There is no competition here, your university gives you a qualification which is an entry requirement. Real education begins after graduation, within every graduate is a seed to succeed. The key to success is to be fruitful, multiply and replenish..... sounds familiar? Fruitful = produce value, multiply = expand, replenish = innovate. Having said that, If you are a private university student who will like to be paid to write about your university news/gossip/gist on an online magazine, contact me - oluisrel@yahoo.co.uk |

Ghadafi appointed his sons as head of the army, intelligence agency, state run oil company. ![]() I do not recommend this for Naija Anyway, this is not new in Naija Mimiko appointed his brother as Vice chancellor of the state university. Agagu appointed his brother to a position I cannot remember. There was a gist Ohakim's son occupied "office of the first son" (not confirmed) |

What will it cost you to add other ethinc groups? Is it tech related (server, etc ) or sheer laziness |
tollu:AAHH! I was expecting such a comment. Most Nigerians don't realize bicycles can be a prize possession, my current cheap bike cost just under £300, my colleague just got a new bike for £650 (N162500). From the look of it, that's a road bike. I can't make out the brand. Expensive road bikes can go for as high as £3000 and guess what, they don't look any different from what this guy is riding except you have an expert eye. |
If an ordinary Nigerian, perhaps a lecturer from Rufus Giwa Polytechnic made this request, would FERMA panic? ![]() Just asking |

