I know we are not supposed to judge, and I also know d bible didn't prescribe any particular type of haircut....
But as a Priest who ministers to thousands of congregation, from Gods altar, and whom so many people look up to and emulate, is this haircut proper?...
I know its a trending haircut, I have it on me too but the question is, is it proper for a priest?...

Politics / [pls Read] Concerning MASSOB,IPOB And Other OBs - Surplus90 by Surplus90(m): 3:26pm On Oct 23, 2015
I'm a Nigerian first and foremost. An Igbo-Nigerian if you insist. In fully committed to the Nigeria project. I want to be part of the effort to make Nigeria the number one destination for every good thing!

Nigeria is our collective responsibility, and unanimous assignment! Just as no one has a say in his/her birth, so no one determines what nation he/she gets born in.
The current crop of secessionist propagandists and zealots have no meaningful rhetoric. While you judge these statements, ask yourself the following questions:

What manner of persons are these fellows? Are they people worth lending my ear-time to? Are they individuals my children can emulate? What have they done and achieved within the last 20 years socially, educationally, economically, scientifically, etc? Those following them, what are their intellectual capacities, our are they just mere touts and dropouts who have no input socially? Kindly investigate these matters before you become an intellectual lion roused by the creaking of a cricket.
Imagine the chasmic intelligence void!
It does not rest on the whim of a group of individuals to declare tiredness as a feeble reason for breaking out of a nation. It's sheer juvenile emotionalism and effervescent sentimentality to lend your voice to such childish tantrums. Carefully examine those agitating for this madness, what do they have to offer to their immediate society?
Go to their villages, what kind of persons are they? How many humans have been improved because of their personal efforts? Check their personal lifestyles, what can they offer to your children? Will you as a parent allow them be your children's teachers? Do they have what it takes to educate your children?

What exactly have they achieved that should make you agree with them? Tell you what, such MASSOB, IPOB, etc rabble-rousers have nothing good to offer except deafening razzmatazz aimed at aggrandizement.

Take Nnamdi Kanu for instance, how many students has he given scholarships to improve their opportunities in life? Where and when has he ever provided or solicited for medical services for anybody? Who has ever benefited from his philanthropic efforts? And he wants you to put your children's, nephews' and nieces' future in jeopardy because of a cause as destructive as his?
Do you know the economic, human, emotional, environmental and anthropological cost of secession? If you don't know, please ask your parents!
Are you aware that the followers of those agitating for this foible have no understanding of governance? Do you understand that it is aimless zeal without knowledge and understanding that drives such people.

If there was ever a time for us to be sober and reflect on nation-building, it is NOW! Following the secessionist hype of the ilk of Nnamdi Kanu sounds like encouraging a teacher to encourage your kids to leave your house and authority whenever they're tired of your parenthood! That's the insanity of IPOB, MASSOB!

And why are there two fronts now? Thought they're supposed to be united under one umbrella and achieve the one goal? Hidden interests are at work here! Better join hands and let's build a nation our kids would be proud of and happy with, and leave this foible to fizzle out without adding more gays to it.

The Nigerian Armed Forces are constitutionally mandated to defend and protect the integrity of the boundaries and peoples of Nigeria from external AND internal threats! Nigeria is a great nation and it's ours! Don't encourage folly and misguidedness...

...God bless us all!

