Politics / Igbo Vs Yoruba By Michael Egbejumi-david by tadysmart(m): 1:11pm On Jun 27, 2013
Another 419 practitioner contacted me via my Netlog account today. Like most people, I have become used to getting loads of 419 solicitations through my email. But lately, the 419 boys have invaded my social media (Facebook, LinkedIn, etc) accounts.

It is becoming quite common now to get 419 messages from some ‘friends’ on my friends-lists. These people have ruined my enjoyment of social media. There was one such message I recently got from a ‘friend’ on LinkedIn. The chap calls himself a Pastor. I was so disgusted I was compelled to respond to him. I informed him that he and other 419 email peddlers’ contribution to modern technology is in its ruination. These people are spoiling my delight, and curtailing my full participation on most social media.

Regrettably, some Nigerian commentators – specifically, Igbo and Yoruba tribal warriors - are also beginning to wreck my enjoyment of Saharareporters and other Nigerian internet-based discussion forums.

Every other article, every other published interview is invariably reduced to an Igbo vs. Yoruba tribal cleavage, even when it is clear that most of the jingoists are completely out of their depth as regards the matter under discourse, or have not much clue as to what the referenced written piece is about.

Really, it doesn’t matter what the subject matter is; sooner or later, the Igbo and Yoruba tribal warriors arrive and pollute the whole place.

It could be a write-up on the dearth of rainfall on the Appalachian Mountains; before you know it, the whole matter would degenerate into an Igbo vs. Yoruba mudsling. A dishevelled Yoruba commentator would limp in and might weigh-in with a post that the rainfall in Yoruba land is better than what obtains in the Southeast, or vice versa. Before very long, inelegant and sophomoric insults are being lobbed between the tribal warriors. A proper analysis, a sensible/enjoyable discussion of the write-up is completely derailed. This has become the unfortunate pattern.

The goal sometimes appears to be to see who can spill the most bile, who can be the most uncouth. Often, anonymous nincompoops will unleash crude insults and unintelligent diatribe at redoubtable persons who have over many years made great names for themselves and have brought accolade to the country through their hard work, talent and abilities. Some of these tribal maulers take perverse delight in hauling abuse at illustrious men and women and other high-achievers - persons to whom they could ordinarily not hold a candle; persons they cannot carry their sandals or even jockstrap – before turning the vitriol on themselves.

I’m not sure, but it does appear that most of the tribal warlords are domiciled outside Nigeria. And I don’t quite know what effect that very fact has on their psyche.

I often get the impression that the feeling of dislike between the two groups is fairly deep and I’m not even certain of the genesis of such hatred, such bile. However, a lot of the combatants tend to reference the civil war of 1967, Awolowo, and starved children. Other times, it appears the animus might also be rooted in the manner Zik and some of his NCNC compatriots got bounced from the leadership of the Western House of Assembly back in 1951. Still, sometimes, it seems the enterprising commercial nature and success of the Igbo is a sore point.

Whatever. But giving the level of venom thrown back and forth between these tribal warlords online, I sometimes wonder whether some of these people might actually deliberately harm each other in real life. It often seems to me that an Igbo worker might deliberately sabotage his Yoruba colleague’s effort at work if the chance presents itself, and vice versa.

Ironically, these two nation-groups are Nigeria’s most dynamic. They are great tribes. They have contributed immensely to our collective development and progress. However, the constant bickering of some of them, their juvenile posturing, their insult-fest, is fouling up our local cyberspace and spoiling the fun for the rest of us.

Moreover, over the years, due to migration and movement, educational pursuit, and the NYSC scheme, there has been, and continues to be a lot of inter-marriage between these two great peoples. But I wonder today what some of the offspring from such union make of the hang-ups of some of their adults who persist in dressing one another in clumsy and garbage tribal stereotypes. I can only imagine the confusion of some of those youngsters.

But the internet tribal warriors are not paying any attention. They revel in their nuisance. They toss about their oxymoronic phrase du jour: ‘educated illiterate’ like it is candyfloss. All sorts of degenerate stereotypes are hauled at each other to prop-up a warped point of view. Paradoxically, most of them fail to see – or are too thick to realise that their very action, their utterances are actually injurious to whatever tribal cause or honour they assume they are championing or defending.

And so, just as I have learnt to skip most unknown emails and those unsolicited ‘kind greetings’ messages I often get on my social media pages, I am beginning to learn to give some Nigerian discussion forums a wide berth because of Igbo/Yoruba incessant and obnoxious display of tribal pettiness.

