As at 2016:
Champions of the 2015/16 Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) season stand to win N40m from the Merit Award of the League Management Company (LMC). Rangers International of Enugu and Rivers United of Port Harcourt are the two clubs in contention for the big prize money from a total of N200m pool set aside by the LMC as reward for final position on the league table at the end of the season on Sunday.
Last season, the highest payout from the Merit Award which went to Enyimba International was N30m from a total pool of N150m and this year’s figure of N200m represents an increase of 25%. The Merit Award pool has been witnessing an annual progression from N50m in 2012/13 to N75m in 2013/14 season and now N200m. The top three Clubs on the final table usually received the chunk of the Merit Award which supports the clubs financially in their preparation for the CAF Club competitions the next season.
According to figures released by the LMC, the champions would have received a minimum of N90m in all direct payments for the 2016 season including the Basic Award which comprises of pool of funds shared equally amongst all the 20 participating clubs, the Merit award paid to clubs based on their final position on the table, the Football development and the Bonus award which is paid to clubs based on performances including incentives for improving match attendance, away wins/draw, fielding players under the age of 18 and hosting live broadcast matches.
The lowest placed team in the NPFL this season would thus have received a upto N55m in direct payments from the LMC from all payment Centres.
A statement from the LMC explained that “in addition to the direct payments clubs do also benefit from other indirect payments such as free registration of players and officials, free insurance, payment of match officials’ indemnities and hotel accommodation as well as sponsored seminars and other engagements funded by the LMC”.
Rangers are three points ahead of Rivers United with the Flying Antelopes hosting El-Kanemi Warriors at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium now called The Cathedral by Enugu fans needing a point to guarantee the title while Rivers United go hunting for three points in Uyo against Akwa United. The Port Harcourt side will seek to win big while hoping that Rangers will falter against their visitors. |

Then players earned less than #100k, you can check your records. Now NPFL players earn between #80k (minimum) to #700k. On average, players earn around #150k. I think Kano pillars have the highest number of players earning between #300k and #700k. League winner earn between #50M and #100M, I think it's 20M for cup now, not so sure, then it was #10m for the league and #5m for cup. Participating in the league now earns you #10M, you get #500k for away win and I think you get some money for away goals too. The money in the league now has tripled. @Getting another Job, do you like what is currently happening to Enyimba and have you had time to discuss with Anyasi? Icon4s: @ bolded, I got another job.
Taking Enyimba as a model then, the club was by far the highest paying club .A player moving to Enyimba was like a player moving to North Africa or South African League. The club had some national team quality players: Vincent Enyeama, Dele Aiyenugba, Obinna Nwanneri, Onyekachi Okonkwo were Super Eagles players. Muri Ogunbiyi and Joetex Fringpong played for Benin and Ghana respectively.
I don't know how much the current league price is now so I cant compare it with what it was then.
Enyimba, really made money from gate takings and sponsorship deals. All Enyimba's local and Champions league games were played on Sundays 4pm. We always recorded a full house especially during continental matches. Enyimba's jerseys were also popularly worn amongst the locals. And they kept upgrading with each change of the Jeyseys.
Because there were few recreation centers in Aba then, the Enyimba stadium was a choice as young people took their wives and girl friends to go see Vincent Enyeama and co. It was always a carnival every weekend there was a game. I was based in Akwa-Ibom but I usually spent my weekends in Aba.
It was not all about price money as after-all only one club wins it.
Though the government was a major sponsor, the club's management also raised money from gate takings, sponsorship deals, sale of jerseys, lease of the stadium for other non-football function among others |

