Travel / 10 Food Scams That Could Only Happen In China Be-warn Nigerian Traveller by spymybox: 11:30pm On Apr 10, 2015
China is known for many things, but they’re perhaps most infamous for their counterfeit items. From clothes to bags to electronics—even whole towns—China has it all. However, they’ve recently taken the counterfeit business a little further and have entered the disturbing realm of counterfeit foods.

10 Plastic Rice
552846b86c3c4.jpg

If there’s one food that should be impossible to counterfeit, it would be rice. But the Chinese did it anyway. China’s fake rice is also called plastic rice. It’s made from potatoes, sweet potatoes, and synthetic resin molded into the shape of real rice. The faux rice was commonly sold in Chinese markets, especially in Taiyuan in Shaanxi Province. The rice remained as hard as stone even after it was cooked and did not digest easily. It’s also pretty dangerous, since consuming three bowls of it is equal to consuming one bag of vinyl, or one plastic bag.

Aside from producing artificial rice, dishonest Chinese rice sellers also add flavors to ordinary rice and sell them to the unsuspecting public as “Wuchang rice,” which is more costly and generally considered one of the better brands of rice sold in Chinese markets. Only 800,000 tons of this Wuchang rice are produced annually, while about 10 million tons are sold. In other words, more than 9 million tons are fake.

9 Rat Mutton
5528473d7d8bf.jpg

When they’re not tampering with rice, dishonest Chinese food sellers are adding chemicals to meat from rats, minks, and foxes and selling them as mutton. The scheme was so popular and successful that the police arrested more than 900 people and seized about 20,000 tons of this meat, all within three months. One of the sellers, a man named Wei, even raked in more than £1 million from sales alone. He mixed fox, rat, and mink meat with nitrate, gelatin, and carmine before selling it in markets to unsuspecting buyers.

Chinese police posted a tutorial on Sina Weibo, China’s biggest microblogging site, to teach people how to differentiate between real and fake mutton. While the difference between them is hard to tell at first glance, the white and red parts of real mutton don’t separate after getting thawed, torn by hand, or boiled, while the fake meat does.

8 Chemical Tofu
5528485027f13.jpg

Tofu, also called soya curd, is a cheese-like food made from a mixture of soy milk and a coagulant. Chinese authorities recently closed down two factories in Wuhan, Hubei Province for selling fake tofu, which was made by mixing various chemicals together. One worker confessed that they combined soy protein with flour, monosodium glutamate, pigment, and ice to make the fake tofu before packaging it and selling it under the name of another company that was producing real tofu.

7 Formaldehyde And Duck Blood
552848e26d876.jpg

Duck blood tofu is a delicacy in China. It’s made from blood extracted from slaughtered ducks. The blood is then heated until it thickens, allowing it to be cut into squares and sold. That’s strange already, but it gets worse: Sellers have been known to mix deadly ingredients like formaldehyde with much cheaper pig or buffalo blood, then sell the concoction as duck blood.

6 Adulterated Honey
5528494a9ad5e.jpg

There are two types of counterfeit honey: the adulterated one, which is a mixture of real honey and sugar syrup, beetroot syrup, or rice syrup, and the fake honey, which looks more like real honey than real honey itself. It is made from a mixture of water, sugar, alum, and coloring.

One kilogram (2.2 lb) of fake honey can be produced for just 10 yuan (about $1.60) and sold for as much as 60 yuan ($9.50). About 70 percent of the honey sold in China’s Jinan Province is fake and, as usual, Chinese newspapers have offered instructions on how to differentiate between real and fake honey.

5 Contaminated Bottled Water
552849e7ed8c2.jpg

Selling fake honey is one thing; messing with people’s water supplies is a whole other criminal ballpark. Police have recently uncovered a scam in which plastic bottles are filled with tap water or poorly treated water and sealed with quality standard seals—the same used by genuine bottled water companies. Among other things, the bottles have been found to contain E. coli and a stew of harmful fungi. More than 100 million bottles of this bacterial soup are sold annually, with the sellers raking in more than 1 billion yuan (about $120 million). For comparison, about 200 million bottles of water (both genuine and counterfeit) are produced in Beijing annually.