Come to order boys, or you are proving right Samuel Jonson when he pronounced that patriotism is the last refuge of a scoundrel…

Islam for Muslims / Re: How Muslims Can Teach Non-Muslims About Islam by tadysmart(m): 1:26am On May 04, 2013
deSika: yes non muslims have lots of questions. one of the ways you could teach them about islam is by responding to their questions. by so doing u dispel wrong notions and replace with the right knowledge.

questions like the following
how can muslims show a non muslim how islam was practised before Mohamed. how did the early muslims worship their God.pls show with proofs
1.. did thay recite the shadadah
2. did they believe in one God (Allah).
3. did they beleive that Mohammed is his prophet. (seal of the prophets)
4. did they pray five times a day
5. did they pay zakat
6. did they fast during the ramadan
7. did they go to Mecca for pilgrimage and what did they do when they went there

it simple no long story, and you know what I mean.

this is islam as practised by todays muslims. was it this same islam that the muslims practised before Muhammed. did the early muslims worship their God as highlighted in the above points.

i ask this question because i believe that when u make a statement you should be able to provide proofs.
Muslims have always said that Islam had existed before Muhammed came into the scene.

now in responding to these questions u must show proofs from Allah's word the quran. u are free to run to the "corrupted book" for help as long as u can prove that Allah was what they were worshipping and not Yahweh. (Nb Allah is not same with Elohim/Yahweh because it has not be proven yet. see this thread for reason why
www.nairaland.com/1256820/prove-me-allah-yahweh-same#15276612)

if u can answer the questions with proofs then u have bin able to educate a non muslim. IF U CANNOT then the statement that islam existed before the prophet is an assumption and a false one at that.
#remember u r educating non muslims.
Education / Re: 3rd Class Degree, Or No Degree At All: Which Is Better? by tadysmart(m): 6:56pm On Mar 10, 2013
My sadness grows each time I reread Emenyonu’s essay or recall my personal experiences with students who wanted grades that cast them as excellent, but who were loath to do the requisite work. As Emenyonu stated, many students of tertiary institutions “are receiving no
worthwhile education at all,” their sponsors “paying for their
children to be duped by lecturers and if they learn anything at all, it is
experiencing first hand how to camouflage appearance for reality.” Emenyonu continued: “The
sharp ones among them are receiving their first orientation into obtaining
goods, laurels, and wealth by false pretences, alias, 419. However, the
most irreparable harm done by ‘Sorting,’ is that Education is being
mirrored as inconsequential in the development of a nation; the degrees we
award have no value and the years spent in institutions of higher learning
are irrelevant, and rigor as a crucial virtue to be acquired in the course of one's education is an avoidable and unnecessary self imposed
 hardship.”

Therefore being aware that the writer is absolutely correct I do not place or attach any importance to first class graduates.

Politics / Re: El-Rufai's 'The Accidental Public Servant' Book Launch (Pictures) by tadysmart(m): 8:49pm On Feb 07, 2013
the coming weeks will be interesting. My popcorn please.
Politics / Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar Reply El Rufai Accidental Public Servant by tadysmart(m): 2:59pm On Feb 07, 2013
It amazes me that el-Rufai can pass off fiction for self-gratification at the expense of truth as a book.

El-Rufai’s attack on my person is to say the least not surprising considering that this is the same man who has notoriety for disparaging religions and their icons, including lately Jesus Christ.

If he could go to such irreverent extent to disparage religious icons, who is an ordinary mortal like me?

It is my belief that any man that can cross the boundary of reason and decency deserves prayers rather than anger.

I wish to state that the book is as a collection of fiction, half-truths, exaggeration and reflection of selective memory.

I am particularly piqued by the claim of el-Rufai that he had almost resigned as the former Director General of the Bureau of Public Enterprises (BPE) because of alleged persistent pressure and interference by me as Chairman of the National Council on Privatization.

It is curious that the former FCT Minister forgot so soon what he said at the Senate Public Hearing on BPE August 8-13, 2011. That committee, which did an amazing work, was headed by Senator Ahmed Lawan.

We need to recall el-Rufai as saying he had special relationship with former President Obasanjo, which gave him direct access and the discretion to bypass the Council on Privatization then headed by me in order to get the approval of the President.

I wonder how el-Rufai could reconcile his threat of resignation with the accounts he told the Senate about the latitude of freedom he enjoyed at BPE because of his closeness to former President Obasanjo.

