The Osun State Government has launched Imole Wi-Fi, a free public internet service aimed at expanding digital access for residents, students, businesses, and communities across the state. The initiative, announced on Monday by the State Commissioner for Information and Enlightenment, Kolapo Alimi, is designed to increase opportunities across education, health, agriculture, commerce, and other sectors. Initially, Imole Wi-Fi will be available at key government buildings and public spaces, including the Osun State Library, Alphastart Hub, Osun Mall, Salvation Army Middle School, Osogbo Grammar School, and sites within the Ministry of Innovation, Science, Technology and Digital Economy. Governor Ademola Adeleke described the service as “a gateway to opportunity,” adding that it will help cut barriers, connect people, and stimulate growth across the state’s economy. The Special Adviser overseeing the project, Azeez Badmus, said the launch is the first phase of the initiative. He added that as the program expands, more government services and sector-specific digital tools will be made available, ensuring all residents benefit from Osun’s digital future. Imole Wi-Fi is expected to be rolled out to additional locations over time, positioning Osun State as a pioneer in digital inclusion in Nigeria. https://supers.ng/osun-state-rolls-out-free-public-wi-fi-to-boost-connectivity-for-residents-and-students/

minimum of N2.5m per month, insisting that anything less was no longer tenable. On Tuesday, protests rocked several campuses as members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities decried the Federal Government’s failure to implement the renegotiated 2009 FGN–ASUU agreement. Lecturers have long decried poor remuneration and declining conditions in the academic environment. With professors earning about N500,000 monthly, some have been forced to squat in quarters, while others compete with students for space in buses meant for undergraduates. Documents obtained by Saturday PUNCH show that under the Consolidated University Academic Salary Structure, Graduate Assistants earn between N125,000 and N138,020 monthly, while professors earn between N525,010 and N633,333. Assistant Lecturers earn N150,000–N171,487; Lecturer II, N186,543–N209,693; Lecturer I, N239,292–N281,956; Senior Lecturer, N386,101–N480,780; and Readers, N436,392–N522,212. In separate interviews with Saturday PUNCH, the professors insisted that their salaries should not fall below N2.5m. A professor at the University of Ibadan, Remi Aiyede, said Nigerian professors were grossly underpaid compared to colleagues in other African countries. He added that a government-commissioned report had already recommended similar figures. He said, “If you want to benchmark it across countries, you will see that the monthly pay of an average professor across Africa is between $2,000 and $4,000. “So, if you break that down to naira, then you will have an idea of what we are talking about. In fact, a million naira is conservative. Professors in Nigeria should not earn less than N2.5m monthly. “After the Nimi-Briggs Commission, there was a committee set up by this government, which looked into the matter. The report was submitted to the President, and if I understand what was written in that document, a professor should be earning about N2.5m.” At the University of Lagos, Prof. Abigail Ndizika-Ogwezzy of the Department of Mass Communication stressed that professors needed decent pay to deliver effectively. She lamented that poor conditions was forcing lecturers to overwork themselves. “Anything less than N2.5m for a professor at the bar is not it; look at the reality. If I want to get a house to live in this Akoka area, it’s not less than N3m per year. Then won’t I feed, pay my children’s fees, ride a good car and even take care of my health? Then when is my reward? “We are carrying the burden of three, four, five people. It is impacting our health, our eyes. We have to read scripts, prepare notes, do community service, conduct research, publish, and attend conferences. Meanwhile, we are all buying from the same market as private sector workers, yet many lecturers cannot pay their children’s school fees,” she added. Prof. Sheriffdeen Tela of Babcock University, Ogun State, also backed the N2.5m demand, saying the disparity between professors and political office holders was indefensible. https://supers.ng/varsity-profs-demand-n2-5m-salary/