“If they ever tell my story let them say I walked with giants, men rise and fall like the Winter wheat but these names will never die… Let them say I lived in the time of Hector, tamer of horses…let them say I lived in the time of Achilles”- the Iliyad, Homer.
The words of Odysseus in Homer’s epic and ancient poem titled ”The Iliyad” (which in my view is the greatest poem that was ever written and which was quoted in the opening and last scene of the famous Hollywood blockbuster film titled ”Troy”) have always moved me. Those words are deep and profound: they stir my soul and rekindle my spirit.
They speak of and reflect the essence of Ancient Greece with its rich and exciting history, its extraordinary heroes and heroines and its all-powerful and all-knowing gods, titans and immortals. How I wish that I could conjure up such great and powerful words about the history of my nation Nigeria and her heroes past.
How I wish that the Nigerian people had their own Odysseus’ , Achilles’, Agamemnons and Hectors. How I wish they had their own ancient poets and great thinkers like Socrates, Plato, Aristotle and Homer who could remind generations to come about our past exploits with their inspiring, compelling and historic prose.
Yet I look at the Nigeria of today and I am not encouraged or inspired. As a matter of fact I am deeply saddened. I see no heroes on the horizon but only questionable pretenders and fallen caricatures that have sold their heritage and destiny for a mess of porridge and that couldn’t give a fig about what history or posterity will say about them or their country.
Many have asked why I should say such things. Permit me to answer that pertinent question by posing a few of my own.
I start by asking: is this the Nigeria of Murtala Mohammed and Theophilius Yakubu Danjuma? Is this the nation that helped to liberate Angola, Mozambique, Zimbabwe and South Africa?
Is this the nation that restored sanity and stability to Sierra Leone, that brought an end to a civil war in Liberia, that fought so gallantly in Burma and Somalia and that quelled a military coup in Sao Tome and Principe?
Is this the nation whose wealth once knew no bounds and whose middle class once owned the finest cars and properties in London, Paris and New York? Is this the nation whose beautiful people once graced the streets of Belgravia, Chelsea, Hampstead and Knightsbridge?
Is this the country that once nationalized BP and that gave Margaret Thatcher sleepless nights over apartheid South Africa?
Is this the nation that once stood up to the mighty Boers and whose ancestors studied at Oxford and Cambridge as far back as the 1800’s?
Is this the nation whose inhabitants and various ethnic nationalities once ruled vast empires and whose progenitors contributed so much to the traditions, religion and culture of Ancient Egypt?
Is this the country that once fought a bitter and brutal civil war, yet declared ”no victor, no vanquished” and, in the spirit of love, came back as one? Is this the country which has been through thick and thin and yet whose people remained ever so resilient and always put a smile on their faces?
Is this the country where giants once held court and where the greats of old once presided? Where did we go wrong? What has happened to our people and what has afflicted our country? When did our leaders become spineless cowards and deceivers? When did the green white green of our nation’s flag become soiled with human faeces and when was it torn to shreds?
When did we shy away from fighting our own battles and prosecuting our own wars? When did we start bowing our heads in shame as events unfold in our country? When did we start sitting down silently as international newscasters speak about our nation in painful, disdainful, hushed and condescending tones?
What has happened to the ever courageous, ever smiling, ever confident and ever dependable Nigerian who shook the world with his arrogance and confidence and who spoke of his nation with pride and joy?
What has happened to our great army that was once the pride of Africa and that once made us so proud? What has happened to our great intellectuals and our men and women of courage and vision who once, like a collosus, bestrode the world?
What has happened to the stubborn and proud yet warm, friendly and profoundly good people that Nigerians once were? What has happened to the people that were once regarded as the hope of Africa and the pride of every black man on the planet?
Where and when did we go astray? How and when did it all go wrong?
When did we lose our strength, our wealth, our honour and our power? When did we lose our excellence, our confidence, our dignity and our self-respect? When did we become so weak and so helpless? When did we turn into killers, savages and barbarians?
When did we become so pitiful that the whole world mocks us and heaps insults on us so easily? When did they start saying that we have ”no serious government”, that we have ”lost control of large portions of our nation” and that we can’t even protect our own children? When did we become incapable of defending our borders and protecting our people?
When did we turn into a laughing stock and a reference point for incompetence, stupidity, cowardice, ignorance, evil, cluelessness and all that is bad to the rest of the world?
When did other nations start giving us lessons on how to fight insurgency and how to prosecute our wars? When did our people start clamouring for foreign armies to enter our land, violate our sovereignty and march on our sacred soil?
When did we start having to ask others to come and solve our local problems? O Nigeria, how are the mighty fallen. Truly ours is a nation afflicted. She is finished and there is little hope of any form of redemption or resurrection.
The honeymoon is over and the glory has departed. One hundred years of a forced and failed marriage has ended in a bitter yet undeniable divorce. We have lost it all and there is no going back. Those that wish to break up our nation for sport and bring our people to their knees have had their way.
Those that wish to watch us slaughter one another in an orgy of mindless violence and that wish to establish their AFRICOM in our shores will soon be here and we shall be occupied forever.
O Nigeria, how are the mighty fallen. I loved Nigeria but now I have stopped believing in her. She is saddled with many different sub- nations that were simply incompatible right from the start.
She is plagued and cursed with one particular sub-nation whose ruling elite are dangerous and unyielding, whose guile and deceit is second to none, who treat their own people with contempt and derision, who believe that they were born to rule, who think that power belongs to them, who suppress the religious and ethnic minorities within their ranks and who were taught from an early age that there was none besides them. Those people have killed Nigeria. They and those who have consistently bowed and trembled before them and who have always allowed them to have their way. Our nation has become a cruel joke- she is a maliciously contrived contraption that has shattered many dreams and frustrated many ambitions and aspirations. This was a country that was created for the benefit of just a few at the cost of the misery and pain of so many.
I will never accept the idea of living in a nation side by side with religious extremists who slit the throats of children, who habitually slaughter the innocents and who abduct and fornicate with small girls. Animals have no place in the homes of men.
It is time for us to stop pretending: let the terrorists and their friends in high places break away and establish their own country where they can marry as many young girls as they please and chop off as many limbs as they want. Let them form a nation where they can stone adulterers and turn women into chattels that are not even worthy of life.
Let those of us from the west establish Oduduwa and let us celebrate and enjoy our freedom from the bondage and ineptitude of a cruel failed state that has no soul and that lacks humanity and compassion.
Let us be liberated from the deceit that is known as Nigeria: a nation that once was but that is no more. Let us be free of Nigeria: a nation where injustice, evil, persecution, insensitivity, impugnity, terror, graft and wickedness reign supreme.
Let us be rid of Nigeria: a country where those of us that had the misfortune of being born on the ”wrong” side of the regional divide or who are adherents of the ”wrong” religious faith are butchered for our heritage and can never be treated as equals. Give us Oduduwa or let us die.
Yet we will eventually take our freedom by force if it is not freely given to us. We shall take it by fire: by the shedding of blood and by our own bleeding if necessary. We will take it by fire and by sacrificing our lives if that is what we are forced to do.
What we will never do is continue to live in perpetual slavery in a nation called Nigeria that is afflicted with feeble rulers and peopled by religious bigots, sexual deviants and bloodthirsty terrorists.
We shall not allow ourselves to be consummed by the weakness and ineptitude of our present-day rulers and the sheer incompetence of those that do not have the courage or the moral authority to crush the beasts that have abducted and enslaved our girls.
I have had enough. I say goodbye Nigeria: give us Oduduwa or let us die.