In that testimony, el-Rufai told the Senate that, and I quote: “Thank you very much Distinguished Senator. Mr. Chairman, as a matter of principle Mr. Chairman, I am reluctant to judge my successors. So, whenever I do a job, I move on; I don’t comment on what my successors have done. All I can say is this. Mr. Chairman, if you go through my tenure in BPE, you will see that we try to do everything by the rules, by the book. And we resisted every attempt at political interference. There is a process; step by step. Privatization is a mechanical process. Once you have the process published, every step should not be missed. And there was never a time that we deviated from that process.

“We took everything we did to the privatization council. That’s how we ran the place. And I swear to God, I am under oath. Except for one time that the vice president called me and said; look I’ve got calls from A and B to help this guy win this, I said Mr. Vice president you know the rules, tell him to bid the highest price because the highest price wins and he said yes I know, I am just telling you in case they contact you. And I don’t want them to say I didn’t pass on their requests. That was the only time. But no one tried to interfere with my work. There were attempts to block it. President Obasanjo blocked the privatization of Nigeria airways practically. Okay because Kema Chikwe will go and tell him stories. And what is the result today. The company is dead.”

The claim by el-Rufai that former President Obasanjo went on bended knees before me to seek his cooperation for second term bid in 2003, is a figment of his own wild imagination.

Such claim lacks any credibility because Obasanjo and I were alone together behind closed doors.

I wonder whether el-Rufai was a fly on the wall to discuss the details of a private meeting between the two of us.

I believe that rather than el-Rufai feeding the public with such fabrications, the former Minister should have provided or quoted the authority for such claim since he was not at the private meeting between former President Obasanjo and me.

Mark Zuckerberg announced that

too stressful.
“Facebook has gotten out of control,”
reportedly said Zuckerberg in a press
conference outside his Palo Alto office,
“and the stress of managing this

put an end to all the madness.”
Zuckerberg reportedly went on to
explain that starting January15th,

their Facebook accounts. That gives
users (and Facebook addicts)a year to
adjust to liwithout Facebook.
“After January 15th, 2013 the whole

Affairs at Facebook. “So if you ever
want to see your pictures again, I
recommend you take them offthe
internet. You won’t be able toget
them back after Facebook goes out of
business.”
Zuckerberg said the decision to shut
down Facebook was difficult, but that
he does not think people will be upset.
“I personally don’t think it’s a big
deal,” he said in a private phone
interview to a source close to a friend.
“And to be honest, I think it’sfor the
better. Without Facebook, people will
have to go outside and makereal

This line got me interested,it is a clear indication that when the community says no to boko haram they will seize to exist.

Unfortunately, unlike in Kano, Azare, Birnin-Gwari, Rigasa, kuru areas of Kano, Bauchi, Kaduna and Plateau States, all these obnoxious and sacrilegious acts, all these savagery have elicited not a single passive or active resistance from the locals who most times witnessed when these inhuman acts were committed. What I routinely hear is the hollow, emotive and baseless accusations against those that are daily staking their lives for the sake of the nation.

Politics / How To End Boko Haram Insurgency. by tadysmart(m): 8:15pm On Jan 03, 2013
Written by Sagir Musa

Sharing her experience of visiting “Boko Haram-torn Maiduguri” in an article – “Inside the lion’s den of Nigeria’s Boko Haram”, the 2009 co-recipient of the silver prize of the United Nations Foundations prize, rewarded for her work in the Democratic Republic of Congo and also the face of Aljazeera English in West Africa - the indefatigable and ebullient Yvonne Ndege narrated a story of her five days in Maiduguri - the epicentre of violence perpetrated by the armed group Boko Haram. She was sharp and succinctly objective about the situation in Maiduguri in her article -some parts reads - “During my five days there, I found Maiduguri under siege by Boko Haram fighters and the Joint Task Force. The city has been enmeshed in road blocks, checkpoints and sandbags on virtually every major road and intersection. The city was patrolled by heavily armed military personnel donning ski masks, poised to fire at any moment”.

