Okay. I dont think problem is technical - I think problem is commercial- it starts with metering - and until that is sorted - this yet another wasteful expenditure like Obasanjo one.

The solution has to start in installing pre-paid meters - and sending army or someone to remove all illegal connections - and making it illegal to connect illegally.

Once you do that - supply companies - will have money to pay distribution companies - who will then run the turbines. With money flowing - they will then have money to invest in technical stuff.

But if you think the problem is transformers/turbines/transmission wires - you're going NOWHERE. Broke supply and transmission companies will not run the turbines or have staff to fix transmission issues.

The total cost for Nigeria to fix electricity issues - is zero - just send the army with power companies armed with millions of pre-paid meters - and within a week - Nigeria's power companies will be swimming in money.
Over 6m meters are being currently installed all around the country, it's a holistic plan.

https://punchng.com/world-bank-cbn-fully-funding-six-million-meters-fg/

Generation is being upgraded.

Transmission and distribution, these things take time

You've met Nigerians, very impatient.

They were subsidies on power too, they have been successfully eradicated, so as far as the ongoing installation of prepaid meters is a success, Discos would start running a profitable business for the first time.

if the state has to bail out private companies then those companies are not private and the market is not capitalistic in nature.
The industry is just a huge mess.

The he is the best. Electricity issues will for example be sorted by dealing with supply/distribution and generation companies issues. Those are business that are inefficient - and you need a business mind to figured it out.

The same way Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala fixed Nigeria banking - and now it's the only sector in Nigeria thriving - is what is required in other sectors.
The power issues are currently being sorted

Nigeria got a deal from Germany to upgrade its transmission lines(largely the cause of power outages and grid collapses)

Similar to the one Egypt got. A $2.3bn deal(Technology transfer + 50% local content)

https://new.siemens.com/ng/en/products/energy/topics/presidential-power-initiative-nigeria.html

Although Mr. Tinubu would take all the credit, the first set of transformers would be arriving in the country in Q4.

Those are minor issues - how it sold - and for how much - is irrelevant. This something that is choking Nigeria economy.

You should not care who get it. Most of the time whoever get it will become saddled with debts - and huge staff - and will spend years cleaning it up - court cases and name it.

What you should focus is the objective of that privatization. If for example inefficient gov refineries will allow more Dangote to invest in the sector - then Dangotes or private investors - will create more efficient refineries.
The refineries are not working because of the subsidies.

Nigeria's downstream sector is comatose, largely because pump prices are fixed.

It is Nigerians themselves(The labor unions cheering from the front) that are the stumbling block to subsidy removal.

According to the Petroleum industry Act(PIA) subsidies were supposed to be gone 6 months ago.

They threatened now the state would have to spend +$7bn on subsidy this year alone.

Let the subsidies go, even the state would be able to run those refineries efficiently (although they are now the assets of NNPC Ltd, which is technically not owned by the state, courtesy of the PIA)

Pipelines transporting white products are about to be privatized so privatization of state assets is ongoing.

The purpose of privatization is not for gov to make money. I can understand Russia type of messed up privatization but overriding reason of privatizing state own companies is to free the economy - to broaden capitalism - and that is magic that will create more companies/wealth.

Nigeria Gov should sell most of it's SOEs for one Naira....and move on. SOEs not only stymie the economy - they also become an albatross as it saddle gov with debts, guarantees and occasional bailout.

Sell nearly all SOES - and focus on being a regulator - capitalism or free market - will work the magic. If you privatize but still do not allow free market to thrive - then that is huge Russia like mess. Otherwise if Atiku bought gov SOES for cheap - but everyone is allowed to compete - soon his companies will go down - because the market economy is VERY BRUTAL.
Tinubu is a textbook capitalist.

Nigerian political parties are not ideological, it's just different gangs of the elite class hustling for power for the sake of it.

To run the country the way they feel would be best.

I have no problem with this.

A lot of those assets are a liability to the state.

Like the refineries for instance(spending $ms to pay union workers for doing nothing)

But it should be done in a proper manner where all investors are given a level playing field and the best emerges.

If precedence is anything to go by, it will not be favourable to Atiku.

exactly what the word suggests... If politicians have their hands in the cookie jar then it isn't free of Government influence... And thus does not adhere to the definition of privatization/ capitalism.
Tinubu is also a major proponent of privatization and less state interference in business.

This was what boosted investor confidence and what ultimately transformed the fortunes of Lagos.

Even Buhari who is traditionally conservative has piloted several privatization initiatives.

Nigeria's power challenges are largely linked to the privatization of the National power company.

He led the committee that sold state assets to politically exposed persons(his cronies) with no capital to invest and sustain the business.

Now the state has to pay $bns of bailouts to these failed companies to run their business.

Now he is proposing to do more damage to critical sectors of the economy

Okey actually made some sense here..that's the true federalism we talking about..it will also help decentralize a lot of things to reduce the workload at the top.
"True federalism" is what politicians throw about once in a while to stir up the polity and distract Nigerians.

The State government has a lot of powers, they will be more powers given to them if the Constitutional amendment bill is passed.

It would also make the local government and Judiciary autonomous by law, freeing them from the seemingly perpetual captivity by the governors.

