PoliticsRefineries Privatisation Solution To Current Mess by Supers(op): 4:22am On Jan 27, 2023
Petrol scarcity, high prices of diesel, kerosene, aviation fuel and lubricants, the Federal Government has again missed the argument and crux of the protracted petrol subsidy payments. In a rehashed and worn-out idea akin to scratching the surface of the matter, the Minister of Finance, according to findings by SUPERS.ng is that Budget and National Planning, Zainab Ahmed, hinted on the sidelines of the 2023 World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, that the government was ending the subsidy regime gradually from the second quarter. For long, the issue of subsidy has been clouded by sentiments, half-truths, corruption, and official incompetence.

On the back of hefty but opaque subsidy payments, Nigeria, back as Africa’s No.1 crude oil exporter, has been ensnared in a prolonged petrol scarcity since January 2022. Ahmed said, “We also have to exit fuel subsidy, because that is also a significant contributory factor. You can look at it in two ways – it is revenue that would have come to the government, but it doesn’t because it has been spent on fuel subsidy. But also, where there is nothing for the government to buy the refined petroleum products, we have to borrow to buy the petroleum products. So, if you take that out, that’s about N3.25 trillion; that is a significant relief., SUPERS.ng Learnt.

This is confusing. Despite subsidy payments by the government and the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Limited not remitting oil sales proceeds regularly into the Federation Account, petrol is selling far above the regulated N185 per litre in many parts of the country. In some cases, the product is selling for N300 to N600 per litre.

Still, the Federal Government appears confident that once the subsidy payment, currently worsened by the forex crisis, is discontinued in June, the bottlenecks in the nation’s oil sector would be over. This is a totally defective thinking because the problems facing the country’s oil sector are multilateral.

it was observed by SUPERS.ng that Apart from subsidy payments, there are critical issues in Nigeria’s oil downstream sector. The major ones are government’s refusal to privatise the refineries, the involvement of the regulator (NNPC) in retailing products and shallow domestic refining.

Data by Blackgold Energy Authorities, an oil and gas consulting and advisory firm, states that Nigeria imports petroleum products with $28 billion per annum. This is more than half of the N21.83 trillion 2023 budget. “Nigeria’s per capita refining is about 0.002 barrels per day, that’s very embarrassing,” Blackgold argued. Plainly, subsidy is not the problem but the woeful domestic refining capacity.

Petroleum products prices will be unsustainably high in Nigeria long as the country imports them. The President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), and his cohorts should realise that the first major step out of the quagmire is to refine domestically.

Nigeria has four refineries; two in Port Harcourt, Rivers State; one in Warri, Delta State and one in Kaduna, with an installed capacity of 445,000 barrels per day. But monstrous inefficiency, corruption and lack of focus have combined to persistently keep their operations far below their installed capacities for decades. It is curious that successive governments have neglected this direction. The refineries keep gulping millions as running costs annually, with taxpayers’ money continually earmarked wastefully for turnaround and rehabilitation works. Over a period of 25 years, the Federal Government wasted a whopping $25 billion on them, a report stated.

In 2021, the Federal Government voted $1.5 billion to repair the Port Harcourt Refinery. This is a refinery that generated a total revenue of N10.33 billion from 2015 to 2019, according to its 2019 audited financial statements. It reported a total loss of N229.14 billion during the period.

Several stakeholders, including Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo, have canvassed the benefits of privatising the refineries. In 2020, Osinbajo said that the government had no business running refineries. He said, “If the refinery is left in the hands of the government, it will continue to experience the same problem it is experiencing now. I do not think that it is the business of the government to run the refinery. It should be the business of the private sector, which is why we are trying to focus on assisting the private sector to develop modular refineries.”

Indeed, Nigeria has issued 65 licences for modular refineries since 2015. Only about four have taken off the ground; these ones complain about lack of access to feedstock (crude oil). This shows the leadership is just paying lip-service to domestic refining.

