Politics / You Are Responsible For Your Political Woes - Osun Apc Slams Aregbesola by SojWORLDWIDE(m): 5:10am On Jan 01
The Osun State chapter of the All Progressives Congress(APC) has cautioned former state Governor Rauf Aregbesola to put an end to his hide and seek game with the party as his negative role towards the plight of the party during the last series of elections in the state will remain his indelible albatross throughout his political journey of life.

The Osun State Chairman of the APC, Sooko Tajudeen Lawal, in a statement issued by the party's Director of Media and Information, Chief Kola Olabisi, today stated that the reason for the ranting of Mr Aregbesola over the party and the leader of the party, Alhaji Gboyega Oyetola, is only face-saving which does not, in any way, hold water.

According to Lawal: "Whoever is targeting an unmerited inheritance would come up with phoney stories.

"If it is true that Mr Rauf Aregbesola actually stated what was credited to him at the end of the year party of his renegade supporters in Ilesa, it is quite unfortunate. What we can only say is that it is an impossible utopia for a leopard to change its colour.

"Rauf can never change as what is in the blood can not be out of the flesh. Who between Alhaji Gboyega Oyetola and the ever cantankerous and garrullous Aregbesola is a man of peace? The answer is obvious.

"Was it Oyetola who was instrumental to the 30-month half salaries owed by the Aregbesola administration? Was it Oyetola who prevailed on Aregbesola to make an obnoxious consideration not to appoint those who assisted him to reclaim his victory by unilaterally outlawing anyone who was over 50 years old not to be appointed into his cabinet except the Attorney-General of the state, the Right Honourable Speaker of the House of Assembly, Barr Wale Afolabi?

"Was it Oyetola who put pressure on Aregbesola to insist that all schools in Osun wear the same uniform? Was it Oyetola who directed Aregbesola to change the names of all the government schools against the wish of the people of the communities where the schools are situated?

"Was it Oyetola who told Aregbesola to be an odd man out in Nigeria by renaming Osun State, State of Osun, which is against the provision of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria?

"We are equally aware that it wasn't Oyetola who pressurized Aregbesola to come up with a different school curriculum for both primary and secondary schools in the state.

"The excuses of Aregbesola for not coming for campaigns are misplaced, afterthought and should be disregarded as there is nothing new that the former Osun State governor could do to the APC that could be strange as it is on record that Aregbesola and his cohorts were active partakers in pulling down the political party that had made him a commissioner for eight years in Lagos; Osun State governor for eight years and a minister of the Federal Republic of Nigeria for four years.

"The development only portrayed the Ijesa-born former governor as a sadist and an ingrate who wittingly removed the metaphorical rope through which he got to the top in order to deny others from getting to the top.

"Aregbesola should know that history will not forget a king whose reign is peaceful and the one whose reign is crisis-ridden.

"A wicked man knows he is wicked but only waiting for who will tell him that he is. Aregbesola should know that it was his misgovernance with impunity in Osun State that contributed to the waning fortune of the APC in 2018 and 2022.

'Infact, as at that time, his name had become a political pariah. The confirmation of the Ataoja of Osogbo that Aregbesola and his cohorts contributed to the installation of the PDP government in Osun State is not new as it is a testimony to the fact that Aregbesola is only an APC chieftain during the day and a PDP member in the night.

"The man who lied that he begged Oyetola for three years should be asked when the three years began counting: was it before he unleashed TOP on Oyetola or after it? He is seeking political relevance but we will not be distracted by his antics", the state APC chairman asked rhetorically.

A middle aged man Mr. Taoreed Adewale Ajenifuja has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Lagos State governor and well meaning Nigerians to come to his rescue.

The Printer cum politician who resides in Shomolu area of Lagos narrated his ordeal to Mega Media and said he has written a passionate letter to the Lagos State governor Mr, Babajide Sanwoolu concerning his predicament.

According to him, “My son, Abdubakre Ayoade Ajenifuja was invited out from the house where he lived with my father (his own grandfather) in Ikorodu around 9 am sometimes in July, 2023 by one Samuel Adetola Diya who lives in that neigbourhood.

SOJ WORLDWIDE ONLINE NEWS Wins Award Of Excellence

Later that day, I was called upon that my son was involved in an Okada accident and was taken to Ikorodu General Hospital.

CONTACT Number Of Father:  +2348029792028

When I got to the hospital, I saw him tied to the bed in both hands and legs, separate apart; as he was restless on the bed in excruciating pain (I have the video of him) he wasn’t in a state to say anything to anybody but he was later transferred to AYINKE HOUSE(LASUTH IKEJA).

Ayoade Ajenifuja on hospital before he died

Getting there, I was asked to deposit N300,000 for the commencement of his treatment. I ran helter-sketer to raise the money to save my son but to cut a long story short the boy died and the Hospital demanded that I pay a balance of N550,000 which includes mortuary fees before I can take him out for burial.

I couldn’t raise the money in my mood of mourning and this dragged on for some months.

Prime Suspect, Samuel Adetola Diya

The Hospital and mortuary bill kept increasing to over N1m (One Million Naira) I later struggled through the streets of Lagos even to my enemies to raise N600,000 (Six Hundred Thousand Naira) and I pleaded with AYINKE HOUSE to take what I could raise but they refused, saying I must pay to the last kobo even as the bill keeps increasing with N3,000 mortuary fees every day, During this traumatic experience, I accused and arrested Samuel Adetola Diya who took my son out where he met the cause of his untimely death, which we are yet to unravel but the police released him in a jiffy, leaving me with my agony.”

Ajenifuja appealed to all Nigerians to intervene in this matter so he can lay the unfortunate event and his son to rest

But trust the Oyinbos they did their thorough investigation and finds out that I was just a victim of blackmail and her petition was thrashed and that episode confirmed that truly my story that I wasn't safe back home.

