We later applied about 24 bags of npk fertilizer

We also sprayed 24d all the farms. This kills broadleaf weeds

This is usually not a problem with timely herbicide application. But due to drought, we sprayed 4 weeks after planting when the rain finally came. This was a huge setback for us because later on the weed became difficult to control.

1 month later
-post emergence herbicide spraying-
this is usually sprayed in about 2-3 weeks after emergence of rice and possibly weed. Our farm was especially stubborn. After all the spraying, alot of weed showed up.

We had machanical defficulties and could not finish second harrow immediately. But we were able to finish that days later.

Immediately after the Harrow, i hired about 7 people to spray the next pre emergence herbicide - pendimethaline. This herbicide kills the very seed of the weed, thus delaying it's recovery and giving the rice opportunity to dominate.

Agriculture / Re: My Adventure Into Rice Farming (Photos and videos) by sonofjos(m): 9:38pm On Jan 21, 2021
For this farm we carried out double tractor operations
The first Harrow work was done before 5 bags of rice was broadcasted.

We started by spraying the same glyphosate pre emergence 5 days before tractor work.

After tractor harrowing, I hired 3 motor bikes and about 13 guys for the spraying of the the first round of glyphosate, a pre-emergence herbicide (weed killing solution)

pictures below are the guys preparing to leave for the farm.

Broadcasting of rice is the first step.
This farm is about 11 hecters so we came with about 7 120kg bags.
for this, I hired about 10 people to broadcast.

Planting of the deepwater rice

As stated earlier, we started late because of the pandemic lockdowns. I was trapped at Jos and could not come and have some of the farm properly cleared by cutting down trees. But the guy who gave us the farmland convinced me to just cultivate in-between the trees. (A decision I later discovered was a costly mistake)

Agriculture / Re: My Adventure Into Rice Farming (Photos and videos) by sonofjos(m): 9:20pm On Jan 21, 2021
This is a rice producing area where you see thousands of hecters of rice fields that will stretch your view

I've been cultivating 2 types of rice: Upland and the Deep water rice (swamp rice which is locally called biruwa).

Before the last farming season, I cultivated about 2 farmlands of upland rice at Wase local government of Plateau State and I tried the deep water or swamp rice at Ibi, Taraba State. It was successful was so the last season I expanded to 5 rice farms:

Farm 1 (upland) 7 hecters
Farm 2 (deep water rice) 6 hecters
Farm 3 (deep water rice) 5.5 hecters
Farm 4 (deep water rice) 9.5 hecters
Farm 5 (deep water rice) 11 hecters

Because of the Corona pandemic, I couldn't personally go and supervise the cultivation of the first 3 farms. I was giving directives to the workers from home. I was only able to go there for the upland rice and the last deepwater rice.
So the report and media content I'll be sharing here are basically from those two farms.

Greetings friends,

1. I acknowledge that you may find many grammatical, spellings and related errors. For those i apologize.

Sorry, I was supposed to have started this post since the beginning of the last farming season but because of other engagements, and I was always on the move and the community where my farms are located has zero internet connection. Because of these, I decided to wait till the end of the last farming season before doing this.

So, the government has been encouraging us the youth to go to the farm. I decided to try my hand to see what God will do for me.

I chose commercial rice farming as the main crop to cultivate.
I am a Jos guy but I went to Ibi local government of Taraba State for the farms. I chose this location because it's a hub of the produce.

I am basically giving a brief highlights of the farming venture

At its peak last year, rice sold for more than N35000. It had never been this good for Nigerian rice farmers.

When venturing into rice farming, it's important you adequately prepare to finance from beginning to end.
If not, the cost of harvest, which is usually very high, will make you sell a large parentage of rice to finance it. And selling rice at that point is a loss. You never get good prices.

I am not an agriculturalist, I am just a normal guy who ventured into farming and I am still learning but the experience I've gathered is priceless.

My verdict is that rice farming is lucrative
However, it involves alot of investment and risks. But almost always profitable at the end.

I suffered alot of setbacks these two years but thank God I came out alright.

I am embarking on more daring expansions this season, I am in the process of engaging some investors to finance it.

Nairaland is like a family to me. It took me alot of time to put this report for you guys. Pls Pray that the Lord will bless my hussle in Jesus name

This is just a summary
I will be glad to answer any questions. Just be patient because I will do so at my pace. Thanks

Do you think they will ever move this to front page? Not on your next salary!
It's only when the fake ones fumble or when they catch a pastor doing something bad that you'll see them forward it to the front page with the speed of Hussain bolts.
To whom it may concern, beware of the judgement of God!

I was just thinking of this passage:

But I say to you, Do not resist the one who is evil. But if anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also. And if anyone would sue you and take your tunic, let him have your cloak as well. And if anyone forces you to go one mile, go with him two miles. Give to the one who begs from you, and do not refuse the one who would borrow from you.

It's very clear that the government is wrong in keeping these much needed aid from the masses at the time it was needed the most.