The Federal Government (FG) has now officially set 12 years as the minimum age for admission into Junior Secondary School 1 (JSS1) across Nigeria. This new directive, issued by the Federal Ministry of Education, was detailed in a recently launched policy document focused on Non-State Schools. According to the policy, students must complete six full years of primary education before transitioning to JSS1, aligning with the government’s structured nine-year basic education model. This model includes six years of primary education and three years of junior secondary school. The guideline outlines a clear progression: children are to start Nursery One at age three, Nursery Two at four, and Kindergarten at five. Primary education begins at age six, with students expected to enter JSS1 around age twelve. The policy document states: “Nursery education shall be of three years’ duration. Children shall be admitted into Nursery One when they attain the age of three years, Nursery Two on attaining the age of four, and one year of compulsory pre-primary education (Kindergarten) on attaining the age of five years, in accordance with the specification of Section 2(17) of the NPE, 2013 Edition.” It further explains: “Basic education shall be of nine years’ duration. There shall be a six-year primary and a three-year Junior Secondary School (JSS). Children shall be admitted into Primary One when they attain the age of six years. Every child must complete six years of primary education. They shall be admitted into Junior Secondary School (JSS1) when they have completed six (6) years of primary education, at around the age of twelve (12) years.” The new age requirement is reportedly aimed at ensuring age-appropriate learning progression and to standardize educational entry points nationwide. The document also shed light on the expanding role of private education in Nigeria. Non-state schools—often referred to as private, independent, or non-government schools—now outnumber state-owned schools in junior secondary levels across at least 26 states of the country. “Non-state schools outnumber state schools in at least 26 states of the federation at the Junior Secondary level, whereas at the primary level, state schools outnumber non-state schools in 19 states of the federation. Data from the Nigeria Education Digest 2022 reveals that non-state junior secondary schools grew by 35.06% between 2017 and 2022, compared to a 6.8% growth rate in state-owned schools during the same period. Similarly, private primary schools grew by over 31%, while public primary schools saw just a 3.3% increase. “The growth in the number of non-state schools between 2017 and 2022 (the last five years reported) has been faster than that of state schools. Non-state primary schools grew in number by 31.56 per cent between 2017 and 2022, while state schools grew in number by 3.3 per cent within the same period. At the Junior Secondary level, non-state schools grew in number by 35.06 per cent between 2017 and 2022, while state schools grew in number by 6.8 per cent only within the same period.” The age requirement adjustment also supports the earlier policy stance of 18 years as the ideal university entry age, although current Education Minister Dr. Tunji Alausa recently revised the university admission age back to 16 years. https://supers.ng/fg-you-must-now-be-12-to-start-jss1/

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Ezenwo Nyesom Wike, has thrown jabs at former presidential candidate Peter Obi, insisting that he can no longer become Nigeria‘s president. Wike made this known in a statement shared on Sunday, as seen in a post by a user, @ChuksEricE, on the social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter. He was addressing the opposition’s move to form a coalition aimed at taking over power from the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 general election. While reacting to the proposed coalition, Wike first blasted former Minister of Interior, Rauf Aregbesola, stating that he had no moral ground to criticize the state of the country. According to him, Aregbesola failed to fix key sectors while in office. “These are the same people that want to rescue Nigeria. You were the minister of interior but under you, the international passport—people would spend weeks, months, even years before they could get one,” he said. Shifting his focus to Peter Obi, Wike dismissed his chances of ever becoming president, citing his record as a former governor. “For eight years, he was governor, and he didn’t conduct a single local government election. Never. Only you, governor of all the local governments,” Wike said. He further criticized Obi’s constant movement across political parties, saying: “In 1999, you were in the party. In 2006, you were in another party. In 2014, you moved to another party. In 2019, you came back to another one. In 2025, you’re moving again—to rescue who?” “Let’s tell ourselves the truth. Some of you are fighting for somebody you don’t even know,” he added. The video, which has since gone viral, sparked