Crime / EFCC: READ How A Nigerian Fraudster, Family Defrauds American Lawyer $370,000 by SojWORLDWIDE(m): 7:09pm On Jul 09
THIS is a mind boggling story of a Nigerian suspected fraudster identified as Chidozie Kingsley and his family allegedly duped an American Lawyer, Nicole Kierulff Sayers with the total sum of $370,000.

The case being executed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC is ongoing at the High Court of Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.

READ How The Deed Was Crafted, Executed And Busted!

"The third Prosecution Witness, PW3, in the ongoing trial of Nwachi Chidozie Kingsley, on Wednesday, July 3, 2024, told justice U.P Kekemeke of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, High Court, Abuja, how the defendant and his entire family allegedly conspired and defrauded her of the sum of $370,000 (Three Hundred and Seventy Thousand United States Dollars).

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, is prosecuting Kingsley on a two-count charge bordering on stealing, obtaining by false pretence and criminal possession of fake documents to the tune of $370,000 (Three Hundred and Seventy thousand United States Dollars).

READ How The Deed Was Crafted, Executed And Busted!

One of the counts against him reads:

“That you, Nwachi Chidozie Kingsley sometime in 2021 in Abuja, within the jurisdiction of the High Court of Federal Capital Territory, Abuja with intent to defraud obtained the total sum of Three Hundred and Seventy Thousand United States Dollars($370,000) from Nicole Kierulff Sayers under the false pretence of being a purported payment to finance a contract with Federal Ministry of Works and Housing with Contract No: RC/FGN/0275AN/20 issued to Nwachi Chidozie Kingsley, a claim which you knew to be false and thereby committed an offence contrary to Section 1(1)(b) of Advance Fee Fraud and Other Fraud Related Offences Act, 2006 and punishable under Section 1(3) of the same Act”.

At the resumed trial on Wednesday, Nicole Kierulff Sayers, an American and lawyer by profession in the State of Oregon, United States, was led in evidence by the prosecution counsel, Fatsuma Muhammad and the witness identified the defendant before the court as the man who sent her messages on Facebook during her birthday.

“I know the defendant, the defendant messaged me on Facebook on my birthday and he said he was a member of the same spiritual organization with me. We engaged in romantic discussions and phrases and we engaged in conversations that escalated into a relationship of a romantic type,” she said.

Sayers further told the court that the defendant asked her for money to finance the award of a contract by the Ministry of Works and Housing, claiming that some men were threatening his life if he didn’t provide money to secure the contract.

“Before we met each other, he had asked me for money about eleven days before, and his reason for asking for the money according to him was for the award of a contract by the Federal Ministry of Works and Housing and alleged that some men were threatening his life, if he did not provide the money to secure the contract.

“He asked me for help, and supplied me with the details of the contract and logo and all the information, I believed that because I was in a vulnerable state and I had developed an emotional connection with him,” she added.

According to her, the defendant told her that if she gave him $15,000 (Fifteen Thousand Dollars), he would repay her within 45days and she believed him, and transferred the money to the defendant, with an instruction to repay her the money.

Narrating how she transferred the money and how she got to meet the family of the defendant, Sayers said;

“I transferred the money using a money transfer app, he received the money and within one week, he asked me to join him in a FaceTime Video with his family. This was his parents' house and his entire family was there, which included his sister Doris Nwachi, Kenneth Nwachi, sister-in-law Loveline, his father Chizom, his mother Victoria and his alleged daughter, Princess, who was then two years old."

Continuing, Sayers said,

“One more uncle of his, who I don't think is a member of the family, I think is Bishop Ekeke, he and his mother's brothers were there. He engaged me in video calls and messages and because of the reputation that I can see from a distance that he had, he is very highly regarded in the Port Harcourt area and I thought that I could trust him, so at the family meeting, each adult member that I met thanked me for saving the defendant’s alleged contract job and so, I didn't realize that the entire family could conspire against one innocent woman as myself."

The witness further told the court that she had sent a total amount of $40,000 (Forty Thousand United States Dollars), even before she came to Nigeria to meet the defendant.

CLICK FOR MORE NEWS UPDATES HERE:  http://www.sojworldnews.com

“Before I came to Nigeria, I sent to him approximately $40,000 (Forty Thousand US Dollars), and we had continued conversation about him paying back knowing that things will change. I arrived in Abuja in late March 2022, and I spent two weeks with the defendant and despite his assurances that he wouldn't leave me alone for extended periods, he left me alone on countless occasions and I stayed at his rented house in Sun City, Abuja. But because I wanted to get my money; I continued the relationship with him. Several months later, he asked for more money, a minimum of 125 transactions.

The reason he gave me fall into several categories such as medical contingencies, surgeries, malaria treatment and other categories, such as supplies on the government contracts because he didn't have the money for the government. He used emotional manipulation and gas lighting."

“The total amount, and to my best estimate, was well over $200,000 (Two Hundred Thousand Dollars), in a period of twelve months, January to December.

On a few occasions, he claimed he attempted to wire me money at one specific time! He produced a document that he claimed was a bank document and that he made an attempt to wire me $10,000 (Ten Thousand Dollars).

“He claimed the bank intercepted it, because he said the bank claimed it was an attempted misappropriation of government funds, so he found himself in jail. He asked me to bail him out and I did, and again he asked me to make provisions for bribes to pay for the criminal case, because he attempted to misappropriate government funds.

“Finally in December, after pleading and begging, and showing him my desperation, he agreed to wire more money to me and asked for the bank details and he said “I will do it tomorrow”.

