The 39-year-old penned his first professional deal with the Red Devils in 1990 and has since made a club-record 931 appearances whilst winning 12 Premier League titles, four FA Cups and two Champions League titles. But the winger is not done yet, and insists he is excited by the prospect of adding to his already impressive honours list this season. The Welshman told the club's official website: “I am feeling good, enjoying my football more than ever and, most importantly, I feel I am making a contribution to the team. "This is an exciting team to be part of, with great team spirit, and we are again pushing for trophies as we head towards the business end of the season. "I am delighted to have signed a new contract. I would like to thank Sir Alex and the coaching staff and I would also like to thank David Gill who has been a tremendous support over my many years here." United boss Sir Alex Ferguson also expressed delight at the news, and suggested Giggs' ability and hunger are "as strong as ever". “What can I say about Ryan that hasn’t already been said? He is a marvellous player and an exceptional human being," the Scot said. "Ryan is an example to us all, the way in which he has, and continues to, look after himself. "He has fantastic energy for the game and it is wonderful to see. Ryan seems to reach a new milestone every week and to think that he now has 23 unbroken years of league goals behind him is truly amazing in the modern-day game. "His form this year shows his ability and his enjoyment of the game are as strong as ever and I am absolutely delighted that he has signed a new contract.”

Theo Walcott has defended Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger, insisting he is the right man to turn the club's season around. The Gunners' wait for a trophy is in danger of extending to eight years after a 3-1 defeat at home to Bayern Munich leaves them virtually out of the Champions League. With the north Londoners also facing a struggle to qualify for next year's competition, something they have done for the past 15 years in a row, the boss has come under heavy scrutiny from pundits and fans alike. However, the former Southampton attacker has urged supporters to stand by the Frenchman, who he is sure will be able to lift the players' moral despite the devastating defeat. "We've got the best man in the job to get our heads back to where they should be," he told reporters. "I've played a lot of games in the Champions League and I know how things go." The Gunners currently sit fifth in the league table, four points behind rivals Tottenham and just two points ahead of Everton, with Liverpool not far behind. The club have never failed to qualify for the competition under Wenger and, while Walcott admits it would be a huge disappointment should they miss out on the tournament, he is focusing on making sure that does not happen. "If you are a top team, and with the saga of not winning anything for such a long time, it's always disappointing if that happens," the 23-year-old continued. "But I don't want to focus on the negativity about that. I just want to focus on the positive side of the team, because I know how good those guys are, and get to where we should be." Toni Kroos' seventh minute goal gave Bayern a perfect start in the last-16 first leg at the Emirates, forcing the hosts to chase the game and leaving them open to the counter-attack - which the German's exploited expertly. And the England international thinks conceding early and avoidable goals is becoming an unwanted habit for Wenger's men, while they must build on a better second half in the away leg. "It's happening most weeks," he added. "We didn't really have a slow start [against Bayern]. It was just sloppy goals – goals that could have been avoidable, I felt. "We knew how strong [Bayern] were going to be. They're very well organised, they did their job, they took their chances which is the most important thing. "We had a few but didn't manage to take it. In the Champions League you need to take limited opportunities, but, like I say [we've] got to take the positives out of the second half. "There's a lot we can learn from that, learn from Bayern as well because we want to be like that

Tottenham star Gareth Bale has credited plenty of training-ground practice for his two excellent free-kicks against Lyon on Thursday. The Welshman added to the set-piece he scored against Newcastle last Sunday with two long-range efforts in the Europa League tie first leg - the first from 35 yards out in first-half injury time and the second coming with the last kick of the game. A delightful strike from Samuel Umtiti was sandwiched between the goals, the youngster hitting the ball first-time from an acute angle, leaving Brad Friedel stranded in goal. "I'm delighted. I've been practising free-kicks on the training ground and I scored one like that last week. Both came at good times in the game," Bale told ITV. "Lyon are a good team and we weren't 100 percent to be honest - we looked a bit tired. "But the most important thing is we got the win. It's going to be hard going over there, but we're taking this competition seriously." Spurs travel to France next week with the advantage, but Umtiti's away goal leaves the tie firmly in the balance.