a wave of reactions online as Nigerians flooded the comment section to share their views. See some reactions below: @de_godfella: “Nah,for church ? They know it will be game over once he gets the ticket.” @chisomincrease: “Pastors letting men like this to mount their pulpit and spill gibberish are a shame to priesthood. Lawyer, financial consultant, and spiritual thinker, Owolabi Salis has made history as the first Nigerian to travel to space, joining Blue Origin’s NS-33 mission. In an interview, Salis opened up about the motivation behind his space trip, the cost, and the revelations he encountered during the voyage. Salis explained that his journey was more spiritual than scientific. He described Earth as “Planet 3,” suspended by the sun’s beam and revolving at high speed—something he finds deeply mysterious. His goal was to explore deeper questions about the soul, its origin, and its purpose. He said he wrote to Blue Origin, expressing his interest in conducting research on spiritualism. After paying a significant, undisclosed amount—estimated to be around $2 million—he underwent intensive training and secured the necessary approvals from the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration. Although the initial flight on June 21 was delayed due to high winds, the trip eventually took place on June 29. Despite the risks involved, Salis said he felt no fear, thanks to his deep spiritual grounding. During the flight, he experienced weightlessness for about three minutes. He described floating like a bird and being awed by the sight of Earth suspended in darkness. He said the view confirmed his belief in a divine presence beyond religious texts. “From what I saw, the Almighty Lord of the Universe is not the same as what some religious books are telling us,” he said. Salis revealed that he has visited over 120 countries, the North and South Poles, and other extreme locations, which he considers spiritual pilgrimages. His next goal is to explore isolated islands by boat, drawn by their volcanic origins and natural beauty. Although he is retired, Salis said he finances his trips through savings and past work as a prominent lawyer and civil rights advocate in New York. He has also contested multiple times to become the governor of Lagos State but expressed no regret over the failed attempts. He called for reforms in Nigeria’s political system, advocating for a shift from what he calls “assisted personality politics” to a more inclusive model he terms “equitocracy.” He also urged the Nigerian government to implement local policing to improve grassroots governance and public safety. Salis believes that space travel will become more accessible in the future and is already recommending more Nigerians for similar opportunities with Blue Origin. WBC title holder and 2022 Commonwealth medallist Elizabeth Oshoba talks about winning a world title, beating the odds to win a medal in Birmingham, her boxing journey and more in this interview with PETER AKINBO How did you start boxing? It was actually my brother who introduced me to it; he came to me when I was 12 and said he wanted me to start boxing, he said, ‘I saw one video of a girl boxing and she is just like you, you guys look alike so I would like you to try boxing too’ but I told him I don’t want to box. So, actually, I do sports, I like sports, then I played football, I played table tennis then too, all these street sports, but I said I couldn’t do boxing, I didn’t want them to spoil my fine face, I can’t do it. My parents like sports as well, so they encouraged me, and one particular day, my Dad lied to me that we should go out to get fuel and he drove me to coach Smart of Smart Boxing, and when we got there was when I realised it was a boxing gym. The coach was now encouraging me too, and I saw a lot of ladies like me boxing so I now decided I could do this if these ones were doing it because I had the mind that if they saw me outside, they could just beat me and go, and I can’t let that happen and that is when I started. When you first started boxing, did guys in the neighbourhood try to fight you? Actually, when I started boxing, I was going to a public school so some of my schoolmates stayed in the area of the boxing gym, and when they saw me there, the next day they came to school and told everyone I was fighting boxing, and the guys then in the school did not want to accept that a lady could be doing this so they started bullying me, and it got to the point that I had to fight back, although it is not professional and we shouldn’t fight back, I had to just fight back but then I fought with a guy in my class and he started bleeding and that was when they all knew that I was a good boxer and they started leaving me alone. https://supers.ng/oshoba-i-was-bullied-by-boys-for-learning-boxing-in-school/

