A Federal High Court sitting in Onitsha, Anambra State, and presided over by Justices S. M Shuaibu and Hauwa Inuwa has convicted and sentenced Forty-one (41) internet fraudsters to one-year imprisonment, each. The convicts were jailed after they pleaded guilty to one-count separate charges bordering on obtaining by false pretence, possession of fraudulent documents, personation and aiding in committing an offence upon arraignment by the Enugu Zonal Command of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC. The convicts are; Douglas James, Raphael Chikezie Uwakwe, Paul Chidera Kalu, Chisom Linus, Chiemezie Nweke, Eze Ugochukwu Stanley, Ndubuisi Nwafor, Ifeanyi Samuel, Nwosu Chukwuemeka, Madueke Emmanuel, Edozie Daniel Timothy, Ahmed Fredrick Lukman, Godwin Chukwuemelie Julius, Okafor Vincent Chiemerie, Ugochukwu Raphael Ena, Chukwuemeka Franklin Obiji, Chimaobi Emmanuel Gabriel, Abonyi Chibuike Jude, Chiemelie Igboekwuna Christian and Okafor Chukwuma Desmaond. Others include; Jezreel Arihiakamah Chinwendu, Paul Okereke Chiadi, Peter Chidera Iwu, Onyeji Victor Chinecherem, Tochukwu Eze Solomon, Fred Chidera Okoye, Ezema Chiemerie Stanley, Emeka Ogbonna Daniel, Obinna Stanley Okafor, Udochukwu Peter Nnaewezie, Ebuka Johnson Olu, Okochi Ebuka Stanley, Promise Ogbodo Echezona, Ebuka Chukwu Joshua, Chisom Henry Udeagwueze, Ihechi Okechukwu Bright, Chibueze Maxwell Stephen, Ebuka Lucky Nwankwo, Isah Chinonso Peter, Ifeanyi Oguoke Kingsley and Chinonso Eze Innocent. One of the separate charges reads: “That you, Uwakwe Chikezie Raphael sometime in 2024 in Onitsha, Anambra State within the jurisdiction of the Federal High Court in Nigeria, fraudulently impersonated the identity of Everly Ruby, a female foreigner through a Google account, via your iphone X with intent to obtain money from unsuspecting foreign nationals and in order to gain advantage of yourself and you thereby committed an offence contrary to Section 22 (3) (a) (b) of the Cybercrime (Prohibition, Prevention etc) Act, 2015 and punishable under Section 22 (4) of the same Act”. CLICK FOR MORE NEWS UPDATES HERE: www.sojworldnews.com All the 41 defendants pleaded “guilty” when their charges were read to them separately, and in view of their pleas, Michael Ikechukwu Ani, counsel to the EFCC prayed the court to convict and sentence them accordingly. However, defence counsel, Wisdom Ogbonna, Bernard Okeke, James Nwatarali and Arinze Anyigo pleaded the court for leniency and to temper justice with mercy in sentencing their clients adding that they have shown enough remorse for their actions. Justice Inuwa, on Thursday, May 2 2024, convicted and sentenced 27 of the convicts while the rest 14 were convicted on Friday, May 3, 2024. Those convicted on May 3 are: Chiadi, Samuel, Chinecherem, Timothy, Stanley, Bright, Iwu, Lukman, Nweke, Chukwuemeka, Okafor, Stephen, Chiemerie and Christian to one-year imprisonment each with an option of fine of N100,000.00 (One Hundred Thousand Naira). The Justices also ordered that the convicts should be involved in Community Service in line with Section 462 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act and ordered that items recovered from them, which include their mobile phones and laptops be auctioned through the EFCC and proceeds paid into the Treasury Single Account. All the convicts bagged their imprisonment when they were arrested for their involvement in internet fraud. They were charged to court and convicted. SENATOR Jimoh Ibrahim, is the Senator of the federal republic of Nigeria, representing Ondo State South Senatorial District at the National Assembly. 'Chief Araba' as he is fondly called, is an indigene of Igbotako in Okitipupa Local Government Area of Ondo State. He clocked 57-year-old on February 18, 2024. Jimoh Ibrahim is a different personality to different people, some see him as a Lawyer, some as a businessman, some as a Philanthropist, even some as a giver but for me, I see him as my benefactor wayback in 1988. My brother, Lad Noble of blessed memory took me to his palatial resident at the Victoria Garden City, VGC in Lagos as an applicant seeking employment. It was at the time he wanted to build fuel station on a swampy land of over one acre of land along Lekki-Epe Expressway in Lagos in 1998. After my brother formally introduced him to me, I always journeyed from Ilasamaja on the mainland to VGC from time to time not minding the distance. It is from one end to the other. It was either I meet him at the site supervising his project or at home. Most times I would be there till evening from where I always have my lunch. All this while, he was monitoring me, unknown to me. After almost a year of my persistence and regular visits, he called me and asked, which of the two banks would I prefer to work? He mentioned Fidelity Bank and Oceanic Bank International. At the time, Fidelity Bank was not as popular as Oceanic Bank, I was a bit confused but I chose Fidelity Bank over Oceanic. He gave me a handwritten note to the Human Resources. It was on that day I got to know that you need somebody to become somebody. Immediately I handed the letter to the HR Head, I was invited for an Interview. In summary, I was employed by Fidelity Bank to work at the VGC Branch inside his Mega Petrol Station he built housing the Oceanic Bank on the