PoliticsPetrol Price Hike And Fuel Scarcity Update For November 19th, 2024 by Supers(op): 9:23am On Nov 19, 2024
As Nigerians endure the effects of the recent fuel price hike by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited, new developments bring some relief. Gistreel reports on the latest trends in petrol scarcity, price reductions, and reactions from the government and citizens.

The Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN) has revealed that the deregulation of Nigeria’s downstream oil sector is driving a gradual drop in petrol prices.

Gistreel understands that increased competition among oil marketers, spurred by deregulation, has started to lower pump prices.

This development coincides with the importation of over 2 billion litres of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) by the NNPC Limited and other operators within just 42 days. IPMAN’s National Publicity Secretary, Chinedu Ukadike, also credited the recent partnership between IPMAN and Dangote Petroleum Refinery as a significant factor in reducing petrol costs.

The Dangote Petroleum Refinery has reached an agreement with IPMAN to supply 60 million litres of petrol weekly, equivalent to 240 million litres monthly. The refinery’s capacity to meet this target depends on IPMAN’s demand and patronage.

The $20 billion Lekki-based refinery is also raising funds to enhance crude oil imports and expand production capacity. According to oil marketers, deregulation has intensified competition, contributing to the recent decline in petrol prices.

SportsLibya Begins Mass Arrest Of Nigerians After CAF Verdict by Supers(op): 1:23pm On Nov 03, 2024
Following the verdict delivered by the Confederation of African Football in response to the complaint lodged by the Nigeria Football Federation over the recent inhumane treatment meted out to the Super Eagles in Libya, members of the Nigerian community have reported mass arrests and fines in the country.

The Nigerian football team was held at the Al-Abraq Airport in eastern Libya for over 20 hours upon arrival for the second leg of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier between the Super Eagles and Libya’s national team.

The contingent was scheduled to land at the Benghazi Airport and travel for nearly four hours by road to Benina, where the match was to be played.

However, less than an hour before landing, the Tunisian pilot reportedly received a directive from Libyan authorities to divert the flight to the Al-Abraq Airport, located 150 miles away from the destination.

The development sparked widespread outrage, forcing the NFF to withdraw the Super Eagles from the qualifying match and file an official complaint to CAF.

In its ruling on Saturday, October 26, signed by its Chairman, Ousmane Kane, the disciplinary committee of the African football body awarded the Super Eagles of Nigeria three points and three goals for the abandoned match.

The disciplinary board ruled that the Libyan Football Federation breached Article 31 of the Africa Cup of Nations Regulations and Articles 82 and 151 of the CAF Disciplinary Code.

The panel also ordered the LFF to pay a fine of $50,000 within 60 days of the notification of the decision.

Displeased with the verdict, the LFF President Nasser Al-Suwai’I described it as “unjust and malicious,” alleging that the NFF’s influence within CAF played a major role in the outcome.

A report on Monday by a Libyan outlet, Libyan Observer, quoted Al-Suwai’I saying the LFF would file an official appeal within hours and that if the appeal was denied, the body would resort to the Court of Arbitration for Sport to ensure “their legitimate rights are secured.”

Campaign against Nigerians

Following the CAF ruling, a popular Libyan news blog, Libya News Today 1, posted on Sunday, stating, “All Libyan TV channels are urging the government to arrest the Nigerian workers who are working here in Libya without legal papers. They have to pay $500 plus taxes.

“The fine that Libya is accused of will be paid by Nigerian citizens who live in Libya. We have been subjected to injustice. We have no borders with Nigeria. What benefit are they to us? They’re a burden on the Libyan people. They have to go back home.”

The blog has more than 188,000 followers on Facebook and 57,000 likes.

The post was accompanied by a video of a Libyan TV presenter, who said, “Anyone who is living in Libya and working without paying tax is eating haram, which means sinful money. The government should make every effort to arrest all Nigerians who are working in Libya so that they can pay a tax of $500 and regulate their stay in the country by obtaining residence permits.”

Another Libyan site, Libya INF.TV, reported that Libyan stations wanted the government to start arresting Nigerian workers.

