24th FIFA U20 World Cup Finals: Flying Eagles head for 12-day camping in Chile

Nigeria’s U20 boys, Flying Eagles, have departed the country for Chile, as they countenance a 12-day final phase camping in the South American nation ahead of their participation in this year’s FIFA U20 World Cup finals.

Seven-time African champions Nigeria will play all their Group F matches at the Estadio Fiscal in Talca, a city 250 kilometres from the Chilean capital, Santiago. They will first confront Norway on Monday, 29th September, before clashes with Saudi Arabia (2nd October) and Colombia (5th October).

A team of 20 players and 11 officials (midfielder Daniel Daga will join the team in Chile from his base in Norway) departed from the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja on Sunday evening, aboard a Turkish Airline flight to Istanbul, where the contingent will connect to Santiago – venue of their final phase camping.

The seven-time African champions had training sessions in Abuja for some weeks, before Sunday’s departure.

The 24th FIFA U20 World Cup finals will be played across the cities of Santiago, Rancagua, Valparaiso and Talca. The competition, which started as the FIFA World Youth Tournament, was launched in 1977 and was first hosted by Tunisia.

Nigeria were narrowly edged by Korea Republic after extra time in the semi finals at the last championship hosted by Argentina. The country finished as runners-up in 1989 in Saudi Arabia and in 2005 in The Netherlands.

Group A is headed by hosts Chile, and also has New Zealand, Japan and Egypt, while Group B entertains South Korea, Ukraine, Paraguay and Panama.

Brazil heads Group C that also has Mexico, Morocco and Spain, while Group D includes Italy, Australia, Cuba and multiple winners Argentina. USA, New Caledonia, France and South Africa make up Group E.

Now that international break is temporarily over, I hope NFF and Eric Chelle have rolled up their sleeves and gotten to the serious business of scouting for outstanding Nigerian talents across Europe...a new Nigerian kid just got signed by Monaco and got announced by Fabrizio (I bet NFF don't even know about him). That midfield in particular requires serious attention, fresh legs and ideas are needed now...it's not when the last fixture of WCQ starts next month that we will see the same boring Ndidi, Ekong, Simon Moses and Iwobi etc roll-out again. Majority of these players need to be retired already.

The fool sabotaged the game with that line-up, I winced in anger and knew we were in for a really bad one when I saw Ekong AND Moses Simon starting that game, I don't know why Chelle didn't learn from the Rwanda game and other previous games that Simon Moses is a very limited player who is past his usefulness.

The team that started the second half should have started the first half. A midfield of Onyedika, Dele-Bashiru and Uche/Onyeka would have been solid while Iwobi played from the LW where he does well for Fulham (at a point Iwobi had to play the DM role when Ndidi was subbed out, Iwobi was supposed to be our only creative outlet for goodness sake), and maybe Lookman in the RW. We had absolutely no width! Chukwueze should also have gotten in early...

At the end all we are left with is "should have, would have", cause nothing is ever guaranteed when it comes to these players.

I'm just over it, let's just press the reset button and start afresh with a new generation of players with Bassey and Frederick as the spine of the new players, give me the most exciting prospects we can get from the U20 team going to the world cup (that's if NFF don't mess that one up again with their rubbish and 419 selection). We have to get it right with this U20 world cup coming up by scouting and assembling the best known and unknown Nigerian talents both home and abroad), so that we can start rebuilding and preparing for 2030 with the AFCON and subsequent games next year.

After the Afcon in December a lot of this current players need to be honorable and retire from the team. Ekong. Chukwueze. Iwobi. Ndidi, Moses Simon and a host of others. Ademola lookman too selfish at the detriment of the team

They should retire before the AFCON, we are not winning anything with those players at the AFCON anyway so we might as well clean house now and use 80% of new younger players led by Osimhen as captain and then Bassey and Benjamin Frederick as the defensive core.

If we beat Lesotho and Benin republic with maximum points next month, and South Africa lose to either Zimbabwe or Rwanda + hopefully FIFA 3 pts deduction before that final fixture + the results from other groups vying for that best 4 losers...then we might have the slightest of chances to squeeze our way to the play-offs.

Something that would never have happened under previous generations of Nigerian players, imagine a team with hot-heads like Sunday Oliseh, Jayjay, Ikpeba, Amunike etc bending over to Ghana and SA and worst of all Lesotho and Zimbabwe? Even the Mikel Obi/Osaze set wouldn't have gotten bullied like this to Ghana and SA. We really fell off honestly, surely we need to go back to the drawing board and start afresh, I'm prepared to succeed and fail with a new and younger generation of players who will fight for every blade of grass just for that Nigerian badge and pride. It's time to also convince young players like Ethan Nwaneri to kit up for the SE.
It's time to see what Daniel Daga can do in midfield for the SE.

There are a lot of young players who can add depth and quality to the SE.