Ground Floor while Fidelity Bank was on the next floor. Our relationship became cordial anytime he visited our bank for his bank transactions I would attend to him. I was also close to his family. What I noticed in him, he doesn't believe anything is impossible, he supervised his work and he is a no nonsense man. He can be ruthless to get things done. One incident that called my attention was when he sacked his Personal Assistant, P.A. whom I was told they were once a classmate in secondary school. Why did he sack him? As I tried to wade into the issue, he said he can never call him back because he breached the trust he reposed in him. He investigated the man and found out he had a secret account with the bank I worked, he said he invited him for enquiry, he denied ever opening any account. That was the bone of contention. ON GUBERNATORIAL RACE Let me fast-forward this piece to the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship primary election held, April 20, 2024. Was the election free, fair and credible? Only the incumbent Governor, Lucky Orimisan Ayedatiwa and his loyalists can lay claim to it that it was free and fair. Meanwhile, the Ondo South Senatorial District I monitored, election was not held. Many people waited till the afternoon without electoral officials. Other Senatorial Districts witnessed intimidation and threat to their lives and elections did not hold. Jimoh Ibrahim that I know is a rugged, brilliant, articulate, intelligent man with sense of tenacity to see things to logical conclusion. He is courageous to a fault that many of his critics say he is too proud and arrogant. Is he stubborn? One may not be too far from it because he will put everything at his disposal to fight a cause with or without any external support once he believed in it. We should not forget in a hurry the election of Rotimi Akeredolu for the Second Term in office, Jimoh was instrumental to the defeat of the People's Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, Eyitayo Jegede (SAN), the rest is now history. Former Governor of Ondo State, Olusegun Mimiko will never forget Jimoh Ibrahim in a hurry. I told those who cared to listen that Jimoh Ibrahim will never accept the APC primary election and that he will fight it to the end. That was when he has not even reacted to the outcome of the election. My personal opinion is this, if the election had been conducted without any violence, intimidation and allowed to hold peacefully, Ayedatiwa would have won with the power of incumbency but because politician is used to rock the boat, rigging of election cannot be separated from Nigerian politicians. It is in their genes. CAN JIMOH IBRAHIM PERFORM AS A GOVERNOR? Jimoh Ibrahim will surely perform to his best because he will make sure he monitored and supervised everything including all projects. He wake up at the middle of the night to supervise his projects to make sure it is done to his taste. If anyone is caught in any sharp practices, it is either the contract is revoked or persons involved will be arrested. We need such a hard man at the helm of affairs. One challenge about him is, he is unpredictable, you cannot predict his next line of action. He is controversial. I visited his country home at Igbotako last year, few months to his Senatorial election, I asked if he can still recognize me, he said why not. I told him about my brother's death and echoed what was reportedly said in the media that if he should win the senatorial seat, he will restore electricity back to Ikale and Ilaje area in 100 days. He denied he ever said so, he said he has never given any specific time limit but that he will work on it. The residents are earnestly waiting to see the light after over 15 years in darkness. Once the 'Olowo Ori, Oko' Mrs Modupe Jimoh set his minds on something he must have done his homework well. If APC do not want their boat to be rocked on November 16, 2024 governorship election, the earlier the better they settle with this man that I know will not shift grounds. THE Senator representing the Ondo State Senatorial District, Dr. Jimoh Ibrahim has vowed to pursue his case relating to the All Progressives Congress, APC Primary election that declared the incumbent Governor, Lucky Orimisan Ayedatiwa the winner to a logical conclusion. Jimoh claimed that election did not take place in 203 Wards including the Governor's Ward making reference to INEC report. In a Press Conference on Tuesday, May 7, 2024, the Senator said he has exhausted "all internal party mechanisms" within the hiarachy of the APC "for political settlement" by cancelling the election and another one conducted all to no avail. "I am already in court with the determination to pursue the case to a logical conclusion at the Supreme Court. I have exhausted all the internal party mechanisms for political settlement, including a written petition to the Appeal Committee set up by the party, and also wrote to the National Working Committee, NWC the highest decision making of the party, all to no avail. Therefore, I am at liberty to approach the court of law for judicial solutions. THIS is my experience on Monday, May 6, 2024 at exactly 11.03 am, I received a call from one Patrick who said there is going to be a zoom meeting in one of the Whatsapp groups I belong. I said it's okay, I was