Politics / Nigeria’s Consumer Protection Agency Raids DSTV Office In Lagos by Surplus90(m): 10:43am On Oct 16, 2015
Officials of the Consumer Protection Council on Thursday raided the head office of pay-TV service provider, MultiChoice Nigeria, in Lagos.
The officials, armed with a warrant, were accompanied by policemen and journalists to the company’s office at about 1pm.
They allegedly left with laptop computers and important documents about the company’s operations.
The operation was led by the Council’s Director of Legal Services, Emmanuel Ataguba.
Officials of Multichoice Nigeria could not be reached for comments on the raid.
However, in a statement on Thursday, the CPC said it conducted the raid in an effort to checkmate any obstruction of the ongoing investigation into the operations of the Digital Satellite Television (DStv) by the Council.
It said it did so in line with relevant sections of its enabling law.
“CPC, in line with one of its mandates to provide redress for consumer abuse, commenced investigation into the operations of DStv based on a barrage of complaints of alleged consumer rights violations against the company,” the statement signed by Mr. Ataguba said.
He said “the CPC commenced investigative sittings into the operations of Multichoice Nigeria, the franchise owners of DStv on Friday, July 31, 2015.
“This followed a barrage of consumer complaints alleging wide-range abuse of subscribers’ rights. These include poor quality of service such as incessant disruption of service without compensation, wrongful disconnection of service during subsisting subscriptions, decoder swap irregularities and poor redress mechanism and customer service.
“The inaugural sitting provided a four-man DStv team the opportunity to respond to questions from the CPC investigating panel, and was adjourned for the DStv team to provide more documents. Since then, subsequent sittings of the CPC investigating panel have suffered abrupt adjournments and disruptions at the instance of Multichoice Nigeria.”
The council said the disruptions started with a letter received on August 25 from Multichoice Nigeria acknowledging the CPC request for additional information and asking for a six-week extension for the continuation of the investigation, claiming that the notice of the summons was short.
The statement continued, “The CPC declined the six-week extension request, countering the short notice claim of Multichoice Nigeria, insisting that its representatives at the first sitting of the investigation were constructively put on notice to produce additional documents. In the interest of justice, the CPC granted a postponement of two weeks to Thursday, September 10, 2015.”
However, there were indications Thursday that the raid followed a meeting between Multichoice officials and those of the Council which broke down few days ago.
At the meeting which held in Abuja, the CPC allegedly asked the company to hand over personal information of its subscribers as well as its exclusive contract in Nigeria, a request which the company reportedly turned down.
But the Multichoice team, led by its Managing Director, John Ugbe, was said to have told the CPC that it owed its subscribers a duty to protect their personal information.
A source at the meeting said Mr. Ugbe explained that releasing sensitive information about subscribers would amount to a breach of the trust subscribers reposed in his company when they signed up to its services.
He however expressed his company’s readiness to cooperate with the CPC in its effort to ensure that subscribers obtained improved customer satisfaction.