With the doggedness in me I fought back, attacked her project BRECAN, i wrote to all her international donors in the US, UK, Canada with proofs that she is a fraud using breast cancer victims pictures to seek for donations and those monies never got to the cancer patients rather into her personal purse, they investigated and finds out my allegations were true and immediately they stopped her yearly grants running into hundreds of thousands dollars annually.

Politics / BETTY Knew About The Death Of Akeredolu Three Hours Before Public Knowledge - AD by SojWORLDWIDE(m): 8:48pm On Dec 29, 2023
OLUJIMI Adekanle who revealed damning accusations against Betty Akeredolu, wife of ex-Governor of Ondo State, Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Odunayo Akeredolu said in a new Press Statement that Betty is not mourning the death of her husband.

According to Adekanle in his statement available to SOJ WORLDWIDE, he said Betty deliberately delayed the announcement of the death of her husband in order to sign some documents at the Government House before making the news public.

SOJ WORLDWIDE ONLINE NEWS Wins Award Of Excellence
"BETTY IS NOT MOURNING DON'T BE DECEIVED.
Those of you saying I should allow Betty mourn her husband, the truth is that she is not mourning Aketi, Betty knew about the death of her husband three hours before the news went public.

The first thing she did while in Government house Akure was to call her Special Assistant to come see her as early as 6.30am and told him to go bring some files from her office and she quickly wrote approved in all the memos, approved and payments were made before 9am and immediately she carried her bag and left for Ibadan.

And I have been saying it more than three years ago that Betty will leave Ondo State in shame, and truly that very morning she hurriedly left Alagbaka Government house Akure in shame and that was the end of her being addressed as First Lady, Digital Mama or Mama fowoso.

It was after 9am that the news of the demise of Aketi went public and that was when the Special Assistant now know the reason why Betty called him to bring those files for approval and payments.

Politics / Drama As Akeredolu’s Daughter Orders Journalists To Leave Fathers Residence by SojWORLDWIDE(m): 9:22pm On Dec 28, 2023
One of the daughters of the late Ondo State Governor, Rotimi Akeredolu, reportedly caused a mild drama on Wednesday when journalists stormed her father’s residence to cover reports.

The deceased’s daughter, Ololade Akeredolu, ordered journalists out of the Ibadan private residence of the late Ondo State Governor, as they made attempts to cover the condolence visit of the chairman of the Nigerian Governors’ Forum, Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq and his Oyo State counterpart, Seyi Makinde.

Recall that Akeredolu died on Wednesday morning after a prolonged battle with Leukemia.

However, Ololade according to Vanguard, was reportedly uncomfortable with the presence of journalists who trooped to her father’s residence to get reports yesterday, allegedly on the ground that it was a private residence and not a Government House.

Governor Abdulrazaq and Makinde had arived at the Jericho residence of the late governor at about 5:30 pm yesterday.

Upon their arrival, the two governors immediately proceeded to the private residence where Betty, the wife, and other close family members were grieving.

However, the tense atmosphere was diffused by the timely intervention of some colleagues, which calmed the agitated reporters stationed at the entrance gates of the residence, who were displeased with the negative response.

Recognizing the situation, the two governors emerged from the visit and made their way to the street, where the journalists were eagerly waiting to interview them.

During his speech, the governor of Kwara State praised the late governor for his dedication and significant contributions to society.

Abdulrazaq acknowledging Akeredolu’s passing as a tremendous loss to the nation, highlighted how he had reached the pinnacle of his career and political journey, leaving a lasting impact on developmental politics and humanity.

“This is a solemn affair, we are here today with the governor of Oyo state and myself on behalf of all the members of the Nigeria Governors Forum to pay a condolence visit to the family of the late Arakunrin Akeredolu. It is a sad affair.”

“We met the wife. We can just continue to pray that his soul will continue to rest in peace, and may God give the family the fortitude to bear the loss.”

“It is indeed a great loss for the nation. This is a man who rose to the height of his chosen career, the bar. He rose to become a Senior Advocate of Nigeria. He rose to the height of politics, he was the governor of a state.”

“He impacted greatly on humanity in developmental politics. All we can say for now is that may his soul rest in peace.”

“And we can also add that of the former Speaker, House of Representatives, Dr Ghali Naabba, may Allah forgive him his sins and give him al-Jannah firdus,” the Kwara State governor said.

In his separate remark, the Governor of Oyo State, Seyi Makinde, expressed his deep sorrow over the loss of a dear friend, a trusted companion, and a comrade with whom he had fought side by side.

He described Governor Akeredolu as a fearless leader who never shied away from speaking the truth, even in the face of power. The passing of Governor Akeredolu is not only a personal loss for Governor Makinde but also a significant loss for the entire southwest region.

He said:

“Well, I can say that I have lost a personal friend, a brother, somebody that we have been in the trenches together. When we were going to set up Amotekun, he was pivotal to it.

“And when we took the decision for Southern presidency, himself and the former governor of Anambra, they chaired the meeting at the Delta Government House.

“So, this is somebody that is a courageous individual, he doesn’t mince words. He says it as it is, he would speak truth to power. It is a big loss for me personally and for the southwest.”

“We will still continue to internalise it but we give God the glory that he lived a fulfilled life. At the end of the day, it is really not how long but how well he lived well. He impacted humanity and the Southwest of Nigeria.”

Crime / INSIDE LIFE: NEWS Behind The Story About The Man Who Commits Suicide After Losi by SojWORLDWIDE(m): 1:29pm On Dec 14, 2023
A young man from Arochukwu, Abia State identified as Onoh Chukwuma Richard has allegedly committed suicide after he reportedly lost N2.5Million to Betnaija.

Reports about his death emerged on Tuesday, December 12, 2023 after he died at Madonna Hospital in Umuahia.