playing along with him having known their tricks and how they have rendered many penniless after they must have emptied their accounts. I have used my medium, www.sojworldsnews.com to alert people yet people continued to fall victims. Initially, they started by hacking people's lines using through phone calls while they send six digit numbers as text message to your phone number. They will request for the codes after which they will hack the number and everything attached to the number including bank accounts will be attacked. They will use it to empty the accounts, use your name on Facebook, Whatsapp, Instagram, X.com to commit financial crimes on your behalf. They have now advanced their strategies from using ordinary phone calls to using Whatsapp call and send the six digit numbers that will appear on your WhatsApp simultaneously as he speaks to you. He asked if I have received any number for the zoom meeting, I said no. He said, I will receive in seconds, immediately the six codes popped up, he said I should call the number for him. My response: I said, "It shall not be well with you." I didn't allow him to respond when I put off the conversation. As if that was not enough, he called my Airtel number in a split of seconds unknown to him that the line belongs to me. It is still the same 'Patrick' with the same method he plotted to take away the little efforts I was able to save in my bank accounts after hard days work with sleepless nights doing my legitimate business. After he had said everything and I saw his six codes, I said, "I just issued a curse on you now, you have forgotten you are speaking with the same person, "it shall not be well with forever." He dropped the call. Many people have fallen victims, they have turned many people from grace to grass lately with their latest methods. Don't be a victim. If after reading my 'True Life Experience" and you still fall victims, you will have yourself to blame. Editor's Note: If you know anyone, a relative, a friend or your child who is into this type of nefarious activities, kindly counsel him or her out of it before it is too late. Little curse I placed on him will surely come to pass because one cannot be living large while leaving others in pains and penury. It is not done. These categories of people cannot live long, they always die in their prime. Nigeria is tough with irresponsible leaders, that is not enough excuse to make others to cry for you to enjoy life. THIS is my experience on Monday, May 6, 2024 at exactly 11.03 am, I received a call from one Patrick who said there is going to be a zoom meeting in one of the Whatsapp groups I belong. I said it's okay, I was playing along with him having known their tricks and how they have rendered many penniless after they must have emptied their accounts. I have used my medium, www.sojworldsnews.com to alert people yet people continued to fall victims. Initially, they started by hacking people's lines using through phone calls while they send six digit numbers as text message to your phone number. They will request for the codes after which they will hack the number and everything attached to the number including bank accounts will be attacked. They will use it to empty the accounts, use your name on Facebook, Whatsapp, Instagram, X.com to commit financial crimes on your behalf. They have now advanced their strategies from using ordinary phone calls to using Whatsapp call and send the six digit numbers that will appear on your WhatsApp simultaneously as he speaks to you. He asked if I have received any number for the zoom meeting, I said no. He said, I will receive in seconds, immediately the six codes popped up, he said I should call the number for him. My response: I said, "It shall not be well with you." I didn't allow him to respond when I put off the conversation. As if that was not enough, he called my Airtel number in a split of seconds unknown to him that the line belongs to me. It is still the same 'Patrick' with the same method he plotted to take away the little efforts I was able to save in my bank accounts after hard days work with sleepless nights doing my legitimate business. After he had said everything and I saw his six codes, I said, "I just issued a curse on you now, you have forgotten you are speaking with the same person, "it shall not be well with forever." He dropped the call. Many people have fallen victims, they have turned many people from grace to grass lately with their latest methods. Don't be a victim. If after reading my 'True Life Experience" and you still fall victims, you will have yourself to blame. I could remember how my mother's sister came to the village and told my mother that her friend needed someone who would live with her to take care of her children and other house chores. Few days later,we headed to the city,I must say,living and serving my madam wasn't a difficult one because she and her husband treated me so well but as you all know,no one would treat you better than your parents. There were many challenges that,sometimes I would wished to go back to my parents but when I remember my education,I pick up myself and stay put. Years later when I was about writing my senior waec,my madam's brother came to stay with us. He was doing his youth service. My madam and her husband are travellers,so