A new survey by job Web site Career Builders shows that many workers are older than their bosses, and it's not a problem arrangement for a lot of them. In this survey of more than 5,000 workers: 43% ages 35 and older currently work for someone younger than they are; 53% of workers age 45 and up say they have a boss younger than they are; and 69% of those age 55 and over say they do. Here are the reasons given by those respondents who have trouble working with their younger bosses: “They act like they know more than I do, but they don't.” “They act like they are entitled – they didn't earn their position.” “They micromanage.” “They don't give me enough direction.” “They play favorites with younger workers.” So here are my tips for succeeding in these increasingly common reporting and team relationships, many of which apply whether you are the older or younger person. Do: Support and show respect for the younger manager. Learn how to manage up so you will be valued. Be open to new ideas, even if untested. Look for mutual mentoring opportunities. Be tactful and sensitive in making constructive suggestions for improvement. Learn the manager’s communication style – and flex yours if necessary. Don’t: Talk about how things used to be, the good old days. Put down ideas. Adapt a communication style or interests that seem inauthentic to seem cool. Overvalue years of experience. Withhold information that will help the younger manager succeed or reject a collaborative style. © Phyllis Weiss Haserot, 2010. All rights reserved.

How we interact with our machines has changed and will change again. Human-Computer Interaction methods continue to evolve. From keyboard-only in the early years to the rich and multiple methods we use today; touch, voice, mouse, etc. But the very best interaction method is one that isn’t there. We all use computers in order to complete a task and achieve a goal. Anything that gets in the way is a distraction. When we put words to paper, many of us still prefer the pencil – it gives us a direct connection in a way that using a keyboard, screen, and mouse don’t quite capture. Of course there are advantages of electronic methods such as editability and re-use, but most people I know still prefer pen to paper, particularly when the act of writing is secondary such as taking notes on the phone. I believe one of the next major advances in technology will be an evolution from search to research. We will ask our computers to go and find something out for us – for example, find and book for me the best flight from London to Hamburg. Of course there are plenty of sites that allow us to search for this information today, but not to do “smart search” or research that is based on who I am and what my preferences are and also to handle the actual transaction. Of course it will take not just changes in the machines but changes in us too before we’re wholly comfortable trusting a machine to purchase things and make commitments on our behalf. But that day will come |

Flying Air Nigeria is an accident waiting to happen,” Ex-Director Warns Posted about 58 mins ago | 1 comment John I. Nnorom, a former Executive Director for Finance at Air Nigeria, has warned Nigerians to stop flying the airline until they are sure that its planes are being properly maintained. In a blistering public petition, Mr. Nnorom, who resigned his appointment with the airline on April 1, 2012, blamed the situation on big businessman Jimoh Ibrahim, the chairman of Air Nigeria, whom he accused of being uninterested in the maintenance of company aircraft. “Some of the certifying Engineers and I are under threat of assassination by Barrister Jimoh Ibrahim, if we reveal this secret to Nigerians,” he said. Mr. Nnorom said that upon his resignation, he wrote a letter in which he said he preferred to die than to be a witness to over 100 souls perishing in an Air Nigeria aircraft. He disclosed that Air Nigeria is in financial crisis because money loaned by Bank of Industry of N35.5Billion has been diverted into Mr. Ibrahim’s NICON INVESTMENT LTD, a non-finance company popularly called wonder bank, leading to air safety being compromised, and stressed that there is a great possibility of a disastrous Air Nigeria crash, which can occur at any time. He recalled that in Jan 2012, Licensed Engineers in Air Nigeria went on strike because they were being forced to certify unfit aircraft into the air, and another strike was averted in March 2012 following the intervention of the DG-NCAA, Demureen. Both events, he said, were based on failure on Failure To Meet Safety Standard, and are verifiable information the public is aware of. Why are Air Nigeria flights sometimes delayed for as many as eight hours? According to the petitioner, that is because the aircraft for that flight is not ready. “While passengers are waiting, engineers are battling to put the aircraft on Air. Several times our Aircraft on Runway taxing to takeoff, turns back to offload passengers |
I think d idea of naming schools after heroes is not bad if done with proper consultations and due processes are followed. Unfortunately their is noting we can do because mr president's pride will not allow him to reverse the decision. |