Political brickbats and labour unions’ strident outcry over the privatisation of the refineries chiefly reflect a nation unprepared for a diversified economy. At the tail end of his administration, ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo sold the controlling stake in two of the refineries to the Bluestar Consortium for $721 million in 2007, but his successor, the late Umaru Yar’Adua, irrationally reversed it.

Former President Goodluck Jonathan failed to achieve their privatisation. His successor, Buhari, has stuck primordially to public ownership of the moribund assets. This sets back the economy in several ways.

One of these is that the Buhari regime has been borrowing to pay for subsidies. That is bad economics. By privatising the refineries, Nigeria can free itself of spending on the refineries and allow the private sector to refine, as is the practice elsewhere. Singapore, a minor crude producer, is a major hub for refined petroleum products with a capacity for 1.5 million bpd, says the International Trade Administration.

The subsidy regime is significantly tainted by corruption, and the government’s unwillingness to eliminate oil theft, which the Senate said cost Nigeria $2 billion in eight months during 2022. This year, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission noted it recovered about N13 billion as proceeds of illegal payments made under the subsidy regime between 2017 and 2021. In 2011, the Jonathan administration could not account for N2.57 trillion subsidy payments.

Therefore, the starting point is to privatise the country’s moribund public refineries to allow strong competition and promote self-sufficiency in petroleum products within a virile commercial framework.

FoodToo Many Nigerians At High Risk Of Hunger — PUNCH by Supers(op): 3:02am On Jan 27, 2023
TORMENTED by years of interminable Islamist terrorism, banditry, Fulani herdsmen rapine, militancy/industrial oil theft, kidnapping, and seasonal flooding, all conflating into economic downturn, Nigeria’s ability to feed its mammoth population of 216 million is becoming highly questionable. Observed by SUPERS.ng, it has been reinforced by a new United Nations publication, which warned that nearly 25 million Nigerians are at risk of facing hunger between June and August if urgent action is not taken. This advisory resonates. The federal and state governments should not trivialise it.

Food has become very expensive, preventing millions of Nigerians from feeding well. SUPERS.ng gathered that With security deteriorating to extraordinary depths, forcing farmers to abandon their farmland, there is a real threat of hunger looming large over Africa’s most populous country.

According to the UN, the new data is a projected increase from the estimated 17 million people currently at risk of food insecurity. The report listed continued conflict, climate change, inflation and rising food prices as major drivers of its forecast. According to SUPERS.ng findings, the National Bureau of Statistics aggregated food inflation in December at 23.75 per cent, a drop from the 24.13 per cent in November. Year-on-year, it was up by 6.38 per cent. Recent reports from local and international organisations point to the fact that millions of Nigerians go to bed hungry without any certainty as to where their next meal would come from as prices of foodstuff skyrocket.

Predictably, Nigeria ranked 103 out of 121 countries in the Global Hunger Index, which was released in October 2022, and jointly published by NGOs Concern Worldwide and Welthungerhilfe of Germany. The report, which ranks countries by “severity” of hunger level, gave Nigeria a score of 27.3 – a hunger level falling under the “serious” category.

The 2022 ranking was the second consecutive year in which Nigeria’s ranking on the scale remained stagnant. It ranked 103 out of 116 countries in 2021 and finished 98 among 107 countries in 2020, SUPERS.ng learnt.

NBS data indicates that food prices continue to rise in Nigeria. For instance, the average price of 1.0 kilogramme of boneless beef on a year-on-year basis, increased by 29.00 per cent from the N1,812.03 recorded in November 2021 to N2,337.46 in November 2022.

Apart from rising food prices, the country has never had it this bad in terms of insecurity after the Civil War of 1967 to 1970.

CareerGoogle Announces 12,000 Layoffs Worldwide by Supers(op): 1:04am On Jan 22, 2023
Google’s parent company Alphabet announced, on Friday, it will cut about 12,000 jobs globally, citing a changing economic reality as it became the latest US tech giant to enact large-scale restructuring.

