The National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) says that works on the N10 billion inland ports under construction in Baro, Lokoja and Ogoja will be completed in 2017. The Managing Director of NIWA, Boss Mustapha, disclosed this in Lokoja on Wednesday while addressing newsmen. Mustapha said that works on the ports at Baro, Lokoja and Ogoja had reached 98 per cent, 57 per cent and 75 per cent respectively. He put the contract sums of the ports at Baro, N3.5 billion; Lokoja, N4.1 billion, and Ogoja, N2.7 billion. He said that all the ports would be completed in the 2017 fiscal years, adding that the they would be provided with other auxiliary facilities. The NIWA managing director also said that the augury port in Imo had reached 70 per cent completion stage while the Onitsha port had been completed and was ready for use. According to him, NIWA has received a certificate of compliance from the regulator, saying that the process of concessioning the port to a private operator will commence soon. When completed, the port will service the entire market in the South East while 10 other jetties are also being constructed across the country. Mustapha expressed the hope that the ongoing process to amend the law establishing the organisation by the National Assembly would enable it to resolve problems of overlapping of responsibilities and other conflicts within the maritime sector. https://www.businessdayonline.com/n10bn-baro-lokoja-ogoja-ports-ready-2017-niwa-2/

President Muhammadu Buhari is to declare open the South-East Economic and Security Summit (SEESS), scheduled to hold in Enugu on Dec.22. Mr Tony Usidamen, the media consultant, via a statement made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Enugu, said other eminent Nigerians would attend the event. He said that the president’s desire to attend the summit was in demonstration of his interest in maintaining peace and fostering economic growth and development in the South-East and other regions. Usidamen said that the summit was aimed at addressing the real development issues in the region as well as proffer lasting solutions to them. “President Muhammadu Buhari will lead other eminent personalities and delegates to attend the maiden summit holding at the Enugu State Government House. “Former President, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo and all governors in the region as well as several eminent personalities and delegates will be in attendance to discuss issues of common interest.” He stated that such issues as security, agriculture, infrastructure, health, tourism, as well as financing the region’s economic programmes would be in the front burner during the event. “The Chairman of SEESS Group, Prof. Barth Nnaji, has assured that the summit will be a meeting where specific problems are defined and measures to address them adopted,” Usidamen added. NAN reports that the summit is an `invitation-only’ event, with delegates drawn from the various interest groups in the region. Nnaji at the head of this thing gives it great credibility. A solid technocrat and intellectual, Nnaji gives confidence to Southeasterners who want to put their dollars into meaningful projects, but are wary of the compromised and unprincipled Southeast political class. Southeast wealth in the Global Southeast Diaspora is estimated at over $20 billion. Just a couple of years ago, Chinedu Echeruo, a high tech guru, sold his high tech firm to Apple for a cool $2 billion. Chinedu would probably invest some of this money in the Southeast, where his dad once served as VC at Imo State University during the Mbakwe Administration, with a guy like Nnaji, an award winning Professor of Robotics engineering, at the helm of SEESS. Nnaji must be given every support to succeed. He is for all intents and purposes now the Governor of the Southeast economy. The Southeast technocratic and intellectual classes must not hang him out to dry in his coming battles with the Southeast’s political prostitutes and Judases who would sell their brothers down the river for crumbs from the tables of the enemies of the Southeast. At last, the Southeast’s epileptic and incoherent economic machine is now in the hands of a solid guy. It’s a great day for the Southeast and kith and kin in Rivers and Delta states. - matt |
Enugu—Chairman, South East Economic and Security Summit Group, SEESS, Prof. Barth Nnaji, has said governors in the zone are committed to security and economic development in the region. He said the maiden security and economic summit scheduled for December 22 in Enugu, was organised as part of the governors’ determination to move the region forward. Nnaji told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Enugu, yesterday, that the summit was aimed at building peace and engendering progress and development in the zone. The former minister of power said the event would also address the real security and economic issues affecting the advancement of the region. Nnaji, who is the chairman of Geometrics Power Ltd., said the conveners were made up of top business, military, political, religious and community leaders from the region. He said: “The summit has the full commitment and support of the governors from the zone and is endorsed by the Federal Government. “We hope to use the summit to identify the real issues affecting the peace and development of the region, proffering solutions and initiating a definitive course of action to addressing them.” Nnaji said that the summit would adopt pragmatic measures to address issues of growth and human empowerment in the region. “It will not be a mere talk-shop but a meeting where specific problems are defined and key areas of focus will include security, agriculture, infrastructure, health tourism, and financing the region’s economic programme. “Delegates for SEESS 2016 will be drawn from the leaders of the South East, Presidency, National Assembly, state governments and the diplomatic community,” he said. He said that top local and international business leaders and investors, multinational corporations, bankers and financiers, the academia, security experts and others would also be in attendance. Nnaji said that governors from the zone had shown the desire to build a formidable economic integration in the area. “We are grateful to Gov. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu State for graciously accepting to host the event as well as all the other governors from for backing the initiative. “Their collective support underlines the huge significance of the summit not only for the region but for the entire nation,” Nnaji said. One week after Amnesty International (AI) released a report which indicted Nigerian security forces, especially the Nigeria Army, of killing unarmed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) protesters in Abia State, Senators from the South-East are reportedly pushing for a federal probe. Besides, Senators from the geo-political zone have also planned to formally raise a motion on the matter in the chamber. In addition, Daily Sun gathered that they will push for other sanctions against security agencies indicted in the report by AI. South-East caucus members who will sponsor the motion include Enyinnaya Abaribe (Abia South) who doubles as chairman of the caucus, Ike Ekweremadu (Enugu West), Hope Uzodinma (Imo West), Andy Uba (Anambm South), Sunny Ogbuoji (Ebonyi South) and Gilbert Nnaji (Enugu East). Others are Mao Ohuabunwa (Abia North), Theodore Orji (Abia Central), Samuel Anyanwu (Imo East), Stella Oduah (Anambm North), Benjamin Uwajumogu (Imo North), Chukwuma Utazi (Enugu North), Sam ngu (Ebonyi North) and Obinna Ogba (Ebonyi Central). According to the report released by AI, over 150 unarmed protesters were killed by security agents. A lawmaker from the South East, who is familiar with details of the proposed motion, told Daily Sun that the lawmakers intend to mount pressure on the Federal Government to set up a judicial panel of inquiry to investigate the killings as contained in the Amnesty AI report within two weeks. “We will urge the Federal Government to restrain its law enforcement agents from applying extreme force in the containment of peaceful protest,” the senator noted. It was gathered that Abaribe has received a comprehensive report from officials of AI, who paid him a courtesy visit on Monday, “to furnish him with details of their findings in the South-east.” Abaribe had, last Tuesday, raised a motion under Matters of National Importance, and urged Senate to debate the AI report. His plea was adopted by the Senate. Senate President, Bukola ruled that the motion will be debated this week. It is, however, unclear if it will come up before the end of this week. http://sunnewsonline.com/ai-report-seast-senators-push-for-fg-probe/ |