“Those who don’t have Libyan papers will have to pay a fine of $500 for taxes. If you refuse deportation, no mercy. The Libyan government will pay the Nigerian government from their citizens’ money,” the post said.

Mass arrests

Speaking with Sunday PUNCH, a Nigerian living in Tripoli, the Libyan capital, Adenaike Emmanuel, said the arrests began on Sunday after the CAF statement was released in the country.

“They have already started. The news came out on Saturday, and they were saying they can’t accept it and that they are not the ones who will pay the money. They have started proving this.

“Someone called me and said they had already begun arresting people in his area. The same thing is happening here in Tripoli. In some places, people were arrested on Sunday morning and afternoon. As I mentioned before, Libyans don’t hide their feelings. They believe that by doing this, they are getting their revenge,” Adenaike stated.

The President of the Nigerian community in Libya, Peter Omoregbie, also confirmed the arrests in a video shared by multiple Libya-based Nigerian blogs during the week.

Omoregbie, who confirmed this while making an official report at the Libyan immigration office on Monday, said, “The arrests started on Sunday night in some areas in Tedora. They are arresting innocent people. They don’t even care whether you have passports or residence permits. They just don’t care, which doesn’t happen in other countries.”

When asked to provide background to the incident, he said, “The football body is an association on its own, which the government isn’t supposed to interfere with according to CAF laws. There was a football match scheduled between Nigeria and Libya on October 15. Nigeria was supposed to arrive in Benghazi, but they were diverted to another state, so the match could not take place. The Nigerian football team then returned home. Since then, CAF has investigated the issue and set up a committee to find out what really happened.

“Yesterday, the verdict was issued that Libya has to pay a fine of $50,000 to CAF due to the way they treated the Nigerian football team. Now, on social media, Libyan journalists and numerous bloggers are saying that Nigeria will be made to pay the $50,000 fine by arresting all Nigerians in Libya. But in other countries, nothing like that happens.

RomanceWoman Claims Girls Aged 19-24 Have Nothing To Offer In Relationships Than Beauty by Supers(op): 4:06pm On Oct 30, 2024
Nigerian woman has claimed that girls aged 19 to 24 have little to offer in a relationship beyond their physical appearance.

This assertion was made during an exclusive interview with an influencer.

Woman claims girls aged 19-24 have nothing to offer in relationships.

When asked what type of girls men should avoid in their pursuit of a relationship, she stated that those in the 19 to 24 age bracket primarily offer their bodies.

She argued that these young women tend to prioritize their looks and beauty, which she believes is insufficient for a successful relationship.

In her own words, she explained, “These girls in this age bracket don’t really have much to offer in a relationship. It’s unfair when a girl claims, ‘I am beautiful; I have curves.’ It’s not enough to sustain a relationship. For a relationship to thrive, it should be 50/50. You bring something, and I bring something—that’s how it should work.”

The interviewer sought clarification, asking, “So you mean girls from 18 to 23 are just for pleasure?” In response, she reiterated her stance, suggesting that these young women are unlikely to remain committed. “They won’t stay for you; they won’t,” she asserted.

She also reflected on her own experiences growing up, discussing the dynamics she observed between young women and men.

Additionally, she made pointed remarks about the transactional nature of relationships that often exist between women of this age and their male partners.

CelebritiesMohbad’s Widow Agrees To DNA Test To Determine Son’s Paternity by Supers(op): 8:09am On Oct 28, 2024
Popular Omowunmi, widow of the late singer and rapper, Ilerioluwa Aloba aka Mohbad, has expressed readiness to conduct a Deoxyribonucleic Acid (DNA) test to determine the paternity of their only son, Liam.

PUNCH Metro reported that the deceased singer’s father, Joseph Aloba, filed a suit seeking a DNA test for his grandson.

In the application filed by the legal team to Joseph, the family sought an order to serve Wunmi by posting all the originating processes and other processes in the suit on the last-known address of the respondent.

The family’s legal team led by Emmanuel Oroko, however, argued that attempts to serve Wunmi failed.

