The little girl continued running. Her feet were hurting. The blisters had turned reddish, yet she kept running. Her lungs felt as though they would go up in flames. Her breath came in sharp rapid bursts. Her heart raced faster than she ever thought possible, as though the poor thing wanted to race out of the tiny frame that held it. The long wrapper she tied around her chest bellowed in the wind and caught between her legs at intervals, obstructing her sprint. But she didn't mind. She had fallen a few times already. She just got right up and continued running. She had no idea which way to go. But she didn't care. The heat of the sun burned her dark skin, drying up the beads of sweat that seeped out of unseen pores. Amina knew she couldn't stop. The men had been most brutal with her parents. They had appeared from nowhere in the mid-afternoon. Her parents' screams had brought her away from inside the hut where she had been busy making 'kunu'. She had been about to run out the front door when she stopped short. The body of her father lay lifeless in the sun. The men wore military uniforms. They had then dragged her mother inside one of their big vans. Amina couldn't bear the sight, but she knew she couldn't come out either. Her mother's eyes said it all. *** Zainobe saw her daughter as soon as the nine year old came close to the door. Through her blurry vision she could still make out the dark face, the frightened eyes, the bright red wrapper she had on... From her perspective, Amina looked lost and helpless. But there was nothing she could do. The men didn't know there had been someone else in the house. They had searched through the whole of it. When they came out without Amina, Zainobe had thanked Allah for His mercies. As her little girl retreated back into the shadows, Zainobe offered more prayers to God, asking Him to protect her baby. She didn't want to lose the two most important things to her in the same day... *** The little girl could hardly walk. Her bones felt like rubber. Her feet were raw and bleeding. She was in shock, a dazed expression blanketing her face. Her head reeled; she knew she was going to faint. Her throat screamed with thirst. Totally exhausted she fell down and moved no more. *** It would be weeks later before the body would be discovered. None knew the story of the corpse that lay by the roadside. None knew that she had been a beautiful child. None knew that she had had a happy family, and none knew what she would have become. None cared... |

A new novel by a prolific young Nigerian author features gay characters, which could help increase the visibility of the gay community and possibly lead to greater understanding of LGBT Nigerians. The book, “Sex and Lagos City” by Success Akpojotor, is an erotic novel set in the Lagos metropolis. It is only available in electronic format In a podcast interview session with NoStrings, Akpojotor, who is a graduate of the University of Benin said, “The reception of the book has been phenomenal, and I will say that Nigerians and Chinese are [its] largest consumers.” “Sex and Lagos City” has been warmly received by many LGBT people in Nigeria who have been waiting for mainstream LGBT-friendly literature that is close to home. Some authors feature gay elements in their work to promote sales, but Akojotor denied that he is doing that. “My intention is to appeal to a global audience and to account for the different sexual orientations present in Africa, so it’s not about sales or money; it is a literary work of art,” he said. “WARNING: DO NOT READ THIS BOOK. YOU DO AT YOUR OWN RISK. Reading this book will wet your whistle and make you tangle your bed-sheets. CAUTION! CAUTION! CAUTION! Set in the Lagos metropolis. The fieriest, ritziest, most reckless realm of profligates. It is 2014 Bode Ross rapes his wife - Asa. The State takes him to court - and things are about to get filthy. Until the sexy, smart and beautiful Wura - a Senior Advocate - appears from the blue to defend Bode. But Wura has a motive - a stone to kill many birds: Get vengeance, vengeance and vengeance. And she'll do anything to get it. But she cannot control the future. She enters Governor Victoria's book; and Governor Victoria will do anything to change her son's sexual orientation.” The book features characters with different sexual orientations. Akpojotor said he is not promoting homosexuality. “I am simply mirroring sex in the city of Lagos,” he said. The writer also said that the book became one of the most downloaded books within 48 hours of its release on okadabooks.com – an online platform for Nigerian books. Akpojotor is a prolific author, most of whose books have only been published electronically. Turn around? I mean I’m not sure what your questions refers too. In bad weather you have to use your best judgement just as you would if driving to the grocery store. If we were in a flood situation I’d probably not be out driving. Use common sense in bad weather and perhaps just stay at home and off the roads. Not worth risking your life to be out to make a few Uber bucks. If you have never used your Uber free ride code or wish to drive for Uber please use my referral code to get $20 on your first ride or a sign on bonus when you start driving. Driving is a great way to make some extra income, feel free to ask me any questions and I will be glad to help. My referral code is M6B94UE or for Lyft please use code” GREGATLANTA. |
