Another victory for Nigeria

The Senate has finally cleared Dr Williams Babatunde Fowler as the Executive Chairman, Federal Inland Revenue (FIRS).

Fowler was nominated for the post by President Muhammadu Buahri and has since been in charge of the FIRS since he was appointed and screened by the Senate, although in acting capacity.

The approval for Fowler came after Senators unanimously adopted a Report by Committee on Finance on his screening headed by Senator John Enoh (Cross Rivers).

Presenting the Report during Wednesday’s Plenary, Sen. Enoh said the new FIRS Chairman was qualified to hold the office being thoroughly screened and cleared by the Police the Department of State Security (DSS) and the Code of Conduct Bureau.
He said Fowler also proved to be competent given his working experience and competence in the past public offices he had held.

Seconding the motion for adoption of the Report for clearing the FIRS chairman, Senator Gbenga Ashafa, (Lagos) described Fowler as a round peg in a round hole.

He said the Chairman has over the years proved himself competent in the area of tax collection, while Lagos state where he worked could attest to his ability to generate huge revenue for Nigeria from taxation.

Senator Ashafa said the FIRS boss is known for display of innovation, stating that having worked closely with him in the past back in Lagos, he could attest to his ability to meet targets.

He advised the Senate to hold Fowler to the promise he made while undergoing Senate screening that he will mobilise more than 500 corporate bodies in Nigeria to pay tax and that he will also engage more than 5 million Nigerians to be tax payers on the national scale after he assume office.

FYI America faced their challenges on this and surmounted it not by fiat , same was the UK -Scotland plebiscite of last year .