She was perfectly right, for there were/are roadblocks, checkpoints and guard duty posts strategically located in identified flash points or red spots in different locations in Maiduguri. Such strategic locations are usually reinforced with sandbags to serve as cover, protection or parapet from terrorist fire. What Yvonne failed to observe and report was the checkpoints and roadblocks were not sporadic or wide spread as to cover all the nooks and crannies of Maiduguri metropolis. Areas without static deployment are often covered with mobile patrols. And that in terrorist environment, no amount of troops’ presence can guarantee ideal security since terrorists always maximize the use of surprise to circumvent counter measures. Even though there are road blocks, checkpoints, guards, poor detection devices and mobile patrols the elements of surprise can still be employed to overwhelm the human factor and undermine the hard ware in a fortified security system. Time as is said, is the terrorist’s best friend and even a well protected and hardened target will experience slackened security measures during long periods of terrorists’ inactivity. Unless a suicide attack is planned, terrorists will want to strike when security is lax. That might explain many terrorists’ attacks in several places in Nigeria and Borno State in particular. Hence, troops are trained to be more watchful during terrorists’ inactivity. My concern is strongly about the incessant callous, brutal, barbaric and impious killings of people in some states of the North -Eastern parts of Nigeria particularly in Maiduguri. More worrisome is the inhuman way the terrorist perpetrates their dastardly acts ranging from outright shootings, macheting and slaughtering of their victims using knives and sometimes saw machines from the back of the victims’ necks till the heads are severed. In some cases, victims’ throats were savagely slashed. Recall, in April 2012, seven persons were in the day time shot dead in Monday Market. In July 2012, nine construction workers working at Shehu of Borno’s Central Mosque were massacred, 2 Indians shot dead in their factory and a suicide bomber strapped with explosives detonated bombs very close to the Shehu of Borno and the Deputy Governor of Borno State immediately after the Friday congregational prayer; - five people lost their lives, four civilians and two soldiers were seriously injured. Similarly, three security guards in Gombaru ward, a respected elder statesman retired Maj. Gen. Muhammadu Shuwa and a business mogul Alhaji Girgir were in the day time separately shot dead at different locations in Maiduguri metropolis, so also five people were recently slaughtered in Musari community located at the outskirt of Maiduguri. Many security personnel lost their lives through IEDs and ambushes perpetrated by Boko Haram Terrorists. The IEDs were buried in the middle or by the road sides and detonated on the unlucky mobile JTF’s troops on sight. These killings mainly occurred in the day time with many committed in the markets, worship centres and in family homes. It is normal that in an effort to stem crime and criminality, some communities in Nigeria have since devised neighbourhood surveillance, alarm system and other resistance measures to assist themselves and security agencies in combating insecurity in their respective domains. This aspect is totally lacking in most crises pruned states of North Eastern Nigeria, particularly in Borno State.

Therefore, there is the need to remind the local communities to rise to the daunting challenge, to henceforth resolve to resist attempts to annihilate their communities by pre-empting terrorists acts by way of giving timely and accurate information to security agencies and where possible to actively react to this madness since the Task Force/ security agencies cannot be everywhere at the same time. Just yesterday, while briefing newsmen in Owerri, the Commissioner of Police Imo State said - “A retired police officer, who resides in Owerri, was arrested for armed robbery on 29 December, 2012… He was caught red handed when he broke in to the home of his victim with a loaded locally made double barrel gun; his supposed victim disarmed him and quickly raised alarm that attracted his neighbours”. This feat can be replicated anywhere especially where there is putative religious and conscientious commitment amongst the people. I, therefore, posit that whatever the case, combating Boko Haram’s insurgency will require military, political and communal solutions.

Lt. Col. Musa is spokesman of the military’s Joint Task Force in Maiduguri.

Fasakin talks about the death of corps members in the 2011 post election violence.

The Congress for Progressive Change, CPC, spokesperson, Rotimi Fasakin, has said that some of the people who died in the 2011 post election violence were not university graduates participating in the mandatory National Youth Service Corps.

In 2011, immediately after the presidential election, some electorates, mostly CPC supporters took to violence to express their dissatisfaction with the election result. In the process, at least 50 people including nine serving corps. members in the state were killed,

The nine corps members were Adewumi Seun (Ekiti), Teidi Tosin (Kogi), Adowei Elliot (Bayelsa), Okpokiri Obinna (Abia), Gbenjo Ayotunde (Osun), Ukeoma Chibuzor (Imo), Nwazema Chukwuonyerem (Imo), Adeniji Jehleel (Osun) and Akonyi Sule (Kogi).

In continuation of PREMIUM TIMES interview series, Mr. Fasakin, speaking as regards the violence that erupted, said “some so called (NYSC) members were murdered, but in actual fact some of these people are IT consultants”.

He said his party traced one the victims through his facebook page and found out that “he graduated from UNN in 2006 where he studied computer science and is also a manager at a computer firm in Lagos.”