8 goals and 9 assists, hmm encouraging but who is he likely to displace? TheSuperNerd: Loooolll.... hollup there Sir... it is not goals, goals and goals ooooo.... hahahahahahahahaha...
It is goals and assists...... 8 goals and 9 assists in 23 games for Al Ahly. Cool stats shaa...
Let me help you with your question... Ajayi will not replace any of Ighalo, Iheanacho, Iwobi, VicMoses, S.Moses and A.Musa... you see these six names I just reeled out... they are all Russia-bound. Take it or leave it. But me I know. And time will vindicate this under the condition that they all stay fit and have no injuries to knock them out of the WC.
If Rohr will take Ajayi to the WC ehn... it won't be at the expense of those six guys upfront. It would be at the expense of a midfielder. Meaning Rohr will have to take Five midfielders and Seven Forwards to the mundial if Ajayi must be on the plane if he pulls off near earth-shaking performances in the friendlies.
And I see that as something that may not happen because The players ahead of Ajayi ehn... will make Rohr start him from the bench and Ajayi is not high in quality compared to those six guys upfront. #Fact But he is a consistent performer for Al Ahly and uses his physical attributes to good effects.
In all time will tell.... but don't get your hopes up much on Ajayi. Let him be the one to make us go Wow!!! because I too have watched him play recently and honestly, he will have to do much more to make a strong case to be on that final plane to Russia. |

Most of the guys that left our league earn less than $10k per month. Most end up in unknown leagues. Not all but most. I'm not saying exceptional players shouldn't leave if the option is better, all I am saying is, its bad for every Tim, dick and Harry leaving the league. Who then will build the league if all the best leave? I believe you got my point now? Make we discuss list jare. Joebie: Oga even $80k per week could be a stepping stone. How many goals has he scored so far? Watched him 3 times this year but no goal from him. aadvark: The long awaited friendly list is out, Junior Ajayi of Egypt's Al Ahly gets invite, but what do we expect? What exactly does Ajayi bring to the Eagles front line? His record in his club says its goals, goals and goals.
Ajayi has proven to be very prolific for his club this season, practically tearing through teams. His proficiency in front of goal will be of value to the Eagles as they hope for a strong outing at the world cup.
But as I type this, one question nags my mind. If he performs well in the friendlies, as I have a hunch he will, who will be dropped from the Eagles attack to accommodate him? The eagles attack is one position that is star studded, with names like Victor Moses, Alex Iwobi, Simon Moses, Kelechi Iheanacho, Ahmed Musa and Odion Ighalo. So who will take the fall?
It's easy to point to Odion Ighalo, whose goal return has not been very impressive for the Eagles. Ajayi on the other hand knows how to put the ball in the net. But for a second, let's put on our analytical glasses.
The eagles usually play a 4-3-3formation with one top striker who is expected to not just score goals but also offer good hold up play. This Odion Ighalo does excellently, as we saw in the double header with Cameroon in the WC qualifiers. He can also drift to either wing and take on a man successfully, offering the sort of service that Real Madrid's Benzema does to his team. So even tho he doesn't score much, he is some sort of foil for the team, as his service makes it easy for various players to pop up with the goals.
Now can Ajayi offer that apart from the goals? The truth is that, if he provides decent enough hold up play in addition to goals, then I will be very sorry for Ighalo.
But hey, the friendlies are here, the stage is set, and a good performance from the Egypt-based goal machine might just worsen Rohr's headache. I for my part shall be on hand to hand him some Emzor paracetamol, lol. |

I mean why did you stop getting involved with Enyimba? Was there money in the league then? How much was the league winner getting then? How much were players being paid then? If anything, its now we have more money in the league. What league winners get now is 10 times higher than then. By now, Enyimba should have become a community or private club looking at all they have achieved, how come Enyimba is still depending on state government? All the monies earned via international cups, what was done with it? They sold alot of players for good money then, Enyeama, Aiyenugba, Ogunbiyi etc.. Enyimba is a bad model to copy meen. Icon4s: Stop? Did I say I have stopped being an Enyimba fan? I still watched some of Enyimba's games on DSTV up till last season and still went to watch one of their FA cup games(which they even lost) about 2 years ago.
The difference between then and now is we had a football loving governor then who budgeted so much on Enyimba. The Enyimba international stadium had one of the best natural pitches in the country then. Many corporate bodies were ready to associate with the club due to its successes. Business was good at Enyimba FC.
Not now any longer.