Onoh had in his last Facebook post wrote,

"Today is my last day on earth! I’m going to meet my maker.
Thank you Chima Anyaso, Ikukuoma Abia, Kelvin Jombo Onumah, Ekwueme Ohafia, and my friends. My spirit is with you all."

Unknown to all, he has already took Sniper before making the post.

Doctors at the Madonna Hospital Umuahia struggled to resuscitate him but unfortunately he didn’t make it.

SOJ WORLDWIDE Correspondent gathered he allegedly lost N2.5 million to Betnaija and couldn’t bear the shame of the disturbances from those he borrowed money from.

COMMENTS:
"U get mine give us pain yesterday bro n u think ur death is a very good pain to us right? Why have u choose to give us pain in this Xmas bros. Why have u choose to make use cry since yesterday Onoh Chukwuma Richard while posting ur write up n the video u made of urself. Onoh Chukwuma Richard ur future was so bright and u play with it without considering us ur family n fans. U ended ur life without picking anyone calls . Bros u no try but it is well with u wherever u are now. Ur death is a very big pain to me n to everyone that love u. 12th December shall never be forgetting in a hurry.

Keep resting bro Onoh Chukwuma Richard . U will forever be remember bro. We move." - Nicholas Chinemerem.

"In all you do, please don’t die. The evil youths you’re even better than in Abia State will laugh over your death.

This is a comment a youth made about his fellow youth’s unfortunate circumstances in Abia, today.

God opened my eyes to see how poisonous these peanut boys can be and the extent they can go to show their bitterness and frustrations when Happy Boys had issues in Cyprus.

All of them thought I was gonna be affected, and they began to jubilate publicly. Jubilating over who’s 1 million times smart, hardworking and connected than you ?

I remarked even the least of them and profiled them.

Onoh Chukwuma Richard, this is so sad. You really broke my heart in particular by taking your own life.
- Mezie Abia"

"I'm not the type to jump on trends but while I have been surfing Mark's Facebook and Elon's X since yesterday, Mr Onoh Chukwuma Richard death news and pictures have been flying round.

Almost every news and blog platform carried it and all with similar caption " A young man kills himself after losing N2.5M on betting" and the online moral and righteous men and women jumped on it to crucify him further.

Now my questions are;
1. Is that all there is to Onoh? A gambler?
2. Why are the people close to him not saying anything positive about him?
3. How many of you checked up on him while he was going through his depressing phase?.

The closest I knew about Chukwuma was in UTUTU POLITICAL FORUM WhatsApp group where he was outspoken. He was one of the vibrant young men who took Abia and UTUTU political issues at heart.
He loved politics!!

To be frank I believe Onoh Chukwumah Richard was more than a gambler and it's annoying and insulting that all he would be remembered for was dying as a result of bet.

Now you all who posted him, how many times did you check up on him? What did you know about his problems?
What help did you render to him?

The strong ones we know also cry, they shoulder others responsibility and no one cares if they're okay.

These days there are hardly true friends and relatives who you can confide in. Everyone is all about their business. We only show love in death.
Let's do better!!" - Kalu Albert Ezuma.

Politics / FRANK Kokori Who Fought Abacha To A Standstill Using NUPENG, Neglected, Dies Unc by SojWORLDWIDE(m): 9:51pm On Dec 10, 2023
THURSDAY, December 7, 2023 was a sad day after the announcement of the passing away of the former General Secretary of National Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas (NUPENG), Chief Frank Ovie-Kokori.

I wept not because he was not old enough at 80 but because he must have died a sad man.

For those who do not know who Kokori was, this was a man who singlehandedly spearheaded the paralysis of Nigerian economy under General Sani Abacha to end the military rule.

He was a patriot, a nationalist and a detribalised Nigerian who fought the military under Abacha to a standstill fighting for the declaration of the winner of the June 12, 1993 election, Chief MKO Abiola.

Other activists including the media, NADECO and other pro-democracy activists built their struggles on NUPENG to put an end to military disaster in Nigeria.

Why I wept:  Those who truly fought for the democracy we are enjoying today never enjoyed any dividend of democracy.

Buhari spent eight years, no one remembered Kokori for a National Honour, not even an appointment. What a calamity! He was put at the back seat after his uncompromising stance fighting against the military rule, for democracy to thrive in Nigeria.  I am in doubt if President Bola Tinubu would have recognized him were he to be alive.

Little wonder, the adage says, "Eniti won ba t'ori re fo agbon ki i duro je." (Anyone whose head is used to break a coconut will never live to eat it).

I will want our readers to read summary of the ugly events pro-democracy activists went through to bring the democracy some shameless politicians who do not know how it came about are bastardizing today.

This piece was written by Festus ADEDAYO Published by PREMIUM TIMES, December 10, 2023

It was 25 years ago; Saturday, 10 October, 1998 to be precise. We were all inside the living room of the Yaba, Lagos modest home of Frank Ovie-Kokori. We were waiting for our heroes. In the heat of the June 12, 1993 presidential election validation saga, Kokori was secretary-general of the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas (NUPENG) workers and a major weapon deployed by pro-democracy activists to frustrate the vile government of General Sani Abacha. The journey from Ibadan, Oyo State to Lagos that morning had been devoid of its usual serpentine traffic snarl. My editor, Femi Adeoti, freshly out of Sani Abacha’s jailhouse at Agodi Prisons, had gotten wind of a small reception that was afoot in Kokori’s home. A day before then, on 9 October, self-exiled National Democratic Coalition (NADECO) chieftains, driven to scamper into exile by the blood-hounds of General Abacha, had arrived Nigeria from their various hideouts abroad.

