Local institutional investors are buying because some stock valuations are super attractive . However , they must be ready to hold for a long period as they are buying from foreign institutional investors who are not tired of selling as they just want out . Implication is we won't see high prices soon until they (foreign investors ) decide to come back . However if you are fine with the dividends by all means go ahead and do as you please. The only problem is at the end of next year when local institutional investors fund managers are supposed to report they gains for the year, we might witness them selling off . Its like when brokers decide to flood the market with stocks , you are on your own . for those who want to own the companies like their own, I will say start buying in tranches.if you are there for JIJO , sorry the market is not for you
but the volumes traded this while are not much considering the foreign portfolio holdings, can recall the sale about 86, 000 units of dangcem moving its price 4% down, thanks for your response as I am learning

These are trying times for investors. The signals are not good and its not peculiar to Nigeria alone . Prices of equity may have come down significantly but that does not mean you should catch a falling knife. Yields of most equities are very attractive but how long are you prepared to hold? Its not easy to time the market but what hope and direction does the nation give you to believe things will become normal in the next one year? people may have bought GTB at 13 yesterday but it could fall to 7 and the implication is you could have bought up to double the shares you bought at 13.
The 400 richest people have lost $305 billion from their combined net worth this month as global equities tumbled for the worst start to a year on record as concern mounts that global growth is faltering . The Dow industrials lost almost 400 points in Yesterday’s selloff, and investors snatched up bonds anew, sending 10-year Treasury yields briefly below 2% for the first time since October.
fresh lows in oil prices, stumbling Chinese stocks and weak U.S. economic data shows all is not well with financial markets worldwide. I do not see where the hope is for Nigeria considering the fact that we can't even solve our little problems
This may not appeal to everyone but cut your losses and keep your cash for the time being and you will be happy for it . Those who bought first bank at N8.00 thought they were making a killing . they could have bought 3 times more shares now. For dividend hunters, your N2.00 dividend of 2014 will be better than your N4.00 dividend in 2016 .
please check this write up and see exactly where the market is going . The sell off is very far from over . Its a very simple explanation of what is going on . if you need clarity , post your questions

http://www.nigeriaretailinvestors.com/index.php/investor-forum/the-trading-room-home-of-technical-analysis/292-is-the-world-stock-market-crashing

I am not a prophet of doom and I know a lot of us are too emotional when it comes to investments but I will advise that you listen to wise counsel.
One more thing , there is a certain 'audacious" Oil company who cannot survive with oil prices below $32 dollars. The implication is that company is going to wind down. I have sounded this warning ages ago and people criticized me . Even people made money from Nospecto and even a dead clock can be right 2 times in a day .
The question of how to navigate the market at times like this is to do nothing .However its very difficult to do nothing especially when you have cash.
Prices might be low but it does not mean equities are relatively cheap
Thread carefully brethren
my question is who is buying now?

It is interesting how people very easily go with the bandwagon of whatever mainstream media chooses to propagate from time to time. I conclude that maybe they reckon it's fashionable or it is easier because it requires less brain work on their part. Every Tayo, Yakubu and Emeka is talking about how the dollar is rising at a " dizzying rate. A good number of these people have never had any interaction with the foreign exchange market before. Nothing has changed significantly since 2013 in that local "buckar" where they buy a plate of eba for ₦150. Those pulling their hairs out are the lazy traders who simply are on the look out for the next fad to import and dump in the Nigerian market. Those willing to roll up their sleeves and work are relishing the opportunity. At the end of this all there will be a transfer of wealth from the fellas stuck in the old ways to the hardworking who are the embodiment of the can do spirit. A nation's locals must create and sustain value needed by itself and other nations to make the faintest attempt at being economically sound - Passersby (SMN)

We really don't care if the prices go up or down or hover in the same region.
If prices go down we BUY; if it goes down more we BUY MORE.
If prices go up we SELL; if it goes up more we SELL MORE.
If prices linger we HOLD; if it lingers further we HOLD FURTHER.

Invest in fundamentally sound stocks that give you a desired percentage return in Dividend/Earnings and reap dividends/earnings when prices linger.

Follow this as you build your portfolio and you are on your sure way to WEALTH.