they hardly stay at home. One night,I was at the bathroom having a cool shower and coming out from the bathroom,I met my madam's brother sitting on my bed and I was na.ked,I quickly ran to take a towel covered my body and then asked him why he was in my room,he told me he came to check if I was with the television remote,which I said no and then he left immediately. Ever since then,he started making advances of me,one Saturday night,he tried to force me to sleep with him but I turned him down. Other times,he would try but I warned him to stay away from me that I'm not ready for anything as such as I wouldn't want to get pregnant and my education is very important to me. Few days later,he came to me to apologise for what he did and I forgave him. Hmm he started being nice to me,he would help me to do some of the house chores and also buy me gifts. One night,he came back with one fancy nylon and handed it over to me,inside the nylon was juice and ice cream,he asked me to step it down and enjoy myself before the kids wakes up and snatch it from me and which I did. A month later,I started feeling so sick that my madam took me to the hospital and several tests was conducted on me and I was confirmed pregnant🥺 on that day,I was the definition of 'SHOCK' because I became so shocked and at the same time speechless, immediately the doctor spoke out this word,the sickness left me🥺. My madam took me by my ear and asked me who got me Pregnant,I told her that I can't be pregnant because I have never met with any man in my entire life. She gave me a sla.p and the doctors and nurses there held her and tried to calm her down. Everyone who heard of it would ask me who got me Pregnant and my answer would be 'I don't know because I have never opened my legs for any man' I cried my eyes out,I was lost in thoughts,the pressure became much,I told my madam that I have never met with any man except his brother who tried to force me on the days when they were away but I didn't let him. She and her husband called her brother to ask him if he did anything with me,but upon asking him,he denied ever trying such and then warned me never to mention his name. He even went further to tell them that he has caught me with different men in several occasions but I begged him not to report to them about that. At this point, my madam and her husband became so ma.d at me and they didn't even allow me to say anything again🥺 immediately,they told me to pack my things and she took me back to my parents and told them my condition. My mother pleaded with her,but she said she can no longer live with me since I'm pregnant and I refused to say who's responsible for it. My mother and every other person asked me who got me Pregnant,but I sincerely do not have answers to that question since I can't remember ever making out with any man. I suffered pains and sha.mes,people would mo.ck me and call me names, some calls me Mary the second, pregnanted by the Holy spirit. My mother would shout at me and call me names,use.less and stu.pid.they brought several old suitors to come and marry me but I refused. I keep asking myself,who could this be,what really happened to me,was I ra.pped unaware,did any spirit slept with me🥺 it was as if my whole world was coming to an end. Everyday,my stomach keeps coming out,I was getting sick and when I talked to my mother about my health,she would warn me never to disturb her,since I can't provide the man responsible for the pregnancy. Some days,I would wish I sleep and never wakes up.one day,a friend of my mother came and spoke to her and she changed and started treating me better. I was taking to one midwife and she started helping me out. Fast forward to when I gave birth,it was twin boys. On the arrival of my kids,I started receiving favours from people. One day when my kids were 5months old,my mother told me to look at both of them and tell her who they look like to see if I could remember who got me Pregnant. Looking At them,I can see a familiar face and tears dropping down my eyes but I can't seems to lay my head on anyone. Seeing my tears,my mother said,it's okay,I'm sorry for asking. She wiped my tears and gave me words of encouragements. Ten years on,one hot afternoon I and my mother was coming back from the farm,getting to our house,we saw two cars parked,before then,my sons has ran up to us and told us that some group of people have been waiting for us at home. He said because I refused to grant his request about making out with him,he added a sleeping pill in the juice he bought for me on that night and when he noticed I've slept off,he then had his way and also noticed it was my first time but after everything,he cleaned me up and made everywhere look as though nothing happened and when I became pregnant,he had to lie against me about bringing in men so that no one would suspect him. At this point,I was already socked in tears and everyone around was begging on his behalf. He also confessed how hard life has been to him and this is because of his actions towards me. He got married but no child after several years that his wife have to leave the marriage because she discovered that it was his fault. Everyone pleaded that I should forgive him as his ready to do the necessary things as tradition demands. On the wedding day, a feast is organized at the