4 Rotten Rice Noodles
55284a437c491.jpg

China’s counterfeit rice noodles are made from rotten, stale, and moldy grains which are usually used as animal feed. These are then mixed with cancer-causing additives such as sulfur dioxide to get the final product. And this isn’t a one-man show—almost 50 factories in Dongguan city were found to be in on the scheme, churning out 500,000 kilograms (1.1 million lb) of counterfeited rice noodles per day. Another inspection of 35 other factories showed that 30 of them were producing substandard rice noodles. Producers bleached spoiled rice and mixed it with additives to get triple the amount of rice noodles.

3 Clenbuterol-Laced Pork
55284abe25df8.jpg

Clenbuterol, also called “lean meat powder,” is an additive added to animal feed. It burns fat in the animals but can cause sickness, heart problems, unnecessary sweating, and dizziness in humans. Its use in animal feed began in the 1980s, but was banned in 2002 because of its health risks. However, some meat-processing companies still give it to their pigs because it makes their pork leaner, and leaner pork fetches more money on the market.

To make matters worse, one of the companies involved is China’s largest meat processor and a subsidiary of Henan Shuanghui Investment and Development Company. The company issued an apology for the act, then recalled more than 2,000 tons of their pork. Twenty-four workers were sacked or suspended.

2 Fake Wine
55284b17d4fe3.jpg

Fake and counterfeited wine is a big problem in China. China Central Television (CTV) reported that half of all the wine sold in China is fake. A lot of people in China’s wine industry also believe that about 90 percent of premium wines sold in China are fake as well. To counter the sales of fake wine, the Guangdong Provincial Wine Testing Center was founded to determine the authenticity of wines. Wine producers have joined forces with the government to produce an app meant to track wine bottles and cartons to determine whether they’re original or fake.

The scam was simple: Counterfeit wine makers would use the original name, label, and design from expensive wine bottles, but would slightly alter the names and logos on theirs to differentiate them. Others would simply collect empty bottles from expensive wines and then refill them with dirt-cheap wine.

1 Yangcheng Hairy Crabs
55284b86116ab.jpg

Yangcheng hairy crabs are the most expensive crabs in China, so it’s no surprise that people would try to pass off regular crabs as the pricier breed. The real deal comes exclusively from Yangcheng Lake, but there are a few sneaky ways around that. For example, some sellers take water from Yangcheng Lake and put other crabs in it for several hours before selling them as Yangchengs. Others use chemicals on the crabs to make them look like Yangcheng crabs.

Only 1 in every 300 Yangcheng hairy crabs sold is real. The total number of crabs produced from Yangcheng is less than 3,000 tons annually, but more than 100,000 tons of crabs are sold. To counter the fake crabs, the Suzhou Crab Business Association demanded that a plastic ring with a special numerical code be attached to one of the claws of each original Yangcheng hairy crab. That plan soon failed when sellers of the real Yangcheng hairy crabs sold their tags to those selling fakes.

Science/Technology / Father And Son Build Giant Transformers Out Of Used Car Parts by spymybox: 1:06pm On Apr 06, 2015
Yu Zhilin and his son's work is solid proof that the Transformers movies are the most popular thing in China, and in this case, I think it's absolutely forgivable that they used the Michael Bay versions for their statues.

Scrap metal and discarded car parts have never looked so good. According to ShanghaiIst (via Sina) they only used those materials and an abandoned factory for their work, and while the first model took them three years to complete, they're now really good at building these things.

I'd like them to make a Metal Gear REX or something similar with the same technique. That'd look incredible.

Forum Games / Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars Comes To Android by spymybox: 10:12am On Apr 06, 2015
Grand Theft Auto is possibly one of the most well-known video game franchises, and they’re bringing some good news to the Android community today. Their long-awaited title GTA: Chinatown Wars is finally available in the Google Play Store. After its original launch on a number of different mobile platforms, it’s finally make its way to Android a mere 5 years after launch. The game was immensely popular on when it first launched in 2009, and hopefully Android fans will continue its popularity.