Few days later, I asked him, did you wire the money to me and he said no. That was when I realized that I will never see a penny from him again,” she stated.

Thereafter, the matter was adjourned till November 7, 2024 for continuation of trial.

Education / Ahmed Ayinla Fabiyi: Cultists Kill Final Year Student Of TASUED During Exam by SojWORLDWIDE(m): 10:13pm On Jul 03
Ogun: Suspected cultists kill TASUED student during examination

A final year student of the Tai Solarin University of Education (TASUED), Ijagun, Ogun State, Ahmed Ayinla Fabiyi has been killed by suspected cultists.

Fabiyi, a student of History and Diplomatic Studies Department, who was seated for his final paper, was dragged out of the examination hall by the cult group.

DAILY POST gathered that the tragic event which occurred around 3 pm on Wednesday, just as the exam was about to commence, was a renewed cult clash between the Eiye and Aiye cult group.

According to a source, the gang disguised themselves as friends who came to surprise Fabiyi for his birthday, and “carried” him out of the hall under the pretence.

DAILY POST gathered that the deceased student was a former students’ leader, under the aegis of Students Union Government (SUG) in the institution.

Confirming the incident, the institution’s Public Relations Officer, Mrs. Ayotunde Odubela, said the gang’s true intentions became apparent only when they began dragging Fabiyi towards a bushy area near the university’s technical workshop where they viciously beat and macheted him.

The student was actually carried out of the examination hall as if they were celebrating because Wednesday was actually his birthday

Everyone thought they were celebrating his birthday until he was dragged to the bushy part of the institution’s technical workshop and attacked.

That was when the school security unit was contacted but by the time they would get to the place of the incident, he has been actually beaten and macheted. So, when they saw the security men coming, they dropped him and left.

“When the security men picked him up, they took him to the school medical center where he was immediately attended to and referred to the General Hospital Ijebu Ode, immediately.

“The General Hospital also referred him to Babcock University Teaching Hospital; unfortunately, he gave up the ghost before he got to the hospital,” she said.

Odubela added that the school has reported the incident to the police.

Spokesman of the Ogun State police, Omolola Odutola, said the command had begun an investigation and launched raids on suspected cultists’ hideouts in the area.

Politics / NIGERIA, A Country Where Governor Is More Powerful Than The President By Adesoj by SojWORLDWIDE(m): 6:21pm On Jun 27
GOVERNORS in Nigeria, no doubt, wielded power either rightly or wrongly in Nigeria since the nation returned to democratic governance in 1999.

Under their state enclave despite the Separation of Powers, the three organs of government, the Legislature, the Executive and the Judiciary that was well spelt out in the Constitution, Governors have been seen deciding who should be the Speaker or Chief Judge in the State.  They only obey and respect the law when it is in their favour.

Who becomes the Speaker is at the prerogative of the governors, if he is to be removed, it lies in the decision of the governor.

17 Deputy Governors have been sacked by their governors in last 25 years of uninterrupted democracy in Nigeria since 1999.

26 Speakers were impeached and replaced with new ones with hand-in-glove mostly influenced by the State Governors.

Former Governor of Rivers State and his successor, Siminalayi Fubara have turned Rivers State into war grounds forgetting the oath of Office they took not to allow their personal interest override their decisions.

What is really going on in Rivers State?

Fubara demolished a section of the State Assembly under the excuse that the building was defective using the minority at the State Assembly to take decision over the majority.

The Governor recently replaced the Chairman of the State Supreme Council of Traditional Ruler’s Council, High Royal Majesty, Eze Sergeant Awuse and appointed Eze Ohna Apara, His Royal Majesty, Eze Chike Worlu Wodo as a replacement to occupy the office of the Chairman of the council.

He did this because Awuse was loyal to Wike, therefore, the state must suffer for this. But how long will this continue?

Both Wike and Fubara's tenures will expire but Rivers State will remain, this, they failed to realize.

It would be recalled that former Coordination Minister of Finance, Mrs Okonjo Iwuala had running battles with the governors over plans to save for the raining days.  They vehemently frustrated the wise initiative of the Minister, part of which Nigerians are paying the bitter price today.

On Enthronement And Dethronement of Monarchs

Many monarchs have been dethroned or enthroned through  questionable circumstances, a recent typical instance was the Emir of Kano saga.

Once the Governor finds out that the monarch does not belong to his caucus, what follows would be dethronement not minding whether due process was followed or not, whether kingmakers appointed the king according to customs and traditions or whether there is peace in the city or not, this is none of their business.
CLICK FOR MORE NEWS UPDATES HERE: http://www.sojworldnews.com/

Many Obas have been dethroned and enthroned even when their cases are still pending in court. Most of them forgot that they became the governor at the mercy of the same court they are trying to disobey.

Intervention of the governors in selection of the monarchs have caused more harm than good. Their actions have desecrated our traditional institutions.

While the Oyo State Governor, Engr. Rotimi Makinde respects the kingmakers and the courts in the appointments of the Obas, the reverse is the case in Osun where some towns are battling with the intervention of the state government in the selection of their monarchs when there are pending cases in court.

Ridiculing of our traditional institution is ongoing in Kano just because two rival personalities are at each others throats, the grass and trees must suffer. The state must be pulled down because of the personal interests of politicians. This is not what they campaigned for. There is a threat by the governor to pull down the Palace of Ado Bayero.

Emir of Sokoto issue is taking the centre stage as I write, there are plans to reduce his powers.

On whose interest?