owobokiri:ANSWER, The United States said May 11 it wanted to set guidelines with China on the use of space, voicing worries that the Asian power is increasingly able to destroy or jam satellites. China stunned the United States in 2007 by becoming the third country to shoot down one of its own satellites in space, the first such test in the more than two decades since Washington and Moscow halted their "Star Wars" programs. Gregory Schulte, a senior U.S. official in charge of space defense, described China's investment in the field as "eyeballing" and said he has asked his Beijing counterparts in past talks to set "rules of the road" moving forward. http://www.defensenews.com/story.php?i=6478947&c=ASI&s=TOP |
odiaero:just confirming what ElRazur said and it really looks stealthy ![]()
|
ElRazur:Very correct, you are talking about the F-117 shot down in Serbia in 1999 which china used for their J-20 ElRazur:Adm. Mike Mullen, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, on Wednesday stated that he is “genuinely concerned” about China’s expanded military programs. Admiral Mullen said in a speech in Washington that he was worried by China’s “heavy investments” in sea and air capabilities and its rejection of military contacts with the US. http://www.csmonitor.com/World/terrorism-security/2010/0610/US-concerned-about-China-s-military-investments The Chinese defense budget in 2010 was close to $80 billion USD, which is dwarfed by the U.S. government's $530 billion investment yet guys like Mike Mullen can make such remarks, I think you should consider China a threat
|
ElRazur:Why is china omitted? I don't know if they have unmanned aerial crafts but China has the second largest defence budget in the world behind the US. And at a time when other countries are reducing defence spending ($400billion for the US by 2023) China is increasing its and this has been a source of worry for United States. The US is already considering reducing its order of F-35s joint strike fighter: the most expensive military-industrial programme in history. The average price of each F-35 is $133m today and the cost of maintaining the total fleet, $1trillion over the planes lifetime A Chinese defense expert named Dingli Shen in Shanghai was talking about the irrelevance of traditional land and sea power in the dawning age of combat - when weapons will include cyberattacks, space weapons, lasers, pulses and other directed-energy beams. With a laser weapon fired from space, "any ship will be burned." China's future isn't in competing to build aircraft-carrier battle groups, argues Shen, but in advanced weapons "to make other command systems fail to work." The nature of warfare is nearing another "hinge point" attributable to the advance of technology. He says that he's grateful that the United States is willing to spend so many billions of dollars to protect the sea lanes on which China depends for its global commerce. But instead of competing to build ships and tanks, he says, China will focus on the weapons that can cripple them. Guess what, In 2010, China matched the United States in the number of rocket launches into space (15), the first time any nation has equaled the United States Modern warfare is not for cash strapped countries |
Katsumoto:TRUE , but the war was heading to a stalemate before the entry of France. France dragged Spain into the war because of a ‘Family Compact' which called for each monarch to provide military and naval forces to the other, should either of their respective nations be attacked. The monarchs were related. The French extended considerable financial support to the American forces.Washington's ragtag poorly fed, poorly dressed troops(on the verge of mutiny, many were deserting) and were paid with french money. France also supplied vital military arms and supplies, and loaned money to pay for their purchase. Spain and France sought to reduce England's substantial power, the two countries had different priorities as to particular geographical objectives. The Royal Navy suffered its most significant defeat in nearly 200 years at the hands of a French Admiral. The battle which led to British surrender was as a result of a French General's strategy and tactics, he lent money to Washington's army and French naval and army personnel outnumbered Americans by 4 to 1 in that battle , at the end of the war, France was near banktrupcy as a result of the financial burden. |
^^ and they (Britain) only lost the American war of independence because of French and Spanish interference. The world is really boring these days, warfare is changing. What we have now is low intensity wars between nations and organisations e.g Israel vs Hezbollah, Hamas; US and allies vs Al-qaeda, Taliban nations vs ideology; war on terror |
I'm not saying different things I am just comparing the powerful and efficient British army of the past to the present one. Modern warfare is really expensive and with the current Defence budget cuts, it can only get weak |
ElRazur:The British army is now a shadow of itself, reducing it to 82,000 won;t do any good. Former US sec of defence, Robert Gates criticized NATO allies for their inability to maintain a campaign of about 5 months in their backyard (Libya), some are running short of ammunition already and are calling for US help. http://www.washingtonpost.com/world/gates-rebukes-european-allies-in-farewell-speech/2011/06/10/AG9tKeOH_story.html |
I think the most important point is they were very professional, couple that with discipline and you have a small group of officers overseeing a conquered colony effectively. , and don't forget the infamous divide and rule tactic ![]() |
The British army is due to be reduced to 82,000 by 2020, prompting claims it will be the smallest it has been since the 19th Century. But if Britain had a small army then, how did it control an empire? Considering the British Empire at its peak included a quarter of the world's population, But the British Empire managed to maintain hegemony over dozens of colonies with a relatively tiny number of men. Defence Secretary Liam Fox announced this week he planned to cut regular army numbers to 82,000 - 120,000 in total including the Territorial Army (TA) - by 2020. It was widely reported this was the smallest it had been since the Boer war. So has the army ever been smaller than it will be in 2020? Scene from Cecil Rhodes BBC documentary The British Empire's expansion into Africa was driven by traders like Cecil Rhodes "The first regular army - the New Model Army [of England] - was created by Oliver Cromwell and it grew in size from 44,000 to 68,000," says Rylance. The army kept growing throughout the 18th Century (as the British army after the acts of union of 1707) and after the Napoleonic Wars it fell to 92,000 in 1817, before growing again as the British Empire expanded. But Michael Codner, head of military science at the Royal United Services Institute, says Britain has never had a large army. "What we needed was the Royal Navy and a system of indigenous constabularies overseen by a small but professional British army," he says. Military historian, Dr Huw Davies, from King's College London, points out India was garrisoned by hundreds of thousands of locally-recruited sepoys, supervised by fewer than 30,000 British troops. "The empire had to pay for itself and had to be profitable and if you put too much into building up the army the empire is no longer a profitable enterprise," he says. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-14218909 |
MASSOB was not offered amnesty or dialogue despite their non-violent approach ![]() isn't that unfair? The leader of the Movement for the Actualization of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB), Chief Ralph Uwazuruike has threatened that his group may abandon its non-violent approach and toe the line of the Boko Haram since the Federal Government understands the language of violence. Uwazuruike, in an exclusive interview with Daily Sun in Owerri at the weekend said both groups were calling for the division of the country in different ways, saying while the Boko Haram adopted violence approach to press their demands, the latter (MASSOB) engaged in non-violent method to achieve the same objective. |
French Prime Minister Francois Fillon on Saturday visited Ghana, Africa's newest major oil producer, telling President John Atta Mills that France wanted to take part in his nation's development. Fillon travelled to the West African nation on the second stop of a three-country tour that first led him to Ivory Coast, with his final stop Gabon. Ghana was the only one of the three on the tour that was not a former French colony, having gained independence from Britain in 1957. Fillon said the visit showed "France's willingness to participate in Ghana's economic development," adding that his country was re-orienting its policies toward Africa to further engage non-French-speaking nations. "Many French companies are interested in doing business in Ghana," Fillon said at a meeting with Mills, with 2011 GDP growth estimates for the country having been put at around 12 percent. Besides its recently discovered oil wealth, Ghana is seen as a democratic model in West Africa. Mills narrowly won presidential elections in 2008 and is running again in the 2012 vote. Mills said at the meeting that his country had followed the path of democracy as the only way of attaining peace and economic development. But the start of large-scale oil production in December has raised concerns over the potential pitfalls, with some warning of the corruption and economic mismanagement that has plagued nearby Nigeria, Africa's largest oil producer. http://news.yahoo.com/french-prime-minister-visits-newly-oil-rich-ghana-192018068.html