Politics / We Can’t Jam Radio Biafra’s Frequency — Police by Surplus90(m): 1:56pm On Sep 13, 2015
The Commissioner of Police, Abia State Command, Mr. Joshak Habila, has said the force is depending on members of the public for information on the location of Radio Biafra.

He also said there is an agency of the Federal Government that is responsible for clamping down on frequencies of illegal radio stations.

Joshak, who said this in an exclusive interview with our correspondent in Umuahia on Saturday, said the police alone could not track down the radio station without useful information from members of the public.

He said, “There are those responsible for tracking down operators of unapproved radio frequencies. Police do have some roles to play but I don’t think the police are the ones that will be able to jam the frequency.

“There is an agency of government responsible for that. I think members of the public have a better role to play in volunteering information to security agencies to clamp down on the radio station.

“I think it is the duty of everyone to help trace them because if they exist they don’t exist in the blues. They exist among members of the public. Thus, it is those who reside around here that should be able to volunteer information.

“The indigenous people of Biafra are said to be the people operating the Radio Biafra. We are gathering information but you should know that they are subversive and have also spoken against constituted authorities.”

While Joshak described the activities of the guerrilla radio as “a very big issue to be decided by the Inspector General of Police, he stated that the law was very clear about those who engaged in subversive activities to run down a nation and how they should be handled under the justice system.

Radio Biafra, which broadcasts on the FM frequency, has continued to freely operate despite recent claims by the Nigerian Communication Commission that it had jammed its frequency.

The radio station is said to be gaining more audience in Aba, Port Harcourt and Enugu where its signals are very strong.