Ryan Giggs has praised goalkeeper David de Gea after his man-of-the-match display in Manchester United's 1-1 draw with Real Madrid on Wednesday. The former Atletico Madrid shot-stopper returned to his hometown and made a number of key saves in the first leg of the Champions League last-16 tie at the Santiago Bernabeu. "David has had to make some good saves, it's good for him to come back to Madrid and put on a performance like that," Giggs said after the game. "He's a top 'keeper and his shot-stopping is second to none. He showed that tonight. There was a lot of pressure on him coming back to Madrid and he produced the goods. "Usually, if a keeper makes a mistake it's a goal but if a centre-forward misses an open goal they get other chances. But he's produced a great performance tonight." United took the lead through Danny Welbeck's header in the 20th minute before Cristiano Ronaldo equalised with a header of his own against his former club. Giggs believes Sir Alex Ferguson's side showed in Madrid that they have the strength of character to book a place in the quarter-finals, with the return leg at Old Trafford on March 5. "I think it's 50-50 because you've got to recognise the quality they've got," Giggs said. "We’ve got to put pressure on them and put in a good performance, and the crowd will be behind us. "When you come to a place like this, you're going to be under pressure and you're going to be under the cosh. "If you're going to win the Champions League, you have to put on performances like that, defend well and win the ball. Perhaps we could have held on to the ball a little bit better but overall we're quite pleased."

HISTORY REPEATS ITSELF: Ghana 'very down' ahead of bronze medal match. Mali beat Ghana a year ago in Malabo to take third place at the last edition in Equatorial Guinea and Gabon and Saturday's match in Port Elizabeth will go to the side best able to put aside the trauma of missing out on the final again. Mali were given a thrashing by Nigeria in their last-four clash in Durban, conceding three first-half goals before losing 4-1. Ghana lost on post-match penalties to the tournament's surprise package Burkina Faso after a thrilling 1-1 draw in Nelspruit that went to extra time. The defeat added to the heartbreak the Black Stars suffered in South Africa three years ago when they also lost on penalties in the World Cup quarter-finals. "We are definitely down but will psyche ourselves up and make sure we go for the third place," Ghana skipper Gyan said on the eve of the game. Both sides return to the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium after beginning their campaigns in Port Elizabeth. www.NaijaBet.com now Has the greatest odds for the weekend Fixture dont loose out and it is never too late to make your registration just a click of button. ![]()

Nigeria coach Stephen Keshi insists his inexperienced side are yet to reach the heights of the nation's dominant 1994 African champions. Keshi, a player in the team that won the Africa Cup of Nations 19 years ago, guided his side to this year's final with a 4-1 victory over Mali in the semi-finals in Durban on Wednesday. "The 1994 squad took us five years to build. This team is just five weeks old," he said. "We are still growing. If the players think we are there, that is it. "If they think we can't lose a game, it's going to be like this forever, then no. "Sometimes things go up and down. We're still adding and subtracting. "If I see a player that is very good that can provide something tangible for my team I'll bring him in. "I'm still building. But I don't know if I'm going to be building after the tournament because after the final on Sunday I don't know if I'm still going to be in a job or not." Meanwhile, Mali coach Patrice Carteron said it was difficult to come to terms with the loss to Nigeria. "I am proud that after so much hard work with the players we've been able to play well," he said. "Even though we didn't go through to the final, I'm keeping positive and thinking about the positive aspects of the team. "The team has been able to reach the semi-final and that is something that is definitely good." Nigeria will meet Burkina Faso in Sunday's final in Johannesburg.[b] YOU CAN GET ALL LIVE BETS AND STAKES ON www.NaijaBet.com i dey get my Money o

Ivory Coast defender Kolo Toure feels Nigeria are more than capable of winning the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations. The Ivorians had been favourites to lift the trophy, but were eliminated by the Super Eagles in the quarter-finals, and the Manchester City man believes his side's conquerors have the quality it takes to go all the way. Nigerians were stronger. "I am expecting them to win all of their remaining games in the tournament. I mean, they are two steps away from lifting this trophy. "Stephen Keshi is a good coach and he has changed Nigeria into a respectable team. I think he won’t have a problem beating Mali because he was their coach, he understands their culture." Nigeria and Mali play in a semi-final in less than an hour today, while Burkina Faso tackle Ghana later in the day in the other semi. |
Liverpool and Spain goalkeeper Pepe Reina has criticised Real Madrid coach Jose Mourinho's decision to drop Iker Casillas. The Spain international lost his spot between the sticks to Antonio Adan for the matches against Malaga and Real Sociedad earlier this season, but soon won his place back after his understudy was sent off against the Basques. "I don't think relegating players to the bench motivates them. There are other ways of dealing with these things," Reina told Canal Movistar. Casillas subsequently broke his thumb against Valencia, and Reina went on to say that he hoped his international team-mate returns to full fitness as soon as possible. "I have spoken with Iker and I sent him a text message of support when he got injured. I hope he is back with us as soon as possible," he said. "He has to recover soon and make sure he recovers fully. His hands are vital for this job and he must look after them." Casillas is expected to be out of action for two more months due to his hand injury. [b]
