Nigerian Drug Law Enforcement Agency has set up a panel to investigate a music video released by Nigerian artiste, Davido, in which he displayed a substance suspected to be hard drugs. The video of his track entitled, ‘Fans mi’, in which he featured an American rapper and member of the Maybach Group, Meek Mill, showed Davido with a briefcase filled with dollars and another bag filled with parcels of a substance suspected to be hard drugs. The Director of Public Affairs of the NDLEA, Mr. Mitchell Ofoyeju, told SUNDAY PUNCH on Saturday that the investigative panel might invite the hip- hop artiste for questioning if the need arose. He said, “I am aware that a panel is working on it (the video). The panel was set up soon after the video was released few weeks ago. “When our attention was drawn to it, we viewed it and we discovered that it was improper. There is no moral lesson in it and he was just advertising drug trafficking. “In the video, he exchanged a brief case supposedly containing narcotics for dollars. He was displaying affluence in the video. If it (the plot) had climaxed in an arrest and possible detention, we would have congratulated him for partnering with us. But the way he portrayed drug trafficking in the video was a means to an end, which the end is a life of affluence which we disagree with.” Ofoyeju said the anti-drug agency would conduct a full-scale investigation into the making of the video and to confirm whether it was censored before its release. The NDLEA spokesperson further said, “We are looking at the issue holistically. We believe that there should be a body that was supposed to censor videos before they go out. Those are the things we want to investigate and verify. Was the video submitted for approval? If it was submitted, why was it approved, with such content?” NDLEA had in June 2013 said controversial Nigerian actress, Tonto Dikeh, risked a minimum of 15 years in jail for encouraging the consumption of hemp. Dikeh had on June 28, 2013, posted photographs of a wrap of hemp and grains of the weed formed into the letters, ‘Happy birthday POKO.’ She also posted a photograph of herself and added the inscription, ‘Mi smoke ganja mi smoke weed while my hatez smoke ma gossip.’ Her picture is a close-up of her face that seemed to depict her in a high state. As a result, the agency said it was keeping tabs on more celebrities in Nollywood and the music industry for drug trafficking, abuse and links with drug cartels. http://yesreport..com/2015/07/ndlea-set-to-probe-davido-over-drugs_12.html?m=0 |

The days when chicken and poultry used to be an exclusive preserve of the rich or a delicacy for Sundays, Christmas and very special festivities are long gone as its consumption has become a huge business and themainstay for several businessmen and women. Ruth Tene Natsa writes on the risks involved in eating these imported foods. The warning by the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration (NAFDAC) that the consumption of imported poultry and turkey products may lead to cancer, kidney diseases and hypertension should be a deterrent to all to avoid such products but not yet as Nigerians continue to consume the products. According to the NAFDAC boss, Dr Paul Orhii, the risk in the products is as a result of substances that can predispose one to kidney, liver and lung diseases as well as certain types of cancers and drug resistant bacterial infections among others. A major disadvantage to the consumption of imported poultry foods and products aside its health implication is the dearth of the nation’s poultry markets as farmers have to contend with low market demands for locally grown chickens which are cheaper, healthier and more accessible. These challenges are further exacerbated by the nation’s inefficient power system which limits farmers’ abilities to effectively store frozen products, poor storage facilities, a low market demand structure as consumers show a preference for the imported products and a corrupt system where criminals in the guise of business men smuggle frozen products into the country at the risks of local poultry farmers. Another report that the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) spent N187 billion on the importation of wheat and fish, among other goods which can be conveniently produced in Nigeria leaves one wondering if Nigerians have a bias for success or development because while our farmers continue to lack markets for their products, demands for foreign goods and services continue to soar, enriching the importers. The fact that Nigeria remains a viable market for the many foreign chocolate testify to that. Unfortunate results of the love for foreign made goods are the loss of jobs, loss of foreign exchange, importation of diseases, as warned by the NAFDAC, poor development of the nation’s manufacturing and agricultural industries, among several others. LEADERSHIP Friday’s efforts to trace the reason for the high demand for imported chicken and turkey revealed Nigerians love for foreign products, demand for quality, a social status symbol, poor manpower development, porous borders, and the get rich syndrome which is only concerned about enriching the importers at the expense of the farmers. According to a housewife, Mrs Nwafor, the love for foreign poultry is the fact that it saves one time on dressing and packaging which the local farmers often do not have the patience to do. “I love buying the imported chicken and turkey because it is usually clean and easy to pick up and cook rather than going to the market to wait for those mallams to kill and dress poultry for you. Also it makes it easier in that one can buy in smaller affordable quantities. “I have never seen locally produced or dressed turkeys and they are usually more expensive if one has to buy the whole. But in the markets, one can buy just a wing or a thigh without fears of emptying one’s bank account. Also, I do not think that our farmers can sufficiently produce all the poultry this nation requires.” Reacting to the health implications of eating the foreign products, she queries, “If they are dangerous, why do the government allow them to import them? These products come through our seaways, they get into our ports and borders and at the end are sold in open markets. If they are that dangerous, why are efforts not made to arrests those responsible; why are they not destroying or seizing those goods in the markets after they have successfully escaped the customs at the borders?” http://yesreport..com/2015/07/eat-imported-chicken-turkey-risk-cancer.html?m=1 http://leadership.ng/news/445934/eat-imported-chicken-turkey-risk-cancer-nafdac |