The layoffs come a day after Microsoft said it would reduce staff numbers by 10,000 in the coming months, following similar cuts by Facebook owner Meta, Amazon and Twitter as the tech sector girds for the economic downturn

The cuts follow a major hiring spree during the height of the coronavirus pandemic when companies scrambled to meet demand as people went online for work, school and entertainment.

“Over the past two years we’ve seen periods of dramatic growth,” Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai said in an email to employees.

“To match and fuel that growth, we hired for a different economic reality than the one we face today.”

A review is taking place to make sure that people and their roles are in line with the company’s priorities, Pichai said, adding that the workforce would be reduced by around 12,000 positions

Alphabet employed nearly 187,000 workers worldwide at the end of September 2022. The cuts represent a little over 6 per cent of its total workforce.

The cuts will be “across departments, functions, levels of responsibility and regions,” Pichai added.

“The fact that these changes will impact the lives of Googlers weighs heavily on me, and I take full responsibility for the decisions that led us here

Pichai said that the cuts would “sharpen our focus” on priorities including artificial intelligence.

“Being constrained in some areas allows us to bet big on others,” he said.

Google’s world-dominating search engine has found itself under pressure with the emergence of ChatGPT, a Microsoft-backed chatbot that can generate elaborate, human-like content in just seconds.

Microsoft has said the technology will be used to strengthen Bing, the longtime rival to Google search.

Sports5 Things We Learnt From Manchester City 4-2 Tottenham by Supers(op): 1:30am On Jan 20, 2023
The match was not just about the players, it was also about the tactical genius of the coaches ( Pep Guardiola and Antonio Conte). Both teams needed the maximum points desperately, City needed the win so they can close the gap on Arsenal while Spurs needed three points so they could cut the gap between themselves and Newcastle United.

(1) Ederson:

Pep Guardiola will have a bit to worry about despite the result of the game following Ederson's poor first-half performance which gifted Tottenham two goals in the final minutes of halftime.

(2) Manchester City's Attack:

Pep Guardiola's forward player came out smoky in the second half of the game at the Etihad Stadium.

Alvarez, Haaland, and Mahrez cut the celebration of the away supporters as each one of them wrote their name on the score sheet in less than fifteen minutes of the second half. The opening two goals came in less than three minutes before Mahrez scored the third goal.

Both Players were key for Manchester City in the game against Tottenham. This was the second time that both players were starting a game together since the start of the season and the combination seems to be something that Manchester City supporters will want to see more often.

(3) Hugo Lloris:

The former French International has been poor in goal since he returned from the Qatar 2022 FIFA World Cup. Lloris has conceded five goals in the last two games and that record will be a big worry for Antonio Conte if Spurs want to finish in the top four.

(4) Antonio Conte:

The former Chelsea manager has been in the news in recent weeks following his talks about Spurs' supporters being impatience and sometimes having too many expectations about the team. The manner of the defeat against Manchester City might see his days at the club numbered if he fails to get them into the top four.

(5) Title Race:

Manchester City have cut down the gap between themselves and Arsenal to five points having played a game more than the Gunners. However, a defeat for Arsenal and a win for for City against Wolves will cut the lead to two points

The drama started after Mercy took to her Twitter handle to show off her PVC while urging fellow Nigerians to collect theirs ahead of the general elections.

Sharing the snapshot of the PVC, Mercy Eke, who celebrated her 29th birthday only a few months ago, blurred out her date of birth.

This, however, did not stop an inquisitive Twitter user from using other information on the card to dig out Mercy’s profile—she was revealed to be 32 years old from her government-issued voter’s card. Read here.

“You covered your date of birth and left VIN that shows everything about you. Does this make sense to you?. Anyway, I’m here to inform your that I just found out that you are 32 years of age. Don’t come here 29th Sept and claim 25 years o. Have a nice day”, the Twitter user wrote.