The Magistrates Court, during its sitting on July 9, 2024, in the Ikorodu area of Lagos State, directed both parties to explore an alternative dispute resolution, leading to closed-door negotiations that also failed to yield an agreement.

In a statement obtained by PUNCH Metro on Sunday, a representative of the family’s legal team, Monisola Odumosu, stated that Wunmi had agreed to carry out the DNA.

Odumosu added that this was followed by the settlement terms drafted by both parties.

CelebritiesMohbad: Court Orders Substituted Service On Naira Marley, Sam Larry by Supers(op): 6:34am On Aug 23, 2024
A Coroner’s Court in the Ikorodu area of Lagos State has ordered substituted service on key witnesses in the ongoing inquest into the death of singer Ilerioluwa Aloba, aka Mohbad

These include Azeez Fashola aka Naira Marley; Samson Eletu aka Sam Larry; Mohbad’s sister-in-law, Karimot Ogunbayo; Boluwatife Adeyemo aka Darosha and Mohbad’s lawyer, Oluwasanmi Falade.

The nurse who was said to have treated the deceased during the period, Feyisayo Ogedengbe, and the driver who drove him to the hospital, Fidelis Esanbor, were also on the list.

Magistrate T. A. Sotobi granted the application by Mohbad’s father, Joseph Aloba, to serve a witness summons on additional witnesses through a reputable national newspaper and social media.

The Aloba family’s legal team in a statement signed by Monisola Odumosu and sent to PUNCH Metro on Thursday said the order was granted during the court’s sitting on August 16.

The legal team said it also sought an order of the coroner’s court to issue Witness Summons on interested persons as witnesses to give evidence on the connection and circumstances leading to the death of Mohbad.

“Magistrate Sotobi, sitting at the Ikorodu Magistrate court Friday 16 August 2024 agreed with the legal team of Mohbad’s father, Joseph Aloba, that the new witnesses should be served via substituted means in a reputable national newspaper and social media to ensure prompt attendance of the new witnesses.

“The application, which was argued by the legal team led by Mr Wahab Shittu SAN (leading Emmanuel Oroko Esq., Miss. Monisola Odumosu, Emmanuel Sadoh, Dr. A.R. Ahmed, Oluyemi Osalusi Esq., Wole Ariyibi and Sadiq Kamo) representing Mr Joseph Aloba, sought an order of the coroner’s court to issue Witness Summons on interested persons as witnesses to give evidence on the connection and circumstances leading to the death of late Ilerioluwa Promise Aloba (Mohbad), who died in suspicious circumstances on September 12, 2023. Mr. Joseph Aloba also asked for an order to issue Witness Summons against Nurse Feyisayo Ogedengbe, Boluwatife Adeyemo (A.K.A Darosha), Karimot Titilayo Ogunbayo, Barr. Oluwasanmi Falade (Mohbad’s lawyer), and Fidelis Esanbor (driver), Azeez Fashola (aka Naira Marley), Balogun Samson Eletu respectively, to give evidence of what they know in connection and circumstances leading to the death of Mr Ilerioluwa Promise Aloba (Mohbad), in suspicious circumstances on the 12th day of September 2023 on a date convenient and to be determined by the coroner,” the statement read.

They further asked the court that upon the grant of the orders, to grant leave to serve the witness summons to be issued on the new witnesses by substituted service by causing the said witness summons to be published in any reputable national newspaper within the country as the only viable means of service of the witness summons.

The legal team stated that efforts to get these witnesses served witness summons through the court have been unsuccessful.

Meanwhile, the coroner’s court also granted the application to recall Mohbad’s wife, Wunmi, and the IPO in charge of the case, ASP Muhammad Yusuf.

A lawyer, Akinpelu Ogunbona, who argued the application on behalf of Ibrahim Owodunni aka Primeboy, stated that there were new issues both Wunmi and the police needed to shed light upon to give a clear picture of what killed the singer.

According to the statement, their request to be called by Akinpelu A. Ogunbona Esq. is to make clear some ambiguous statements regarding the fight the singer’s wife alleged happened in the house.