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Abuja has defied a fresh order for inspection of materials allegedly used for the April 11, 2015 governorship election in Akwa Ibom State as directed by the Governorship Election Tribunal for the state sitting in Abuja despite the warnings issued by the Tribunal against further disobedience of its orders. The Akwa Ibom State Governorship Election Tribunal sitting in Abuja had on Wednesday June 24, 2015 while ruling on an application by the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Umana Okon Umana who seeking the nullification of the sham April 11 election ordered INEC to move all election materials to Abuja following the relocation of the Tribunal from Uyo to Abuja over security concerns. The three man panel of the Tribunal led by Justice Sadiq Umar granted the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Akwa Ibom State, Obong Umana Okon Umana a fresh 14 days period to inspect and conduct forensic examination on the materials from Monday July 6 to July 21, 2015. It would be recalled that on the 12th May, 2015, the Tribunal while sitting in Uyo had granted the request of Mr. Umana Umana to carry out forensic examination and inspection of all materials allegedly used during the election. However, efforts by lawyers and forensic experts engaged by Mr. Umana were deliberately thwarted by the corrupt INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner for Akwa Ibom State, Mr. Austin Okojie who blatantly refused to release the required materials and in some cases, the relevant officers of INEC in Uyo bluntly refused to cooperate, sometimes waiting to receive instructions from Mr. Uwemedimoh Nwoko the then Attorney General of the state who has been just been reappointed in compensation for his sabotaging role during the abortive inspection. Mr. Nwoko had mobilised thugs to disrupt the inspection exercise despite petitions against him to the Nigerian Bar Association and the police. However, despite the movement of the materials from Uyo to Abuja, staffs of INEC in Abuja in connivance with the corrupt Resident Electoral Commissioner for Akwa Ibom, Austin Okojie and other officials of the commission in Uyo have again refused to cooperate with the APC candidate. Except something drastic is done by the INEC leadership the fresh 14 days period for the inspection which started to run from Monday 6 July may end in futility without any inspection by the APC due to deliberate antics of INEC. On Monday July 6 when the inspection should have commenced, the head of legal department of INEC in Abuja by name Mr. Bawa feigned ignorance of the order of the Tribunal and the movement of the materials from Uyo to Abuja despite that INEC was duly served with the order. Mr. Bawa shifted blame to the head of legal of the commission in Akwa Ibom State, Mr. Uche Okorie who he claimed had dumped the materials in Abuja without informing them and that Okorie will be coming from Uyo to Abuja by road on Tuesday July 7. As at 7pm on Wednesday, July 8 Mr. Okorie was no where to be found. To further worsen the situation, the legal team and forensic experts of the APC candidate have been informed by Mr. Bawa that even when Mr. Okorie arrives, the exercise will not take place without the presence the Electoral Officers who supervised the election in the 31 local government areas of the state as they are the ones to present the materials of their respective local government areas for inspection. However, there is no assurance on when the Electoral Officers will arrive Abuja from Uyo. A source in INEC revealed that the whole drama is orchestrated by the Resident Electoral Commissioner for Akwa Ibom State, Austin Okojie in connivance with officials of the commission in Abuja in a bid to prevent the APC candidate from unravelling the massive fraud that he supervised during the widely condemned April 11 polls in the hope that it will jeopardize the case at the Tribunal. The source further hinted that the PDP, former Governor Godswill Akpabio and Udom Emmanuel, the alleged winner of the election were very embarrassed by the outcome of the initial abortive inspection exercise in Uyo which revealed how the election was rigged carelessly as forensic experts discovered how ballot papers were thumb printed in booklets containing several single ballot papers without first detaching them in singles. Sahara Reporters had exclusively reported on June 22, 2015 how the corrupt Akwa Ibom REC had mobilised people on a Sunday to detached the ballot papers in order to cover his tracks. The initial inspection equally showed how the INEC had mutilated and lumped ballot papers of different polling units, wards and local governments contrary to INEC guidelines which prescribes that ballot papers of various polling stations, wards and local governments should be separately preserved after election. Sahara Reporters has exclusively obtained some of the photographs taken during the abortive inspection exercise in Uyo which shows how ballot papers of different areas were stuffed into Ghana must go bags to sabotage the inspection exercise. The photos also shows how fraudulent thump printing in favour of the PDP were done in ballot papers booklets containing several single ballot papers without detaching them. Reacting to the latest plot to undermine the petition at the Tribunal, an official of the APC in Akwa Ibom State expressed dismay over the latest attempt to frustrate the case of the APC by unscrupulous elements. "This is another attempt to deny us access to the materials despite the fresh order by the Tribunal. Why are they afraid of inspection if they do not have anything to hide, the truth is that they are not ready to defend their so-called victory that is why they have been using delay tactics at the Tribunal". The party official stated. http://yesreport..com/2015/07/inec-in-abuja-colludes-with-akwa-ibom.html?m=1 http://saharareporters.com/2015/07/09/breaking-inec-abuja-colludes-akwa-ibom-pdp-defy-fresh-order-inspection-election-materials |