Governors have created precedences of chaos and enmity for the future generations because whoever takes over from them will dethrone the monarchs and replaced him with their choices like what Fubara did in Rivers State.

Local Government Autonomy

There are three tiers of government as spelt out by the Nigerian Constitution, Federal, States and the Local Governments but that was not to be as far as our governors are concerned.  They have been seen to oppress the Local Governments administrations usurping their constitutional roles including federal allocations, revenue internal generations and other functions as it relates to good governance at the grassroots.

In those days, Local Governments are responsible for rehabilitation of local roads, collection of levies and taxes in their jurisdictions. All these roles have been taken over by our 'almighty' Governors. They hire and fire Chairmen at will.

While all these atrocities are being carried out, our activists turned blind eyes to it, waiting until the Federal Government would sneeze and they will quickly organize protests to counter the federal government actions.

CLICK FOR MORE NEWS UPDATES HERE: http://www.sojworldnews.com/

Questions come to mind;

For how long will our governors continue to wield their executive rascality?
Would heaven not fall if federal government treat it like they treat other arms of government?
Have they forgotten that their executive powers does not exceed two terms of eight years after which they will become ordinary citizens?
Is it not a crime against humanity for a sitting Governor shielding his predecessor from arrest after allegation of looting tax payers money meant for good governance?

One thing is sure, history will remember every elected leaders for what they have the opportunity to do but refused for their own personal interest.

We have had story of two Heads of States of Kano State origin, while one was assassinated on February 13, 1976 in the case of General Murtala Mohammed and Nigerians trooped out protesting, crying and mourning.  The other one, General Sani Abacha died unsung, uncelebrated, instead, people were celebrating his demise.  This was first time in history of Nigeria.

Abacha died on June 8, 1998 no one remembered him and there has not been any monument named after him but Nigerians still remembered Murtala Mohammed every year since February 13, 1976.  Nigerian International Airport was named after him in Lagos.

Will any of our Governors be on the right side of history?

Crime / PHONE Numbers Of All Lagos Police Stations, Area Commands (FULL LIST) by SojWORLDWIDE(m): 3:39pm On Jun 24
The Lagos State Police Command has taken a significant step towards enhancing public engagement and emergency response by introducing dedicated phone lines for Divisional Police Officers (DPOs) and other key officers.

The State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, announced the move in a press statement released on Saturday.

The new initiative is designed to replace the previous system in which public interactions were conducted through Police Officers’ personal phone numbers.

The statement reads,

“The Lagos State Police Command, in a remarkable move to provide a more stable channel of communication between the public and the Police, the Command has acquired hundreds of telephone lines to be permanently assigned to the offices of Divisional Police Officers (DPOs) and other strategic officers.

“This move phases out the old era where the personal phone numbers of these strategic officers are used for official communication/assignments, resulting in communication barrier whenever these officers are redeployed.

“With the new arrangement, numbers remain permanently attached to particular offices such that with the redeployment of the occupants of such officers, the phone numbers remain the same.”

According to the statement, the State Commissioner of Police, Adegoke Fayoade, introduced the dedicated phone lines for Police Stations and Area Commands to enhance communication, response times, and access to Police Services for the people of Lagos State.

Fayoade praised the Police Community Relations Committee for donating desktop phones to all Police Divisions in Lagos State, supporting the new phone line initiative. He noted that the collaboration will enhance community engagement and contribute to a safer Lagos.

Politics / TINUBU Goes Tough Against Workers Collecting Salaries After Relocating Abroad by SojWORLDWIDE(m): 12:42pm On Jun 24
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has said Civil Servants who relocated abroad and still collecting their monthly salaries will have to do restitutions by returning all they have fraudulently collected.

The President who was represented by the Secretary of the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume delivered the message at the 2024 Civil Service Award and Gala Night, the climax of the week-long 2024 Civil Service Week.

The President said he was struck by the revelations of the fraud revealed by the Head of Service, Dr. Folasade Yemi-Esan in her reform of the Civil Service.

Tinubu added that the supervisors of the erring workers "aiding and abetting the fraud under their watch" will be sanctioned.

"During my recent visit to South Africa, I kept abreast of the week's activities. I was particularly struck by the revelations the Head of the Civil Service shared regarding employees who had relocated abroad while drawing salaries without formally resigning.

It is heartening to hear that measures have been taken to address this issue, but we must ensure those responsible are held accountable and restitution is made.

The culprits must be made to refund the money they have fraudulently collected. Their supervisors and department heads must also be punished for aiding and abetting the fraud under their watch.

The Nigerian Civil Service cannot just be a workplace where ‘anything is possible,’ where workers violate rules without the fear of punishment or repercussion. The civil service of any nation is too important for such misconduct to take root or be tolerated.

The Civil Service is the bedrock, the engine, the locomotive of government, which is necessary for the government to deliver public goods to citizens. As politicians, we are no more than drivers of the locomotives that you provide.

Those who say that a nation is as good as its civil service are close to the truth. You are the real establishment that remains to pilot government affairs as we politicians come and go."

Religion / Inside Life: How American Couple Dies In Mecca (full Details) by SojWORLDWIDE(m): 8:25pm On Jun 23
TRAGEDY as couple identified as Isatu Tejan Wurie, 65, and father Alieu Dausy Wurie, 71 died while performing their obligations at the yearly pilgrimage in Mecca.

The Daughter of the couple, Saida Wurie said her parents  ‘saved their entire lives to embark on this journey,’

She added that it was their lifelong dream to participate in Hajj, the religious pilgrimage that brings Muslims from around the world to Saudi Arabia each year.