Air Commodore Dan Suleiman, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, Reverend Peter Obadan, Senator Bola Tinubu returned to Nigeria on that day. Four months earlier, Nigeria had been relieved of the cruel, maximum rule of Abacha. He expired without a whimper. The country was, as well, recuperating from the unexpected death of Chief MKO Abiola, winner of the June 12, 1993 presidential election.

Unlike his military ruler predecessors, General Abdulsalami Abubakar had begun the genuine return of power to a democratically elected government. As a prelude to this, on 15 June, 1998, the new Head of State ordered the release of some high profile political detainees, which included the then General Olusegun Obasanjo, Ibrahim Dasuki, Chief Bola Ige, Beko Ransome-Kuti, Chris Anyanwu, Ovie-Kokori and some other journalists and pro-democracy activists who Abacha had incarcerated. On 9 July, 1998, Abubakar’s Provisional Ruling Council (PRC) also commuted to jail terms the death sentences earlier passed on General Diya and his colleagues for their alleged involvement in the December 1997 coup.

This was followed by his government’s unveiling of a political transition programme on 20 July, 1998, which affirmed 29 May, 1999 as handover date, thereafter proceeding on 11 August, 1998 to inaugurate a 14-member Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) headed by Justice Ephraim Akpata (rtd).

Assured that General Abubakar’s new government meant well, an exodus back to Nigeria of exiles who had fled the Abacha rule began. NADECO had been a huge thorn in the flesh of General Abacha. Formed on 15 May, 1994, the aim of the founding of the coalition was to press for the revalidation of the June 12 election. Its first baptism of fire was the 23 May, 1994 call for a boycott it made of the Abacha National Constitutional Conference. On NADECO’s order, that conference was massively boycotted, the South-West being the hub of resistance to it. The boycott was so intense and effective that Ibrahim Coomasie, Nigeria’s inspector general of Police, declared NADECO illegal on 31 May, 1994; a call which signposted Abacha’s eventual clampdown on Nigerian pro-democracy activists. NADECO then experienced the first bite of Abacha’s Dracula incisors, with its members bailing out of Nigeria through orthodox and unorthodox routes.

We sat awaiting Kokori’s august guests. They all arrived to pay what they called homage to the petroleum union czar. Dan Suleiman, Odigie-Oyegun, Peter Obadan, Bola Tinubu and Tokunbo Afikuyomi walked into Kokori’s living room hugging one another with a suffusion of handshakes. They were all obviously very excited at the reunion. It was not much of a speech-making event but an opportunity to relive the years in the trenches and appreciate how Providence had made them outlive the maniacal machinations of Abacha. As they did this, I moved round them for interviews. Bola Tinubu, the man who was senator in the previous aborted republic, and who today is the president of Nigeria, was my first target.

“What struck you as you first came back home; your impression of Nigeria now, that is?” I asked.

“Retrogression, rolling backwards, on reverse gear, that is my impression. Sad. That people are still queuing at the petrol stations, spend more productive hours at the petrol stations than in economic sector. It is a very sad story… You see poverty, glaringly in the face of the people in a nation that has so much resource to give. It hurts,” Tinubu told me.

When asked about his experience in exile, he made an ad-lib detour to Kokori: “…Our own situation was even much better than him (pointing to Kokori) who we are here to pay tribute to today. A man (detained) in dinghy, six by six cell, blindfolded, not with cloth but there was no daylight in the prison; he was tortured mentally, physically and emotionally. Ours was only restricted to mental torture…” The interview ended with my asking Tinubu to cast his mind back on Abacha’s rule and did he wonder how Nigeria could have ended up spending five grueling years under the dictator? His response: “Abacha was a possessed man, evil in true calling of it because he had no leadership quality, no vision whatsoever. He was trained to brutally win a war, shoot and kill…He coupled that with his sense of dishonesty, lying, manipulation and deception…What…became seriously sad was the people who now became members of the five political parties who wanted Abacha to reign. They could not see anything wrong in what Abacha was doing to their brothers and sisters. They are political prostitutes who should not have any political opportunity in any political environment in the next five to ten years… (they) don’t deserve to be in any position of trust or leadership in this country…”

Dan Suleiman too was full of praise for Kokori and all the returnee exiles had very uncomplimentary words for Abacha. For Commodore Suleiman, “his demise…was a judgment from above and our only desire is that we never have to go through such an era again in our lives.” To Obadan, “Abacha was bad news. He was a bloodthirsty demon and it is unfortunate that the military raised such a monster, very unfortunate.” When I asked Oyegun to look at the Abacha phenomenon in retrospect and proffer what was responsible for his downfall, he said, “I will say, God, because the good old saying is that those whom the gods wish to destroy, they first make mad.”

The likes of Kokori should remind Nigerians that the civil rule they enjoy today was not handed on a silver platter. It cost the lives, blood, tears and freedom of some Nigerians who fought for it as the country walked down the aisle of this long road to freedom. Kokori played a major role in the protests that sprung up across the country immediately General Ibrahim Babangida annulled the election. It was the first time NUPENG would be realising the awesome power in its hands to singlehandedly paralyse the country’s economy. Kokori weaponised this by instigating workers to embark on a strike that caused a total paralysis that grounded Nigeria’s economy. Thus, on 5 July, 1994, NUPENG and the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association (PENGASSAN) struck, throwing Nigeria into the longest strike in its history, as protest against the annulled presidential election raged in Nigeria.

A number of other events followed. On 8 July, 1994, an orgy of riots broke out in the Southwestern states, especially Lagos, Oyo, Ondo, Ogun, as well as Edo State, and on 3 August, 1994, the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC), in solidarity with the oil workers’ strike, also called for a general strike. This led to the crackdown by Abacha, who sacked the Executive Councils of NUPENG, PENGASSAN and NLC, shut down three newspapers, The PUNCH, Concord group and The Guardian. Abacha was said to have baited Kokori with a mouth-watering appointment and cash, but upon refusal, laid a snare for Kokori who was finally arrested on 18 August, 1994.