bride’s home where the father is to slaughter a bull while at the groom’s home there is also a feast to consummate the marriage. But first, there has to be one last ceremony, that involves tests that must be done by the bride’s aunt. It involves the bride’s aunt testing the sexual ability of the groom by having s€x with him. The Federal Government has approved an increase of between 25% and 35% in salary Increase for Civil Servants on the remaining six Consolidated Salary Structures. The Salary Structure is the Consolidated Public Service Salary Structure (CONPSS), Consolidated Research and Allied Institutions Salary Structure (CONRAISS), Consolidated Police Salary Structure (CONPOSS), Consolidated Para-military Salary Structure (CONPASS), Consolidated Intelligence Community Salary Structure (CONICCS) and Consolidated Armed Forces Salary Structure (CONAFSS). It will be recalled that those in the Tertiary Education and Health Sectors had already received their increases which involved Consolidated University Academic Salary Structure (CONUASS) and Consolidated Tertiary Institutions Salary Structure (CONTISS) for Universities. For Polytechnics and Colleges of Education, it involved the Consolidated Polytechnics and Colleges of Education Academic Staff Salary Structure (CONPCASS) and Consolidated Tertiary Educational Institutions Salary Structure (CONTEDISS). The Health Sector also benefitted through the Consolidated Medical Salary Structure (CONMESS) and Consolidated Health Sector Salary Structure (CONHESS). A statement signed by the Head of Press, National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission (NSIWC), Emmanuel Njoku said the increases take effect from 1st January 2024. The Federal Government has also approved increases In pension of between 20% and 28% for pensioners on the Defined Benefits Scheme in respect to the above-mentioned six consolidated salary structures with effect from 1st January 2024. As a result of the warning by Northern Groups, represented by the Arewa Youth Consultative Forum (AYCF) and the Northern Awareness Network (NAN) who raised alarm over what they perceived as a covert scheme to thwart President Bola Tinubu’s potential bid for re-election in 2027, ARMS is inevitable to counter wrong impression, opposition and threats from any quarter against Tinubu's second term. Onoh said, "Unlike the outcome of the immediate past Presidential election in the Southeast where the APC party big wigs failed to secure victory for the President in the Region due to various selfish political interests of all major Southeast APC stakeholders who placed more interest in pursuing their different interests without making any effort to deliver the President, this group was floated to promote the President without any prejudice. Appointees like the CBN Governor, Yemi Cardoso and his team are working hard to ensure they give a desired kick to the economy so that Nigerians come 2027 will look back and say, yes, "from 2023, our lives under Tinubu have improved qualitatively", then the millions of votes cast for Tinubu to emerge our President will not have been wasted. With the enormous resources of the country, the Tinubu administration cannot peddle any excuse for failing to deliver on his Renew Hope Mandate and the direly needed public goods. That will answer the question of whether any section of the country can decide the outcome of the Peoples choice come 2027. Before the elections in 2023, there was an apparent gang up against the candidacy of Tinubu from almost every region of the country and the then incumbent government. But these political manipulations from different politicians in the country was extinguished by the Nigerian electorates corkscrew drive for change of the Buhari administration. The economy was collapsing; the social structure was hastily diminishing; Characters like the then CBN Governor, Godwin Emefiele turned political Presidential Aspirant introduced manipulative and detrimental financial policies aimed not only at President Tinubu but Nigerians as a whole, the state of insecurity was day-by-day becoming excruciating. President Tinubu inherited a fancy attractive well packaged economic disaster, a complete failed economy but he's not complaining neither do you see him blaming the past administration like most previous administrations do. OVER 10 cars caught fire as a result of fuel tanker explosion along Eleme section of the East-West Road in Rivers State on Friday night. Four people reportedly died in the inferno. When Paul Allen and I started Microsoft, we had an ambitious goal: to put a computer on every desk and in every home. A lot of people thought we were out of our minds. But we believed in the power and potential of these machines to change the world. So every day, we came to work determined to make it happen. Now, it’s hard to imagine the world any other way. In a few short decades, that goal became reality for billions. In 1990, the possibility that the world would be able to cut child mortality in half over the next thirty years would have seemed just as remote. But that’s exactly what happened. And I believe the world can do it again by 2040—we can cut child mortality in half once more—and get even closer to ending all preventable child deaths. My introduction to this issue came 27 years