Politics / 9-year-old Nigerian Becomes World’s Youngest Microsoft Certified Professional by Surplus90(m): 6:59pm On Jul 30, 2015
Nigeria has come on the global scene in the
information communication technology sector, as
9-year-old Jomiloju Tunde-Oladipo joined the
community of achievers when he became one of
the world’s youngest 2013 certified Microsoft
Office specialists for Office Word 2010.
Jomiloju, a primary 6 pupil of Role Model School,
owned by DayStar Christian Centre, Oregun, Ikeja
Lagos, broke the record created in 2012 by 10-
year-old JSS1 student, Seyi-Ojo Anjolaoluwa, who
was adjudged the youngest Nigerian and one of
the youngest people in the world to have become
a Microsoft certified professional.
Jomiloju took the July 2013 examination while in
primary 5, after passing all the preparatory stages
leading to the final examinations following intense
teachings in school and trainings he received from
United Global Resources Ltd, an accredited ICT
training firm.
Odion Oyakhire, the center manager in charge of
the school noted that his firm, “encourages pupils
to learn ICT and get certified.”
Oyakhire explained that his firm coordinates the
certification examinations for several schools and
was proud to associate with Jomiloju and Role
Model School on this feat. He said that the
certification examination is an online, real-time
test.
Before setting this new record in Nigeria for the
certification examination, Jomiloju led his school
to glory in June 2013, when they won an ICT quiz
competition with 15 participating school in Lagos.
The competition was put together by United
Global Resources.
The examination report showed Jomiloju scored
769 points, 69 points higher than the required 700
to be recognized as a Microsoft Office Specialist.

Politics / Breaking News: Big Brother Africa 2015 Cancelled - Vanguard by Surplus90(m): 5:11pm On Jul 26, 2015
This is not good news for African viewers as the biggest reality TV show in Africa, Big Brother Africa (BBA) may not take place this year as expected.
This is due to lack of sponsorship. The organizers of the show, Africa Magic and Endemol were unable to get sponsorship for this year’s edition of the show.
The Manager of Multichoice Ghana, Anne Sackey confirmed to peganews that they at Multichoice Ghana have received notice from MNET that this year’s edition of Big Brother Africa will not hold.
She explained that MNET did not give them any reasons as to why they will not be doing the Big Brother this year, but then, she personally thinks it’s due to sponsorship constraints.

Politics / Terrorist-prisoners To Be Relocated From Anambra – Obiano by Surplus90(m): 2:43pm On Jul 09, 2015
Anambra State Governor, Willie Obiano has assured residents of the state that the Boko Haram prisoners who are currently locked up at the Ekwulobia Prison in the Aguata Local Government Area of the state would soon be relocated.
Obiano made the statement on Wednesday, July 8, 2015, after a successful security meeting held with a 7-man delegation from the National Security Adviser (NSA), Sambo Dasuki.
“I want to reassure you that the meeting went very well. The various communities in Anambra, the markets, the car Unions, the churches, our traditional institutions and others made a great point to them that we want this people removed and removed immediately,” Obiano said.
“They have reassured that they will take up our message back to Abuja and that this people will be removed very soon" he added.
The security meeting was attended by traditional rulers, religious leaders, town union executives and market leaders.

Politics / Former Flying Eagles Coach, John Obuh, Takes Over Ifeanyi Uba FC by Surplus90(m): 11:53am On Jun 30, 2015
Former Flying Eagles Coach, John Obuh, has been announced as new head coach of Glo Premier League side Ifeanyi Ubah FC and he will be assisted by German Jurgen Presse.

Both men worked together at the 2013 FIFA Under-20 World Cup in Turkey, where Nigeria reached the knockout rounds.

Obuh who has been without a club since he parted ways with Enugu Rangers last season is taking over the Nnewi club from Bulgarian Mitko Dobrev. The Bulgarian guided the club to the top bracket of the Nigeria league.

Obuh’s appointment was announced to the players by the club proprietor himself after the team’s home defeat to visiting Wikki Tourists last Sunday. That defeat is believed to be the Bulgarian coach’s final straw that broke the camel’s back.

Expectations were high they will beat the Bauchi club to climb to the top of the league, but with the club owner watching from the stands after promising a hefty N500,000 bonus for every goal scored by his wards, “the new Chelsea” of Nigerian football crashed in front of their home fans.

FC Ifeanyiubah is currently in fifth position in the top flight.

The Chairman of Capital Oil and Gas, Chief Ifeanyi Ubah, on Thursday urged the government of Anambra to build its proposed refinery in the state to actualise its petroleum potentials. Uba told NAN in Nnewi, Anambra that no commercial gain had been made from the petroleum potentials of the state because the sector had not been positioned to maximise the benefits. He said that apart from the low production of crude in the state, the prerequisite structure to commercialise production were lacking due to undeveloped products transportation system. Uba said that a top up refinery should be built to give the state an edge in the industry as well as serve the petroleum needs of the state. He pointed out that the state presently did not have access to the export routes and as such could not play competitively in the industry. Uba said such bold steps at the state level could help in achieving national self-sustainability and stability in the oil and gas demand and supply.