For those who didn’t know or have forgotten, Nigeria was a miniature war zone in the struggle between Abacha and the pro-democracy activists. On 31 May, 1995, a seismic bomb blast was recorded at the launch of the Family Support Programme (FSP) in the Ilorin Stadium. Two people died. Similarly, on 14 November, 1996 a car bomb exploded at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport, killing three people, including the Chief Security Officer of the Federal Airport Authority (FAA), Dr Shola Omasola. In Ondo, Ondo State on 25 September, 1997, a bomb went off in the country home of Chief Alex Akinyele, ex-information minister. I was there and saw the deep hole it made in the chief’s house. As the Yoruba say that calamities come in a jiffy (peki laa ko eemo), two weeks before his arrest, General Diya narrowly escaped being bombed when an explosion rocked the Abuja Airport, as he prepared to fly to Markurdi, Benue State to represent Abacha at the funeral of the mother of Major-General Lawrence Onoja. Intels later revealed that the Abacha government was behind the bombings. It was a precursor to his other calamities.

Unexplained murders of those who had one or two things to do against Abacha’s sit-tight government were rife, as some were either detained or they disappeared. Chief Alfred Rewane, Mrs Suliat Adedeji, Rear Admiral Olu Omotehinwa, Admiral Tunde Elegbede and many more were cruelly murdered. On 12 September, 1994, Olu Onagoruwa, a highly respected pro-democracy activist, who was serially pleaded with not to accept the Abacha invitation to work in his government, was sacked as attorney general and minister of justice, although he claimed to have resigned. Apparently having a feeling of monachopsis, Onagoruwa had disowned eight inhuman decrees promulgated by the Abacha government. He had earlier lost his son, Toyin, who was murdered by some unknown assailants.

In an interview he later granted TheNews magazine, Onagoruwa had explained Toyin’s death thus: “General Abacha was not happy with my departure from his government. He felt I was arrogant and over-bearing. News started to get to me that I was in danger and that I should be very careful…Little did we realise that he would pounce on our son, Oluwatoyin, who qualified as a lawyer in 1995. Toyin was very dear to us. He was a loving child; he was palpably cheerful and kind. He had one boy, Victor, as his friend. They were so close that the boy looked very much like part of our family. When this boy could not pay his school fees, I had to pay. On the day of his wedding, my wife and I stood in as his parents. We do not know how this boy got into the SSS (State Security Service) camp and these operatives used him against us. He told them Toyin’s movement in the evenings, particularly to his fiancee’s house; and he told them the address of the house… they felled Toyin.”

When some of us agonise on how little difference exists between then and now, few know the depth of our feeling of déjà vu and the privations we also suffered. I had resigned from the Tribune to join efforts with Segun Olatunji, Adeolu Akande, Wale Adebanwi and Bode Opeseitan in a newly founded newspaper named Omega Weekly. We were unpretentiously adversarial in our relationship to the military government. Our stories, features and editorial opinions were audaciously disdainful of Abacha and his government. Adebanwi got whiffs of happenings in the Villa almost immediately they occurred, which decorated the front pages of our newspaper. We were the newspaper wing of the pro-democracy activists. One day, we received Intels that Abacha’s goons were after us. So, in the night, we ferried all our computer machines to my rented apartment at Oke-Ayo, Odo Ona, Ibadan, where we began to produce the newspaper and to print it in undisclosed locations. God bless her soul, my landlady, Mrs Folasade Asake, never knew that high treason was being spun in her house. If any one of us was ever captured, we would have suffered Bagauda Kaltho’s fate.

In their hearts of hearts, many of those I interviewed in Kokori’s house on 10 October, 1998 must be thoroughly dejected about their post-Abacha Nigeria dream and what we have now. Nigeria, under “the progressives” and “the pro-democracy activists” answers to that old saying that the more things change, the more they stay the same.
Tinubu’s impression of Nigeria as “retrogression, rolling backwards, on reverse gear” is still the sad lot of the country today, if not worse. His “people are still queuing at the petrol stations, spending more productive hours at the petrol stations than in economic sector,” that he judged as a “very sad story” is still the sad story Nigeria grapples with. His “you see poverty, glaringly in the face of the people in a nation that has so much resource to give,” sounds like a prophecy he foretold of Nigeria in 2023 under his watch as president. Poverty and hunger seem like the prevailing zeitgeist in Nigeria now. The president must be agonising today about what to do to reverse his prophecies and make Nigerians sing Alleluyah. I am sure Frank Ovie-Kokori died a sad man last week.

The one that hurts most is that, if Tinubu, 25 years ago, was that incensed with General Abacha as “a possessed man, evil in true calling” and was riled at those who worked with him, who “could not see anything wrong in what Abacha was doing to their brothers and sisters,” how did he feel working for Abacha’s main man, Muhammadu Buhari, to be president in 2015 and how comfortable is he with Abacha’s very well known business associate, Abubakar Atiku Bagudu, as our minister of Budget and Economic Planning today?

I wonder what is the present state of the families of those who died in the struggle for the actualisation of June 12; those shot by soldiers and policemen; those who struggled for a better Nigeria but are confronted by an opaque future today. It reminds me of Peter Tosh’s “Jah Sey No song.” At some point, it dawned on this iconoclastic reggae music singer seeking change in the world that the struggle was a mirage. He was getting wary of the feeble impact of his songs, especially the repeated attacks and assaults without let that he got from the authority. So, in “Jah seh so”, Tosh launched into existential rhetorical questions. He repeatedly asked if a Rastaman, the longsuffering believer, “must bear this cross alone and all the heathens go free?/ Must Rasta live in misery and heathens in luxury?/Must righteous live in pain and always put to shame?/Must they be found guilty and always get the blame?”