ago, when I read a piece in the New York Times about deadly drinking water in the world’s poorest countries that contained the following statistic: “Diarrhea kills some 3.1 million people annually, almost all of them children.” Learning that shocked me to my core. There’s no greater pain than the death of a child. The death of millions of them—from something easily treatable in much of the world—is tragedy after tragedy on an almost unfathomable scale. Before long, I was learning everything I could about global health generally and child mortality specifically. And shortly after, the Gates Foundation, which was just getting off the ground, made it our mission to fight preventable health disparities like this around the world—with an emphasis on children whose lives were being cut short before they ever had a chance. We had phenomenal partners in that effort across governments, in the private sector, and from foundations and organizations that share our mission. And by 2019, something remarkable had happened—what I consider to be one of the most important things humanity has ever achieved: In under three decades, child mortality was cut by more than half. (For more about how this happened, and all the partners who deserve credit, see my blog post from two years ago). Measles deaths fell 90 percent thanks to vaccines. Pneumonia deaths fell 70 percent, also thanks to vaccines. Deaths from diarrhea—which killed 3 million kids a year not too long ago—fell 70 percent, too, thanks to low-tech interventions like oral rehydration solution, large-scale sanitation programs, and (yes, you guessed it) a new rotavirus vaccine. Malaria deaths fell 36 percent thanks to effective bed nets and sprays. Even deaths from HIV, which more than tripled as a killer of kids in the 1990s, fell 33 percent once we figured out how to protect and treat mothers so they don’t pass the virus on to their babies. It wasn’t just the child mortality rates from these diseases that went down, though. Year after year, the raw number of overall childhood deaths fell—even as the global population rose—from 12 million in 1990 to five million in 2019. We’ve made incredible progress, and we keep moving in the right direction. But we aren’t moving fast enough. Just under five million kids still die each year before reaching their fifth birthday. Another two million are stillborn. Virtually all of these deaths occur in low- and middle-income countries—and every single one is a tragedy that devastates families and entire communities. My blog post from two years ago told the first part of this story—explaining what we know about child mortality and what we did to cut it in half once before. This is part two: how we can cut child mortality in half again, to below three million deaths a year by 2040. The main reason I believe we can do this is because we already have most of the tools we need. As we shared in last year’s Goalkeepers Report, “Researchers have learned more about the health of mothers and babies over the past 10 years than they did in the century before that.” While continued innovation is always necessary, we currently have the know-how to save millions of lives—it’s a matter of putting it to use and making sure it reaches the children who need it most. That begins before children even take their first breaths. It begins with mothers. When a mother dies during childbirth, her child has a more than 63 percent chance of dying before their first birthday. To save those kids’ lives—and so many others by 2040—we need to focus on keeping women healthy before and throughout pregnancy, so they can deliver and raise healthy children. Stop women from bleeding to death after childbirth Around the world, postpartum hemorrhage (PPH)—defined by the WHO as losing more than half a liter of blood within 24 hours of childbirth—is the primary cause of maternal mortality. Often, it isn’t caught until it’s too late, because it’s hard to know how much blood loss is too much. But with a low-cost tool called a calibrated obstetric drape and a trained birth attendant monitoring it, blood loss can be accurately measured in real time. By bundling five interventions that stop the bleeding and administering them simultaneously rather than sequentially—an approach known as E-MOTIVE—healthcare workers can slash cases of severe bleeding by 60 percent. By screening for and treating anemia, a common cause of PPH, during pregnancy, the world can prevent some PPH cases entirely. Prevent life-threatening infections during labor Sepsis—a life-threatening condition in which the immune system overreacts to an infection, causing widespread inflammation and organ damage—is another common cause of maternal mortality. In the U.S., it’s responsible for 23 percent of cases. But researchers have recently discovered that azithromycin, one of the world’s most common antibiotics, can reduce sepsis cases by a third when given preventatively. This discovery will be lifesaving for mothers—and therefore babies—especially in places where many women give birth at home, in conditions that aren’t necessarily sterile. Speed up the development of babies’ lungs When babies are born pre-term, before 37 weeks of pregnancy, their organs are still under-developed—especially the lungs, one of the last organs to finish growing inside the