Programming › Re: ALX Africa Software Engineering Journey - From Zero To Hero! by Starrywells: 2:00pm On Sep 12, 2022 |
Sensivism: Introduction
I do not need to say my name, with time we will communicate on first name basis. But right now this is how my ALX Africa Software Engineering Journey began.
My crave for web development has been immense. Anytime i visit a website i always wonder what sorcery is going on there. I have tried all self learning and built some little projects on my own but my progress is not direct even with my wordpress skills.
I was just everywhere, from one language to the other but my hunger never diminished, not even for a day. I know i will learn the sorcery behind it all and i have actively chased anything that will set my path right.
I stumbled on ALX Software Engineering and i checked a lot about them from reviews and all. The curriculum is what appealed the most to me and i got hooked.
You see, my reason for joining is not for the job prospects. I just want to be able to build things, those software that will solve problems.
I have a business outlook to it all. You know, solve problems and people will pay for the solutions.
Thus, I did the application and it was successful with resumption on the 19th of September, 2022 but i had another problem ... I have a full time job, your ideal 9 - 5 and i do not know how i will balance the hours required by my job and ALX Software Engineering.
But being who i am, with a knack for crazy adventure and challenges. I have decided to take this head on.
I will do my job and i will conquer ALX Software Engineering. This is why i made this thread so i can be accountable to myself and YOU!
So if you are in my cohort and starting by 19th of September, 2022. This thread is for all for us, let us be accountable to ourselves.
What Have i done so far
I have gone on to study the following: - EMACS and VIM - Shell Commands - Git and GitHub - I am now studying C
My Strategy
My strategies are simple:
- Study Ahead - Do my tasks - Build Projects - Teach what i have learnt (You can only teach it when you understand it) - Solve problem for others - Actively engage with other learners
I cannot tell what will happen in 12 months but i have decided to take it day by day.
The journey of a thousand miles starts with a step!

Qtrpst4: Alx refused to take me because am above their age limit. This HOLBON do they have that limit? HOLBERTON is an/a (either American or British... I've forgotten...) standard software engineering bootcamp that was recently acquired by ALX (an African company that's into tech) I think the acquisition happened Early this year. So ALX is HOLBERTON nd HOLBERTON is ALX. Hence their certificate upon graduation carries " ALX nd HOLBERTON....." |

Anonymous6o6: Lol... Google Metaverse program, they train software engineers for 6months, you have to up and ready from 8am - 6pm I assume.
Even if 5 people graduate from Alx, they're human beings, one thing tho about the program is that, it is advisable to do it while you're unemployed.
I'm currently on the program, my 4th month actually. It hasn't been easily doing it while working an 8am - 8pm job but this is why ALX advise connecting with your peers. You can always meet them when struck.
Op probably didn't have close Colleagues in the program or never went to them when it was difficult.
airsaylongcome was right, passion will play a role in keeping you for a long time in the program. Anonymous6o6: Lol... Google Metaverse program, they train software engineers for 6months, you have to up and ready from 8am - 6pm I assume.

Hmmm... Me I no even know Wetin to talk sef.
Am aware the requirements of the course is absolutely herculean; but I believe that this kind of opportunity don't come twice. Training to become a software engineer is actually a wonderful thing, when u recall the fact that you can do MAGIC that may seem arcane to web developer. Truly, if we re really given to this tech thing, if truly we have the passion, if we really want to make it as far as tech is concerned, then we should be able to surmount whatever challenge that come our way... Like the last person said.."nothing good comes easy".
There's a prestige that that title - Software engineer bestow on you. It is even better when truly, you know your onions as a software engineer. Talk about the edge, the preference, the pay, easy aceing of interviews that may seem gross for a web guy.
The perks are gigantic... Hence with great power comes great responsibility!!!
Where would you even get a curriculum for software engineering? But alx did all the hard stuff by curating an actual curriculum for it. I know certificate doesn't matter in tech, but hey! A certificate attesting that you graduated from HOLBERTON(u can Google it) nd ALX as a software engineer is never a little feat!!! It speaks volumes of your capabilities. Among the perks, u re also added to the ROOM , where you get to connect with top companies very easy. The traditional stress of bombarding job sites with application would be cut off. What's more interesting is the fact that you have advocates that re going to speak for u there, nd the companies already know the caliber of students that re being produced by alx. Interview? Piece of cake!!! (David, one of the graduate was immediately taken by Amazon) I once saw an Ethiopian nursing mother that graduated from the program!
In conclusion, What the Op was true, but wat the last person (airslaygon......) Said is truest!!!
(If there's anything like that) |