Great, now we are getting there. What made you stop? Enyimba is no longer Enyimba even though Anyasi is still the chairman. Have you tried looking into why Enyimba is in the decline? Icon4s: My brother, I don't think you know how close I am to the corridors of those that run football in Nigeria. Let's leave it there.
I am a fan of Enyimba FC of Aba. Not just that, during Enyimba's dominance from 2003 to 2005, I was a close associate to Enyimba chairman Felix Anyasi Agu.
Enyimba is my home town club.
I was in Tunis to watch Enyimba overcome Esparance in 2005, at the semi-final, second leg of CAF champions league. I was involved in the mobilization of Aba traders to go watch the final of that same 2005 CAF champions league final against Austin Ejide's Etoile Du Sahel in Abuja. Orji Uzor Kalu provided buses.
We had a governor that was ready to spend big on the club. Enyimba had the money to buy the best players domiciled in Nigeria. We bought players from neighbouring Countries.
We were too strong for the rest of Africa.
Due to my knowledge of the game Felix Anyasi Agu encouraged me to go for coaching training. Which I did. But I got something better doing not long after that.
I only analyse football on TV and radio( a couple of years back though) . Notably DST Warri and Vibes FM Benin. I also made presentations to Manu and Amuneke's boys of 2013. Ndidi, Iheanacho, Awoniyi, the Nwakalis, Yahaya were some of the kids in that class.
So oga, I would not say more than that. |

When we were younger, we come together as community guys, we organise tournaments, contribute money, then we share the winnings based on performance. If private sectors are expecting the government to organise the league for them, then na long thing. Most leagues in the world are in private hands with h government acting as watchdogs. If they Are waiting for evidence that it's profitable, it won't come. We have the crowd We have the passion We have the lands We have the awareness. What else is needed by private sectors? Obaseki tried his lot, came in Irabor and now Shehu. LMC is a private body, let primate entity work with them, raise the standard by pumping in money. The media houses are there, they can contact the government so as to reduce the easy access to foreign league. We Nigerians are normally lazy when it comes to thinking so we tend to grab the easiest thing available. asha80: well maybe private sector has not seen any evidence that would be able to make money in it (maybe absence of clear cut policy by nfa or nff) |

The earlier we grab this, the better so no one should expect the best from the league nor should we bereate a league we made so. I have people in the league. Some of those who left ended up in oblivion. Some Nigerian players playing in the league have achieved more than some who left for relatively unknown countries/league/club. There is a particular one that went to Iran, up till now he's struggling badly, some make it but most don't. Sir I put it to you that Nigerians patronised the league then because we had no other options. There was no way to access foreign leagues on TV so the available became the toast of town. That to me is the major reason we had crowds then but not the only reason. The other reasons you gave counted too. asha80: now on the bolded in the 80s i am quite sure nigerians patronized and fervently watched nigerian league..at least i remember the leventis, abiola babes, ranchers bees and iwuanyanwu nationale rivalries.. the ansahs, john bensons, wole odegbamis, adeolu adekolas, abubakar balarabes, ayo ogunlana, tajudeen oyekanmi, amokachi, uwakwe eke, mike obi, chike arisa, justus ewendu, joe ashinze, chimezie nwanaga, friday ekpo, bode williams, yekini, ben nwosu..the followership started reducing from the early 90s becasue of falling standards and birth of cable tv..maybe the fa should work on that falling standards angle..as for private ownership issue i have always believed that the scenario where clubs are run by govt should be stopped . But you know this won't stop unless private individuals take charge? Governments are ready to sell (it reduces burden) if buyers approach them. |

There are alot you can do in person and thank God you listed some of them. Additionally, if you have a club you support in the league, go and meet the people in charge, give them your recommendation and then follow through, if that's not enough, get other supporters together, go in group and have these recommendations pushed. Except you are dealing with demons, they will surely obliged as long as the recommendations are feasible. If those in charge are incalcitated, move up to the state. Once you're able to achieve this at your own club, others will copy. Kano pillars is what it is today because the followers engaeged those in charge, those in charge can't take some decisions without putting the followers in mind. There is alot we can do in person. Sir, can I ask you what you would want a club you support look like? Let's start from there. Icon4s: What I have tried doing in Person to correct the anomalies in the league?
Please let us be realistic in making certain comments
"In person" there is little or nothing you can do when you are not part of a system.
Asides going to match venues to render support, watch games on TV and maybe buy their jerseys, there is virtually nothing else you can do if you are not part of the clubs' administration or state or national football governing body. As an outsider, the best you can do is to raise critical issues and bring them to the awareness of those in the "system". Which is what we are doing here. That is not even a guarantee that it will change anything because if you like write 1million recommendations and proposals if those in authority chose to pay a deaf ear there is nothing you can do about it.
Nobody should be called a hater for critiquing a failing system pleeaasse. |