“For now, our output is low and we cannot compare ourselves with the commercial producing states and our external export lines, that is, waterways to move our crudes outside the country are not there. “So we cannot export because the river to berth vessels is not there now and we cannot join the consolidation of crude like Escravos that serves as national grid for producers. “Since these structures have not been developed, what Anambra needs now is to strategise so that it maximises what is available,” he said. Uba said that the state could achieve that if it built a top up refinery to internally refine its crude and make itself attractive to other states. “To become a competitive player in the industry, the state must create an advantage like having a refinery; it is possible for a state to build if the person in power has the right attitude. “I believe that Gov. Willie Obiano can do it but it depends on his advisers and the advice they give him,” he said. On the dispute and occasional conflicts between Anambra, Enugu and Kogi on the oil belt which bordered the states, the marketer said dialogue should be employed in resolving the matter. He urged sincerity on the part of the interested parties and recommended a robust and peaceful conflict resolution approach.

“For me there is no problem without solution. What is important is for the states to have a formidable conflict resolution team and the crisis will be resolved. “Dialogue and maturity are important in leadership and getting the right people from both sides to a roundtable with sincerity will just be enough. “Issues like that have come up in the past and they were amicably resolved,” he said. The state was declared an oil producing state on Aug. 30, 2012 by former President Goodluck Jonathan.

Otenestbestyaho:
I am serving(NYSC) in anambra state, ayamelum local govt to be precise. The local govt is 15 times developed than BENUE (my state). The number of cars that ply the road(only in one local govt) here is more than all the cars in benue. Sentiment aside.the thing that suprises me about the area(ayamelum) is the oil discovered in OMASIAGU(close to kogi state), the refinary built there by anambra's govt is bigger in size compared with that of dangote cement company in makurdi~gboko express way(benue). Massive construction going on every day in this area couple with good roads, fine houses, heavy construction with bomb sound every second(bomb is used in construction) but electricity remine a big challenge. I salute the people of anambra state. After my service, I will stay in anambra state, precisely nnewi.
anambra's capital (awka) may not be as beautiful as others (OWERRI,Enugu, asaba, etc) but anambra has d most decentralised infrastructural development in Nigeria (thanks to peter obi's master plan)...it is almost impossible to see a remote village in anambra...this is exactly what u are witnessing...

