Apart from that, attacking a soft spot is not a big deal. Ukraine was being crushed in all the fronts and therefore looked for a place with no Russian regulars and opened a new front there. Ukraine has a huge shortage of man power so in the long run this plays into Russia's interests. Russia avoided the emotional male karen mistake of pulling troops away from the front to face the distraction in Kursk, instead Russia has sent fresh troops to the new front. It's all about strategy, not about PR.

Check out what Israel has been doing in Gaza and tell me if you think Russia has been that wicked with ukraine! In 2 months of conflict, Israel killed many times more civilians than Russia in 2 years of fighting. While Russia has much more firepower than Israel and could more than flatten Ukrainian population centres like Israel did in Gaza.