The coroner accordingly adjourned for the order to be complied with and the witnesses to be brought to court on the next adjourned date.

Mohbad died at the age of 27, on September 12, 2023, with circumstances surrounding his death sparking controversies on social media.

Being a former record label signee of Marlian Music owned by Naira Marley, Mohbad left the label in February 2022. The Lagos State Police Command had on September 18, 2023, inaugurated a 13-man special investigation team to probe the singer’s death.

His death also led to the arrest of Naira Marley and controversial Lagos socialite, Balogun Eletu, also known as Sam Larry, amongst others.

The singer’s body was on September 21, 2023, exhumed for autopsy to unravel the cause of his death.

PoliticsAppeal Court Orders Yahaya Bello To Face Fraud Charges by Supers(op): 3:00pm On Aug 21, 2024
The Court of Appeal sitting in Abuja, has ordered the former Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello, to present himself for trial.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) had in April moved to arraign the former governor for alleged N80 billion fraud at the Federal High Court, Abuja.

He was charged with a 19-count charge of money laundering alongside three other suspects – Ali Bello, Dauda Suleiman, and Abdulsalam Hudu.

Bello had earlier approached the Kogi State High Court to stop his arrest.

The High court gave the order while ruling on an appeal filed by the EFCC against the judgment of Justice Isah Abdullahi Jamil of the lower court which restrained the commission from arresting Bello.

In the ruling by Justice Ken Amadi, the appeal court also restrained the Bello from taking any further actions regarding the charges against him until he has been formally arraigned.

Upon her arrival in Ilorin, Miss Mojisola informed her roommate that she felt uncomfortable in the hotel she was lodged by Adebayo Happiness and noted that there was no party at the said location.

CrimeFraudster Faces 20-year Jail For Stealing $10m US Unemployment Fund by Supers(op): 6:42am On Aug 21, 2024
A Nigerian man from Lagos State, identified as Yomi Olaleye, faces the possibility of a 20-year prison sentence in the United States after being arrested for allegedly stealing $10m from COVID-19 employment relief funds.

PUNCH Metro learnt that the suspect was arrested at the John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York City on August 13, 2024, on charges of conspiring to obtain the funds.

The acting U.S. Attorney Joshua Levy, along with Special Agent in Charge Andrew Murphy of the U.S. Secret Service Boston Field Office, Special Agent in Charge Jonathan Mellone of the Department of Labor’s Office of Inspector General, and Special Agent in Charge Jodi Cohen of the FBI’s Boston Division, disclosed this on Monday via the official website of the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Massachusetts under the Department of Justice.

The arrest is part of the ongoing U.S. efforts to combat and prevent pandemic-related fraud. The Attorney General previously established the COVID-19 Fraud Enforcement Task Force to achieve this objective.

Olaleye and his co-conspirators are alleged to have defrauded three COVID-19 relief programmes, including Unemployment Insurance, Pandemic Unemployment Assistance, and Federal Pandemic Unemployment Compensation, which were managed by the Massachusetts Department of Unemployment Assistance and other state unemployment agencies.

According to court documents, the 40-year-old Nigerian, along with others, allegedly filed for at least $10m in fraudulent pandemic relief programmes across multiple states, including Massachusetts, Hawaii, Indiana, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Montana, Maine, Ohio, and Washington. They were believed to have received over $1.5m in assistance to which they were not entitled.

The statement revealed that the suspect had been charged with one count of wire fraud conspiracy, one count of wire fraud, and one count of aggravated identity theft.

On August 14, 2024, Olaleye reportedly made his first court appearance in the Eastern District of New York.

The statement partly read, “Specifically, Olayeye and his co-conspirators allegedly used personally identifiable information (PII) they purchased over criminal Internet forums to apply for UI, PUA, and FPUC—falsely representing themselves as eligible state residents affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Olayeye and his co-conspirators allegedly used the same fraudulently obtained PII to open U.S. bank and prepaid debit card accounts to receive the assistance payments. It is also alleged that Olayeye and his co-conspirators recruited U.S.-based account holders to receive and transfer the fraud proceeds via cash transfer applications.

