On the 26th of October, 2022, The Central Bank of Nigeria announced that it would redesign the ₦200,₦500 and ₦1,000 notes. The announcement was made by the Bank’s Governor, Godwin Emefiele. The new naira notes will begin circulating from the 15th of December 2022. They will be used together with the existing notes until the CBN’s deadline of 31st, January 2023.

In this article, we take a deep dive into this announcement, simplifying the news and answering all your questions about the naira redesign & what it means for your business.

Why is this redesign happening?

According to the CBN, there is a lot of hoarding of naira notes by members of the public. This means that people are holding on to money without spending it!

“AS AT THE END OF SEPTEMBER 2022, AVAILABLE DATA AT THE CBN INDICATE THAT N2.73 TRILLION OUT OF THE N3.23 TRILLION CURRENCY IN CIRCULATION, WAS OUTSIDE THE VAULTS OF COMMERCIAL BANKS ACROSS THE COUNTRY; AND SUPPOSEDLY HELD BY THE PUBLIC.”

But there is more! the CBN has other concerns that have necessitated the redesign of these naira notes.

The Bank stated that there is a shortage of clean and fit naira notes in circulation. This shortage has also come with a security risk because it has led to a rise in counterfeiting especially the N500 and N1,000 notes.

Finally, the naira notes have not been redesigned for over 20 years. This goes against global best practices that require currency to be redesigned every 5 to 8 years.

When will the new naira notes be released?

The new naira notes of N200, N500 and N1000 will begin circulation on December 15, 2022.

Does it mean the old naira notes will be invalid from December 15, 2022?

No, they won’t. The new and existing naira notes will circulate together. They will both be legal tender meaning that they are acceptable as a means of exchange for the purchase of goods and services.

Can I return naira notes to banks immediately?

Yes. You can pay these notes into your bank account immediately. But you will only be able to withdraw the new naira notes when the Central Bank begins to issue them from the 15th of December.

Nigerian singer, Victony had a pleasant surprise for the crowd at Davido’s concert last night as he stood up for the first time after his accident and we have the video of that moment

In the video, Victony is seen performing his song with Mayorkun, Holy Father on stage with Davido at his concert while standing up. The video was shared via Youtube on Saturday, the 25th of December 2021.

Victony had been consigned to a wheelchair since his accident earlier this year which claimed the lives of one of his close friends, leaving him and two others severely injured.

Shortly after his accident, Victony’s friends created a gofundme to raise funds for his operation, and Davido who got wind of it decided to donated massively for him to undego the operation.

In one of the videos we got from Davido’s concert, Victony was about to perform his collaboration with Mayorkun when he requested that the DJ stop the song.

He went ahead to inform the crowd that he was going to give them a Christmas present by standing up to perform for the first time since his accident.

Shatu Garko, an 18-year-old has won the 2021 Miss Nigeria beauty pageant, held in Lagos state last night.

The 18-year-old who is from Kano state in the North West region of Nigeria is an hijab model and says she loves horse riding.

He walked to the stage with a peaceful, guitar-assisted acapella version of his huge hit, Love Nwantiti, before singing along to the recording with the help of the enthusiastic audience.

Soon after, a video of Wizkid joyfully mouthing the lyrics by the stage surfaced, revealing that he was carried up in the songs.

1. Lojay

Lojay made his official debut in the mainstream in 2021 with his collaborative EP with Sarz, LV, and ATTN. Wizkid was also featured on the EP’s single of the same name.

Nigerians need to stop believing they can get rich or become wealthy through the killing of fellow citizens for money rituals. Don’t be deceived by Nollywood bullshit.

Why is it that there’s no dollar options in money? There’s none because it doesn’t exist! You can’t make money using human body parts. If it is possible that one can really make money through rituals, why are Nigerians not making money in foreign currencies such as dollars, pounds that has more value than naira?

We all know very well that the Central Bank or an affiliated bank agency is responsible for printing currencies and they come with specific numbers. If we have to account for the money some people say they are making through rituals, where are they getting the numbers that tally with what is in circulation?

Okay let’s assume they get the money it from banks with supernatural powers, what happens to that branch where the money disappears from? What happens to the Branch Managers? Are they not going to account for it? If that’s the case, you know how many branch managers of banks would be crying out every day that money has disappeared?

Have you heard from any of these commercial banks that they are looking for money? That money mysteriously disappeared and nowhere to be found?

My point is that let’s put all these superstitions aside and accept that some people actually steal to make money and tie it around money rituals. People can actually make money by conniving with bank officials in a way we don’t know and start flaunting it that they did money rituals. It doesn’t make sense!

Alot of young people are dying prematurely all in the name money rituals that doesn’t exist. When I see how young men are killing their fathers, mothers, and relatives in the name of rituals for money, I cry because it is an illusion.

Money Rituals baseless and does not exist anywhere. Instead of providing them with evidence-based ways of making money, they will tell them to go and bring the heads of their family members. That’s bullshit.

Drake was nominated for best rap album Certified Lover Boy and Way 2 Sexy featuring Future and Young Thug, which earned a nomination for best rap performance.

Drake wants no part in competing for a Grammy. The four-time Grammy winner and his management asked the Recording Academy to withdraw his two nominations from the final-round ballot. They said Drake’s request was honored by the academy.

The Canadian rapper and singer is among the world's best-selling music artistes who have over 170 million records sold. He has also won four Grammy Awards, two Brit Awards and holds various Billboard hot 100 records.

On Monday, the Grammys removed Drake’s nominations from the nominee list on its website.

Why was Drake nominated?

Drake had called out the Grammys in previous years. The rapper had shown his displeasure for not being nominated outside the rap category.

He also took aim at the importance of the Grammy Awards during his acceptance speech after God’s Plan won best rap song in 2019. “If there’s people who have regular jobs who are coming out in the rain, in the snow, spending their hard-earned money to buy tickets to come to your shows, you don’t need this right here. I promised you, you already won,” said Drake while holding his trophy. Before the rapper continued, his speech was cut off.

Some have also speculated that this decision might have been influenced by the fact that his name is involved in the lawsuit for the Astroworld Tragedy in Houston last month.

The Grammys will take place in Los Angeles on 31 January.

Singer, Akon has revealed that the separation of Nigerian music duo, P-Square, broke his heart.

The ‘Lonely’ hitmaker made this known while speaking to Channels Television on the sidelines of the Expo 2020 Dubai.

According to him, he was heartbroken by their split because they are like family to him, coupled with the fact that they were born from the same womb.

He asserted that their separation may have been due to a lot of pressure from their career and relationship, adding that money cannot cause a rift between them.

He said;

“It broke my heart because we are family. These are brothers and they shared the same womb and I always felt money should not get in between them.

“It was being together that made them who they were. But sometimes you have differences [between people from the same] family and there are other aspects of it – there is pressure in the music business, there is a lot of pressure in relationships.”

This comes on the heels of the reconciliation of the singers, Peter and Paul Okoye, after years apart.