AgricultureInfidelity: Rivers Man Sets Lover Ablaze | READ DETAILS by Supers(op): 4:01am On Jan 17, 2023
A middle-aged man, identified as Baby Face, has died in a fire incident in his house in the Oyigbo Local Government Area of Rivers State.

The body of his yet-to-be-identified lover was also recovered from the house.

PUNCH Metro gathered that Baby Face invited his lover to his house at Kom Kom, a densely populated area in Oyigbo, on the outskirts of Port Harcourt at the weekend, when the incident occurred.

A source said the man later interrogated his girlfriend over an alleged affair she had with another man, which led to an argument between the lovers.

The eyewitness, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said Baby Face later strangled the woman.

The source said, “After killing the girl, he set his apartment ablaze as a way to cover his track, but was caught up in the inferno. He was burnt to death with the girl’s corpse inside the house.”

He said the incident caused panic in the neighbourhood, as residents deserted the area for fear of being arrested by the police.

The spokesperson for the police in the state, Grace Iringe-Koko, a Superintendent of Police, however, said it was a fire incident.

“The girl died and the man was taken to a hospital where he was receiving treatment, but later died.

“We (police) have launched an investigation into the incident to find out what really happened. We will make our findings public,” she added.

PoliticsNASS Resumes Today, ₦‎23.7 Trillion Loan Restructuring Tops Agenda by Supers(op): 3:34am On Jan 17, 2023
The National Assembly will on Tuesday (today) resume from its Christmas and New Year break to attend to pending issues of national interest, one of which is the request by the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), for restructuring of Ways and Means Advances from the Central Bank of Nigeria.

On December 28, 2022, the National Assembly passed the 2023 Appropriation Bill, the 2022 Supplementary Appropriation Bill and the Finance Bill 2022 and embarked on the break.

A few days earlier, Buhari had requested the Senate and the House of Representatives to approve the restructuring of the WMAs given to the Federal Government by the CBN, noting that the balance, as of December 19, 2022, was N23,719,703,774,306.90.

While the House has yet to consider the presidential request, it suffered a setback at the Senate on December 28, 2022, after the chamber gave it accelerated processing.

Buhari later warned that the country would pay N1.8tn additional interest this year if the National Assembly rejected a loan-to-bond swap request on the CBN overdrafts to the government.

The PUNCH recently reported that the Federal Government paid interests of N4.12tn between 2019 and 2022 on the loans it got from the CBN through Ways and Means Advances, according to data from the Medium-Term Expenditure Framework and Fiscal Strategy Papers and the public presentation documents of the approved budgets by the Ministry of Finance, Budget and National Planning.

However, the President of the Senate, Ahmad Lawan, had also at least twice after the Senate rejection said the lawmakers would revisit the domestic borrowing.

However, there are indications that the presidential request may suffer a similar fate at the House, as some members who spoke to our correspondent are divided over it.

Some members of the House stated that the domestic borrowing not only breached the CBN Act but also the Fiscal Responsibility Act. Others, however, argued that the government must borrow to make life easier for the people.

Another member from Delta State, Nicholas Ossai, recalled how he was ruled out of order when he rose to speak about the growing debt profile of the country under the current regime. He, however, noted that the government had no choice but to take loans to address emergency issues affecting the people.

HealthFamily Seeks N4.7m For Teenager’s Spinal Surgery by Supers(op): 7:00am On Jan 12, 2023
The family of a 15-year-old boy, Emmanuel Adelaja, who was diagnosed with a spine condition, Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis, have sought the help of Nigerians for surgery.

SUPERS.ng gathered that the deformity, which started a year ago, was first detected when his parents noticed that his walking posture was abnormal.

His father, Gbenga, who spoke to our correspondent, said the family was later informed by doctors that the problem had got worse and Emmanuel needed surgery.