They’d spent $23,000 on an all-inclusive travel package through a tour company registered in the state of Maryland.

“They saved their whole lives for this,” she told CNN’s Fredricka Whitfield.

But what was supposed to be the trip of a lifetime turned tragic this week, when Wurie learned that her mother Isatu Tejan Wurie, 65, and father Alieu Dausy Wurie, 71, were among the hundreds of pilgrims who have died during the extreme temperatures that have gripped the Persian Gulf country. More than 500 have been confirmed dead while there are fears that number is well above a thousand.

The Wuries were American citizens from Bowie, Maryland. Mrs. Wurie had recently retired as a head nurse at Kaiser Permanente in Prince George’s County, her daughter told CNN.

Speaking to CNN’s Whitfield on Saturday, Wurie said she had been in close contact with her parents while they were in Saudi Arabia via a family group chat. It was in that chat, she said, that she learned that the tour company did not provide the proper transportation or credentials needed to participate in the pilgrimage.

The group her parents were traveling with, which included up to 100 fellow pilgrims, lacked sufficient food and supplies for the five-to-six-day journey that is a pillar of Islam, she said.

Wurie believes her parents were not “properly prepared” for the trip by the tour operator and “did not receive what they paid for” from the company. CNN has reached out to the tour company for comment.

She last heard from her parents on Saturday, June 15, when her mother messaged that they had already been waiting for transportation for hours to take them to Mount Arafat. She believes they were located in Mina at the time. The couple ultimately opted to walk instead and sent a message to their daughter after they had been walking for over two hours.

The couple then joined fellow pilgrims and others in their tour group on Mount Arafat, where they were gathering to pray and reflect on the holy site. A man on their tour group contacted Saida Wurie to say that her parents had gone missing on Mount Arafat, after her father said that he could not continue on the journey and stopped for a break along the way.

The man had continued to the top of Mount Arafat but could not find the couple upon his descent.

Wurie received death notifications from the US Consulate in Jeddah, which had obtained them from the Saudi Interior Ministry, saying her parents had died of “natural causes” on June 15. She was later advised by someone at the US Embassy that heat stroke would be considered a natural cause.

The Consulate General’s Office told her that her parents had already been buried, but have been unable to tell her exactly where.

CLICK FOR MORE NEWS UPDATES HERE: www.sojworldnews.com

Now, Saida and her brothers are doing everything they can to get answers and find their parents’ burial place.

“We did ask the Saudi government to hold the bodies in order for us to travel to Saudi Arabia to at least give them the proper burial with [their] children being present and to be able to identify the bodies,” she told Whitfield. “Unfortunately, they have already been buried.”

Rescuers carry away a man affected by the scorching heat on a stretcher during the Hajj pilgrimage on June 16.

She would like American diplomats to meet her and her siblings on the ground when they arrive to assist them in finding where their parents are buried and collecting their belongings, since she does not know Arabic and is not familiar with the area. As of Saturday, diplomats have not committed to meeting them in person in Saudi Arabia, she said.

The US State Department confirmed there had been “deaths of multiple US citizens in Saudi Arabia,” but declined to comment on any specifics around the Wurie family.

Extreme heat has been named as a main factor behind the hundreds of deaths and injuries reported this year during the Hajj. Mecca, the holy city that is central for Hajj pilgrims, saw temperatures soar to a record-setting 125 degrees Fahrenheit on Monday.

High temperatures for this year’s gathering had been expected, with the Saudi army deploying more than 1,600 personnel with medical units and 30 rapid response teams specifically for heatstroke. Another 5,000 health and first aid volunteers were also on duty.

A woman uses a hand held battery run fan to cool off a man lying on the ground during the symbolic 'stoning of the devil' ritual at the annual hajj pilgrimage in Mina on June 16, 2024.

But CNN has spoken to other Hajj pilgrims who said the preparations weren’t enough, with one describing seeing fellow worshipers lose consciousness and walking past bodies covered in white cloths.

The exact death toll remains unclear and is expected to rise, as countries around the world have been independently announcing the deaths of their nationals.

Concern over improper tour groups has also grown. Egypt announced it was revoking the licenses of 16 travel agencies that organize Hajj trips on Saturday, according to the state-run news agency Ahram Online.

This isn’t the first time hundreds of pilgrims have died while traveling for the Hajj, which this year attracted more than 1.8 million people. In 2015 more than 700 people were killed during a stampede in the Saudi Arabian city of Mina, just outside of Mecca. In 2006, 363 people were killed during a stampede at the site where pilgrims gathered to participate in the ‘stoning of the devil’ ritual in Mina. Last year, more than 200 people died.

Onanuga who was the Editor-in-Chief and Founder of TheNews and Tempo magazines along with other fiery journalists risked their lives for the enthronement of the present democracy since 1999.

Many of these journalists were hounded into various prisons across Nigeria, veteran journalists like Dele Giwa was bombed to death while Kano Bureau of the Tempo, Bagauda Kaltho was missing in a mysterious circumstance till today, no one knows his whereabouts.

At a time, TheNews and the Tempo were Proscribed yet these fearless journalists published from their hideouts for Nigerians to know news updates.

I remembered I received my weekly Tempo and TheNews at my office in Bookshop House along Broad Street, Lagos.

I rather prefer not to eat than not paying for subscription for Tell, The News and Tempo.  It never occurred to me that I will still become an Online Publisher, my love for journalism knew no bounds.