“Olayeye and his co-conspirators then allegedly used the fraudulent proceeds to purchase bitcoin via online marketplaces. It is further alleged that Olayeye and his co-conspirators concealed the conspiracy’s connection to Nigeria by leasing Internet Protocol addresses assigned to computers located in the US for use in the fraudulent transactions.”

If convicted, Olaleye faces up to 20 years in a US prison, three years of supervised release, a fine of $250,000, or twice the gross gain or loss, along with forfeiture and restitution.

PoliticsBREAKING: Presidency Finally Unlocks New Presidential Jet by Supers(op): 8:30pm On Aug 19, 2024
The Presidency, on Monday, unveiled the new Airbus A330 purchased for President Bola Tinubu.

The Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, released the pictures of the presidential jet via his verified X handle on Monday.

The presidential aide stated that the new jet replaces the 19-year-old Boeing B737-700(BBJ) bought during the administration of former President Olusegun Obasanjo.

Onanuga, however, did not reveal the amount spent by the Nigerian government to acquire the new presidential jet.

According to Onanuga, the new jet saved Nigeria huge maintenance and fuel costs, running into millions of dollars yearly.

He wrote, “President Tinubu departed Abuja Monday for Paris, France, using the new Airbus A330, which replaced the 19-year-old Boeing B737-700(BBJ) bought under the Presidency of President Olusegun Obasanjo.

“The new plane bought far below the market price saves Nigeria huge maintenance and fuel costs, running into millions of dollars yearly.

“The recommendation to replace the B737-700(BBJ) followed an investigative hearing by Nigeria’s parliament that questioned the plane’s safety record and cost efficiency, especially after it malfunctioned during a trip to Saudi Arabia.

The Nigerian Senate’s security and intelligence committee recommended replacing the ageing aircraft in the presidential fleet to reduce downtime and operational expenses.

“The new plane is spacious and is furnished with state-of-the-art avionics, customized interior and communications system.”

Meanwhile, Tinubu has departed the Federal Capital Territory for France.

The Airbus A330 business jet conveying the President and some of his key aides lifted off from the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, at 04:08 pm.

Tinubu’s spokesperson, Ajuri Ngelale, announced on Sunday that the President will embark on his fourth trip to the European country on Monday, August 19, departing from Abuja, the nation’s capital.

Politics#endbadgovernance Organisers Plan ‘fearless In October’ Protests by Supers(op): 4:10pm On Aug 19, 2024
Organisers of the just concluded #EndBadGovernanceinNigeria protest held nationwide from August 1 to 10, 2024, are planning to stage another protest in October.

The Director of Mobilisation of the Take It Back Movement, Damilare Adenola, confirmed the planned protests to our correspondent on Monday.

Adenola said the protesters’ demands would remain the same unless there were other issues, requiring them to add more.

“Yes. It is called the ‘Fearless in October Protest’. Our charter of demands stands as same. If at all, we will add more as the country decays more,” he said.

Recall that youths across the country had staged the #EndBadGovernance protests nationwide, including the Federal Capital Territory, despite efforts by government officials, urging youths to shun the protests.

The protesters, days before the demonstrations, had submitted a list of demands, asking the government to among others, scrap the Senate arm of the National Assembly and make law-making a part-time job for the House of Representatives, pay Nigerian workers a minimum of N250,000, reverse fuel prices and the cost of electricity tariffs to pre-January 2023, and to release and compensate all EndSARS and political detainees.

Asked whether the protesters would heed court orders from state governments requiring them to hold demonstrations at designated points, Adenola responded, “We won’t accept the compliance”.

Also, an activist and Human Rights Lawyer, Deji Adeyanju told our correspondent that efforts were currently being directed towards ensuring the release of protesters who had been arrested during the previous protests.

“All efforts are being directed towards securing the release of those that have been arrested”, he told our correspondent via phone call.

Jude added that the bad blood between the twins began in 2013 and led to the group’s official split in 2016.

