So long you have been commissioned and you haven't resigned and you haven't been sacked and you are alive, you are a soldier on duty. You can be away with a leave or without a leave. Your status to the rest of the world would still be that of soldier of the country which employs you.

Foreign nationals fighting for you does not mean that the foreign nation is fighting for you. Both Russia and Ukraine have foreign fighters fighting for them. Some fighters for Ukraine just happen to be from NATO nations.

A president in paris also alluded to the fact he and other presidents of NATO countries already had troops fighting alongside Ukraine in an unofficial mission. Armenia, Belarus and Kyrgyzstan are breakaway regions of Russia. Is Japan a breakaway region of the USA ? Also, I'm not aware of any russian military base in Belarus, rather Belarus is in a military alliance with Russia and hosts russian military personnel on Belarusian military bases. Armenia asked for russian peacekeepers to protect it against Azerbaijan (an other breakaway region of Russia). I don't have any information about Kyrgyzstan having russian military bases or not... But nafo does not appreciate history.