Is that the song those who yearned for a great Nigeria; those who walked barefooted through the thistles and briers of military rule, are now singing? Frank Kokori died a few days ago on his 80th birthday. He was an authentic hero of democracy. May his valiant soul rest in peace.

Politics / He Died 60 Years Ago – Remembering D.o. Fagunwa (1903-1963), The Man That Made T by SojWORLDWIDE(m): 8:31am On Dec 10, 2023
SEVENTH December 2023 marks the diamond Jubilee celebration for the Yorùbá world, its patrimony and progenies when lovers of Yorùbá literature celebrated the 60th anniversary of the passing unto eternal glory of Chief Daniel Ọlọ́runfẹ́mi Fágúnwà, who until his death was a sage and icon of Yorùbá literature.

You will all agree with me that 60 years is long time but a short time in the life of a man. It has just rolled by like it was yesterday and today I roll back the stone that guarded the tombstone of a great man and remove his shroud with a eulogy that unmasks the greatness of this man who dominated his literary space like an ogre devouring creativity at its highest in his mother tongue.

He was born Oroowole Jaaniini. His father was Fagunwa, the son of Beyiioku from Agbo Ile Asunganga, Okeigbo. Oroowole was baptized as Daniel and adopted the name Olorunfemi when he went to St Andrews Teacher Training College Oyo. There he distinguished himself in music and literature. The Maharishi spoke with his pen like a Pentecostal speaking in tongues at a revival and overwhelmed his readers with his language that weaned you out like a new child sucking his mother's breast.

We never had enough of him and indeed the Yorùbá literary world will never have enough of this man who was always speaking to all like an evangelist who trained with the rabbi at the altar call of morals.

DO Fágúnwà was a Yorùbá property and an image of Yorùbá folklore as well as an epitome of its cultural sagacity. He was the first person to write a complete story in the Yorùbá language and until date his writings continue to inspire Yorùbá culture and legacy. He lived most of his later life at Ibadan, the centre of the Yorùbá world and the Yorùbá political paradise.

D O Fágúnwà was an adult educator, he had a non-formal class with the whole world as his classroom. There he spoke with the audacity of a sage from a larynx that was fecund with sagacity. Fágúnwà took you on a sojourn that was surreal and beyond imagination to a world that was adventurous and loaded with morality. Wole Soyinka evince that he was incorrigibly moral and I add that Fágúnwà ate only the foods of goodness and drank with a goblet of integrity from a pond of purity.

His books shall sit well and be held in favor by an Hadith of honour and would be found on hanger-lanes as the Yorùbá Bible of Goodness.

Fágúnwà’s teaching techniques were versatile. He borrowed copiously in his moral curriculum from his Yoruba culture, the Bible, Arabian Folktales and traditions of his birth town Okeigbo engaging in didactics that crisscrossed the boundaries of specificity whilst at the same time homing his thesis to his readers with the temerity of moonlight storyteller. Fagunwa was a philosopher. His theatrics were awesome; his humour overwhelming and his capacity for description was spectacular. Daniel Olorunfemi Fagunwa was audacious with his writings, his jurisprudence was incredible and his understanding of zoology mind boggling.

The gentleman regaled in a sagacity that basked on the efficacy of Omoluwabi syndrome.

To Fagunwa, Life was a learning curve. He invited the neighborhood to his classrooms to share with him the wealth of experience of those who have been to the worlds never previously experienced by all. He was normal; his recitations were normal and his language was normal. You needed no new experience to know who Fagunwa was or was talking about. His world was normal though bolstered, flamboyant and flavoured with traditional siftings. His heroes were valiant, hardworking, cultural, gifted and disciplined. Albeit, they were not perfect but erred in their respective lives making mistakes that are not new but evidenced in normal life. These heroes were ogres for personal development and were in sojourns to achieve goodness for their society. In their travails they confronted the unimaginable but triumphed and in groups many fell short of the Golden Fleece because of greed, avarice, overconfidence and envy whilst others were choked by vanity choosing short term gains and futility before grace and triumph.

We Fagunwa’s children celebrate him today, 7th December 2023 with DO Fagunwa Foundation and Department of Linguistics and African Languages, University of Ibadan with a lecture to be delivered in Trenchard Hall by an Ibadan-born intellectual, Professor Olaide Gbadamosi, a legal marabout and an intellectual whirlwind from the Ifetedo Campus of the Osun State University with an Ibadan collosus and President General of the Central Council of Ibadan Indigenes (CCII), a Chief Barrister Adeniyi Ajewole as the Chairman of the occasion.

Chief Ajewole is a Fagunwa scholar and a bastion of traditional jurisprudence. He is proud of his heritage and is Fagunwa inspired. He speaks of Fagunwa with pride like an evangelist quoting the Bible.

Finally, and for the records, I have read a book titled DO Fágúnwà: Beyond the Mythical written by one Mr. Olúwọlé Cole and Mrs Ìbùkúnadé Ṣíjúwọlá (nee Fágúnwà).

I need to correct that many of the contents of the book were imagined and belong to their fantasies. I wrote to the authors before the book was launched after I had a look at its content to point out that many of the issues raised were subjects of their imagination. I advised them to add an addendum to the book and correct what I pointed out. They agreed to do these but did nothing to correct any of their flaws. Thus, I need to correct these facts in their Fágúnwà history to check their attempt to rewrite the History of this great man.

This is important as in many years to come what is contained in the book would become a historical fact and generations to come including the Fágúnwà descendants would come to believe these incorrect facts about their roots and patrimony.

Indeed, these untruths would substitute in two hundred years, Fágúnwà’s legitimate history including that of his descendants especially that one of the authors of the book is DO Fágúnwà’s biological daughter. I have therefore decided to put the Fágúnwà records straight and challenge the authenticity of the claims in the book. I shall cite a few potent of errors for now.

