You are not too late to join us. There is enough space. There is someone at Ajah that can make you stay put on the Island without the urge to come over to sunshine on the mainland where everything grows naturally. Note that you should always endeavour to wash your car and underbody regularly especially when it rains or you will still have to cross over to use fresh water to wash away salt from your car .His username on Nairaland is lejeun 3. Oil destroyed many of our RRS because we were finding it difficult to get good oils and those who stood their ground are still driving their Range as follow come, 10 years after. There is one that was bought in 2013 and it is still on going, no issues. Those are the Directors and new Directors are emerging and we sincerely hope that you are one of them. Welcome once again.

Yeah, Toyota cars are failing, i just don't think many people talk about it, a friend's 07 Rav 4 transmission had to be worked on, i learned this at church today, the vehicle was purchased foreign used early 2023. I use 09 Sonata and the only thing I've fixed in three years is a fuse, this is not to say Hyundai is better than Toyota, but to say no brand is immune to wear or abuse, the past user of my vehicle (oyinbo) could have driven it less and maintained it better.
The point still remains, the older the car, the higher the chances of major components failing within a short time after purchase here as Tokunbo, from bad maintenance, to all sorts of abuse and or even unhealthy mods (relatively new trend), and regular wear, it is why i will pick a 2023 innoson vehicle that costs 18m over a 2018 Toyota/Honda or Benz at the same price.
I don't care so much about the brand, if I'm buying new and there's no major issues for recall or known issues from user reviews, if the car is new, then how long It serves me is mostly/totally up to my maintenance game.
A 2024 innoson/Nord/ or any of these brands that can be brought brand new here in Naija ( relatively cheaper than the likes of Toyota/Honda/Nissan/Benz of the same year) are good buys compared to older products of these big names.
If you get brand new money of innoson/Nord go buy am jeje get peace of mind for a few years.
The older the vehicle, the more the troubles to expect, quite simple, no brand, build or model of any vehicle is an exemption to this.
My next car is going to be a brand new car, I don't care what the brand is, just that it'll be brand new, near zero mileage with that new smell of factory leather and dashboard material, i need to talk about "breaking" in lol.

I recall years ago when Honda discussion continues came out into the market, Honda place were trying to sell off the end of discussion Accord with discount to make way for the new. Some of these brand new cars spend more than two years in the Customs warehouses before they are eventually sold off as brand new cars. You might be buying a 2019 car as brand new and it won’t last longer than the 2018 car you bought as toks. The auto industry is in a dilemma

My landlord is a Toyota addict lol, he was using a Toyota Corolla 2003, used for 4 years, he changed a compressor over 4 times, brake calipers twice, and replaced the transmission once, he sold it in a working condition when he wanted to buy 2017 corolla.
The 2017 corolla was bought Tokunbo, I could tell the car was in an accident because the trunk has imperfect shape, but well everything else was okay, besides the cracked windshield, he got it for 8 million ( early 2023), the car came with fan connected directly, all works fine besides this, it is barely used though.
Fast forward to this year, he bought 2007 Toyota highlander (15M), SUV works fine, fan connected directly also, a week after purchase, it overheated, they told him to change the radiator, he bought for 92k, car continued to work fine.
A month or so after, he was scratched by another vehicle around the bumper area at a shopping mall parking area, he sadly found out the bumper wasn't the original one, was a black bumper pained white (the SUV colour), he ordered another bumper from Lagos the next day, he wanted his car to remain in good shape and didn't want no patch work, bumper came and was replaced.
One day he drove out and didn't come back with the SUV, called his wife to come pick him with the corolla, SUV got faulty (less than three months), was a serious transmission issue, yet to be fixed even now.
What's my point, I don't think this has too much to do with the brand of the vehicle, I think this has more to do with age of rje vehicle, how many hands have used and worked on it, the maintenance culture and car care attitude of previous users before being shipped here, I will never believe in the reliability of any foreign used (Tokunbo) vehicle, as far as i don't know nothing about the previous users, our dealers here can be criminals too, buying a car as tokunbo doesn't really keep you from car troubles, Toyota is also definitely not trouble free/ fortified against abuse or old age.
All cars age and fall apart eventually, the question is how long if well maintained, and that's got no definite answer.

You have said it all. Growing up in Europe, my first car was a Toyota Supra and I upgraded to the next model of 1986. That was my first encounter with Toyota but I never made the mistake of shipping it to Nigeria because in the 90s, we never had the right fuel for the car. The Toyota that is being sold in Nigeria is not up to the level of a 1988 Supra both in performance and durability. Imagine a 2014 Corolla SA model that I will need to change the gear along with the engine in order to have peace of mind for a while.

The 9 pin is more simpler than the American version it should be easier to fix if they claim they can fix 10 pin

Bought brand new in 2015 and lying fallow for 3 years now. From 550k to 980k with no guarantee unless I buy engine and gearbox. The US spec is very easy to get and adapts easily

Not sure if you are aware that new Toyotas are also failing. I have a 2014 Corolla bought brand new that even parts sellers are not comfortable selling the gear only without the engine. It is a 9 pin SA model. I was told to buy engine and gearbox together.

The Nigerian market is the same as the US market. Almost all the cars used in the USA are shipped to Nigeria

Maintenance is key and I am shocked at the continued failure of the Velar in the country. Poor maintenance is destroying these cars. Stop it folks. I had an Evoque 2016 that a rewire tropicalised the electronics because his scanner could not read anything. Ditto a velar. If your mechanic does not have the latest scanner for the brand, keep walking.