Ever since my secondary days, I love reading Ebino Topsy and Tai Solarin on the 'State of The Nation' in the Sunday Tribune.

This is to celebrate a veteran icon in Journalism, Bayo Onanuga as he clocks 67 today.

On behalf of SOJ WORLDWIDE ONLINE NEWS, I wish our fearless activist, Bayo Onanuga a glorious birthday, long life and prosperity with joy, peace, happiness, sound health and God's protection.

This interview with The Nation anchored by Jide Babalola is dedicated to Onanuga who narrated how he narrowly escaped Abacha's bullets during the fierce struggles to enthrone democracy in Nigeria.

"Without any equivocation, Bayo Onanuga, along with the likes of his ‘fellow conspirators’, remains among the greatest icons of Nigerian journalism owing to his fearless and passionate leadership for committed journalists in confronting military rule. The News magazine, TEMPO and PM News that he founded along with his colleagues became thorns in the flesh of Nigeria’s military regimes.

Now in his first-ever assignment on the side of government as the Managing Director/CEO of the News Agency of Nigeria, Mr. Bayo Onanuga casts a backward glance at the pro-democracy struggle for the cause of June 12, 1993 election won by Chief MKO Abiola. He spoke with The Nation’s Assistant Editor, ‘Jide Babalola."

Enjoy The Interview in Honour of Bayo Onanuga:
Where were you on the date the annulment of June 12 1993 election was announced by Babangida’s military regime ?
I think I was in my office and when we heard it from our correspondent in Abuja, we initially thought it was a joke. The initial feeling was that no, it could not be possible. But our correspondent confirmed that there was a statement issued by Mr Nduka Irabor. At that time, Mr. Irabor was working for the Chief of General Staff (CGS).

For most of us who took part in the election of June 12 and for us , as a news organisation , because we already had the result and we already knew that Abiola had already won the election fair and square, we felt a sense of outrage, we felt it was wrong. We felt it was a monumental injustice to deny Abiola of his victory. We did not need anybody’s prodding on what we should do. We just felt we had a campaign for justice to wage. That was how it all started.

Don’t forget that before the June 12, 1993 election and before the 23rd June annulment of the election, there was another annulment before then in which some aspirants under both the SDP and NRC came out to contest for the presidential primaries of their respective political parties. Just after the results had been declared, Babangida decided to annul their election.

The underlying political trend at the time was quite significant in Nigeria’s history. You found a person like Shehu Yar’Adua beating Lateef Jakande in Lagos. There were several political upsets like that. But Babangida did not just annul the whole exercise, but went further to ban the contestants from further participating in politics.

The ban paved way for Abiola’s emergence as an aspirant for presidency in the SDP. Abiola came out, believing that the regime had learnt its lessons and that it was ready to turn a new leaf. Also, the citizens also believed that the transition programme was going to be a real transition programme, dismissing the anxieties of some activists that the transition programme, as being implemented had a ‘Hidden Agenda”.

After the primaries of the parties, Abiola emerged as the presidential candidate for the SDP. Tofa got the NRC ticket.
We were set for the election. Then came attempts to stop the election with a court judgement delivered at night. But another court ruled that the election should go ahead. So everybody voted. I voted too.

Part of reasons why the annulment pained me most was that I remembered that on the day I was going to vote, I made a lot of efforts to ensure I voted.

Then, somebody said the election had been cancelled. It was only natural we shared the national outrage in our newspapers. As journalists, we felt we should use our own tools to redress the injustice of that time.

The shock and disappointment was the primary inspiration for fighting against the annulment?
It was central to it. And even more important was the need for the enthronement of justice in our country. Those were the reasons we joined the struggle to validate June 12.

You have had some problems with the Babangida regime before then. What really happened?
Before we started publishing in February 1993, I was working for MKO Abiola’s Concord Press, as the Editor of the African Concord magazine. In April 1992, the Concord Organisation was shut down by Babangida’s administration. Because what we published in the magazine was the ‘cause’ of the shut-down , Abiola asked me to go and apologize to Babangida and Halilu Akilu, the Director of Military Intelligence. I opted to resign from African Concord. Many of the Senior Editors also resigned. So, we went to form ‘The News’ magazine and very early in the life of ‘The News’ magazine, when we were not up to three months old , they came to shut down our office. We then had a meeting: should we just go back home and go and start selling fish (a good business at the time ) or find something else to do? We decided to continue and see how far we could go in defying the military regime.

We had no office. We were operating from a space given to us by a friend. We continued to publish as if nothing happened. Initially, the regime did not do anything, but when they found out we were still publishing, in fact we were even publishing things that they termed subversive, they decided to act further .

The last interview we published before they proscribed the magazine was the interview with former Head of State, Major-General Muhammadu Buhari, in which he told us how the Babangida group toppled him. The title of the interview was “How I Was Toppled: Buhari”. One of the persons who conducted the interview was Bagauda Kaltho, who was later killed by the State.

So, an interview with Buhari precipitated the final closure of ‘the News’ magazine?
Yes. What Buhari’s interview precipitated was our final closure and proscription. We just heard it on radio. We had advertised that we were coming out with the Buhari interview and of course, we also tried to whet appetites by disclosing some of the things Buhari said in the interview.

That week when the magazine was about to come out, they announced the proscription and also declared many of our editors, including myself, wanted . In the interview, Buhari warned that the entire ‘transition programme ’ of the IBB military regime was a waste of time and that it was going to lead us to a pseudo-democracy. Eventually, we had the June 12, 1993 election about a week afterwards and it was a peaceful election, only for the government to annul it eleven days after.