First error is that Béyìíòkú (Daniel Ọlọ́runfẹ́mi Fágúnwà’s grandfather) was from Modákẹ́kẹ́, Ilé-Ifẹ̀. This is far from the truth. Béyìíòkú was an Òwu man from Orílé Òwu in modern Orígbó-Méjèje. He was not from Modákẹ́kẹ́ at all and had no lineage connection. Béyìíòkú’s father was Fáníyì and one of the founders and first settlers of Òkèigbó.

Indeed, the only connection DO Fágúnwà had with Modákẹ́kẹ́ was his first wife Mrs Rebecca Fágúnwà and mother of one of the authors who was a native of Modákẹ́kẹ́.

A second error in the book is that it claims that Daniel Olọ̀runfẹ́mi Fágúnwà had the facialograph or tribal marks called ‘Abàjà Ọlọ́fà’.

These are three vertical marks standing on four horizontal marks. DO Fágúnwà had Abàjà Olówu i.e three vertical marks standing on three horizontal ones and not Abàjà Ọlọ́fà’

The third error is that Joshua Fágúnwà (DO Fágúnwà’s father) was said to owe £4 that DO Fágúnwà had to redeem. DO Fágúnwà when he wrote his first book never paid off any debt.

Indeed, Joshua Fágúnwà, Daniel’s father was an affluent man and the landlord of Olójò-o Fágúnwà (Fágúnwà’s farmland) that the writers referred to in the book they published as Oko Olójò. Olójò-o Fágúnwà is a big farmland and exists till today. Further to this, if Joshua Fágúnwà owed £4, it would have been an issue for him in the church where he was the ‘Baálẹ̀ Ìjọ from about 1906 until he died in 1939 (the year Mrs Ìbùkúnadé Ṣíjúwọlá, one of the authors was born). I never came across this information anywhere else except in the book.

Fourth error is that the book claims that DO Fágúnwà died in River Niger. This is not true. DO Fágúnwà died when he drowned in River Wuya, Bida on December 7, 1963. River Niger does not pass through Bida town or anywhere near where DO Fágúnwà died. River Wuya passes through Bida in Niger State; till today, there is a staff in Wuya River on the spot where DO Fágúnwà met his death.

Fifth is that the book says that DO Fágúnwà was a businessman. He was not. DO Fágúnwà was a teacher, civil servant, and administrator.

Sixth error is that Taiwo Kehinde (co-authored with A J Lewis) went as far as Apá Karùn-ń and Apá kẹfà. Their book, Táíwò Kehìndé did not go this far. This Yorùbá grammar textbook is from Apá kìíní to Apá Kẹrìn-n. It is important to mention this so that Fágúnwà researchers in future would not be saddled with the goose chase of looking for a non-existent ‘Apá Karùn-ń and Apá kẹfà.

Finally, Kábíyèsí Ikú Bàbá Yèyé, the late Ọba Làmídì Adéyẹmí, the Aláàfin of Ọ̀yọ́ (reigned 1970-2021) was mentioned in the book to have been a pupil of Fagunwa whereas Fagunwa never taught the revered monarch. Kábíyèsí Làmídì Adéyẹmí was born 15th October 1938. This was a few months before DO Fágúnwà left St Andrew’s Practising School in 1939.

It would have been impossible for Kábíyèsí Làmídì Adéyẹmí who was less than a year-old boy to have been DO Fágúnwà’s pupil except he was an Àjàntálá.

Many of the contents of the book are untrue but I have only cited these few as a taster to those that may want to cross check the honesty of the book as research material.

Indeed, for a book that portends to be writing the truth about DO Fágúnwà, the gamut of errors in it speaks volumes for its integrity. I can only say to all that the book, DO Fágúnwà: Beyond the Mythical should be entertained with care.

Thank you.

Diípọ̀ Fágúnwà.

Celebrities / Why My Husband Goes To The Market For Me - Veteran Actress, Omotola Ekeinde by SojWORLDWIDE(m): 6:55pm On Dec 09, 2023
In a past interview with Potpourri and some other news outlets, Nigerian superstar actress, Omotola Jalade-Ekende has shared the secret of the success of her marriage.

Omotola has been married to Captain Matthew Ekeinde for 27 years, having been married at the age of 18.

Unlike many of her colleagues who could not hold together in a marriage, Omotola’s has become a model from which many entertainers could borrow a leaf from.

She preaches tolerance, submission, understanding, adding that the greatest mistake a woman can do is to claim equality to her man.

“A woman must know her place and submit to her husband. The greatest mistake a woman can make is to want to stand shoulder to shoulder with her man. When you show submission your man will respect and adore you gor it, she echoes.

I always tell people that women are stronger than men, psychologically. Let me tell you something more, my husband is actually the one who goes to the market. I don’t go to the market because I can’t. Because of my status, I can’t. But my husband didn’t say you know traditionally, a man is not supposed to go to the market, I’m not gonna go, no. My husband actually goes to the market, she has revealed much to the disbelief and outrage of so many.

Earlier in my career, I used to go with him but I’d stay in the car, because our cars are tinted, so I’d stay in the car. But then, one time we went to Tejuosho and someone found out I was in the car. It became a major security risk, so he said don’t ever go with me again. He goes and he has fun and he comes back home, and I do the cooking, so you see we strengthen each other.

I don’t think there is a man that can handle me apart from my husband. Not because I am a bad person, it is because I have a very strong personality. I can understand why a lot of female artists find it very difficult to find the right person. When you achieve some kind of success, you become really confused as to who really loves you for who you are. It’s not really easy, you know, so it is very hard finding those people who really love you. If you are not a very grounded person ,you too can contribute in some kind of way to your own problems and so I might have contributed to my own problems.

