Doing simple maths with our propped up Naira value then and now, we see a Naira that was supported to exchange for around N450 artificially sharply move to around N1550 after floating.

The above means we magnified our actual size by around 3.5 times all the while we were claiming to be the biggest in Africa. We weren't even in the top 5 in Africa.

Saying we were once Africa's biggest economy was very inaccurate. All the time the average Nigerian was reported to be surviving on around $2/day, it was actually around $0.55/day without the exchange rate altering Naira defence in place.

You take dollar from crude sales and forcefully use it to bring naira to a dollar rate to N450 when same Naira could have gone for around N1600 it currently is going for. That means we expanded the value of our economy by 3.5 and were never really Africa's largest economy or even in the top 5. If the government can pay subsidy on imported fuel, why not allow Dangote refinery refine crude and pay him that subsidy instead. At least the money remains in the country.

They forgot that the govt have four refineries under them that can cancel out any perceived monopoly from Dangote. This whole desperation is driven by two things. Greed of those in power for personal gain and Need to offset the financial pressure they find the system in.