In this short post, I will quickly give you (the Uber Driver) a couple of Tips that will come in handy in driving smart, rather than hard, and ultimately help in maximizing your revenue! 1.) Know your Staging Points A staging point is essentially a stopping place or assembly point en route to a destination. It is the place you wait for your Uber customers/ riders. Knowing where to wait for fares will make the difference between picking up 1 customer per hour to maybe 5 per hour. Some common staging points are at hotels, restaurants and airports. In selecting staging points, it is important to observe customer behavior and keep a detailed log of rides picked up and at what points in the day. Also important is talking to other rideshare drivers. Over time it will be obvious when and where you need to respond to requests for Uber cars by customers 2.) Ask Questions As previously mentioned it is important to ask a lot of questions. Talk to other Uber Drivers and also your clients (Uber customers) if they are willing to chat with you. (FYI – don’t push a discussion though if they are not particularly chatty or you might get dinged by the user when it comes time to get rated). The answers to these questions can help you refine and get the most optimal staging points for your Uber driving schedule. Some questions you can ask other drivers (and also yourself) are: a) Can you tell me where your good staging points are? b) Can you tell me what times to be at these staging points (follow up to the first question above)? c) Are there certain events I should pay attention to in the coming weeks? d) What events calendar do you use? e) Where is the nightlife? Some questions you can ask your passengers (if they are chatty) are: a) So where are you going to today? b) Are you a regular Uber passenger? c) What type of events do you typically call Uber cars for? d) Do you use Uber at specific times? The aggregate answers to the afore-mentioned questions from different passengers can help you with selecting staging locations and planning your driving schedule. You can also come up with other interesting questions too. Just remember to make sure the conversation is relaxed, and does not feel like a job interview. Just let the conversation flow! 3.) Weather Forecasting The Uber pricing regimen includes a concept called “surge pricing”. According to Uber “... rates increase to get more cars on the road and ensure reliability during the busiest times (i.e. lots of passengers, but not enough Uber drivers). When enough cars are on the road, prices go back down to normal levels...” As an Uber driver you should be aware of patterns in weather that can cause this price spike (sometimes up to 5 times the normal rate). Keeping a detailed driving log can help you with a high level data analysis, and make you the “surge price” soothsayer. As a rule of thumb, if you don’t feel like driving because the weather is bad, so do other drivers. The scarcity of drivers will cause an imbalance in the Uber ecosystem: This is good for you!!! $$$$ You can take advantage of this, and make up to 5 times as much money when others don’t and take a break later. (Note – be wise and use discretion, ultimately you cannot make money if your car is totaled, or worse you are in the morgue). 4.) Restaurant Week Have you ever read an ad similar to this in a newspaper or website: “San Diego, CA – San Diego Restaurant Week is ecstatic to celebrate 11 years of culinary excellence by offering an entire week of delicious discounted dining at some of San Diego County’s finest restaurants! For ONE WEEK ONLY, Sunday, January 18th through Saturday, January 24th, foodies will be able to eat their hearts out at over 200 participating restaurants that will offer three-course prix-fixe dinner menus for just $20, $30, $40 or $50 per person and/or two-course prix-fixe lunch menus for only $10, $15 or $20 per person” - http://www.sandiegorestaurantweek.com/press If you love food and have a little bit of cash, then you probably got excited like me. Restaurant weeks across the country are typically cash cows for restaurants, and now they are cash cows for you - the Uber driver. Wherever there are lots of people, especially young, hip, and trendy people then there is an opportunity for you to make money driving with Uber. 5.) Uber Hive fb community is your friend By now, I would assume that you are starting to see a pattern! Wherever there is demand for transportation by young people, trendy people, or professionals, there is probably a demand for Uber. This means sporting events, music events, concerts, and conventions are prime venues to pick those Uber passengers. Once you have gone through the fb community, and determined the events which lots of people will be at, plan to be there 10 to 15 minutes before the scheduled end of the event to pick up customers. Don't forget to mark the star "interested" on an event your are interested in going. I have a personal bias for Uber Hive on facebook (https://www.fb.com/uberhive); however, there are other sites I recommend which you can monitor for events. You should probably do this on a weekly basis as you plan your driving schedule.