Of course, many men have walked the altar with actresses and oftentimes have found out it is not the heaven it promised to be. The time spent away from home on locations is just too much for some spouses to bear. And so is the limelight that comes with all forms of temptations and vices of life.

When I met him I was already an actress. I wasn’t a big star then, if anything, he was the one even encouraging me. To be honest with you, he’s my biggest movie fan. I don’t even watch most of my own movies, he’s the one who buys and watches them. There’s no one movie of mine he has not bought or watched. He doesn’t just watch them, he frames the posters. Most of the posters he framed them in wood and they are all over the house. The posters are framed into wood."

Celebrities / HISTORY: How OLIVER DE Coque's Most Kept Secret Took Him To An Early Grave As by SojWORLDWIDE(m): 12:26am On Dec 06, 2023
(April 14, 1947 - June 20, 2008. Age: 61)

HIS NAME, HIS MUSIC & HIS LIFESTYLE

Chief Dr. Oliver Sunday Akanite popularly known as Oliver De Coque was a Nigerian highlife musician and guitarist who has more than 50 albums to his credit and whose career lasted over 4 decades, making him one of the most popular highlife kings in Africa. Oliver and his music band group, 'Ogene Sound Super of Africa' blended modern highlife and traditional Igbo music.

The music star had 12 kids; 7 boys and 5 girls and they all enjoyed their father's presence.

"It was awesome. My siblings and I didn't see him as a famous person. He was a normal, caring, jovial and loving dad to us," Darlington Akanite, one of his sons disclosed.

While growing up, Oliver was popularly called, 'The Game Master' because he was good at the game of Draft. Draft in Igbo language is 'Okwe.' So, People began to call him 'Oliver Di ka Okwe.' He then changed the name to sound more like a French name; that was how he came up with, 'Oliver De Coque.'

HIS SIGNATURE LOOK

He loved to buy clothes and spent a lot of money maintaining his looks. Infact, he spent #30,000 on his beard weekly and that amounted to #120,000 monthly. He visited his Salon twice a week and always said his beard was his Signature look. He said that if someone decided to keep a beard, it was right to maintain it.

HIS SICKNESS & HOW HE DIED

He fell ill at the end of 2007. He was diabetic and hypertensive. Most artistes don't like to disclose their health challenge and his son is of the opinion that if Oliver had told people about his health challenge, he would have gotten help quickly. "He was ill for three months. He then recovered in February 2008 and began to go for shows. He died on June 20 but he had planned to travel to the U.S on July 2 for checkup," Darlington added.

He went further to tell the Press that it was as if his father knew he was going to die because on the day he died, he decided to stay indoors. "And he told me to stay by his side."

"That morning after he had his breakfast, he began to feel ill and cancelled his appointments for the day. I didn't know it was a serious matter; all I could do was to console him.

I went to the bathroom to take a shower and then told him that I wanted to visit a few friends but he begged me not to leave his side and I became upset. I thought he was just depriving me of having fun. I grudgingly stayed back."

While Darlington stayed with him, he began to tell him how he started his career. As he was telling the story, he complained of not breathing well. Oliver then decided that he should be taken to the hospital. On their way to the hospital, he told the driver to increase the air-condition that he was feeling hot. His son became scared when he started to shout, "Wheelbarrow! Wheelbarrow! Darlington, please bring a Wheelbarrow."

It was after his death, Darlington who wondered what was happening realized that the highlife maestro was referring to a WheelChair not actually a Wheelbarrow.

"I think he was becoming paralysed and unconscious. He was rushed to the emergency ward when we got to the hospital. And throughout his time in the hospital, he kept begging me to save him but there was nothing I could have done," the Son said.

He held Darlington's hand close to his side as he took his last breathe. His son closed his eyes and kissed him on the forehead. "I was so confused about all that happened."

LESSON

His son believes that more than 200 Igbo people would have laid their lives down for him if he had made his health condition public.

He's gone leaving behind a vacuum but he's taught the entire family a lesson that whenever one is facing a challenge, one shouldn't keep quiet about it. "I want people to learn from his death."

Politics / FIRST Time A Man (TINUBU) Who Fought For Democracy Became President Of Nigeria ( by SojWORLDWIDE(m): 11:51pm On Dec 05, 2023
A video is going viral on Social Media where an unidentified man aligned with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the roles he played fighting against the military for democracy to thrive in Nigeria.

He said Tinubu was not even marketed as one of those who fought the military to a standstill with the formation of Radio Freedom based in the United Kingdom with the likes of Dr. Kayode Fayemi, Prof. Wole Soyinka and others.

He added that those that had been leading Nigeria including General Ibrahim Babangida, Olusegun Obasanjo and others are military apologists and this is the first time, according to him, that a true democrat is leading Nigeria as a President.

Romance / 3 Ways To Get Rid Of Vaginal Odour (READ FULL DETAILS) by SojWORLDWIDE(m): 11:30pm On Dec 04, 2023
If you notice that your vagina is giving off a bad odour, it’s usually because the PH level is off the charts - basically, it is unbalanced.

Many reasons can cause your PH level to be imbalanced, chief among them are tight clothing, dirty underwear, underwear that isn’t cotton, drugs, hormonal imbalance, sweating, and sex.

How can you change the culture of your vagina?

1. Probiotic

This helps to maintain the normal bacterial level in the body and the vagina. Probiotics are drugs you can get at the pharmacy without a prescription. Yoghurt is also a good probiotic.

2. Apple cider vinegar

Apple cider vinegar increases the acidic levels in your vagina

Take apple cider vinegar with water. This changes the PH level of the vagina and makes it more acidic. The more acidic it is, the less it stinks.

3. Boric acid suppositories

These are little pills that go inside the vagina, they will also return the vagina to the normal PH level and thus improve the smell.

All of these can easily be gotten over the counter at a pharmacy.
