If they exports refined crude, fine. That's because inflow of dollar/forex will increase supply and relax the demand from Dangote himself. Two forces moving in two directions to create a double sided Naira strengthening effect.

Commonsensical thing to do if boycotted locally but a boycott is only possible if they getting it cheaper elsewhere and that could mean Dangote going well above intl market prices OR he refuses to leave the part of the old part of the cost component that goes to intl movement of crude/petrol in the old arrangement.

Why should he refine below intl price when he buys crude at 2-4 usd a barrel above intl price?

I think you are right in your thinking. We must start looking at adding value to natural resources and raw materials to derive real values. However, his proposal looks good too. VAT is purely a consumption tax so, the more you consume, the more you pay. Who are the big consumers ? Obviously the rich and unfortunately a lot of them may not be paying personal income tax or they may have a means of playing around with Personal Income tax. So if the recommendation is implemented, we might end up taxing the rich more which is quite good and then reduce the tax burden on the middle class and low income earners. Even corporate tax is recommended to go down. The real challenge is informal taxes on the poor and corporate bodies. How is government going to get these guys to stop their nefarious activity which has been a part of us for ages ?

VAT we have here is largely down to buying and selling. That's akin to taxing people for survival and not prosperity.

The fate of SMEs, salary earners like teachers etc should remain the same if NNPC will be honest enough to buy from dangote6 at same price they were buying from other foreign refineries they sold crude to at intl price. You sell to Dangote at $2pb-$4pb above intl price but want Dangote to sell directly to Nigerians at half the price you buy petrol, diesel from foreign refinery. Go and sleep.

That refinery employes mostly Nigerian unlike the ones we current buy from. The profit from that refinery will most likely build another employment-creating industry unlike the house owners in Dubai and London who loot us. That refinery will leave some byproducts that will go into fertilizers, plastic and cosmetics production thereby creating more industries.

True removal of subsidy should bring it closer to one dollar it is averaging globally. They may have to give crude to Dangote and cut a deal with him to give it back to them as petrol and diesel to remain in business.