Let no one distort history : the election was conclusive, the official results declared in each of the 30 states and Abuja. We already knew the results. Abiola won in 19 states and Abuja. Tofa won in 11 states. Abiola also defeated Tofa in Kano, Tofa’s home state. We published the election results in ‘The News’ magazine.

After that proscription and police announcing a manhunt for us, we again had to plan our next line of action. We had a meeting with all our staff and the idea was that we should float another magazine, ‘TEMPO’. The founding editors would henceforth play a backroom role. That was how TEMPO came to be.

TEMPO was going to be like ‘The News’ magazine, a normal magazine . I could recall that during the printing of our first edition, we were at the press and while the very beautiful magazine was being rolled out, the security services people suddenly appeared at the Abiola Press in Isolo, Lagos where we were printing.

When they came, they didn’t know me and they ordered the people working on the magazine to stop working. We were there because at that time, you needed to be there to ensure that no one succeeded in stealing your magazine . They ordered us, myself and Seye Kehinde, now publisher of City People, to pack our magazine into their truck. We had no other choice than to help them load our confiscated magazine into the truck. While we were loading the truck, we suspected at a stage, that the operatives could ask for our ID and decided to hide in one of the offices.

And that was what happened. Later they were shouting “Where are those men that were helping us to load, we are looking for them”. Because we had worked at Concord Press before, we shut ourselves inside one of the offices. We left when we were sure they had gone.

It all happened on a Saturday night. We left in great despair and we nearly gave up but for the luck of meeting Alhaji Lateef Jakande.

I met him at a function on Monday and the news was already all over the place that the military regime had seized TEMPO. So, Alhaji Jakande asked: “What are you going to do next?” And I said: “ I don’t know sir”. And he said: “Why don’t you turn the magazine into a tabloid. I can print for you?”
Tabloid? It never occurred to us that we could go tabloid, until the old master mentioned it. It was not a bad idea at all.

I left that function; it was that of a newspaper, “The Economist” being run by Haroun Adamu. That was where I met Alhaji Jakande. I left that place to meet my colleagues where we were always holding our meetings. I told them what Alhaji Jakande suggested. Everybody jumped at it.

Luckily, we had the negatives of the seized edition. So it was the negatives that we took to Jakande’s place. The lithographers had to re-shoot them all and blow them up to fit the newspaper size, which is the tabloid size. That was how we rolled out that magazine that they said they had seized. It came out on a Thursday because we had to use the entire Tuesday and Wednesday to plan it .

That was how it came out on Thursday. People were surprised that the TEMPO that the regime claimed to have banned still came out on the streets. That was the beginning of our guerrilla journalism.

Jakande was our first printer. But later, when we saw that he could not cope because the press was a small press, we now started looking for a bigger facility and the person that I went to meet was Chief Jim Nwobodo. He had run a newspaper called “The Satellite” in Ikeja, at that time and the paper had stopped coming out. I approached him and he agreed to print for us. We moved our printing to Satellite Press.

While all those stories were going round that we were printing underground somewhere, It was Jim Nwobodo and his Satellite Press that were printing for TEMPO. We were very careful not to go there during daytime; we only went there at night and before morning, we had finished printing.

That was how the guerrilla thing started. Well, we were guerrillas in the sense that we were not operating in the normal mode of other newspapers. We had secret locations where we held Editorial meetings. We only told our reporters to drop their handwritten stories at some designated places.

Our typesetting was done then in central Lagos at a friend’s computer centre. He carved a small space for us to operate. That was how we ran it until Babangida left and Ernest Shonekan’s Interim National government took over , giving us a respite.

Abacha came in a few months after and all the repression began all over again .

There were stories about how endangered pro-democracy activists sneaked out into exile through what is now known as the ‘NADECO Route’. Tell us about your journey into exile during that period .

In my own case I eventually had to leave Nigeria in December 1997. Before that, I first went into hibernation in my hometown in Ijebu-Ode for about a month and it was the Americans that now finally gave me a visa.

On a particular Sunday, some fellows from the DMI came to our office at Ijaiye Road in Ogba, Lagos. According to what I learnt later, they stood outside waiting for me. They did not see anybody like me. When they found out that workers had thinned out from the office, they went inside and picked one of the phones to call one of the numbers listed in one of our magazines. Someone picked the call at our secret printing press.

They asked the man: ‘We are looking for Mr Onanuga’ and the man said, “It’s 8pm, Mr Onanuga has gone home”. They asked how they could get me and that man replied that he did not know where I was staying.

We had warned all staff not to give out anybody’s address.

The caller then asked the receiver at the press: “Where are you speaking from?”. The man said he was speaking from where those people were, at 26 Ijaiye Road.

“But we are there and we can’t see you”, the caller said.

The receiver replied: “I am in that office”.
That was how they left Ijaiye office in anger.
The next place they went was Concord Press – Abiola Bookshop Press where the office of African Concord used to be. It was a Sunday evening and they met the gateman and asked again, about how they could reach me and they were told that I left Concord six years before then, that they didn’t know where I was staying.

So they left and they now went to Mr Dapo Olorunyomi’s house where they met his wife, Ladi.

She had been arrested several times. Anytime they were looking for Dapo and they could not get him they arrested his wife. They went to her and said: “This man is your husband’s colleague, we need his address”. And she said: “Yes, he is my husband’s colleague but I don’t know where he stays”.