Politics / Amaechi: Buhari's Victory Saved Me by Surplus90(m): 8:09am On May 15, 2015
Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi yesterday
said he would have been hounded out of the
country by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)-
led government, had the All Progressives
Congress (APC) lost the election.
Amaechi spoke at the public presentation of the
compilation of his administration’s achievements
in Lagos. The book “Dynamics of Change: The
Amaechi Years” is edited by Dr Chidi Amuta and
Dr Yemi Ogunbiyi.
Amaechi said he knew that he would be in trouble
if change did not happen in Nigeria and was
prepared to make the sacrifices necessary to
make it happen.
“I knew I was going to be in trouble. Anything
that would cause that change not to take place, I
was ready to make that sacrifice. The federal
government sent out a signal that if they won
nobody should let me out of Nigeria from any
airport. One day Asiwaju got angry with me. He
was very angry. I went to his house with Mallam
Nasir El-Rufai and knelt down, saying ‘please
let’s not disagree, let’s win first and then we can
disagree’.”
“I lost my passport in Ghana and went to the
High Commission. They gave me a certificate but
the Ambassador was given a query for doing so. I
later applied for a passport and they gave me
green, not red. Now they have given it to me –
two weeks ago,” Amaechi said.
The governor said while his battle with President
Goodluck Jonathan lasted, many of his friends
either abandoned or took care not to be seen
with him in public. He said he was mostly
preoccupied with bringing change to Nigeria and
not about what to get from the government.
“I told Asiwaju that what is important is to make
a history of the first civilian coup in Nigeria when
your children and grandchildren read the history
with your name as one of the people who helped
bring about change in Nigeria.
“I said, let us focus on the victory. I remember
the day of the convention, there were so many
intrigues, there will be convention, there won’t be
convention, I said my leader, if we don’t do the
convention we are finished, the press will say APC
cannot hold a convention, lead us now, there
must be convention and election. So, he turned to
me and said look for Tunde (Fashola), let us go.”
The event which was well-attended by chieftains
of the APC was a time of tributes and eulogies for
Amaechi by his friends and colleagues. Some of
those present included: APC national leader,
Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, National Chairman,
Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, former interim
chairman, Chief Bisi Akande and Nobel laureate
Prof. Wole Soyinka.
There were also Governors Ibikunle Amosun
(Ogun), Abdulazeez Yari (Zamfara),
representatives of Kwara and Bauchi state
governors. governors-elect of Kaduna and Lagos
states, Mallam Nasir el-Rufai and Mr. Akinwunmi
Ambode.
Also there were Dr Dakuku Peterside, APC
governorship candidate in Rivers, Alabo Graham-
Douglas, Tonye Cole, former governors of Ekiti
State, Kayode Fayemi, Segun Oni and Niyi
Adebayo. Others are: Senator Olorunnimbe
Mamora, business mogul and Africa’s richest
man, Aliko Dangote, Bishop Hassan Mathew
Kukah (book reviewer), Justice George Oguntade,
National Women Leader, Hajia Ramatu Aliu,
National Secretary of the APC, Alhaji Mala Buni,
Senator Daisy Danjuma, Mr Jim Ovia and
Vanguard newspaper publisher Mr Sam Amuka-
Pemu.
Prof. Soyinka, who wrote the forward to the book
–Tyranny of Courage- described Amaechi as a
man of principle and strong conviction, who was
willing to stand by his belief at a great risk.
These qualities, he said made him to take
exceptions to his own personal rule not to write
any recommendations or forwards for books. He
also described Asiwaju Tinubu as the “architect
of change.”
Soyinka said: “The political atmosphere today,
whatever you call it, change or hope, or cautious
or careless hope, I recognise two individuals who
led the change. One of them I call him the
architect of that process, he is Ahmed Bola
Tinubu. The arrowhead of the charge that led to
the change is the man we are gathered here to
honour.”
Soyinka decried the incident that led to the
disbandment of the Nigerian Governors Forum
(NGF), praising Amaechi for standing up to his
colleagues for change.
“It is basic arithmetic fallacy of governance when
16 is said to be higher than 19, something is
fundamentally wrong. Governor Amaechi stood up
and challenged even his own colleagues saying,
let us change the orientation of the nation.
Somebody once said to me to tell the young man
that he was going to destroy himself that he
should slow down. Of course I didn’t deliver the
message.”
Bishop Kukah praised the editors of the book for
the insights and ability to document the giant
strides made by the Amaechi administration but
noted that the book fell short on the narratives
about the governor’s background and early days.
He also noted, some contradictory claims about
Amaechi’s days at the University of Port Harcourt
and student unionism days. Kukah also noted
that the book was almost silent about the era
when Amaechi was the Speaker of Rivers State
House of Assembly, a part he noted, prepared him
for the office of the governor. He recommended
the 251-page book, not for the bookshelves but
as a coffee table companion.
Justice Adolphus Karibi-Whyte was lavish in his
praise of Amaechi. “When I first met him,
everything about him gave me a promise of a
future leader, he respects age and status and
analysed situations properly. I was elated when
he asked me to be the chairman because he still
remembers the relationship,” he said.
Karib-Whyte said the governor was key in
bringing all the ethnic nationalities in Rivers
State, struggling for leadership together and
fostering peace in the state.
Mamora said Amaechi is a “great friend” and a
fellow former speaker, he also referred to him as
an “unusual governor who is simple, plain and
blunt to a fault and a combination of mettle, bold
and resolute.”