Lecturer at Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK) has gone viral for adopting a creative “photo attendance” system to tackle chronic absenteeism and signature forgery among students. In a video shared by the lecturer, Dr. Taiwo Oluwaseyi, identified as @taiwo_2222 on TikTok, he explained that students are now required to appear in a group photo taken at the end of each lecture, effectively serving as proof of attendance. The video showcased a dramatic view of the class, with students lining up after the lecture to be captured in the attendance photo. According to the lecturer, the new system has significantly improved student turnout, as many are now making more effort to attend classes regularly. “No more signature attendance. Signature forging is real. It’s either you show in the class picture or not,” the lecturer declared in his caption. He further emphasised that under his new system, any student not visible in the group photo would be marked absent, regardless of whether their name appeared in any signed register. “If you’re not in the photo, you weren’t in class. That’s the rule,” he wrote. https://supers.ng/unizik-lecturer-adopts-photo-attendance-to-curb-signature-forgery/

Located along the ever-busy Lagos-Badagry Expressway, Isasi cemetery is a place where the dead find little peace. Overcrowded and neglected, this burial ground tells a haunting tale, as bodies are laid to rest in shallow, one-foot-deep graves, many without markers or dignity, their brittle bones protruding from the earth. CHIJIOKE IREMEKA exposes the grim realities of this final resting place, raising alarming questions about public health and respect for the departed Hammed Adeyemo stood quietly at the edge of the waterlogged grave, her eyes brimming with tears as she watched the body of her aunt, Mutiat, being lowered into a muddy trench barely a foot deep at the Iyana-Isasi Cemetery in Lagos. At the cemetery located off the Lagos-Badagry Expressway, near the Iyana-Isasi bus stop, the 31-year-old fashion designer grieved not just the loss of her beloved aunt, but also the indignity of her burial. The grave was so shallow it barely held Mutiat’s body, and the sorrow that gripped Adeyemo deepened with every passing moment. Her heartbreak only worsened when she discovered that the cemetery forbade gravestones or markers to identify burial spots. It meant she might never find the exact resting place of the woman who had been like a second mother to her. “It felt like the cemetery was trying to erase the good memories I shared with my aunt, who slipped and died in the bathroom,” she said, her eyes swollen from excessive crying. In a trembling voice, Adeyemo shared with Sunday PUNCH the painful story of how her aunt, who left behind three children, died unexpectedly. A tragic morning Mutiat, a quiet and well-loved woman in her late 50s, had gone to bathe that Saturday morning, unaware it would be her last. According to Adeyemo, while in the bathroom, she slipped and fell. For several long minutes, no one realised she was lying helpless on the wet, cold floor. Her 11-year-old son, who had been playing outside their home at 55 Baruwa Street, Old Ojo Road, in the Amuwo Odofin Local Government Area, eventually came inside to drink water. Not seeing his mother, he began calling out. “Her son called out for his mum several times but got no response. Hearing the sound of running water, he moved towards the bathroom, calling her name. Then he found her, lying unconscious on the floor,” Adeyemo recounted. In panic, the boy dashed out to raise the alarm. Neighbours rushed in and quickly carried Mutiat to a health centre on the street. As a nurse struggled to revive her, a call came in from Mutiat’s only surviving sister, who had travelled abroad to visit her children. Upon learning what had happened, she immediately instructed that Mutiat be transferred to a better-equipped hospital, hoping that faster care might change the outcome. But the worst had already happened. At the hospital, doctors pronounced her dead and wrote in the report that she was “brought in dead.” Unsettling burial “As Muslims, we knew her body had to be buried as soon as possible,” Adeyemo said. “Without a husband or father to decide, we contacted her sister in the United States, who gave the go-ahead for the burial.” An ambulance was arranged to take the body to Iyana-Isasi Cemetery. But what they encountered there was shocking. “The gravediggers dug a shallow grave, barely a foot deep,” she recalled, still evidently shocked. “That was where she was buried.” Family and friends stood stunned as Mutiat’s body was lowered into the shallow grave. The indignity didn’t end there. One