Brazilian league is followed by its citizens, they patronise the league, not all their best leave, in fact what they do most of the time is to do a win win transaction. You sign my players but must allow the players stay in the league for some certain seasons before leaving. You should know this. There is money in the Brazilian league too because alot of the clubs are privately owned even though it's not as rich as some European leagues. asha80: brazillian and argentine league scout and develop home talents..does not stop the talents from going abroad even early since financially they cannot compete with european teams..doesnt stop their leagues from being good leagues. As for the Argentine league, they enjoy enough patronage even though they don't have money that much. Their stadiums always filled up. When the best leave the league, they still come home to retire. Both of these league have home patronage and citizens supporting the league unlike the NPFL. |

tbaba1234: Now, that the league is not yet there. Let players go and improve themselves and earn money doing so.
The clubs should have feeder teams where trained coaches groom talents early. That way, they do not have to argue with a player about his age.
Messi joined Barca as a child and his talent was developed. Do you know how many messis/ronaldos/neymars have wasted on the streets of Nigeria. Clubs should scout for young players and stop presenting uncles as 18 year olds. Till? So that you can then encourage them to leave again? The league should scout 18 years old and build them, then let them leave again, then start the cycle all over again? I don hear you sir. |

How can their salaries be up to that of North Africa when the league doesn't have sponsors nor private owners like their counterparts? How many private owners do we have in the league? We have stinkingly rich Nigerians everywhere, yet only few look the way of the league. Most don't want to plant, all want to reap. Solution is what we need not berating. We all know what is not in the league, how to get these things into the league is the koko, then acting on them. Which of the NPFL do you support or have ever contacted to chip in ideas and offer? EPL is what it is because the English people first of all took it as their own before foreigners came in. In the days of kick and follow, the English fans never neglected it, they kept watching their kick and follow until it grew. The citizens grew it. For NPFL to grow, the citizens must be ready to grow it. Angels won't come and until then, don't expect magic. Encourage those who are trying to right the wrong. Buy tickets for those in Nigeria who wants to go watch league matches so that money would be available for clubs to run their affairs. We have some privately owned clubs in Nigeria, buy tickets for random people so they can go see the matches. Without money in the league, there is no way players will earn high. Most times I go for live matches, I take some people along, pay their tickets, I don't get to pay to enter match Venues. I also encourage my relatives to go watch matches... Currently, Kano pillars pay the highest amount of salaries, hence the reason they get to keep their best for seasons. Check their stands every match days, always filled up because the fans have taken the club to be theirs. Went to watch pillars vs MFM, the stadium was filled to capacity at Agege, guess what? Kano pillar's fans were more than the home crowd to the extent that pillars started dashing MFM fans jerseys lol. Let's act if we want the league to grow. Ticket is just #500 for CCL match (regular) and #200/#300 for league matches. Sponsor crowds to match Venues, the money is what is needed to grow the league! tbaba1234: If you have a player in the Nigerian league today, that has the potential to become a neymar, would you let that player stay in Nigeria?
Do you think he will develop to a level where Barca can come and buy him?
The structures needed to help a player reach their best level is simple not available.
The coaches are not there. The facilities are not there.
Your best players will not just stay in Nigeria for nothing. You have to be offering something.
If a talented player knows that Nigeria has the best coaching in Africa, he might be willing to develop under great coaches before going abroad.
If our salaries are comparable to the north Africans, more players will stay home.
You can not be offering nothing and asking players to stay. |