Non Christians may do whatever they wish, However, is it right for a born again child of God to join in the looting? Especially as I saw Many people online saying "it is our food"

I would like to know your opinions please.

That's not my definition of grooving Sir, even if it were, I have better things to do with my life if only these restrictions are lifted.

I'm in no way underestimating the deadly effects of Corona globally,

I'm just tired of being caged and wish our government would design something that suits our own case. And stop this copy and paste approach.

This is an isolation center O!
I don't understand the kind of Corona we have in Nigeria.
If these are the ”patients" and all that there is to the sickness, then a layman like me would argue that the government should just allow us continue our lives because I seems ordinary flu is even more fearful.

NYSC / Not all bad news about Nigeria, as Sierra Leone copys Nigerian's NYSC Program by sonofjos(m): 5:35pm On Apr 18, 2020
When you hear how Nigerians complain about the country and its past and present leadership, one would think the leaders have never gotten a single thing right. While it is so true that many things are upside down in country, it is noteworthy that many African countries still look up to us to learn many innovations from the government and private sector. An example is that of Sierra Leone, a country set to launch the NYS a replica of Nigeria's NYSC. Let's celebrate our successes more and keep striving for a better. Nation.

The National Youth Service (NYS) in collaboration with UN Volunteers on Thursday September 28, held one day engagement on the Implementation of National Youth Service Scheme.

The engagement which was attended by representatives of Ministries, Department and Agencies (MDA) and members from the private sector was held at the Atlantic Hall, Siaka Stevens Stadium Hostels in Freetown

The National Youth Service (NYS) was launched on December 14, 2016 by President Ernest Bai Koroma. The scheme which give volunteers a hand is aimed at providing young people with opportunities to gain valuable work experience, promote self-discipline, expand their knowledge of Sierra Leone’s social and cultural diversities and help to bridge ethnic divide.

Prof. David S. M. Koroma, Chairman of the Board of National Youth Service, said the engagement was to ensure that young graduates with the right attitude are supported.

ADVERT POST MIDDLE
Mohamed Pateh Bah, Executive Director of National Youth Service, said that the NYS Act was enacted in February 2, 2016 to create opportunity for young people to participate in governance and be entrepreneurs to move the economy forward. He said that the government can’t employ all the graduates, hence the intervention of the private sector.

Mr. Bah said that by the end this year they want to see 500 graduates start a training which will see the full commencement of the the National Youth Service. He assured of government full support to the National Youth Service Scheme.

Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Sierra Leone Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Agriculture, James S. Koroma said that they are committed to promoting the economic interests of its members.
He said that their presence at the engagement shows their commitment to collaborate with the National Youth Service Commission in ensuring that the NYS is implemented to its fullest. He said that Chamber considers the scheme very important.

In his keynote address, the Minister of Youth Affairs, Bai Mamud called on all MDAs and the private sector to see the need to support government in achieving the goal of creating strong foundation for graduates. He said that he has gone to other countries where the is working well with the help of MDAs and the private sector.

“Government is committed to change the face of our youth in the country by giving them the opportunity to start working after they would have finished university,” he said.

Allan Young Ogwang, representative of UN Volunteers, said as an institution they are supporting the National Youth Service by providing technical guidance as to how a national scheme like this is set up and what needs to be in replace. “As a key partner of the National Youth Service we are committed to see that it works well for our young brothers and sisters in the country,” he said.

Well I support movement within states that has below 5 cases but there should be lockdown of inter state movement in states with 2cases and above

We would have had zero lockdown and free movement within the entire country had the government locked down the country's borders right at the start before a single case.
Health / We Can’t Declare Total Lockdown In Bauchi Because The People Must Eat by sonofjos(m): 2:34pm On Apr 18, 2020
Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State says the government cannot afford to impose a total lockdown in the state because the people must eat.

Mr Mohammed said this in Bauchi while commiserating with traders of Musa Lawal market on the inferno that destroyed some shops and property worth millions in the market.

He explained that the government would, however, enforce a minimal lockdown and urged the people to observe social distancing to prevent the spread of the virus.

“On behalf of the government of Bauchi State, we came to commiserate with you over this monumental loss in this Musa Lawal market, which is one of the biggest markets in Bauchi.

“I understand that about 17 shops have been burnt and one life was lost; the state government will take steps to cushion the effects of the losses by bringing some palliatives immediately, so that the traders will go back to business.

“I want to seize this opportunity to tell you that COVID-19 is a reality, I just came out of it and it is not a joke.

“I urge you to continue to exercise social distancing as we are going to enforce minimal lockdown, but we cannot afford total lockdown because people must eat,” he said.

Mr Mohammed who said God tested his faith with COVID-19, revealed that he had ordered the complete closure of all borders leading to the state to deny index cases from entering the state.

“I want to place on record that Bauchi has closed all its borders and they will remain closed.

“If we have 20 cases in Kano, be sure we have to really man our borders to make sure no goods or persons come from Kano and nobody from your market goes to Kano.

“And of course, we too are not going to Gombe, Yobe, Jos, or Taraba; we should try to exist alone