The governors say the security agencies working in the area should not to despair

The Northern States Governors Forum, NSGF, has condemned the spate of explosions rocking the nation and has urged security agencies working to restore normalcy in the region not to despair.

Chairman of the Forum and Governor of Niger State, Mu’azu Aliyu, said this in reaction to the latest gun attack of the Evangelical Church of West Africa, ECWA in Piri, Potiskum Local Government of Yobe State on Christmas day.

The perpetrators of the attack are yet to be identified.

“The forum is deeply pained by the fact that the perpetrators chose a holy day (Christmas) to carry out such a dastardly act which left scores of worshippers dead and many others injured,” said a statement signed by Mr. Aliyu’s spokesperson, Danladi Ndayebo.

The statement urged the security agencies not to be discouraged by the activities of terrorists, emphasizing that the nation would forever remain grateful to the military and other security agencies for the successes recorded so far in the war against terror.

The forum reiterated its commitment to continue to work closely with the federal government in finding a lasting solution to the security challenges confronting the nation.

caseless: na so i see am ooo....they are too wide-mouthed, they talk alot....haba!

This wide-mouth is not only limited with our own secret agent. Take for instance,Osama was killed CIA divulged the strategy used in locating Osama. Claimed they use health aid worker, today health aid workers are targets of Taliban in Pakistan, however I expect them to have learnt their lesson from Ametican mistake, hence am not absolving them of wrong doing.

caseless: Must this anonymous sources always tell people the tactics they use in every operation? So, they did when Abu dardar(bh) was arrested, they did that with faruq lawan and otedola, now mama iweala's kidnappers.

Letting everything out might jst give this criminal a hint and make them to apply cautious whenever they want to get ransome/bribe from their victims.

When they said 'they used signal of fone abu dardar used in making calls to track him'....this landed the telecommunication companies in trouble. U all knw how their masts are being attacked in maiduguri and yobe, the bomb attack at their respective centers in kano, jst recently. Who knws, the bank/staffs that gave the info might be attacked by other members of the gang who are on the run.

This is the reason why people don't give info to our security agencies, cos they'll come to national tv and tell the whole world that u gave them the info. Who wan take that kain risk?

SSS shld do their work, they dont need to tell us how they do it...that's what intelligence/intelligence gathering is all about.

Religion / Re: Is the Catholic Church the One And Only True Church? by tadysmart(m): 4:55pm On Dec 08, 2012
striktlymi:

Good evening,

I really do not like commenting on matters that have to do with a particular church cause I see this as dividing the body of christ. But I couldn't help but say my bit cause I think you have been misinformed about what the view of the Catholic church concerning other christians is. I guess this misinformation came about because you might have spoken to some "over zealous" catholics whom I want to believe meant no harm.

It is true that Catholics believe that the Catholic church is the one true church and this claim they have tried to back up by given a long chain of unbroken succession of popes right from the days of the Apostles with St Peter being the first. But it is not true that the Catholic church believe that members of other denominations are on their way to hell.

Catholics bellieve that when Christ made that solemn promise to Peter and his church, he was actually referring to all who would come to believe in Christ and become members of his body. For someone to be a member of the body of Christ, that person has to be "born again" i.e he has to be born of water and the spirit. Hence when Christ talked about his church, he actually meant the community of believers.

Christ intended his church, or better still, his body to be one just as he and his father are one. He prayed for this at the Garden of Gethsemane. But sadly, instead of having just one community, we have a whole lot and more are springing up everyday.

You took words from my mouth.

Gbawe:

Indeed. The likes of Nnaji are good guys , too willing to serve their nation to the extent they ignore how their employer is an appointee of the system that revels in failure for the masses and stupendous wealth and overwhelming control for the few 'insiders' and "owners of Nigeria". Nnaji is supposed to defeat Atiku (Mikano) and other Vultures like Otedola when his last line of defense is a highly corrupt President sponsored into office to protect the interest of the "business as usual" crowd?

Prof Nnaji, you are a patriotic man but you were always fighting a losing battle as some of us concluded ages ago. You were a pawn in the wicked game vacuous opportunists deceived you with - all in the effort to pretend they are seeking solution while they deepen the problem. You are now a victim of the treachery of Nigerian politics that means corrupt Presidents, sponsored by saboteurs, deploy credible folks like you to add gloss to their regime while the real intention is that you never succeed. Just ask Tai Solarin et al.

Seems GEJ is allergic to good performance. The only minister we could say we feel the impact of his effort.
