[s]A CALL FOR BUHARI’S RESIGNATION.

It is more than one month since Muhammadu Buhari hopped off to London for medical treatment. The letter he sent to the Senate seeking leave shouldn’t have sailed as it was vague, improperly drafted and made no helpful disclosure about Buhari’s state of health. Nonetheless, he got the leave and left Osinbajo holding the baby. The fact that the ball was rightly left in Osinbajo’s court does not nullify our extant laws nor does it throw any slur on the foresight of our founding fathers.

The framers of the 1979 constitution which influenced the subsequent 1999 constitution were very astute. They unambiguously outlined the grounds on which a president could be removed from office. One of such grounds is when the president gets swollen with excesses or is mired up in gross misconduct. Another is when the president by the reason of physical disability is rendered incapable of discharging the responsibilities of his office. The plain command of the constitution is that he be impeached. Other grounds for removal exist.

From every indication, Buhari is gravely and critically ill. His ability to carry on the awesome duties of the presidency is in question. One of the most basic features of a state is continuity. We must continue the forward thrust of this country irrespective of whose cage is rattled. Buhari cannot make an effective administrator by proxy. Osinbajo cannot continue to compensate for him as the wisdom of our founding fathers recognized the need for a president and a vice president. More than a hand is needed on the Nigerian deck.

It is a common practice around the world that presidents leave office when they become physically incapable. It is not peculiar to our jurisdiction. Woodrow Wilson’s unfortunate deed of keeping American people in the dark about an ailment provoked the 25th amendment to the constitution of the United States. It became enshrined in the American constitution that disability or incapacity would constitute a legal reason for resignation or impeachment. Still in American history, Dwight Eisenhower who was the American president between 1953-1961 once suffered a heart attack and promptly instructed his press secretary to inform Americans of his condition.

Buhari feels nothing for Nigerians but disdain. Everything an average Nigerian knows of Buhari’s health status proceeded from the grapevine. Buhari sees it as beneath his dignity to inform Nigerians on his health. He recently spoke to Donald Trump, a momentous phone conversation his supporters celebrated with great ecastcy. An old woman in Dura told news men that she speaks with her brother every day. The latest phone call he made was to his unthinking special adviser on media in which the ungrateful tyrant labelled Nigerians as mischief makers. In all these calls and hide and seek, Nigerians are not entitled to a wind about their own president. This is what obtains when dictatorship approached a people dressed in a deceptive democratic toga.

In all appearances, our president is dreadfully ill. No shadow of doubt remains as to whether there could be a finding for incapacity. Buhari should do the most needful and honourable thing. Nigeria is too sick a country to rely on the snail’s pace of another sick man. It would bespeak statesmanship and patriotism if at this critical juncture he accepts to step down and take a ringside seat. This was the same thing Buhari himself adviced Yar’adua to do in 2010.

Vladimir Putin who outwardly looks the exact picture of heath is considering departing the public arena for what The Express described as “worsening health “. Looking at Putin he seems filled with vim and vigor. There is no detectable indication of physical unfitness. There was no pressure from the Russian population. The Russian rumour mill was never busy with Putin’s health. But as a thorough patriot Putin understands that a state’s ship does not sail fast if it is being paddled by a sick hand.

A man who puts country first, Putin is rearing a 43-year old Alexei Dyumin for the job of the presidency. Dyumin is not of the same extraction with Putin. He was the gallant commander of the Russian army’s special operation forces and now the virtuous governor of Tula region. Dyumin is a hulky, burly young man who overspills with energy. Putin trusts he could cut the mustard. This is the example of statesmanship.

What Buhari is doing now is a sit-tight thing. Convention, law and common sense clamour that he resigns. He is in no way different from Yahya Jammeh of Gambia whose stubborn government Buhari recently mobilized a fearsome contingent to browbeat out of office. Jammeh sat right after being voted out but Buhari is sitting tight after falling gravely ill. Let him resign.

War is a terrible thing I'm sure we'll all agree and Nigeria is witnessing its share however how small.
One of the negatives of war is the case of 'friendly fire'. Unlike the name there is nothing friendly about the fire, it is a term describing an incident where forces inflicts damage on its own side, this could be as a result of equipment malfunction, weather influence, poor navigation, and yes... human error. The damages can be inform of loss of lives, assets and others.
For those informed Nigeria recently experienced one involving the Airforce.
Before we start cursing... suffice to say not unique to Nigeria nor Third World Countries... below are similar occurrence across the globe.

In the Tarnak Farm incident of 18 April 2002, four Canadian soldiers were killed and eight others injured when U.S. Air National Guard Major Harry Schmidt, dropped a laser-guided 500 lb (230 kg) bomb from his F-16 jet fighter on the Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry regiment which was conducting a night firing exercise near Kandahar. Schmidt was charged with negligent manslaughter, aggravated assault, and dereliction of duty. He was found guilty of the latter charge. During testimony Schmidt blamed the incident on his use of "go pills" (authorized mild stimulants), combined with the 'fog of war'. The Canadian dead received US medals for "bravery", AND an apology.

In Sangin Province, [/b]a RAF Harrier pilot mistakenly strafed British troops missing the enemy by 200 metres during a firefight with the Taliban on 20 August 2006. This angered British Major James Loden of 3 PARA, who in a leaked email called the RAF, "Completely incompetent and utterly, utterly useless in protecting ground troops in Afghanistan".

[b]Operation Medusa (2006): 1 – Two U.S. A-10 Thunderbolts accidentally strafed NATO forces in southern Afghanistan, killing Canadian Private Mark Anthony Graham.

23 August 2007: A USAF F-15 called in to support British ground forces in Afghanistan dropped a bomb on those forces. Three privates of the 1st Battalion, the Royal Anglian Regiment, were killed and two others were severely injured. It was later revealed that the British forward air controller who called in the strike had not been issued a noise-cancelling headset, and while he supplied the correct target co-ordinates, in the confusion and stress of the battle incorrectly confirmed one wrong digit mistakenly repeated by the pilot, and the bomb landed on the British position 1000 metres away from the enemy. On 26 September 2007, British soldiers in operations in Helmand Province, Afghanistan, fired Javelin anti-tank missiles at Danish soldiers from the Royal Life Guards, killing two. It is also confirmed from Danish forces that the British fired a total of 6–8 Javelin missiles, over a 1½ hour period and only after the attack was completed did they realize that the missiles were British, based upon the fragments found after the incident.