He said, “Initially, we saw him bending but we didn’t understand it. I thought it was a walking style for him and I even corrected him about it. However, after a few months, we discovered that it was actually a deformity and we began to take necessary steps.

“We first took him to those who traditionally work on bones because we thought he fell and all that was needed was to straighten the bone. But for months he kept complaining of acute pain and couldn’t walk straight anymore. In the process of going here and there, we later discovered that it was a medical condition, we then visited a hospital.

“We found out that it was scoliosis; a doctor told us that his condition was 90 per cent worse and could only be corrected by spinal surgery.”

The boy’s mother, Kehinde, who left her job to tend to him at home, lamented the depression her son was passing through as she appealed to the public for help.

She said, “My son can no longer walk because of the severe pain he feels all the time. We cannot afford the cost of the surgery. Nigerians, please help me out of this so that my son will be saved from social embarrassment.”

Our correspondent sighted Emmanuel’s medical report, signed by the Consultant Orthopaedic and Spine Surgeon, National Orthopaedic Hospital, Igbobi, Dr Taofeek Adeyemi.

It read in part, “The above-named 15-year-old has been diagnosed with Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis. In view of the magnitude of the deformity, he will benefit from staged spinal surgery to realign the spine and halt the progression of the deformity.”

The surgery cost was estimated by the hospital at N4.7m.

Interested Nigerians may donate to the family’s GT bank account number: Gbenga E. Adelaja, 0016177740.

BusinessMarketers Predict Six-month Fuel Scarcity, Prices Rise by Supers(op): 6:49am On Jan 12, 2023
The supply hitches associated with the distribution of Premium Motor Spirit, popularly called petrol, may persist till June this year, oil marketers stated on Wednesday.

Nigeria’s downstream oil sector has been grappling with cases of incessant petrol scarcity since last year.

The sole importer of the commodity – Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited, has repeatedly complained of the enormous burden of shouldering fuel subsidy for the country.

On Monday, the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Chief Timipre Sylva, said NNPC was selling petrol at a loss because of its mandate from the Federal Government as regards fuel subsidy.

“If you are a businessman, look at it from this perspective, that you are now in the business where you are mandated to sell at a loss to the public. That is not an easy job, I must tell you,” the minister stated.

Last week, the Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning, Zainab Ahmed, said the Federal Government had budgeted about N3.6tn for fuel subsidy till June 2023.

Reacting to the development, oil marketers stated on Wednesday that the fuel supply crisis in many parts of the country that often leads to fuel scarcity, might persist till June, based on the government’s plan to end petrol subsidy in that month.

The National Public Relations Officer, Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria, Chief Ukadike Chinedu, told our correspondent that fuel imports and subsidy were making Nigerians suffer.

He said, “This issue of subsidy and the importation of petroleum products are the major reasons why we are suffering like this and having epileptic supply of PMS. This may drag till the current administration leaves in May or till June this year.
“The exchange rate is affecting fuel imports, which is also why the cost of petroleum products are high. We use too much naira to chase the few dollars that are available. So the solution is for us to refine our crude here and get our depots working.”

He added, “Also, we should note that most times when an administration is leaving, there is usually scarcity of products. It happened during the time of former President Goodluck Jonathan.

“This is because suppliers will be very weary of selling petroleum products so that their debts will not be carried over to the next administration. Successive governments have suffered this epileptic distribution of petroleum products during transition to a new government.

“The government is winding up, and if you are a supplier you have to be careful in terms of supplying petroleum products. Remember that when Jonathan was there, marketers who were supplying products stopped and went on strike, demanding that they must be paid their arrears.”

The President, Petroleum Retail Outlet Owners Association of Nigeria, Billy Gillis-Harry, also stated that the availability of petrol for marketers to distribute had remained an issue of concern.

“Let there be products to sell. That is what we are yearning for. Once that problem is sorted, then others shall be addressed too,” he stated.