If you’re unfamiliar with Chinatown Wars, you play as Huang Lee who is on a mission to return an ancient sword to his Uncle Kenny to ensure his family maintains control of the Triad gangs of Liberty City. Aside from the deep storyline, Chinatown Wars still offers tons of side missions, a variety of weapons and lots of violence, just like any other Grand Theft Auto game. Now remember, this game was made five years ago for the DS, so we’re still seeing the constant overhead view like in the old games.

GTA: Chinatown Wars is compatible with Android TV devices and with select Android Bluetooth and USB controllers. Rockstar Games is currently selling the game for $4.99 in the Google Play Store. This may sound a bit high for some users, but there are no in-app purchases, and it offers many hours of gameplay. If you’re a fan of the Grand Theft Auto series, you’re going to love this game.

FACT ARE NOT REAL BRO SEE THROUGH FACT ABOUT CHINA PHONES

When buying a phone online in China, you’ll even get more questions to answer. These questions are simplified to: Will this shop really send the phone to me? Will the phone work in my country? What guarantees do I get? I tried to answer these questions in my quest for buying a new phone online in China.

Benefits of buying a phone in China

A lot of choice

These phones were made as a white label by Chinese manufactories like Huawei. A few years ago these manufactories started to sell their phones by themselves. Together with all the little manufactories that want to get their share from this markets, this led to a large number of Chinese brands. Don’t forget the Chinese market itself is also a huge market. These Chinese brands produce for their own market as for the international market as well.

I was already familiar with bigger brands like Huawei, ZTE, Lenovo. Now I know there are brands like:

ZOPO, DooGee, MI, THL, LKD, Bluboo, Asus, Cubot, Leagoo, news4, JAYU, C3, Kingzone, Star, HTM, MBL, Kinksing, Landvo, Jiake, Mpie, Miljue, Xiaocai, Blackview, Utime, HaiPai, Elephone, Gfive, Royalstar, Pomp, iNew, Laaboo, M-Horse, LKD, Macxen, M Pai, Timmy, Citric, Feiteng, Mixc, Decca, Z.doxio, Mysaga, Ebest.

And this is only the beginning. During my search I found much more brands I never heard of before. It’s impossible to know them all. To give you a quick start I can recommend the following brands.

High end Chinese brands are:

Romance / Wife Chopped Her Husband's joystick Off After She Discovered He Had Cheated by spymybox: 11:40am On Mar 18, 2015
Never has the saying 'hell hath no fury like a woman scorned' been more fitting than when a jilted wife in China chopped off her cheating husband's penis... twice.
When Feng Lung, 30, discovered her husband was having an affair she cut off his manhood with a pair of scissors, then snipped it off again after surgeons reattached it.
She is now facing jail after being arrested for causing grievous bodily harm.

Fan Lung (right) turned on his wife (left) after she cut off his penis for a second time and he was spotted naked and bloody attacking her outside the hospital

Two-timing dad-of-five Fan Lung, 32, had used his wife's mobile to send lover Zhang Hung, 21, a saucy email from his marital home in the city of Shangqiu in central China's Henan province.
But after forgetting to log out of his account, stunned wife Feng came across the message and several others, and flew into a rage.
Grabbing a pair of scissors she stormed into their bedroom where he was sleeping and cut off his penis.

Surgeons were able to reattach it, but fuming Feng sneaked into his hospital room and cut it off again before throwing it out of a window.
This prompted the cheat to turn on his wife and he was spotted naked and bloody attacking her outside the hospital.
A hospital spokesman said: 'The first we were aware of what happened was when someone came into the reception area to say a naked man was beating up a woman outside the hospital.
'Staff rushed out to see what was happening and found the patient with blood streaming down his legs hitting the woman.
'He was stopped and the woman was taken in for treatment, and then we discovered she had chopped his penis off again.'