Saw the news yesterday about the calabar kidnapping of some white men. Maybe that's why I think I have to report this. On my way to UNIBEN this morning by the bus stop at S&T Barracks Benin city, I came across a brand new Toyota Highlander. Wine colour. Driving on the opposite direction of the road. Directly opposite the Barracks. This was at about 9:10AM. As I parted to give way for the moving vehicle, I saw one white man, sitting at the back seat between 3 black men, looking timidly at me. I immediately became suspicious and made an attempt to get the plate number of the vehicle. I tried to walk quickly ahead, to get the plate number of the vehicle, and so the driver seeing me coming, made two reckless attempts to enter the other lane of the highway. They were able to at the third attempt in spite of oncoming vehicles. And so I couldn't get the number. but I recall, seeing the GTE as at the begining of the number. I hope this helps. The man I saw was sitting low in the vehicle towards the driver window. I couldn't see his hair color. |
The title of the book is Sex and Lagos City. Please keep out of reach of children. When I first came across the book, I was fascinated by the title because I already imagined it to be the Nigerian version of the American movie - Sex and the City. I was very wrong. It was pure Nigerian erotica. It's a little more detailed than Hints - the popular Nigerian magazine about erotic stories. I was thrilled not by the fact that the governor of Lagos, in the book, was a woman. Instead, I was thrilled by the way the writer vividly described the sex scenes in every book chapter. Now let me tell you my craziest part of the book - at this point, I had to drop the book and shut down my brain. It's the scene where a gay man gave a priest a BJ. It made me question whether the writer, Kendrick Lamar, is actually Nigerian. I suppose it's not the rapper, Kendrick Lamar, we know. I enjoyed the book every bit - except for the gay aspect of the book. I find it disturbing. This is definitely the craziest book ever written about Lagos. |

Muhammad Ali was quick with his fists but he also knew the power of words to unsettle his rivals. The boxing legend died Friday at the age of 74. Perhaps his most famous quote was made when he was a precocious 22-year old about to take on world heavyweight champion Sonny Liston. "Float like a butterfly, sting like a bee. The hands can't hit what the eyes can't see." The phrase was often repeated to describe his style in the ring, and became shorthand for the man who considered himself "The Greatest" before the rest of the world cottoned on. He could be fearsome... "I wrestled with an alligator, I tussled with a whale, I handcuffed lightning, thrown thunder in jail, I'm bad man....Last week I murdered a rock, injured a stone, hospitalized a brick. I'm so mean I make medicine sick," he said to laughs ahead of his famous "Rumble in the Jungle" but with George Foreman in 1974, The following year, Ali used another play on words to promote he predicted the pummeling of Joe Frazier at the "Thrilla in Manila." "It will be a killer and a chiller and a thriller when I get the gorilla in Manila." He could be arrogant Ali took the art of talking himself up to new levels, reminding rivals that there was only one king of the ring. 'If you even dream of beating me, you better wake up and apologize.' "It's hard to be humble when you're as great as I am." "Not only do I knock'em out , I pick the round." "I'm a poet, I'm a prophet, I'm the resurrector, I'm the savior of the boxing world. If it wasn't for me, the game would be dead." "It's not bragging if you can back it up." "I'm so fast that last night I turned off the light switch in my hotel room and was in bed before the room was dark." And he could be inspiring... "Don't count the days, make the days count." "Live every day like it's your last because someday you're going to be right." "Impossible is just a big word thrown around by small men who find it easier to live in the world they've been given than to explore the power they have to change it. Impossible is not a fact. It's an opinion. Impossible is not a declaration. It's a dare. Impossible is potential. Impossible is temporary. Impossible is nothing." "The man who views the world at 50 the same as he did at 20 has wasted 30 years of his life." Ironically, he also said, "I don't like fighters who talk too much."