Commenting on the issue, a former President, Association of National Accountants of Nigeria, Dr. Sam Nzekwe, told our correspondent that the crisis in the downstream oil sector would be best addressed when Nigeria’s refineries become functional.

IPMAN complains

The Chairman, IPMAN Satellite depot, Akin Akinrinade, told The PUNCH that its members were yet to take delivery of any product from the state oil firm.

He said, “We have yet to see anything. They promised us something in December, but now they said January. All they’ve done is ask us to submit names and change from the old system-NNPC Express to NNPC Retail. Other than that, we are yet to receive any product.

“But I can assure you that this scarcity will continue well after June if NNPCL does not supply us products directly and at regulated price.”

Akinrinade also said the price of fuel had hit between N222/N225 at private depots as of last Friday.

National Operations Controller, IPMAN, Mike Osatuyi, also told The SUPERS that his members were yet to get any product from the NNPCL.

“We are still waiting. We will wait until the middle of this month before we react. But as of last week, our members buy fuel above N200 per litre. But information reaching me is that as of today, the price has increased to N230 per litre, without transportation and other expenses”, he said.

In December, Osatuyi had told The SUPERS that his members were holding strategic meetings with the new NNPCL Retail Managing Director, Hubb Stockman, who promised to supply them products directly at government regulated price of N148/litre starting from this month.

However, members of the association, according to Osatuyi and Akinrinnade, were yet to receive any products despite having compiled necessary lists, and switching from the old NNPCL Express platform, to the NNPCL Retail as directed by Stockman.

The SUPERS reached out to the Executive Secretary of the Major Oil Marketers Association of Nigeria, Clement Isong, on why some of its members did not have products.

He had yet to respond as of the time of filing this report.

However, a top member of the MOMAN who claimed anonymity told The SUPERS, that although the scarcity had eased, some of its stations currently do not have supplies.

“The scarcity has eased and things have gone back to normal. No queues and our stations sell at normal regulated prices. However, some of our stations who don’t have supplies will be supplied”, he had told The SUPERS last Thursday.

The spokesperson for the Depots and Petroleum Products Marketers Association of Nigeria, Adewole Olufemi, said the depots were in need of more fuel supplies from the NNPCL.

“Until and unless the queues are completely eliminated, we’ll require more volume than usual, DAPPMAN cannot be satisfied. We’re working with the sole supplier, NNPC Ltd and the regulator to ensure PMS is available nationwide”, he said regarding the scarcity.

On skyrocketing ex-depot’s prices, Adewole said just like the NNPCL, depot owners were also on a recover-all-cost regime.

“Costs incurred by marketers, vessel chartering, trucking and approved margins will be recovered just as NNPC Ltd does to recover its cost inputs”, he added.

The spokesperson for NNPCL, Garba Deen, could not be reached on his official line for his comment.

A Twitter user @IkeokwuChidozie, who shared the video and tagged the Adejobi and the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, wrote, “When and how did we get here as a society? Egbon @Princemoye1 please we need this guy prosecuted and the accomplice too.”

Adejobi, in his reaction to the video, urged mothers to take better care of their babies.

He wrote, “Every one of us can see this again. How did he get the baby? His son? Or niece or cousin? Whatever it is, mothers must learn from this and not entrust their babies to the wrong hands.

“Not everyone can babysit or take care of your baby for you. We need more info about him. He must be caused to face the wrath of the law. This is too bad. But above all, mothers must learn from this.”

Meanwhile, some Nigerians slammed the unidentified man for the action.

A Twitter user, @olamideprophyte, wrote, “Oh my goodness this guy should be in jail for a long time and the person recording the video.”

Another user, @devugo1, wrote, “This is sad to see. You’d be shocked that the parents are the ones involved in this act.”

Some Tweeps also suspected the video was recorded by the baby’s mother.

A user, @thisiskaymop, wrote, “I think it’s the mother making the video and still laughing.”

