Ijaw oil., i guess.
If Google cannot come to your aid, then you are averse to knowledge. How are you different from Bolo Haram?

Telling me Ilajes are not yorubas, tells me how shallow you are and I cannot be wasting my time lecturing you.

Ijaw's oil? On whose land? E gba mii. On our own land. Seems you really need a bit of lecturing.

We are contented with yoruba's oil in Ondo, without even bringing Itshekiris, our cousin, into the picture.

I think the child right act as clearly stated 18 to be the age of consent for marriage. The only problem with its enforcement is that it has not been domesticated in all states of the country.

I also think this new law will really make it more difficult for anybody to marry a girl that is under 18. If it is now illegal to sleep with a girl under 18, marrying a girl under 18 will technically be illegal since sex is inevitable in a marriage. My opinion though.
Note the words being used by the Act -- Unlawful carnal knowledge and defilement.

For stated that have not adopted the Child Right Act, most especially the northern states, they will never adopt it again. FOr the ones that have adopted it, having sex under whatever guise with under 18 is now criminal.

You see the problem is with the Nigeria state. Creating problems with their useless boundary demarcation for economic payouts to their undeserving policitical aprons as a scheme to hold clans hostage in foreign land just to continue their Fulani domination in the Nigeria state. These are calculated human flaws just to engage the unfortunate minds in revolutionary trends wherever they are entrapped with the majority stakeholders of their phantom geographical creation
I quite agree with you. The political dermarcation did not take the homogenous nature of ethnicities into consideration.

Yorubas are in Edo, Kwara and Kogi. Kogi and Kwara are under NC geopolitical zone, while Edo is in SS. Igbos are in Delta, Rivers and maybe Benue and they are in totally different geopolitical zone with their kinsmen.

Traditional wedding is not necessarily compulsory.(My parents never had one...church only+ registration at church by the Law.).

But a child is not legally recognized as being able to give valid consent to se...x.....even if the parents say yes.(and the parents could be prosecuted under the law if they facilitated such a union).
I really doubt whether there is any marriage without the traditional aspect of it being done. Your parent's own is an exception and aberration. Most times the traditional is even compulsory more than the court or church or mosque. Speaking from Yoruba marriages, dunno of the rest though.

The parental consent is really taking responsibility for the child, i believe. I think they should make the stupid law more explicit, it is quite ambiguous and a smart criminal will get a way with it easily.

bushdoc9919:
Well, under such a law(Indeed under British common law...under which most Nigerian law is based)...a child cannot validly consent to a marriage,or indeed to s..ual relations.......so such a relationship is illegal...and the ''husband'' is liable to be jailed.
Under the customary law of Nigeria which our marriage law derives its root from, the parental consent is the most important thing. Once there is parental consent to the mariage, no matter the age of the child, the husband can consumate the marrriage, except there is angreement between the families ab initio.

Though I am not a lawyer.

That is why you will still have to do traditional wedding whether you are having court or church or mosque marriage. The husband cannot be jailed.

Like someone said, a part of the law is for the rich and a part is for the poor.

The words ''defilement'' and ''unlawful carnal knowledge'' are talking about ra.pe.

If someone marries an 11year old kid, and consumate the relationship in bed, will that be seen as defilement? Will that not be seen as conjugal bliss between husband and wife? There is no way marriage will be seen as unlawful carnal knowledge.

Ask the settlers what happened to them in 1998 when they went beyond their boundaries. It took UN intervention before Ilajes could stop the total annihilation of their less than 20,000 population.

Trading means moving with produce you have exclusiveness(comparative advantage) to a "point" where you exchange same for another (trade by barter or the use of cowries) in the ancient days. If the Yoruba inhabitants has quartered their trading partners... What is the economic significance if the visitors is deprived of their crafts/agric/Smiths. Does it mean that the lands of the ijaws were no longer fertile to accept their host hospitality?
In the olden days, many things can be responsible for it.

1. As a way of forging closer trading partnership, a party might either ask or be invited to settle on the hosts land, which does not necessarily means the original homeland in now infertile.

2. inter-marriage can also be responsible.

3. accommodation of refugees from a war or natural disaster.

However, there has never been any ancient history of hostilities between the Arogbo Ijaws and Yorubas. The only existing history is that of trading. Therefore option 1 and 2 are most appropriate for your question.

3. some PDP members that have lost their means of livelihood -- our national coffer.

This cannot get PDP any where. It is only projecting you as sore losers, who is too bereaved with the election loss to think straight and criticise objectively.

How do we reconcile 900million assets with the 2.7billion house "revelation" saTANoids came up with last week? Or Houses are no more Assets in saTANoids book of accounting?
