The Nigerian government has levied a fine of $235 Million on two British carriers. The affected carriers are British Airways (BA) and Virgin Atlantic, and are fined $135 Million and $100 Million respectively.

The carriers have been accused of sharp practices by Nigeria’s aerospace regulators.

Harold Demuren the Director General of the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority stated that the airlines were guilty for, “abuse of a dominant position, fixing prices, abusing fuel surcharges and taking advantage of passengers”.

The apex boss of the Aviation Authority further commented that an investigation had been ongoing for several months, and it was found that the Lagos to London route had the highest “yield’ in the world. Many Nigerians have always felt exploited by British Airways and Virgin Atlantic and the DG of the NCAA stated it in clear terms accusing the airlines of “exploitation”.

British Airways has rejected the allegations and it has stated it will vigorously defend its position.

A statement released by the British company said “We pride ourselves on offering competitive fares, a choice of products and connections to our Nigerian customers…We remain committed to Nigeria and have been flying there for more than 75 years.”

This development comes at a time after the Federal Government had already taken orally punitive steps against BA, threatening a reduction in the airline’s weekly allocations to the Lagos airport. The government was acting on the prompting of an indigenous carrier, Arik Airlines. The company launched a formal public complaint to the Nigerian government accusing British Airways of sharp practices.

Last minute negotiations at the highest levels of government led to a temporary resolution and reprieve for BA until the fines were announced today.

According to BusinessNews analysis, at press time a one way ticket from Accra to Ghana booked in advance for November 24th is $ 1,189 for premium economy, $ 2,049 for a business, and $ 2,300 for First Class. A ticket from Lagos to London is $1867 for Premium Economy and $ 3,685 for Business and, $ 5,408 for First Class.

The tickets from Lagos are 57% higher than Accra for Premium economy, 80% higher for Business Class and 135% higher for First Class.

The Federation Accounts Allocation Committee distributed N611.45bn among the three tiers of government. N553.14bn was paid from statutory revenue, while the balance of N58.30bn came from revenue earned from Value Added Tax.

N58.23bn was to be paid to the oil producing states based on the 13 derivation principle.The VAT revenue was shared with the Federal Government amount of N8.74bn; states, N29.15bn and local governments N20.40bn.

Ngama, who presided over the meeting in Abuja, stated that the stalling of the meeting on October 19 was responsible for the delay in the payment of the September salary of public workers. On the N450bn debt allegedly owed the Federation Account by the NNPC, the minister said that the corporation had begun repayment. , the minister said, “The issue of the action on subsidy and recovery of past or outstanding subsidy by NNPC was agreed between me and the management of the NNPC.

If Inter Milan and Russia's Anzhi Makhachkala reach an agreement over his transfer, he will have to decide whether to stay in Milan, compete for the Champions League and the Serie A title and earn a prodigious amount of money, or simply leave and make more in salary than any athlete in the history of mankind—even if it means becoming invisible to most fans.

According to multiple sources, Anzhi has offered the 30-year-old Cameroonian forward a three-year deal worth $25.5 million per year after tax. Income tax brackets vary, but it would cost a club in a big European league—or, for that matter, the United States—between $50 million and $57 million per season to match the Russian club's offer.

That's not far from the combined earnings, excluding endorsements, of Peyton Manning and Alex Rodriguez.

Anzhi can do this for two reasons. One is that the tax rate for foreigners in Russia is a paltry 13%, so Eto'o would actually cost $32 million a season. The other, more important reason, is that Anzhi owner Suleiman Kerimov is a billionaire. He has already spent big on former Brazilian internationals Roberto Carlos, Diego Tardelli and Jucilei, and he's happy to do the same with Eto'o.
