What I Know About Four Oil Wells In Cross River — Agba Jalingo

He wrote: “Four Oil Wells To Begin Drilling In Cross River State Within Weeks?” For those who have reached out to yours sincerely to ask questions about speculations that four oil wells are to start drilling in Cross River State within weeks, this is what I know.

In August 2023, the Press was informed that over 30 oil wells capped about 65 years ago by Shell Petroleum in Mbiabo Ikot Offiong community in Odukpani Local Government Area of Cross River State have been identified. Abandoned and out-of-use oil wells that have become harmful are usually “capped” to minimize the harmful effects on the surrounding communities.

Nigerian journalist and activist, Agba Jalingo, has explained to well-meaning Cross Riverians what he knows about the four oil wells and whether the said oil wells will start drilling in three weeks as announced by Governor Prince Bassey Otu or not. Jalingo, in an article titled “Four Oil Wells To Begin Drilling In Cross River State Within Weeks?” posted on his official Facebook page sighted by News Week Nigeria, said that while he can not confirm whether drilling will commence in the stated timeframe, urged Cross Riverians not to doubt but rather have faith in the governor’s commitment to restoring Cross River as an oil-producing state. He wrote: “Four Oil Wells To Begin Drilling In Cross River State Within Weeks?” For those who have reached out to yours sincerely to ask questions about speculations that four oil wells are to start drilling in Cross River State within weeks, this is what I know. Cross River to begin crude oil drilling in three weeks — In August 2023, the Press was informed that, over 30 oil wells were capped about 65 years ago by Shell Petroleum in Mbiabo Ikot Offiong community in Odukpani Local Government Area of Cross River State have been identified. Abandoned and out-of-use oil wells that have become harmful are usually “capped” to minimize the harmful effects on the surrounding communities. The Clan Head of Mbiabo Ikot Offiong, Etubom Nya Asuquo, who is also the immediate past Nigerian Ambassador to Uganda, and the former lawmaker representing Calabar/Odukpani Federal Constituency in the National Assembly, told the Press that: “over the past eight years, I have been working to make sure that Cross River State becomes an oil-producing state again. I have been working on it and I identified two oil fields in Cross River State, which I registered in what is now called NUPRC (a Federal Government entity that registers and gives licenses for oil exploration). “I registered two oil fields in the Nigerian Oil Concession Map in 2018 and the two oil fields I registered were OPL 2020, which is the oil field established in Ikot Offiong territory, and OPL 2021 which spans from Adiabo towards Akpabuyo. The fight between Ikot Offiong in Cross River and Oku Iboku in Akwa Ibom is a result of that oil field that we have.

“We have registered those oil fields and I have been in discussions with our state governor, that he should take over the matter from where I have reached to the next level and that is for him to get the Federal Government to allocate those oil fields to companies because it is only the Federal Government that has that power to allocate oil fields to companies for exploration. We are now waiting for the Federal government to allocate them so that work can start”. This is the much that I know. If four oil wells will start drilling in the State soon, that means the State Government may have been working since last August to add two to the two earlier registered. Whether the wells have been allocated to companies, I do not know. Whether they will start drilling in weeks, I also do not know. And since it is also reported that the governor himself is the one who let the cat out of the bag at a recent meeting he had with State APC stakeholders, we have no reason to doubt him until after the few weeks have elapsed. But on the whole, it will be a thing of great joy if our State is returned to the list of oil-producing States in Nigeria.

Cocoa prices soar to record highs as traders scramble for supplies

Global cocoa prices hit fresh record highs on Thursday as traders continued to scramble for supplies, predicting ever wider deficits this season and with concerns growing for the next.
The surge in prices is filtering through to retail shelves, with Hershey expecting to see a further slowdown in demand for its products from cash-conscious customers after its sales volumes slid 6.6% in the fourth quarter.

"Going back 47 years, almost every major price blip was followed by a massive 20-50% price break, within one to two years. Is this situation different? According to my sources in the cocoa bush of West Africa...YES!" said Jim Roemer, meteorologist and commodity trading advisor at Best Weather Inc.
"At least for now, a squeeze situation may well continue for another month or two," he added, citing current damage to the cocoa crop from strong Harmattan winds in top producing region of West Africa.

Benchmark London cocoa futures hit a record 4,670 pounds a metric ton during the session at the ICE exchange on Thursday, before closing at 4,660 pounds/ton, gaining 7.3% in the day. Prices have roughly doubled since the start of last year.
In New York, benchmark ICE cocoa futures hit a new all-time high of $5,874 a ton, closing up 7.3% at $5,805, having risen about 90% since the start of last year.
Exporters and pod counters in No. 2 cocoa producer Ghana told Reuters output for the current 2023-24 season is expected to reach just 475,000-500,000 tons versus 655,000 last year.

Last week, a Reuters cocoa poll forecasted a global deficit of 375,000 tons in the 2023/24 season, more than double the average view in the previous poll in August, and indicating a third successive supply deficit for the market.
An industry source told Reuters that traders feared the shortage would extend into next year, with missing volumes from this season's crop having to be filled with beans from the next.

Don't give women that attention they so much crave for, that's one of the ways to get them easily.

Thanks a lot guys for the responses. It's not a low self esteem issue for me. I'm just really confused about the behaviour. Kobojunkie said its an ego problem which seems to me like the winner here. I have to admit, I need to work n my social intelligence. But When we meet face 2 face, there doesn't seem to be any kind to malice. I just got a little confused.

