If you are investing dollars into ANY portfolio investment in a country whose currency is not stable, it's a BIG RISK.

Even if it's treasury bills

because when you want to repatriate your funds, you will not get the same dollar value, or something close.

Imagine the currency falling from 150 /160 to 480 then receding to 360 all within 3 years

Like I said it is a foreign exchange risk , even if you take pounds to buy American tbills you are exposed to foreign exchange risk. You have a risk while someone that buys tbills with Naira assumes no risk . Best advice purchase tbills in America .

In my opinion, Nigeria is not a stable country to invest for that long on compounding your capital

What id advise is 5 years horizon max.

BUT!

If Nigeria gets its acts together in between, it will be a very good idea

So its a risk

A big risk!

I have diaspora friends who have lost BIG MONEY in the three years of Buhari presidency because of the massive inflation plus depreciation/devaluation of the currency undecided

Imagine investing 100000 dollars in Nigerian securities in day 2014 to be compounding

today the value of the thing in dollar terms will not even be up to 50k,, 60k highest

The investment of your friends is not a zero risk investment. T bills is a zero risk investment. Your friends assumed a foreign exchange risk.

It just means you would pay a little bit more than the quoted price.

You can seek clarification from your stockbroker and/or read here: https://www.investopedia.com/terms/d/dirtyprice.asp

The bond seller is giving up his right to coupon so why will a buyer pay him for the coupon ? The coupon has its intrinsic value embedded in the bond already.

Hello investors
I was going through CSCS daily listing and saw this quote

Symbol. Security. Opening price Closing price

FGS2019S2 12.794% FGS APR 2019 90.00 90.00.

1) Is this a FGN savings bond or FGN bond?
2) Would it mature, or the tenor end by April 2019
3) With the quoted price, can I assume that the original price was N100 but it's now being sold at a discount?
4) If 3 is yes, assuming I buy 10 units now, when it matures, would I be getting N1000 rather than N900?

Thank you.

Hello fam , the quoted price is what you pay for the bond , either a discount price or premium depending on what you find. You pay the exact price that is quoted and you have no business paying any accrued interest. If the quoted price is 90 then you pay 90 per unit of 100 per value for the total number of units you need. At maturity you get 100 per values of a unit of the FGS. So if you buy at a discounted price of 90 today at time maturity you get a 100 per value and of course your coupon as at when due.

What savings bond are you looking for and how many units do you intend on acquiring ?

Pls I don't understand the difference between primary and secondary rates that i am seeing here. Plz some one should help me and explain this tb in a more understanding way. I need to make a decision.lol.

Thanks.

Primary market is where newly issued T-bills are sold or auctioned with a primary rate determined by the DMO .

Secondary market is where already issued T-bills are re-sold using the secondary rate determined by plethora of forces but mostly takes its que form primary market rates.

The most important thing is for you to determine the rate that works for you.

Thanks sir.
So which one is often quoted for bonds? the yield to maturity or the coupon yield? I'm thinking it's the yield to maturity. is it?

The issuer of the bond beliefs that at first issuance you will hold to maturity hence the current yield will be what the coupon offers. But at the level of the secondary market YTM will either have upside or downside, this is due to the fact that bonds will either be selling for a premium or a discount this affects the yield as most will not be sold at par value.
If you have a bond in your portfolio and you want to know your current yield just use the formulae I gave earlier but in cases of the exchanges the mostly will quote YTM based on the belief aforementioned

what's TRR please?
Look at these secondary market offers posted by cooldudeng?
1. Feb 2020, coupon is 15.54%, price is 104.55, yield is 12.5%
2. Jan 2022, coupon is 16.39%, price is 108.57, yield is 13.35%.

Could you please help us know how they arrived at those quoted yields.

I suppose a bond only trades at its clean price either at issue or on a coupon payment date right?

I'll be glad to learn from any contribution you make at helping us see how those yields were arrived at. Thanks

What you have there boss is the yield to maturity (YTM)
TRR : total rate of return
Investment / Re: Bonds Investors Hub by spenca: 5:28am On Jun 02, 2018
awesomeJ

Yield is simply calculated as C/cp

C: coupon (in monetary value)
CP: clean price ( amount used to purchase the instrument)

The formulae you used above is similar to that of TRR.