They accused her of lying. She insisted she didn’t know my house, that anytime she wanted to see me, she met me at the office. So when Ladi did not reveal anything, they said they were going to arrest her. I suspected Ladi was not well dressed for the arrest, so she asked to be allowed to change before following them.

They agreed and Ladi went into her bedroom where she had a phone and called a friend of mine. She said: Look, there are some people here and they said they wanted to arrest me,” that the person should get in touch with me very quickly so I could disappear from my house.
That person called me. The person that was called was Abdul Oroh who raced to my house that night and told me what Ladi just said.

Ladi was taken away and she spent about four to five months with them. In my own case, after Abdul’s message, very early in the morning of Monday, I took a few things and disappeared into my home town.

Later, I got a message from someone very high up in government who told our intermediary I should disappear from Nigeria immediately. When that message was delivered and it was from a source that I could not just disregard, I decided to leave Nigeria.

The message was that they were not just coming to arrest me but that they actually wanted to kill me. If you go by what had happened before then, how they had killed Kudirat Abiola, Alfred Rewane and others, that was a grave warning indeed.

I left through the usual ‘NADECO route. Before I left Nigeria, I had to go and shave. I used to have some Afro hair on my head. I dressed like a farmer and bought some eye-glasses. I dressed more like an old school teacher and just carried a few things and headed towards Ghana.

The Americans were very helpful; they issued me a visa without having to appear at their embassy, they just asked me to send my passport and they issued the visa. I had to pass through the border to Republic of Benin, then Togo. I made sure that I didn’t stay or wait anywhere until I got to Accra, Ghana that night. Being in Accra, I was safe. Then I moved to America few days after. That was what happened at that time and it was so scary that when I got to America, I had nightmares for weeks about being pursued in Nigeria.

CLICK FOR MORE NEWS UPDATES HERE:   www.sojworldnews.com

Also, don’t forget by that time, many of my colleagues had been arrested. Ojudu was already in. He was arrested at the border; he was coming back to Nigeria. I think he went to attend a conference in Kenya and he was on his way home when he was picked up. Kunle Ajibade was already jailed for life. Dapo Olorunyomi was on exile. Seye Kehinde, for personal reasons, had floated City People. Jenkins Alumona, our editor was in detention. So many other people had been arrested at that time.

In a sordid way, those were very interesting times.
Yes. Very interesting. The result was that after most of us had disappeared, they now came in and shut down all our operations in one day but they were surprised that after shutting down everything and arresting thirteen of our staff; the following day PM News came out again and TEMPO, “The News” came out the following week. They didn’t know how it happened. It was an interesting time.

What I learnt from it all is that many of us were not afraid because there was nothing to be afraid of. My own thinking was that the soldiers like us bloody civilians, were also human beings. Even though they had the guns, we have the pen. We wanted to prove to them that our pen is mightier than the sword. We showed them that with the pen, we could really defeat them.

Did you ever meet General Babangida after he left office and what is your reading of his disposition afterwards?
After he left office, I met Babangida several times. I can tell you that from my reading of him and from what he said, he very much regretted the June 12 annulment.

One day, he told me that he believed that time is a healer and that over time, people will forgive him and so on. Well, I don’t know whether he has been proven right or wrong but the same time that he said is a healer has really been a healer if you note that twenty-five years after, another government decided to atone for what happened twenty-five years earlier. I believe that on June 12, 2018 wherever he was, Babangida would have felt ashamed of himself that while he was there, he did the wrong thing and it took another leader twenty-five years after, to correct what was obviously a grave error of judgment, a grave error of history.

Politics / SOCIAL Media On Fire As Obasanjo Wears Tinubu's Branded Cap, Visits First Lady, by SojWORLDWIDE(m): 10:30am On Jun 18
SOCIAL Media was set on fire as former President Olusegun Obasanjo was seen in an event adorned with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's branded Cap.

The scene became controversial considering the political differences between the former President and Tinubu in the pre-2023 Presidential election campaigns, the election and post election periods.

Obasanjo pitched his tent with the Presidential Candidate of the Labour Party, LP, Peter Obi, seeing him with Tinubu's branded Cap caused stirs in the Social Media.

What Reno Omokri said about Tinubu's branded Cap on Obasanjo,

"Thank you for your feedback. Let me help you zoom in on the logo on President Obasanjo's cap, so you can clearly see that Peter Obi was USED. Is that not Bola Tinubu's logo?

President Obasanjo does not like our candidate. But he is a strategist. He knew that if he came out openly against our candidate in the Peoples Democratic Party, it would win him sympathy votes. So, what did he do?

He supported Peter Obi, knowing he stood no chance. His only purpose was to divide the PDP's votes and ensure that the person he was against did not win.

Please note that he was not for Tinubu. He was just AGAINST our candidate. And he knows you guys. You are too proud even to accept that others are smart.

In fact, your own group pride is beyond ordinary pride. It is hubris. And it makes you the easiest people to deceive. Your lack of humility prevents you from seeing that you are being played.

You cannot control your emotions. Rather, your emotions control you. And we that control our emotions, know how to control you through your emotions.

All you guys know is brute aggression. No genuine strategy. You will see that your aggression is not working and what do you do?

You increase the tempo of what is obviously not working. No ability to stoop to conquer. Even the DGs of Obi's campaign...let me not talk.
Thanks again, John, and may God bless you."

Read What people say;

Reno Omokri on Obasanjo's surprise visit to First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu,

"First, it was the wearing of the Tinubu logo. A visit has now followed. But you can trust that they will still argue and refuse to accept that Peter Obi was used.