I think Lagos to Kano was said to be the most profitable route in Nigeria in terms of trade.

The eastern route was supposed to be as competitive as Lagos-Kano. Unfortunately because of dilapidated infrastructure and the lack of investment, things have been really bad on that corridor.

That's why I think one of the major achievements of the previous admin was prioritizing security in GoG with led to massive investments in maritime and coastal security equipment.

Nigeria has been delisted from the maritime hotspot red list as a result.

I hope the blue economy of the eastern sector picks up because the major excuse for the lack of investment by FG and the private sector was maritime security. A problem that has been dealt with decisively.

Of course, what do you expect?

The price of a product is 164 in Nigeria, and the same product is selling for above 500 in Neighboring Benin and you expect the market not to take advantage of that? That's wishful thinking.

I can tell you for a fact that around 40-50% of Subsidized PMS is not sold in Nigeria.

If you factor in landing costs and logistics I think it's cost reflective. It's a small country and they have a very efficient port in Cotonou (Lagos has the lowest Petrol prices now because of its proximity to its port, storage, and logistics services, while Borno and Sokoto have the highest cost because of the aforementioned reasons).

There are 774 LGAs. Yes, Oil producing states receive 13% derivation from oil revenues as a result they are more financially buoyant than other non-oil-producing states.

You mean 4 to 8 trillion so each states will get additional 100 to 200B.The stupid subsidy was 12 billion dollars. This will huge boost for them. Now give each state power to fix electricity challenges.

I mean N400bn extra from the N600bn-800bn they usually got to share.

GeneralDae:

After all said and done the exchange rate (without subsidy) would still settle between 500-600 naira (or even better with some reforms), which is just at the middle between 460 and 700 naira.

We'll see what will happen with time. The states especially would breathe a sigh of relief. They were really struggling to meet their debt obligations, pay salaries on time, and implement their budget. With the subsidy gone, that would mean they get to share an extra N400bn which would mean a lot to the new admins, civil servants and pensioners in particular who have had their salaries delayed or not been paid at all sometimes running Into months.

GeneralDae:

Instead of devaluing outrightly, I think they should find a way to make the black market fall instead. In the end, we may have it settle between 500-600 naira.

It's the official rate that would come closer to the black market rate, not the other way around. That's the only way to make the rates converge. They could try to attract Dollars into the economy to reduce demand but for that to happen, a lot of reforms need to be implemented. Truth is if the currency is around to float, it's the market that would decide what the rates would be. Not the CBN governor or the president.

Biggest benefit will be lack of petrol queues - subsidies just create huge mess. Secondly, 12B savings hopefully will be invested in electricity.

I'm really happy he had the balls to do it. His first meeting was with the CBN governor and the GMD NNPC. it all seems the naira has been pegged closer to or around N600/1.

In the coming months, Fx arbitrage should be gone too, that was very wasteful and only benefitted the elite.

Took you so long to realize this. Did you ever go to school? Yes let hope the 12B subsidy will now go to your gov - not end up IN DANGOTE for his expensive refined fuel.

The NMDPRA would begin to Issue import licenses to anyone who wants to bring in the product. The market is now fully deregulated. This is 46 years in the making. Dangote would have to compete with other marketers if his products don't cut it, he should export it to gain Fx. The Saudis and Indians are making a killing by exporting their diesel and importing cheap Russian petroleum products

https://oilprice.com/Energy/Energy-General/Saudi-Arabia-Is-Profiting-From-Its-Record-High-Diesel-Trade.html

He will also have to contend with the NNPC for market share. The Port Harcourt refinery would soon come online. demand and supply.

Kenya - Heading for bankruptcy.

South Africa - Economic recession

Another day in the life in Kenya.

Kenya's sugar retail prices remain high despite duty-free imports

Duty-free sugar imports, which were allowed into Kenya from January, have failed to cool off high retail prices. Data from the Sugar Directorate indicates that the volumes imported between January and March were 93,000 tonnes against 46,000 in a similar period last year. The sharp increase in import volume was on the back of the waiver on duty to allow the shipping of cheap commodities to address a shortage th has kept prices high. The directorate says the average pric sugar is Ksh157 ($1.15) a kilogramm up from Ksh150 ($1.10) in January, citing the rising cost of a shortage locally. Duty-free import of sugar is part of a wider government plan to lower the high cost of goods.

Locally, production has been inhibited by diminishing cane supply on the farms. The shortage of cane has seen millers grapple with the little available pushing the price of a tonne of the commodity from Ksh4,584 ($33.58), which is the recommended price by the sugar directorate, to Ksh5,250 ($38.4)
The diminishing supply of cane to factories, which has cut down on production activities, saw the total sum bagged in the review period decline by 26 percent to 49,761 tonnes. The decline in production will compel consumption due to low supply in the market. Outside Comesa The first two vessels with more than 42,000 tonnes of sugar docked in February to ease the pain of the decline in production by local millers. The government opened an import window in December that would see traders ship in 100,000 tonnes of sugar outside of the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (Comesa region to curb an imminent shortage the country that had pushed up the cost of the sweetener to Ksh312 ($2.29) fo two-kilo packet. The state has also allowed the Kenya National Trading Corporation to impo a further 200,000 tonnes duty-free.