womb. That leaves these babies vulnerable to a whole host of potentially fatal complications. But now, if doctors learn a mother is at risk of going into pre-term labor, they can prescribe her antenatal corticosteroids that help her baby’s lungs grow as much as they would over a few weeks—in just a few days. Fight malnutrition before and after birth Without a healthy microbiome—the universe of bacteria inside the gut—babies struggle to absorb the nutrients in breast milk no matter how much they’re fed. That malabsorption is doubly destructive because it can lead to malnutrition, which can leave babies more susceptible to contracting and dying from pneumonia. While experts used to believe that malnutrition could only be treated at around six months—once a baby starts eating solid foods—we now know that the microbiomes of mothers and babies are connected. That means micronutrient supplements can be given to pregnant women; when they are, babies gain an additional 5 grams of weight each day during the late stages of pregnancy and are more likely to be born with a healthy gut. And when a baby is born underweight or pre-term, probiotic powders that include bifidobacteria can be added to breast milk to improve their digestive system, help them absorb nutrients, and reduce their risk of contracting severe infections and dying. The focus, with each of these interventions, is on the beginning of a newborn baby’s life (and the lead-up to it). Why? Because half of all deaths of children under five occur in the first 28 days. If a baby is born healthy and survives that first month, the odds increase dramatically that they will live to see their fifth birthday—and then onto adulthood. Making this happen will require renewed investments by governments and organizations around the world to get these life-saving interventions out to the people and places where they’re so sorely needed. But it doesn’t require much new invention. Again: The solutions to cut child mortality in half again already exist. (And they’re all low-cost.) Of course, there’s still much more to do to eliminate preventable deaths of children altogether. We need to continue improving sanitation and increasing access to clean drinking water around the world. We need to develop a vaccine for HIV and next-generation malaria vaccines to really stop them in their tracks; as we saw over the last 30 years, diseases with effective vaccines declined much faster than those we try to control without them. We also need to ramp up vaccine distribution efforts, with an emphasis on reaching the 60 million “zero-dose” kids in lower-income countries who’ve never received a single immunization and now make up half of all childhood deaths from diseases with effective vaccines These numbers spiked during the pandemic, when routine immunizations were disrupted and vaccine misinformation surged. Fortunately, Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance—which has helped vaccinate over 981 million children in the world’s poorest countries since 2000—is working around the clock to reach these kids. The organization will be having its next replenishment cycle soon, and the more money raised, the more lives saved. I often say that giving to Gavi is the best investment I’ve ever made. None of this work is easily accomplished. Most goals worth achieving aren’t, though, especially one as important as this. But with the right commitment, I think preventable child deaths will one day be as unimaginable to us as life without computers. And in the not-too-distant future, a world where all children have the same chance to survive and thrive—no matter where they’re born—will become reality, too. ONE of the notable All Progressives Congress, APC Governorship Aspirants in the party's primary election, Senator Jimoh Ibrahim has called for outright cancellation of the election held on April 20, 2024 across the state. Jimoh in a Press Statement gave five grounds why the election should be cancelled and fresh election conducted. Senator Ibrahim on his part, hinged his appeal for cancellation of the election on four grounds, including non-compliance with the rules, non-provision of electoral materials, non-accreditation of agents and gross misconduct. “This is an appeal to your committee to cancel the Primary election held in Ondo state on 20th April 2024 on the ground that there was no election in the 203 wards, and this is evidenced from the many petitions before your committee as captured on the grounds below. “Ground One, non-compliance with your rules, I paid the sum of N100m for the validation of over 40 thousand party members and those members were not allowed to be revalidated across Ondo State, this was because no voters register was made available in the wards to which members could be validated. “On ground two no provision of electoral materials electoral materials were provided for the conduct of the election, the local government electoral officials were kept in the hotel during the period of the election for several hours and only result sheets were given to them. The ward electoral officers were provided by one of the aspirants, Lucky Ayedatiwa. “Ground three non-accreditation of agents. My agents were not accredited in all the wards, and they did not sign the election result sheet since none was made