of the gravediggers had to use his shovel to press her arm into the earth because part of it still stuck out. “It was traumatic,” Adeyemo said. “Even in death, she wasn’t given the dignity she deserved.” Fears of animals desecrating body Adeyemo feared that animals, such as dogs or pigs, might dig up the shallow grave and feast on her aunt’s remains, which had been wrapped in a simple white cloth typically used for Muslim burials. “I have heard stories about people being buried like this, but I didn’t believe until I saw it with my own eyes,” Adeyemo said, her voice quivering. “It felt like my aunt was discarded, not buried. That grave wasn’t fit for a human being.” The burial, she recounted, was hastily done. Within minutes, the workers had covered the body with sand, patting it down with their shovels. No prayers were at the site, no comforting words, no tribute. Just the sound of earth and shovels. More painful was the refusal by cemetery staff to allow a gravestone or marker. She said, “I begged them to let us place a headstone, just something small to mark her resting place, but they refused. I looked around and saw no names, no stones, nothing; just bare, unmarked earth stretching in rows of invisible graves. “I feel like in a few weeks, no one will know where she lies. She raised me. She deserved better,” she said, choking on tears. “I understand that land is scarce, but the dead should not be treated this way. It looks more like a mass burial ground than a proper cemetery. That makes it even worse. “I keep wondering how I’ll visit her. I can’t lay flowers. I can’t find her grave. It’s like she disappeared. And with such a shallow grave, I can’t even say for sure what happened to her body after we left. No one should be forgotten this easily.” Trauma of burial A few days after Adeyemo’s heartbreak, the family of Raji Mohammed was made to walk the same agonising path as they laid their son, Rafiu, who died in a road crash, to rest. Their grief was deepened by the nature of his burial, which they described as disrespectful and careless. Their first choice had been Iyana-Era Cemetery. But with the facility locked by the government under unclear circumstances, they had no option but to bring Rafiu’s body to Iyana-Isasi Cemetery. “We paid the gravediggers N10,000,” Rafiu’s elder brother, Ismaila, told Sunday PUNCH. “But when we arrived, what we saw was a shallow grave, not suitable for burying a human being. It was wrong. It felt like desecration.” The burial, she recounted, was hastily done. No one should be forgotten this easily.” https://supers.ng/lagos-cemetery-where-bodies-are-buried-in-one-foot-graves/

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board will on Thursday review the results of the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination following what it described as “unusual” public complaints. A notice seen by The PUNCH in Abuja confirmed that the review meeting would bring together vice-chancellors, provosts, rectors, school principals, examiners, and technical experts to scrutinise the examination process and address the widespread dissatisfaction expressed by candidates and stakeholders. This development comes in the wake of mounting protests from candidates and parents over the results released last Friday, with many alleging technical glitches and inconsistencies during the exam. According to the official notice, the review panel, which includes members from the All Nigeria Confederation of Principals of Secondary Schools, the National Association of Proprietors of Private Schools, Computer Professionals Registration Council of Nigeria, the Educational Assessment and Research Network, and top officials from Nigeria’s tertiary institutions, will evaluate the conduct and outcome of the 2025 UTME. “In furtherance of the commitment of the board to earn public confidence in its processes, the management of the board has approved your participation to be part of the review panel constituted to appraise the conduct of the examination with the mandate to identify challenges, if any, and proffer relevant recommendations to prevent a recurrence,” the notice reads in part. It added that the panel’s assignment will be at no cost to the board. The UTME is a critical prerequisite for admission into tertiary institutions in Nigeria. It tests candidates in four subjects, including the compulsory Use of English, with the other three drawn from their proposed field of study. Of the 1.9 million candidates who sat the UTME, over 1.5 million reportedly scored below 200 out of the maximum 400 marks, raising concerns across the education sector. According to the examination agency, a total of 1,955,069 results were processed, out of which only 4,756 candidates (0.24 per