@LateefSunmola also wrote, “You’ll be surprised that the person behind the camera will be the mother of the child… Why all this ehn oga oo.”

SportsCheck Out Nigerians Top Clubs’ Scorer Charts by Supers(op): 4:11am On Jan 11, 2023
By supers.ng

With the 2022/23 season midway and action back in full swing after the World Cup break, a host of Nigerian footballers are making their mark in Europe, topping their club’s scorers charts, writes EBENEZER BAJELA

Victor Osimhen (Napoli)

Osimhen looks head and shoulders above the continent’s other goal-getters at the moment and added his 10th league goal of the season on Sunday as Napoli defeated Sampdoria 2-0 away.

It was a valuable triumph for the Partenopei — who lost their first league game of the season at Internazionale on Wednesday — as they immediately got their title challenge back on track ahead of the visit of Juventus on Friday.

Osimhen’s latest strike keeps him well out in front in the Serie A goals charts — two ahead of Lautaro Martinez, Marko Arnautovic and M’Bala Nzola — while he also cemented his spot as Napoli’s top scorer with 12 goals across all competitions.

Closest to the Nigerian is Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, who has six goals in the league and eight across all competitions.

The former Lille man’s impressive scoring form also saw him equal a record set by the legendary George Weah in the Italian topflight.

Osimhen and Weah are the only Africans to have hit double figures for goals in three separate Serie A campaigns, with the latter having done it between 1995 and 1998.

The Nigerian is still some way off the Liberia President’s overall goal haul in Italy’s topflight; Weah netted 46 across five seasons with AC Milan, the most by an African player in the league, while Osimhen currently has 34 since signing for Napoli from Lille in 2020.

Paul Onuachu (Genk)

After a sloppy start to the 2022/23 season, Onuachu has rediscovered his goalscoring form and the Nigerian marked his 100th Belgian Pro League appearance with a fine strike as he latched onto Joseph Paintsil’s cross to send a first-time effort past Simon Mignolet, in the Brugge goal, on Sunday to prove that he remains one of the best strikers in Europe.

It was the forward’s 14th goal in 15 games this season and has notched up 71 goals in 100 games with six assists since he arrived at the club three years ago from Denmark.

The 28-year-old is Genk’s top scorer and has scored exactly double of the number of goals scored by the club’s second top scorer, Bryan Heynen.
Chuba Akpom (Middlesbrough)

Akpom’s meteoric rise this season has stunned many, as the Arsenal academy graduate kept scoring goals with reckless abandon.

The 27-year-old has flourished under manager Michael Carrick this term.

Since the former Manchester United midfielder took over at the Riverside on October 24, Akpom has netted 10 goals in 11 matches in all competitions, all of which have been scored inside the box.

Boro have won seven of those matches and thus firmly ensconced themselves in the Championship promotion race.

Overall, the Super Eagles hopeful has scored 15 goals this season for the Championship side, making him the club’s top scorer, nine goals more than Matt Crooks, who is the club’s second top scorer.

Such form saw Akpom linked with a move back to the Premier League, but the Teesside club have since moved quickly to take up the option to extend Akpom’s contract until the summer of 2024.

Akpom is thriving and it will take something special to displace him as the league’s in-form frontman.

Odion Ighalo (Al Hilal)

After finishing the 2021/22 season as the top scorer in Saudi Arabia, contributing 24 goals for Al-Shabab and Al Hilal, Ighalo is enjoying another stellar season with Al Hilal in the Saudi Arabia Professional League with his goalscoring form getting better despite his age.

This season, the 33-year-old striker has already scored eight goals in 12 games for Al Hilal, placing him as the club’s top scorer ahead of Moussa Marega, who has only managed half the number of goals scored by Ighalo.

The Nigerian is one goal behind Al-Nassr’s Brazilian forward Anderson Talisca for the top scorer award in the league.