He said:

“I went to the EFCC office with just Paul. I didn’t go with my lawyer. I gave them all the documents, an officer looked at it and asked if Peter signed. I pointed at his signature for him. I showed him the CAC certificates used in opening both Square Records and Northside Entertainment.

“They were like, you’re even more than P-Square. I said I don’t understand what you mean. They said, look, you’re entitled to 40 per cent shares while the duo are entitled to 30 per cent each. I said, well, I’m not supposed to say it with my mouth, you can see for yourself.

“EFCC officers started asking me some irritable questions like where I got the money to build my house in Ikoyi,” Jude recalled. noting that the building was partly financed by selling his house in America and borrowing money from colleagues.

“I have not been with P-Square for the past eight years, since 2016,” Jude stated, revealing that the rift between the twins began in 2013 and continued until the group officially split in 2016″.

The General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Pastor Enoch Adeboye recounts how an anointed handkerchief from his church brought a woman, who passed away 11 days prior, back to life.

During a sermon in his church, Pastor Adeboye spoke about a man, who was working in Lagos, heard that his sister in the Eastern part of Nigeria had died.

Pastor Enoch Adeboye.

He pleaded with them not to bury yet until he is able to take permission from work and avail himself for the burial.

Before he could finalize his permission from work and travel for the burial, it was already eleven days.

The man, however, had a handkerchief which he had anointed with him.

He laid the handkerchief on her and commanded that she raises from the dead and she ultimately returned back to life.

Politics#endbadgovernance: No Bail, No Lawyers As Courts Send 1,423 Protesters To Prison by Supers(op): 6:35am On Aug 18, 2024
The 10-day #EndBadGovernance protests may have ended, but the fallout will continue to be with us for some time to come.

For instance, several protesters arrested in some states, mainly in the North, have been charged to court and remanded in prison pending their trial which may not commence anytime soon, going by the delay in trial which has characterized our courts.

Consequently, they are now ‘prisoners-awaiting-trial’.

The arraignment is in line with the law which provides that a suspect must be arraigned in court within 48 hours of arrest, but there is no evidence to suggest that the #EndBadGovernance protesters had legal presentation during the arraignment as it ordinarily should be.

It was not clear also whether their pleas were taken, and, worse still, there was no bail for them.

For instance, the police confirmed that none of the 600 of the 832 protesters arrested in Kano State and charged to court had the opportunity for bail as they were all sent to prison pending the next hearing of their case.

The situation is nearly the same in Plateau State where 51 suspects were arrested and charged to court without legal representation and bail.

The police, however, confirmed that a lawyer called in respect of one of the suspects but did not elaborate.

The next adjourned dates for the cases of the protesters could not be confirmed but if the case of those charged in Plateau is used as a yardstick, then they may have to remain in prison custody for at least the next one month.

The Plateau protesters’ case was adjourned to September 18 and 19, that is, about one month away.
The situation in Katsina State is different where out of the 120 protesters arrested and charged to court, 64 were represented by lawyers and bail successfully secured for 30.

The remaining 90 protesters were remanded in prison but the lawyers who represented the 64 were upbeat about freedom for the rest of their clients (34) as soon as possible.

Many of the 110 protesters arrested on the first and second days of the protests in Sokoto metropolis are, according to sources, still languishing in correctional homes.

The suspects were summarily remanded in prison custody after being presented by the police before a mobile court set up the state government.

Suspects arrested later, and who were supposed to be presented to court on Thursday, were not in seen in any of the magistrate courts in the state capital.

11 states

Sunday Vanguard’s survey across 11 states showed that 1, 423 suspected protesters were arrested by the police and charged to court.

Those accused of flying Russia’s flag among them, it was learnt, have been flown to Abuja for further interrogation.

Kano tops the list with 832 suspects, followed by Sokoto, 110, Borno, 97, Katsina, 90, Bauchi, 60, Plateau and Yobe, 51 each, Kaduna, 50, Nasarawa, 40, Niger, 23, and Zamfara, 19.