Pride mixed with stubbornness will prevent them from seeing and learning from the now obvious truth.

And their failure to learn from the past will make them repeat it in 2027.

President Obasanjo does not like our candidate (Atiku).
But he is a strategist.

He knew that if he came out openly against our candidate in the Peoples Democratic Party, it would win him sympathy votes during both the primaries and the general election. So, what did he do?

He supported Peter Obi, knowing Obi stood no chance. His only purpose was to divide the PDP's votes and ensure that the person he was against did not win.

Obi, because of hubris, did not consider that of your head is used to break coconut, you will obviously not eat it.

It is a military strategy called divide and conquer. If not for Peter Obi, Waziri Atiku Abubakar would have won the #NigerianElections2023"

Crime / POLICE Calls For Review Of Recruitment List Marred With Corruption, Non-applican by SojWORLDWIDE(m): 5:20pm On Jun 15
THE Nigeria Police Force has raised alarm over irregularities discovered in the just concluded Constable recruitment exercise conducted by the Police Service Commission, PSC.

In a Press Release signed by the Force Police Public Relations, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi available to SOJ WORLDWIDE, the Constable recruitment process was marred with irregularities and alleged corruption.

Adejobi went further that non-applicants were recruited instead of those who participated in the recruitment exercise.

"The Nigeria Police Force has raised alarm on the irregularities and alleged corruption of the recently released names of successful candidates in the ongoing 2022/23 Police Constables Recruitment Exercise.

This became necessary upon being inundated with a series of complaints and allegations of corruption raised by unsuspecting candidates and stakeholders on the irregularities that marred the exercise most especially the disappearance of the names of screened candidates who were successful to the last stage.

Upon careful scrutiny of the list released on the PSC portal, it was discovered that
i) Several names of persons purported to be names of successful candidates are those who did not even apply and therefore did not take part in the recruitment exercise.

ii) The published list contains several names of candidates who failed either the Computer Based Test (CBT) or the physical screening exercise or both.

iii) There are those who made it to the last stage of the exercise but were disqualified having been found Medically unfit through the standardised medical test but who also made the list of successful candidates as published by the PSC.

vi) Most worrisome is the allegation of financial dealings and corrupt practices leading to the outcome where unqualified and untrainable individuals have been shortlisted.

The Inspector General of Police had on 10th June 2024 written a letter of objection to the list addressed to the Chairman of the Commission, citing the discoveries listed above.

The reaction of the IGP was without prejudice to the power of the Commission to recruit for the police as ruled by the Supreme court but this power does not include the power to recruit unqualified and untrained individuals for the police. Noting that it is the police that bears the brunt of recruitment of unqualified individuals and not the PSC.

The same people who recruited anyhow for the police today will turn round to accuse the police tomorrow of inefficiency when their recruits start messing up.
The Police therefore has since dissociated itself from the published list and called for a review that will be transparent and credible.

It will be recalled that the leadership of the Police Service Commission, after the pronouncement of the Supreme Court ruling on the powers of the Commission to recruit for the Police, constituted a Joint Recruitment Board, to be headed by one of the Commissioners of the PSC, with the Deputy Inspector General of Police in charge of Training and Development in the Police Force as its Secretary.

But surprisingly, the Board was crippled and never allowed to carry out its mandate, insomuch that even the final list was not consented to by the Board.

The Nigeria Police Force therefore takes exception to this unpleasant development and calls for a total review of the process with a view to recruiting qualified, competent, trainable and productive hands into the Nigeria Police Force, in line with the vision of His Excellency President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's led administration on police reform.

The NPF hereby reiterates that we are not unconcerned about the plights and ordeals of prospective recruits, who have been subjected to all forms of rigorous screening exercise, assuring that it is our commitment to ensure that the process is thoroughly reviewed, stands fruitful and successful for the betterment of the Nigeria Police, and by extension the country."

Crime / Inside Life: I Was Very Hungry That I Had To Eat Our Dog’s Leftovers Food - Law by SojWORLDWIDE(m): 9:58am On Jun 14
A Lady, whose name was not known, who went through most harrowing experience in her adolescent years narrated the hardship she went through when her mother abandoned her when she was just seven months old.

She was living at the mercy of her stepmother who maltreated her to the extent of eating dog's leftovers, inserting pepper into her private part after intense beatings.

The lady who is now a qualified lawyer narrates her true life story,

"I was abandoned by my mother at the age of seven months (7months) with my father and stepmother. My stepmother was mean.

I endured all manner of maltreatments she meted at me. Sometimes I went hungry for days. She would so starve me that I would be seeing d€ath.

On one occasion, I was very hungry that I had to eat our dog’s leftovers food.

Our neighbor’s son caught me eating the dog’s leftover food (eba and egusi) and he told his mother who later that evening invited me to her house and asked me if what her son said was true.

I was so terrified that I begged her not to tell my step mother, because she will k!ll me if she knew that I ate the dog’s leftover instead of throwing it away.

The woman wept and promised to give me food everyday without my stepmother’s knowledge, a promise she kept till we left the compound.

As if starving me was not enough punishment, my Stepmother fl0gged me mercilessly until I would faint at times. She would also apply pepper in my vagina, eyes, armpit and neck, tie me up and abandon me in one of the toilets for days without food.

Despite all these experiences, I was very bright academically and was loved and favored by God and people.

I knew that the only way to escape was to achieve educational success, so I never joked with schooling. So you see, I have every right to be hateful, bitter, jealous, arrogant, sad, negative and toxic but I chose not to give up in life.