Look at how the governor has everyone distracted with all eyes on Abuja.

I'm sure your State governorship election would likely be a rubber stamp.

Damn, I'll bet all I've got that you don't know the name of your councilors or Chairman or even. worse what they look it.

But your local politicians got you sweating about Abuja (where the vast majority of Nigerians only watch on teli).

Governance is local, if it doesn't work there it will never work.

they have no manifestos to campaign with apart from their usual old tribalism and tribal card tactics.

But we'll remind them that tribalism won't bring back dollars to at least 400
tribalism won't bring back fuel to 95 naira
tribalism won't send our undergraduates back to school.
tribalism won't fix our security.
tribalism won't develop our economy.

2023 will be the youths vs the criminals
it won't be business as usual.
I find your naivety maybe its ignorance admirable.

So P.O will return the dollar to 400?

Or fuel price back to 90/litre?

Rainbows and unicorns, that's what you're been sold.

The economy doesn't work that way, it's only in the "ride under the sunset" story books you'll find this.

Nigeria has a huge budget deficit, partly due to oil subsidy payments.

If anything PMS prices would shoot up next year, as the subsidy would be eradicated.

The NLC(major backers of LP), also staunch socialists have no option but to back it.

So you better understand why you're voting, and why you're voting who you're voting so you don't get disappointed and begin to wail again.

I have criticized Buhari consistently from 2015 till date because I am fully convinced he has nothing to offer, but the greatest thing he has done politically is his refusal to sign that shit of legislation to allow official delegates who work for their masters be used to hijack the internal party primaries.
Nigerians don't understand how it is possible that your Governor decides who is your Senator, Rep members, even his successor in office. It is through special delegate status given to everyone in government whether elected or appointed to vote in their party's primaries. I don't have any issue with elected government official being a super delegate, what I have issues with is having unelected appointees and aides of the Governors and President such as Ministers, countless SAs, PAs, Governors aides, PAs and SA etc to flood the electoral process for their bosses. I heard of a Governor who printed appointed letter for more than a thousand persons as SAs and PAs all for the purpose of using then hijack voting in their State Congress and elect whoever the Governor wants as candidate of their party. This is what Buhari's refusal to sign the bill has come to stop. Their thousands of aides and PAs and SAs can't vote except they were elected at their Ward Congress. Kudos to Buhari on this

There are reports of very cheap fuel in Benin republic and Cameroon also, and you ask how is that possible? They are leveraging on our subsidy.
Subsidies should go but my advice is that we give it a 2 year plan, then invest heavily on CNG vehicles as alternatives and then also solve the problem of irregular power supply within 2 years. After that, then we can gradually remove subsidy in the petroleum sector.
Yes CNG is the way to go. We don't have any excuse, this is what the labour unions should be clamoring for.

The money we've spent on subsidies for the last 2 years would be enough to build the Lagos - Calabar railway without loans.

The same people that accuse Buhari of not running a completely liberal free economy want him to subsidize everything. Electricity, Fuel, Diesel, you name it. Nigerians sometimes don't know what they want.
If you visit Francophone countries, you'll ask yourself whether it's not the same Africa we are.

The cost of living in this country is so much cheaper here all thanks to the government subsidies.

If you ask me, it's these subsidies that are the major cause of our problems.

All our refineries are short down because of subsidy

Power is not working because of subsidies

CBN spends $2bn every year to subsidize the dollar for Nigerians

Nigeria subsidies petro for the whole Subregion, let some of these subsidies go, Mbanu. yet na still we go complain

Nigerian airlines are to suspend all flights from Monday over rising jet fuel prices, an umbrella organization of operators said on Saturday.

A classic blackmailing technique that has failed, the strike action has been suspended

AGO and diesel are not subsidized by the Govt like PMS.

Truckers are crying too, so do they want the Govt to return subsidies to diesel?

They should increase ticket prices if their cost of operations has gone up. This blackmailing tactic is now becoming a menace in this country

Government funds are taxpayers' money, All this labour unions forming cartels are the cause of these strike actions that are crippling the economy.

Greedy University lecturers are currently on strike holding everyone to ransom

Land of the Rising Sun
Land of the rising sun, we love and cherish,
Beloved homeland of our brave heroes;
We must defend our lives or we shall perish,
We shall protect our hearths from all our foes;
But if the price is death for all we hold dear,
Then let us die without a shred of fear.

Hail to Biafra, consecrated nation,
Oh fatherland, this be our solemn pledge:
Defending thee shall be a dedication.
Spilling our blood we'll count a privilege;
The waving standard which emboldens the free
Shall always be our flag of liberty.

We shall emerge triumphant from this ordeal,
And through the crucible unnscathed we'll pass;
When we are poised the wounds of battle to heal,
We shall remember those who died in mass;
Then shall our trumpets peal the glorious song
Of victory we scored o'er might and wrong.

Oh God, protect us from the hidden pitfall,
Gu/de all our movements lest we go astray;
Give us the strength to heed the humanist call:
'To give and not to count the cost', each day;
Bless those who rule to serve with resoluteness,
To make this clime a land of righteousness.
