Bros,

this is my little and candid advise

No University will grant you admission for Msc with HND. Your HND is as good as a University entrance qualification in Germany. am so sorry bro but at this point, you have to take away the fantasies and face the real music.

Start bracing up for next summer Bachelors application which will start from September. apply for ielts, gather your transcript, search for schools and differentiate the ones with direct application and Uni-assist

register on uni-assist platform and get prepared.

Good luck bro

Mein zwei loffel !

Nice one. My worry: Some schools with bachelor programme taught in German do require german language certificate. Does it means that one has to have learned German and acquire the certificate before putting forward applications?

Bro, did u use a sponsorship letter or blocked acct?

I didnt use any of both. I'm actually going for a 3-month research at the University of Hamburg; a prelude to my Phd which i hope to commence after the 3 months stay. My host will be paying me 1000 Euro monthly for the period of stay. It was written boldly in the letter of invitation. So i didnt need to show forth any sort of financial muscle; just my credentials, required documents and proof of work experience.

Err, I just had my interview a couple of hours ago undecided I doubt and would be unhappy if I received an email by now.

I have no idea how long it will take, the embassy does say it takes between 6-8werks for them to make their decision, I've heard some people getting responses a month later though.

Cool. I'll wait patiently. Fasting and prayer mode activated!

OK,

So first of all I am not used to Lagos at all. So I was a bit frustrated this morning.

Anyhow, I get to the embassy after trekking for 5 minutes (jjc behavior). And then I have to wait at the gate because some man caused an issue with his parked car. After they are done I finally get cleared by the one you guys call 'the fair Igbo man' who makes an error and ends up sending me to the wrong place. He attaches a paper to my appointment letter (ie email printout) saying i was for short term visa. I tried explaining but he refused to listen to me.

After the security check I get ushered once again no one listens and I end up inside the main building with other short term visa applicants. After waiting for an hour plus I get to see an interviewer who finally listens to me and sends me to the right place (back at the entrance).

I was confused and hungry (I still am Sha) tired. Luckily I was the only other (I think) student visa applicant so in three minutes I was called to start.
I was interviewed by what you guys have dubbed 'the Chinese looking woman' (nothing Chinese about her.)
She was really nice and understood I was disgruntled and confused so she took her time with me. The other lady 'the old mean one' wasn't around. (Yay!!!!)
Anyhow so she asks for my original documents then tells me to arrange the copies in two piles. I believe it is best to do this before you get there so you save time. (Have 3 sets of documents, the originals and two photocopies).

So to the interview-she asked me random questions at a point I even felt she wasn't listening to me but mind you she is typing your answers WORD FOR WORD.
So basically I was asked (in no particular order)
-What are you going for in Germany?
-Masters or Bsc?
-What did you study in undergrad?
-Why?
-What are you studying for masters?
-What are you going to do after studying?
-Does Germany have a President?
-Who?
-Who is the Chancellor?
-What do you know about Germany?
-Population?
-How many states, name them
-What do you know about Hamburg?
-Population?
-Where is your school?
-What is the capital city in the state you are going to?
-Who is your sponsor?
-What is his monthly/annual income?
-Germany's neighboring countries, name them.
-How many semesters is your course?
-Tell me ALL your courses (know this in your head biko).
-Where are you going to stay?
-What have you done to prepare yourself for studying in Germany?
-What is the name of your Uni?
-What did you submitt for your application?
-How did you submit the application?
-Are you married?
-Do you have children?

So yeah that was it, after that she told me to sit down and wait for my passport. I got it stamped and had the D written on it too and was told they would contact me by email.

PS: feel free to wear jeans.
Please do not be even one minute late, be there at least 30minutes before your appointment time.
The Igbo dude said he isn't going to play with anyone tomorrow/next week.

Hope it helps someone

Great. Wish you the best. I had my interview a week ago albeit going for a 3-month research stay. I was told i will be contacted through mail. Waiting anxiously. Scheduled to travel by July. You got any mail yet? You have an idea how long it will take to get a response/mail? please keep me posted. I'd appreciate. thanks

for masters students..the estimated cost (according to survey) is about 670 euros per mth... thats 8000 euros a year and 3 years is about 24 000 euros...mind you most phd programs normally extend to the 4th yr to enable candidates to finish their dissertation......this estimate is for an average nigerian( person when sabi manage..if u manage wel u fit spend abt 550 euros a mth sef )

About assistance ...he can offer you a stipend (btw 600 to 1000 euros)...just tell him how much u earn per mth in euros ( thats if your company will continue to pay u same amount if you re on study leave).