DDayve: I am sorry to dispute you my brother. Html, CSS nor JavaScript. Non of them is hard or difficult. Just that you must jack before you understand and know it. All this video tutorial just makes those stuff look difficult. Truth be told, we need all the video tutorial. Many a time, video tutorial skips prerequisite topics making assimilation difficult. I am a newbie too, how do I cope? Firstly, I used W3Schools to study all the basics of what I need, W3Schools takes everything step by step. When I am done, I proceed to video tutorial. At the end I only learn applications and a few new things in the video as I already learnt and understood majority from W3Schools. The right tutorial also helps. Some tutors are only good at programming but not good at teaching. Teaching in the sense of organising their topics and codes. If you learn with the wrong tutorial, you will hate programming. I am a victim but I already made up my mind before embarking on this so I had only one option. Thank God for God, I am on frameworks now building some projects using the MERN stack. Secondly, do not depend on one tutor, learn from different tutors. As a newbie, any tutor you watch teaching, seems so overly good until you try another. I thought Mosh was over good until I tried Andrei. I also thought Andrei was overly good until I tried Brad. But this Brad guy, is over bursting my brain. Can u drop links to web tutorials taken by Brad? Help a brother please! |

Data science/data analytics could be described as a gold mine. Everything around us generates tons of data in milliseconds. Businesses need these data to refined to understandable facts which will drive their decision making process. Equipping your self with this skill is only the right thing to do. You can write, you can make hair, but I bet you that very soon, AI ND robots will takeover those stuffs. (There's already an AI that review law cases, thus stealthily eliminating the need for lawyer). While not learn how to operate these futuristic machines by leveraging data science. I want you to think long term. You migration dream could also be actualized by numbering data scientist/analytics I'm your skill set. Apart from working for high pay, you could build your own startup. Think if it. You gather around you a team of like minds ND set out to achieve something great. Am currently taking Google ND IBM data science/analytics certification courses. I already have some projects (a potential startup ) which I will build with my team. You can also join us if you wish who knows? The next CEOs of a mind-blowing establishment could come from us. In all I wish you success not luck. |

Patrioticman007: Jesus son of Mary said " he without sins, should cast the first stone".
The evils of Christianity is still unmatched. 1. Adolf Hitler a Christian caused the death of more than 70,000,000. Souls during the WWII.
2. The Crusade wars led by Catholic church caused the death of more 15,000,000. Souls.
3. The transatlantic slave trade led by the church caused the death of more than 50,000,000 souls & destruction of lives in Africa.
4. The constitadors led by church of Spain killed & estaminated more than half the population of south Americans & lastly the neocolonialism is still unmatched. The above facts are meant for minds that will Google them before insulting Islam. Speaking of the crusades; what do you do when a certain ideology threatens to wipe you off the face of the Earth? Keep mute, with arms folded and watch them butcher you? I know you would choose a better option. |

HellVictorinho: Maybe, you should ask him what he means by that
Some people actually think 'school na scam' because their teachers are poor compared to some other people.
They think "school na scam' because not everyone that attended school has millions while some that are not as good as their teachers towards reading and writing have millions as a result of luck.
I won't say 'school na scam' because the school was never a guarantee of an exposure to something that will make you a millionaire.
The school was never defined as an exposure to something useful towards EVERYBODY becoming a millionaire.
If you come across what you can use to make millions, it's a matter of chance.
If you don't come across what you can use to make the millions, it's still a matter of chance.
Whether you like or not , you will require the knowledge of certain things to survive and that knowledge is either derived from school or private lessons/tutorials or one-on-one sessions because you can't be aware of the position of every necessary item which means you can't find everything you need by yourself
You will have to ask questions about what you have not seen even though it's in your environment since you have limits.
Nobody is independent of learning certain things. Wisdom!! |

CodeTemplar: I spotted something strange. The article says same company is behind about 5 leading milk brands in Nigeria. That is like a disguise of monopoly. One big company wants monopoly of the market and therefore creates many of the same product under different names, thereby giving the public the perception of a competitive market. You've got brains. |

Remitush: There are several clubs and rooms in clubhouse app you can learn a lot and even pitch your ideas if you think you have a sound idea.
To pitch your idea as a Nigerian to investors abroad is nearly impossible. Those who have been lucky so far are very very few and they go through rigorous process. Most times some countries are flagged and priorities are given to western countries.
In club house app, you get to speak to these investors and even connect with them freely.
Just make sure your idea is very sound, because a lot of people will be listening. Don't go and embarrass yourself.
Also, there are other room and clubs that I have found very interesting.
There is a club that focus on careers in tech and Remote opportunities for unpopular Tech Jobs that companies are looking for and willing to pay more.
This club talks about all the tech jobs that most people have refused to look into. Because everyone is talking about javascript or data analytics everybody's attention is on it. But what everyone fails to realise is, there are other roles too that even pay more than these popular ones and the reason they pay higher is cos there are very few people qualified for it.
So while you are looking at switching careers, know that regardless of your educational background, anyone can break into tech and get a very decent pay if they have the right information and mentor.
I currently work remotely as a Salesforce administrator. Got this job on indeed.com right after I received my training from a tech mentor whom I connect with at the NGO I was formerly working. She also runs the club (link already shared) on clubhouse.
One thing I can say is there is a huge difference between watching tutorial videos on YouTube or website and having a mentor guide you through a path.
I have the clubhouse app, but I've not gotten an invite. Please do well to invite me sir. |
