I cannot expect less from this government than a mere name change which is the least of our national problem. I wonder what the government was thinking before concluding that UNILAG be renamed after MKO Abiola who paid the supreme price for the democracy we all now enjoy.

This is about the 2nd or 3rd civilian administration after the return of democracy in our beloved country and the past two administrations never thought it right to rename UNILAG after Abiola, its either they were not thinking right or perhaps the current government is doing the wrong thing, whichever way we look at it, something is wrong somewhere.

Imagine a situation whereby Aso Rock is renamed MKO Rock or Abiola Rock just to show those who annulled the election that though MKO never actualised his mandate but the seat of power is renamed after him, that would have been more honourable than using UNILAG.


UNILAG is brand that is built, created and nurtured by the unmatched effort of well meaning Nigerians thereby bringing it to the status it attained today. The institution receives donations from individuals and corporate organisations for which one may ask if MKO ever had any physical structure as a donation to the school. The school should have been renamed after such individual who must have donated all his life savings and investment to the school rather than an individual who fought for the entire country.

And for those clamouring for name change to remain, I have one word for you: it either you were declined admission or you never crossed over the cut off mark to be admitted as a student of UNILAG.

I can only use Evan Enwerem University (Imo State University) as a case study which did not stand the test of time.

I have come to realise that to become a person of value in this country u really have to do a little things that will positively touch lives of every demanding Nigerians.