Romance / I Mistakenly Slept With My Ghanaian Church Member & Now I Am Pregnant by spymybox: 4:59pm On Mar 13, 2015
Dear GC Readers,

I am 3 months pregnant and even though my boyfriend who I have been with for almost 2 years is extremely happy about this, I am really worried since I made the biggest mistake of my life by sleeping with a friend from Church in December.

My boyfriend is white and he is supportive. He is currently helping me with my papers and I truly love him which may sound contradictory because I slept with someone. But like I said it was a mistake which I regret. It will never happen.

My biggest problem is what if the child is for the man from church who I mistakenly slept with? What if the child is born and he is black instead of being mixed as my boyfriend is a German?

I have been thinking about this and even though my friend says it’s not likely I got pregnant just that once that I mistakenly slept with someone else, I cannot sleep and this is really affecting my health.

I feel like telling my boyfriend I made a mistake last December and slept with someone. At least if we settle that and the child comes and he is black, I wouldn’t have a lot of questions being sent my way.

I don’t know if it is a good idea to tell him this; because what if he is the person responsible for the pregnancy? Telling him about this mistake will affect our relationship even if not today, in the future.

Please what should I do? Should I tell my boyfriend about this or just be mute and go through my pregnancy, praying that the baby turns out mixed.

Also, is the anyway I can know if the baby is black or mixed before birth? My friend said my heartbeat can be used to determine this by some people who are good at this.

Agriculture / Farm Aid And Family Farmers Discuss A Different Vision Of Agriculture In Context by spymybox: 9:38am On Mar 07, 2015
As GOP presidential hopefuls descend on Iowa to participate in the first Iowa Ag Summit, Farm Aid is calling for a different conversation about food and farm policy.

"The concept of an agricultural summit is a good one, but the Iowa Ag Summit is likely to focus on feeding corporate interests, rather than the interests of family farmers and all of us who eat," said Farm Aid President and Founder Willie Nelson. "We invite the attendees to instead have a conversation that examines what policies are needed to support a family farm-centered vision of agriculture. Let's create a future that is guided by family farmers and supported by policies that promote access to land, credit and fair markets."

Interview Availability
In the lead-up to the Iowa Ag Summit, Farm Aid offers interview availability to discuss an alternative perspective on the future of agriculture that is locally controlled and sustains the health of soil, water, communities and rural economies for future generations.

George Naylor has raised non-GMO corn and soybeans on his family's farm in Greene County, Iowa, since 1976. He is a board member of the Center for Food Safety and a past president of the National Family Farm Coalition. George has been involved in farm activism for nearly 40 years.

Business / What You Need To Know About Business In Hong Kong And China Important Tips by spymybox: 11:00pm On Mar 03, 2015
Hong Kong is a home to a huge number of small and big Trading companies and dealing with them is often a lot easier than their counterparts in Mainland China.
Buying from a Hong Kong based supplier certainly do come with a set of benefits that is not to be expected when purchasing from suppliers in Mainland China. To begin with they are much easier to communicate with and the product knowledge is often much deeper than their Mainland counterparts.
Chinese manufacturers are still focusing on a “make to order” business model. This means that they don’t have an ongoing mass production but rely on their customers to provide them with clear (and realistic) products specifications. This includes, but is not limited to provide the supplier with clear product specifications can result in receiving products that are so bad that they are not sale able on western markets.
This is where Hong Kong traders come in. They are in general much more likely to ask the rights questions and understand your instructions than a supplier vice comes based on the Mainland. It would be fair to assume that better service comes with a higher price, but I cannot not say this is a pattern I’ve among Hong Kong suppliers.
Hong Kong and Mainland China boost each other’s economies and the two have good economics relations. The Hong Kong economy is characterized by low rates, free trade, and less government interference. Mainland China is Hong Kong’s largest trading partner and source of Foreign Direct Investment (FDI). The economy of Mainland China is more dependent on manufacturing .In recent years, the Mainland Chinese services sector has started to pick up. However, the share of services in the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) is much less than that of developed countries like the United State and Japan and also than that of developing countries like Brazil and India. Agriculture constitutes around 10 percent of China’s GDP while it is negligible in Hong Kong’s. Hong Kong in many respect is seen as a gate way to China for those who are interested in doing business on the Mainland or accessing Chinese stocks or investments. Hong Kong is also a preferred destination for listing Mainland Companies as the Chinese stock market are more conservative.