Gaddafi ran a school near Benghazi called the World Revolutionary Center (WRC), where he gave military training to foreign leaders who shared ideological similarities with him.[84] Blaise Compaoré of Burkina Faso and Idriss Déby of Chad were graduates of this school, and are currently in power in their respective countries.[85] Gaddafi trained and supported Charles Taylor of Liberia, Foday Sankoh, the founder of Revolutionary United Front, Jean-Bédel Bokassa, the Emperor of the Central African Empire.,[86][87] and Mengistu Haile Mariam of Ethiopia.[87] Gaddafi intervened militarily in the Central African Republic in 2001 to protect his ally Ange-Félix Patassé from overthrow. Patassé signed a deal giving Libya a 99-year lease to exploit all of that country's natural resources, including uranium, copper, diamonds, and oil.[84] He also sent troops to fight against Tanzania on behalf of Idi Amin and lost 600 Libyan soldiers defending Amin's collapsing regime.[86] Gaddafi's support frequently went to leaders recognized by the United Nations as dictators and warlords. Gaddafi used anti-Western rhetoric against the UN, and complained that the International Criminal Court was a "new form of world terrorism" that wanted to recolonize developing countries.[88] Gaddafi opposed the ICC's arrest warrant for Sudan's President Omar al-Bashir and personally gave refuge to Idi Amin in Libya after his fall from rule in 1979.[89] According to the Special Court for Sierra Leone, Charles Taylor's orders for "The amputation of the arms and legs of men, women, and children as part of a scorched-earth campaign was designed to take over the region’s rich diamond fields and was backed by Gaddafi, who routinely reviewed their progress and supplied weapons".[85][90] Gaddafi's support for different rulers and dictators across Africa cemented his reputation as a powerful African leader, and gained him several allies across the continent. He was bestowed the title of King of Kings of Africa in 2008 as part of a grassroots effort to encourage African heads of state and government to follow Gaddafi towards greater political integration. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Muammar_Gaddafi |

Four Nigerian policemen have appeared in court in the first public hearing over the killing of radical Islamist leader Mohammed Yusuf in 2009. The Boko Haram leader was captured alive in Maiduguri and paraded in front of video cameras, but his body was later displayed riddled with bullets. Legal proceedings began earlier this year but the hearings were kept secret. The trial has now been adjourned until next Tuesday when a fifth officer will be included in the trial and formal charges will be made against the men. The Nigerian government is often accused of failing to prosecute police accused of brutality and extra-judicial killings. Two years ago, Nigeria's security forces brutally suppressed an uprising by Boko Haram, destroying their compound and then capturing Mr Yusuf. Instead of disappearing, the group, which opposes Western education and fights for Islamic rule, re-emerged last September and vowed to avenge its leader's death. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-africa-14136185

^^ proposing 7 years single term for political office holders |
@op why did u call it boko haram state Sorry for my indecision, could not make up my mind on typing Borno state or Boko Haram closes University of, , First it was sharia law by the elite(Zamfara Governor and co), Now it is scrapping of western education by the masses(Boko Haram), at the same time, technocrats(CBN Governor) want to implement islamic banking! Is it right to say northern muslims, both elite, masses, educated, uneducated, want a fully islamic northern Nigeria?
|
Obiagu1:What is the difference between Boko Haram's demand and the implementation of Sharia law by Northern Governors during Obj's term? It seems northern muslims have always wanted an islamization of the north, not in this way though. Politics worked a little, violence might be more effective. Boko Haram took a cue from MEND |