The charges vary from state to state and they include criminal conspiracy, inciting disturbance, riot, theft, mischief and arson.

Meanwhile, the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), which had vowed ahead of the protests to provide legal aid to arrested protesters whose rights may have been violated, did not show up in any of the courts in all the states where arraignment took place.

Mr Chinonye Obiagwu, SAN, Chairman, NBA Human Rights Institute and Member, NBA Free Legal Support Team for #EndBadGovernance protesters, however, said the association was intervening on behalf of some protesters in Abuja who were harassed and brutalized at the MKO Abiola Stadium, the venue designated for the protests, by security forces, saying a suit was being filed in court on their behalf.

“The branches of the NBA were mandated to provide legal assistance to anyone arrested or whose human rights were violations during the protest”, Obiagwu told Sunday Vanguard late last week.

“There were a number of reports from the branches about support provided to diverse range of people. Most of the cases are still going on and so the data have not been collated at the central NBA level.

“In Abuja, some protesters, including women, were molested at the stadium when they came to arrange for the August 10 protests.

“This was the stadium the court designated as the approved place for the protests, yet they were beaten and harassed by law enforcement agents in the same venue.

“So, the NBA Human Rights Institute intervened and some of the molested protesters are filing a suit to challenge the denial of their right to peaceful protests.”

The protests took place nationwide from August 1 to August 10.

Tagged #EndBadGovernance protests, it was organized by youth groups to call government’s attention to the downturn in the economy and the hunger in the land.

Efforts by government to dissuade organizers from proceeding with the action on the grounds that it may be hijacked by hoodlums to cause destruction proved abortive.

The protests were largely peaceful in Abuja and Lagos, among others, where government obtained court orders to restrict demonstrations to designated venues.

But in many states, especially in the northern part of the country, the protests took a violent turn as hoodlums came in, leading to loss of lives and destruction of property.

The police called many of the arrested persons ‘rioters’ but some of them disputed the claim, saying they were protesters

Additionally, the protests turned to pro-Russia rallies in Kano, Kaduna and Katsina states, among others, as demonstrators carried Russian flags in a manner suggesting they want Nigeria to turn to Russia in search of solution to her challenges.

Kano

Kano State Police Command said it arrested no fewer than 832 suspects for various offences during the nationwide protests in the state.

The state Commissioner of Police, CP, Salman Garba, said 600 were rioters while 76 were arrested in connection with the displaying of Russia flags.

Garba said others arrested include six who allegedly masterminded the looting of the Kano Printing Press and 150 violators of curfew imposed by the state government as a result of the protests.

“The Kano State Police Command has worked diligently and professionally towards addressing the aftermath of the August 1st to 10th nationwide protests, and these efforts resulted in the arrest of 873 suspects and recovery of large quantity of exhibits”, he said.

“Arrest and prosecution of six hundred (600) suspects for various offences, including criminal conspiracy, inciting disturbance, riot, theft, mischief and arson were made.

“Similarly, arrest and prosecution of one hundred and fifty (150) suspects for violating the curfew enforced by the Kano State government while additional (6) suspects arrested were linked with masterminding the destruction, setting ablaze and looting of the Kano Printing Press (KPP) are undergoing investigation.

“We also arrested and transferred seventy-six (76) suspects flying Russian flags, including a foreigner to Force Headquarters, Abuja for discreet investigation on charges of sedition”.

When contacted for additional information on the number of suspects granted bail after arraignment in court, spokesperson for the state Police Command, SP Abdullahi Haruna, said no one was granted bail.

Kaduna

In Kaduna State, suspects arrested in connection with the protests, it was learnt, were also charged to court.

Although a source close to the police in the state said the police arrested over 50 youths, the state Police Command Public Relations Officer (PPRO), ASP Mansir Hassan, could not disclose the actual number of those arrested.

“All the suspects have been changed to court and some were transferred to Abuja for investigation”, Hassan simply told Sunday Vanguard.

Meanwhile, there were complaints that some of those arrested were peaceful protesters and had not participated in looting or vandalizing of government and private properties.