Travel / Dongguan The Commercial Sex Capital Of China. by spymybox: 2:41pm On Mar 03, 2015
Dongguan a city of nearly 7 million people situated at the center of the Southern China’s Guangdong Province. A list compiled by Amazon China ranked Dongguan, Foshan and Ningbo, China’s so called ‘Capital of sex’. The list is based on 2013 sales of love, wedding, and romantically themed books, e-books and CDs in cities of China. According to a report in Hong Kong’s South China Morning Post, some 300,000 sex workers operate in the streets, massage parlors, karaoke bars saunas and hotels of Dongguan and 800,000 people an extra ordinary 10 percent of the city’s population – are involved in the sex trade in one form or another. Dongguan has as well a variety of types of brothels, massage parlors, night clubs sauna centers and karaoke bars, the city has more than 120 - top end luxury hotels and hundreds of other mid – range places that offer illegal sexual services or lease floors to sex operators, and parts of the broader service sector benefit from the trade brought by visitors. Police operations to limit these activities were for a long time largely ineffective because many members of the local administration and other officials have business interests in the sectors. Sex services are estimated to contribute 20 to 30 percent of the total output of the city’s service industry. Another estimate put the sector’s contribution at 40 billion Yuan roughly 10 percent of Dongguan’s gross domestic product.

Investment / Regulating Labour Issues Between Chinese Employers And Their Nigerian Employees by spymybox: 1:31pm On Feb 24, 2015
Media is already a washed with rising cases of Chinese companies ill-treatment of Nigerian employees. The situation is gradually degenerating with little or no intervention from the rightful authorities. From Chinese construction firms to telecom companies and manufacturing companies, the situation is the same. Rising cases of internal disputes unmanaged has lead to physical abuses with casualties from both sides, most times these disputes instead of an an amicable solution being employed have been rather complicated by police intervention.
It is becoming very necessary that concrete action must be undertaken to intervene in the rising profile of these feuding parties. The recurring issues normally range from poor working benefits associated with high risk activities, poor salaries, poor working environment, owing contractors and in extreme cases physical abuses of employees.
While acknowledging the rising influx of Chinese foreign direct investment in the Nigerian economy and the resultant positive effects in employment generation the need to establish sound policies to protect the rights of Nigerian employees should never be undermined. The gains of foreign direct investment should not only be defined in terms of foreign exchange gains but must also reflect the overall satisfaction of Nigerian employees working in these foreign firms.
Labour unions must step up their roles in pressing forward the demands of the Nigerian worker irrespective of their background whether from the civil service or the private sector, Nigerians are the same everywhere. Both countries must demonstrate practical concern in resolving this situation which has the potential of affecting diplomatic relations.

Business / How Should You Pay When Importing From China by spymybox: 8:38pm On Feb 23, 2015
Payment Options
When we asked entrepreneurs if they wanted a comprehensive course on how to import from China, they all said yes. The biggest concern they had was payment. How should they pay their supplier. So we decided to make The truth is that there are many scammers online. And at the end of the day the only real way to protect yourself is to develop a relationship with your supplier and have that trust. Because let’s face it, if you send 10,000 USD to a supplier half way around the world, what is really stopping them from taking you money and disappearing?

A key rule is to always purchase a small order first. Do a test payment to see how the suppler handles the orders. Make sure you do your background check and verify them as a legit supplier. Here is a list of of payment methods you should use when making payment overseas.

PayPal

You may think that people who don’t have PayPal are scammers. The truth is that it is kind of difficult to open a PayPal account in China. But many supplier do accept it. so if you can find those suppliers you are good. PayPal is great because they have an awesome depart for scams and you can open up a dispute. While you may not always win, you are more protected with PayPal then sending a money order or doing Western Union. They have shifted more to a buyer friendly structure. So the power is on your side.