cent) scored 320 and above, considered top-tier performance, while 7,658 candidates (0.39 per cent) scored between 300 and 319, bringing the total for those who scored 300 and above to 12,414 candidates (0.63 per cent). Also, 73,441 candidates (3.76 per cent) scored between 250 and 299 while 334,560 candidates (17.11 per cent) scored between 200 and 249. Pope Francis has finally been laid to rest inside Santa Maria Maggiore Basilica in Rome on Saturday, following a funeral mass at St Peter’s Square, the Vatican confirmed. The late pontiff, who passed away on Monday at the age of 88, was buried during a 30-minute ceremony that began at 1:00 pm (1100 GMT). Footage shared by the Holy See captured the moment cardinals sealed his wooden and zinc coffin with red wax, while Cardinal Kevin Farrell, the camerlengo overseeing the Vatican’s daily affairs, sprinkled holy water on it before it was lowered into the tomb. True to his humble spirit, Francis had requested a simple and unadorned burial site. His tombstone, bearing only the Latin inscription “Franciscus,” is made from marble sourced from Liguria, the region tied to his Italian ancestry. Francis, born Jorge Bergoglio, had chosen the exact spot for his burial back in 2023, a side nave of the beloved fifth-century basilica where he often prayed before and after his international trips. Devoted to the Virgin Mary, Francis’ connection to Santa Maria Maggiore was deeply personal. The basilica, one of Rome’s four major papal churches, had not received a papal burial since Pope Clement IX in 1669. It already houses the tombs of seven other popes and other notable figures like Gian Lorenzo Bernini, the artist behind St Peter’s Square’s iconic design. Hundreds of thousands of mourners gathered earlier in St Peter’s Square to bid farewell to the pope, remembered as a leader who ruled “with an open heart.” Santa Maria Maggiore, built around 432 AD under Pope Sixtus III, also holds treasured relics, including an ancient icon of the Virgin Mary and baby Jesus, believed to have been painted by Saint Luke. The Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria has said that petrol is going to sell at N935 per litre beginning from Monday (today) based on the latest arrangement with the Dangote Petroleum Refinery. IPMAN’s National President, Maigandi Garima, said the reduction in Dangote refinery’s ex-depot price for petrol and the uniform arrangement being put in place, would enable marketers to sell at N935 in their outlets nationwide, incurring a cost of N36 on logistics. “Dangote refinery has brought another new arrangement of loading and pricing by which marketers would pay a fixed ex-depot price of N899.50k. “The refinery is running a programme whereby it wants the fuel consumption across the country to be at the same rate. We are expecting the new arrangement to kick-start on Monday. Previously, the loading price was N970 per litre, but from Monday, petrol prices will drop to N935,” Garima stated. The association also stated that over 30,000 of its members are set to commence petrol loading from the Dangote Petroleum Refinery and the Port Harcourt Refining Company following the reduction of the ex-depot price of the product to N899 per litre. This came as it was observed that the pump price of petrol dropped on Sunday to between N950 and N980 per litre in a few filling stations in Lagos including MRS, BOVAS and NNPC. However, the cost was above N1,000 per litre in many other outlets in the state. But IPMAN promised on Sunday that the price would drop further, as it said the cost of petrol would reduce to N935 per litre in more filling stations by Monday (today) in view of Dangote refinery’s new arrangement. Similarly, retail outlet owners under the auspices of the Petroleum Products Retail Outlet Owners Association of Nigeria have begun registration with MRS filling station to lift Dangote petrol at N935 per litre. The IPMAN National Publicity officer, Chinedu Ukadike, and the PETROAN President, Billy Gillis-Harry, disclosed these during separate exclusive interviews with The PUNCH on Sunday. The development came after intense pricing competition in the nation’s downstream sector, which triggered a price war between NNPCL and Dangote due to a reduction in the ex-depot price to N899 per litre. On Saturday, the NNPCL, in a surprising development, slashed petrol prices by 12 per cent, to the delight of Nigerians and marketers. This decision, coming days after the Dangote Refinery reduced its price to N899, was confirmed by the Petroleum Products Retail Outlet Owners Association of Nigeria in a statement on Saturday. Before now, petrol prices had consistently increased, causing customers to worry that the price hike might be sustained during the festive season.