Oil is really taking a beating now, and Gas is already on it's way up. Oando should be able to leverage up on Gas and power, their CNG biz too seems to be smiling these days.
I'd expect them to divest some of their crude assets but who ever knows with Oando? Still wondering the sense in that Conoco Phillips buy-over.
what of this

I think the CBN should look for better and more effective ways to go about these sanctions. Why not sanction the board/ or directors or the persons directly responsible for these breaches rather than sanction a publicly quoted company whose ordinary shares holders become the ultimate losers. As it stands, the big ogas who took this decision will collect all their emoluments, the fine will be paid by the investing public, and the ordinary shares held by them will be battered.
and they are quick to pay

Myjoy084 good day .are you not my brother any more? forget the past come out lets go on thats business .many of them that is calling you any thing they like have stocks with japaul oil, daar, bank phb, afribank e.t.c if they think they are good more than you why cant they sell befor the stocks die or are the told them to buy it that time? oando have not die just want to drop some people, oando is going hi okomu oil and fo is example .
My very good friend, Sir Born, it is very clear that
emotions are running high and people are very angry
with the results presented by Oando because there hard
earned money are involved. I will take responsibilities
concerning the misrepresentation and
miscommunication of my post on Oando's optimism or
confidence as it was stated by many. One thing is very
certain, something certain unethical, conscienceless,
ungodly, and inhumane happened along the road (And
this would be made clear as time goes on). Don't be
surprised if you see some top Oando management
resigning their position (Plz don't quote me). As I said,
Myjoy08' had no intention of misleading anyone
because I have a conscience to defend but want the
BEST for everyone. Even one Oga stated here that I
haven't bought stock in my life, well u're wrong about
that. We are not here to flex muscle or brag with our
nets-worth but I can assure you that Millions of Naira
are loaded in stock with the grace of God. As I always
stated in my post that your due diligence matter and I
wouldn't stop saying that. In all, am SORRY once again
and BNSITLs' can move forward with other opportunities
awaiting us. God bless everyone! God bless our
struggles!! God bless BNSITL!!! God bless Nigeria!!! It is

FBNH tops the list with about N46.6 billion representing a 249% rise in impairment charge year on year.

In fact, their impairment charge alone accounts for about half of what the Tier 1 banks incurred combined.

UBA and Zenith also saw impairments rise 103% and 99% respectively. Apart from Tier 1 banks we also observed that some Tier 2 banks equally recorded significant growth in impairment charges.

Ecobank for example took a charge of N34.6 billion (2014: N23.4b) whilst Diamond Bank took a charge of N19.4 billion (2014: N14.6billion and Skye Bank N6.4 billion (2014: N7.5billion).

Bad bad loans
Industry sources inform Nairametrics that the loans could actually be higher than currently stated as most banks are yet to understand the full recoverable value of their loans.

For example, some of the loans given to Oil and Gas companies are not being adequately serviced with many falling behind on loan repayment obligations.

Some Banks may also have been creative by restructuring those loans into longer term loans thus deferring the evil day.
The results of other non-financial institutions also buttresses this view. Cash balances of most consumer goods and oil and gas companies are wearing thin, with many of them running on overdrafts to stay liquid.

The Securities and Exchange Commission, Nigeria Stock Exchange and Pension Commission, should be please come to the aid of shareholders by making sure that Corporate governance becomes the other of the day in Corporate Nigeria. Pension Fund Administrators have invested in some of the companies that have issues with Corporate governance. PENCOM should make sure that Pension Fund Administrators have a representative on the boards of companies where they have invested workers fund in. We do not want a situation whereby workers and pensioners retirement funds will be in jeopardy.
We need a culture of good corporate governance in all the business organisations in Nigeria. Therefore individual and institutional investors should make sure that the activities of our managers and directors are guided by the principles of corporate governance, which are listed below.
• Rights of shareholders and equitable treatment of shareholders.
• Having the interests of the stakeholders e.g. employees, investors, suppliers, creditors, local communities, customers and policy makers.
• Roles and responsibilities of the board.
• Integrity and ethical behaviour by management.
• Disclosure and transparency.
When our managers and leaders are guided by these principles, things will truly change for the better in Corporate Nigeria, Stock Exchange and the nation as a whole.