Escrow

What is escrow? With escrow you send the money to a 3 rd who holds the funds. the funds are only release when you confirm that y0u have received your items and they are satisfactory. This is the safe payment method because you pay when you get your product. AliPay is Alibaba’s escrow service. I have used it a couple times to get some watches and to do big order of adhesive collar strips. No problems.

If a supplier doesn’t do escrow or just accepts Western Union or Money Gram, it is possible you can pay and not hear from them again. If someone is selling you Beats by Dre and you can only pay them with wire transfer, you are going to get scammed. No if, ands, or buts about it. For one they should n’t be selling a branded product and not wanting to give you that extra layer of protection is a sure tell sign of a scammer.

Wire Transfer

So with this method of payment you are send money from your bank account to a supplier’s bank account. Sounds a little fishy? Well it depends. To start if offers NO protection from scammers.

You should only do this with suppliers you trust. When we did the Alibaba Crash Course, I had a chance to interview Ajit Nawalkha of Mindvalley Productions. He imports and manufactures for people. He said that he does wire transfers with suppliers now who he has done business with for long periods of time. The wire transfers are automatic.

These transfers take 3-5 business days and the transfer fees with vary from bank to bank. Fee will vary depending on your bank. You should alway be sending money to a business account, never a personal one.

Credit/Debit cards

Think of this as another layer of protection. Its one of the safest ways to operate. Why? Because you are using other people’s money. And banks don’t play about their money.

Chinese companies may be a little hesitant, but American companies usually won’t have a problem with it. Legit companies who accept credit cards, more than likely haver a merchant account and had to go through verification to get it.

There are a couple reasons you may want to use credit cards when dealing with suppliers. One is the added layer of protection. If you use this with PayPal, you have two layers of protection. Most companies will do a charge back if something goes wrong with your order. So the advantage is on your side. next advantage is that you can use points. Edmund recently realized that he has tons of points from all the order he has made over the years.

Taxes
Look out for taxes when importing from China. Like regular income taxes, you can be so caught up that you “forget” it. The taxes you will deal with

Import Duty
A tax collected on imports and exports by Customs of a country. It is based on the value of goods or the weight, dimensions, or other criteria of the item such as its size. It is also called tariff or import tariff. This tax is used to raise state revenue.

These import duties vary based on the product. Check the rates with http://www.dutycalculator.com/

Value Added Tax (VAT)
A type of consumption tax that is placed on a product whenever value is added at a stage of production and at final sale. Value-added tax is most often used in the European Union.

Here is an example. A computer is built by a company in Europe the manufacturer is charged a value-added tax on the suppliers purchased to produce the computer. Once the Computer reaches store display, the consumer who purchases it must pay the value-added tax. VAT is the value of the good + the shipping + the import duty.

The purpose of VAT is to generate tax revenues to the government similar to the corporate income tax or the personal income tax. A VAT is like a sales tax the consumer sees. It differs from the sales tax in that, with the later, the tax is collected and remitted to the government only once, at the point of purchase by the end consumer. This tax is paid every time an order is made.

To put it in to perspective, VAT was implemented in China in 1984. In 2007, the revenue from VAT was 15.47 billion yuan ($2.2 billion). It made up 34 % of China’s total tax revenue for the year. Thats a lot of cash!

Technology Market / Umbrella Vending Machine by spymybox: 9:58pm On Feb 20, 2015
The innovation of this machine helps in total eliminating of dripping water from wet umbrellas during the rainy season. When coming into the office building, banking hall, shopping centre, hotels etc, drop of water from the wet umbrella can cause damage to all valuable documents. The worst of all is that the floor becomes slippery and dangerous to workers and also to customers. This machine doesn’t shock because it does not use electricity and it is easy to operate. The machine normally comes with some bags (big and small) which enable one to rap his/her umbrella and drop it into the machine.