The joys of my childhood. Tunisia 94 Atlanta 96 Abacha 98 Nigeria 99 |
“Before that night, Bode my husband had been nominated for the best single pop category of The Headies. I was happy and looked forward to it. Let the court know that I love my husband…I was in the kitchen to ensure that the gas fire as well as the electrical appliances was turned off when I felt a hand grabbed me from behind and slammed me against the floor.”- Tears was rolling down her cheeks- “He was in a white Benjamin Gold boxer only and-” “Objection Your Honour! Irrelevant details should be cut out.” Wura interrupted. “Sustained!” His Honour announced and turned his gaze to the witness box, “Give the court a lapidary narration.” Cecilia beckoned on Asa Ross to continue. Asa wiped her tears, “When he came into the kitchen, he banged me against the floor, ripped me of my clothes and forced a penetration. First he kissed me, and then started to thrust his first two fingers into my vagina before he penetrated me with his penis. He was squeezing my breasts without pity-” Whisperings and murmurings had covered every corner of the courtroom as most of the men had begun to experience involuntary erections. Justice Janus slammed down his gavel, “Order in my court! If this misdemeanor of yours should linger, I shall hold the offender in contempt.” He beckoned on Cecilia to continue as silence enveloped the room again. “Did he stop squeezing your breasts?” “No. He did it the entire time and finally turned me to penetrate my ass after he bleeped my cunt and-” His Honour cut in, to Asa, "Taboo words are not allowed in my court.” “I’m sorry Your Honour.” Asa said. Cecilia said to Asa, “Did you consent to the sex?” “No,” Asa said. “So it was rape?” Cecilia said. “Yes.” Asa replied. “Cecilia on returning to her seat beckoned on Wura, “Your witness.” It was time for cross examination and Wura was ready to score points with the judge. “You’re Asa Ross.” Wura said, almost a question, for emphasis. “Yes!” Wura sighed, “Isn’t it true that your husband’s a ladies’ man and as such he’s loved by the folks and you thought he was cheating on you. And so in order to punish him you had to frame him for rape which you th-” “Objection M’lud. The defense is putting the witness on trial and making defaming speculations. Motion to strike her remarks” “Sustained!” His Honour turned to Wura “Comments ignored.” “Thank you Your Honour.” Wura continued with Asa “Your husband raped you, right?” “Yes.” Asa replied. “You have any idea why he did that?” “No.” Asa replied. “You’re a writer?” Wura said. “Yes.” “What do you write about?” Cecilia screamed from her table, “Objection! Irrelevancies. Counsel’s baiting the witness.” “Your Honour I’m establishing grounds for evidence presentation.” Wura countered. “Overruled! I indulge the defense.” His Honour said to Cecilia and turned to Asa Ross, “answer the question.” “Fiction”- Asa passed her tongue over her lips- “Thrillers, erotica and social issues.” “You’ve published two novels.’ Asa was delighted that she was getting a free promo for her brand in court. “Yes. Hardcover, paperback, eBook and audiobook formats.” “I’m a fan of your debut.” Wura returned to her table and collected a paperback with the title Sex And Déjà Vu; and returned to Asa “This is your debut?” She held it atop for Asa and the court to see. “Yes.’ Asa said. “Published in 2011, its theme is a couple suffering from sexomnia.” “Yes.” “So I take it that you have vast knowledge about sexomnia as a result of your research for Sex And Déjà Vu?’ Continue this story?