available to them. “The fourth ground is on gross misconduct. I received in my house in the village, Igbotako at 7 pm on the day of election the local government returning officer and members of his committee. They informed me that they were in my house to capture my vote but I sent them away since my house is not a polling venue. The returning officer said he was instructed from above. “Based on the four grounds stated above, the election should be cancelled and re-conducted immediately,” Senator Ibrahim said. The Minister of State for Defence Bello Matawalle and the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, like Josef Onoh condemned the position of NEF regretting supporting Tinubu's presidency in 2023 election and for saying it will withdraw its support in 2027 but have now chicken out from their earlier stance. It is good to note that the trio Matawalle, Ribadu and Onoh are unrepentant and diehard supporters of Tinubu's administration and this they have not hidden from public domain unlike others who are still sitting on the fence who are difficult to know where they stand. At one time or the other, Matawalle has received attacks as a result of his opposition to the stand of the NEF calling them a 'burden' and 'paperweight' that do not represent the voice or interest of the North. Onoh stands out for hitting the NEF where it matters most that actually forced them to make a public statement renouncing their earlier position on Tinubu's administration. THE Northern Elders Forum, NEF, in twist of events finally reacted to the attacks on it for withdrawing its support for President Bola Tinubu's administration and vowing not to vote him in 2027 Presidential elections. NEF in their reaction, bowed and denied that Tinubu has not done anything in the North to warrant his Second Term in office, this was after Dr. Josef Onoh took upon himself to itemize remarkable achievements and strategic appointments Tinubu made in the North at the expense of the Southeast. Onoh equally mentioned how elites in the North are adverse to the development of the region by not giving any attention and support to the plight of the Almajiris by denying them quality education to perpetuate themselves in power. "There is so much to say but so little said, but if clearly these Northern Elders regret voting for Tinubu who clearly elevated their sons and daughters politically to the detriment of my South East region then it's clear and obvious they hate the progress of the North and don't speak for the North rather their voices and regrets belong "in the other room" and have no place or significance in 2027." - said Onoh. In its reaction, the Northern Elders Forum, NEF distanced from the statement credited to it that it regretted voting Tinubu as the President. The statement reads: “The attention of NEF has been drawn to a statement credited to the Forum by media – that the North regrets voting for President Bola Tinubu. “NEF wishes to distance itself from the statement as it did not emanate from the Forum as it is the opinion of the person in his personal capacity and not that of NEF. “Thus, the statement credited to NEF does not reflect the position of the Forum as it has never sat and assessed performance or non-performance of Tinubu administration. “Similarly, NEF has never discussed, in any time, the politics of 2027 nor has it deliberated on who to support or not to support on such issues. “The NEF considers it too early to be engaged in such distractions when NEF, like most Nigerians, are demanding good governance and dividends of democracy. “NEF, for now prefers to, focus on advocating for what improves the Northern Region and Nigeria as a whole. “The NEF charges leaders to always verify and authenticate information and treat issues within their specific contexts before making public pronouncement.” When contacted, the former President Tinubu’s Southeast Spokesman and current Chairman of Forum of Former Members of Enugu State House of Assembly (FOF-MENHA), Dr. Josef Onoh said, politics aside, he will always hold the Northern Elders in highest esteem because they are our elders. "Although, when elders delve into politics they seemed to loose their respects but that does not mean the Northern Elders are not held in the highest esteem. In every organization there maybe few disgruntled elements that does not translate that all of them are disgruntled." Onoh expressed his reservations on the protests of NEF against alleged killings of cows in the southeast. He condemned it in its entirety the allegations of killings of cows by Eastern Security Networks, ESN. He called on the Chairman of Ohanaeze, Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu who is a pan-Nigerian to meet with the Northern Elders to put a lasting solution to the lingering crisis among the major ethnic nationalities including the Afenifere in the Southwest over cattle attacks on farmlands and killings of farmers by the cattle rearers. "They should map out strategies and pathways to sustain peace in Nigeria", Onoh said. Onoh added that Southeast have also been complaining about gross damages done to their farms by the cattles, despite this, our elders whom I know meant well for the unity and peace of Nigeria should come together to foster togetherness for the sake of generations yet unborn.