This estimate na for only u minus madam grin

I hope this helps..

Thanks. I've replied him. Told him how much i would be earning from company for the duration of the programme, and how much my company would offer as study grant. He promised to check out with the foreign unit of the school and see what assistance they can render. He also assured me of his reply by next week.
Good news all the way, i pray!

<I'm presently discussing terms with my proposed supervisor. He wants to be sure if i can cope in Germany self-sponsored. He asked me how much do i think i would need to cover my living expenses for the duration of my Phd programme (3 years). He's also offering some assistance.

So, guys, pls, especially those in Germany, How much do you think i would need monthly to survive over there in Germany. Please give me numbers. Thanks.

....Congrats first and foremost....getting a supervisor for a phd thesis from naija is not that easy..
About funding ...Most phd in germany re paid jobs....ie 50 % or 75% Tvl 13...in your case where your scholarship application has been turned down by daad...I think the best option is for you to ask your supervisor if funding option is available(some work groups can fund a phd candidate, if the work group cant...they may recommend the candidate to graduate school for funding or industrial partners) if you re funded by a research group you may be asked to offer some service in return like teachjng assistant or so.....if this idea does not go through then present your study leave as funding option for the now because it is quite difficult for schools to admit a self funded phd student because they dont want a scenario where you become stranded financially.
you cant withdraw the 8k euros once....just 670 per mth.....
You can use your establishment as the sponsor for the phd(my opinion...you just ve to package it properly ...paid study leave or it will make more sense if you re working in your field..example an engineering firm sponsoring you for a Phd in engineering) but if you fail to secure funding here in germany ( then you ve to clarify with the embassy in nigeria if they will accept that)
Secure this phd first...your babe can always tag along .if you secure good funding..phd candidates can come with their wives or better still they can apply for reunion ...but it depends on how much you earn as stipend...
Check out this site for more options on funding

All the best bro......

Thanks. The depth of my appreciation is boundless. You guys rock!
I think i feel much better now. Your suggestions/opinions have been helpful. I would keep you all posted as i proceed with the whole process. One more thing though, if i present my employer as my sponsor, would i still need to open the blocked account? Would i also need to go to the embassy with any account statements? Either mine of my employer's? #..@Cindino20: Are you in Germany? Cheers.

For Q1, you will only be able to withdraw certain amount of money per month from ur block account, i think about 600euros. So you'll need to structure ur repayment plan for the borrowed money as well as ur living expenses.

For Q2 & Q3, once the sponsor is not a German resident with required amount of monthly income, no other person can stand as ur sponsor. However, if u've got the money (borrowed, gift or personal) just open a blocked account and drop it there... you're good to go and nobody will ask u how u got d money.

For Q4..... others with genuine info to help out.

Alles gute!

Thanks @Adexhat: I feel better with your response. More info & suggestions welcome pls. Cheers!

<Taiwo>

Thanks everyone for keeping this thread alive. I must confess, I've had a swell time reading through all the infos, suggestions, and opinions of everyone. Good job guys.

I am looking forward to starting my Phd in Germany this year - specifically at the University Of Hamburg. Luckily, I got a Professor, who agreed to supervise my research. I later (around October last year) put in for a scholarship/research grant through DAAD. Few hours ago, I got a mail that my application has been turned down. So sad!

Not to feel bad, I have made up my mind to go ahead with the application self-sponsored (I can't afford to miss this opportunity of getting someone to supervise me, its priceless). Because, from my findings, tuition is free, I only have to pay semester contribution of about 300Euro then other living expenses which I think I can pull through considering the fact that I'm gainfully employed here in Nigeria and I'm due for a study leave with pay (meaning my salary would continue while I'm studying). There's also a huge possibility of getting a job (as research assistant or something related) over there while the programme is on. I also intend to apply for several funding opportunities during the course of the programme.

I intend to submit my application online over this weekend.

My questions are:

1. The cash I'm going to deposit into the blocked account, can it be withdrawn in full later? (Assuming I borrowed the cash into the account and I need to return asap).

2. Do you think its advisable I use my establishment as my sponsor? (Since I don't have anyone over there in Germany that can stand as a sponsor); I mean for the visa application.

3. Do german school/embassy accepts employee as sponsor?

4. Lastly, my babe is also planning to apply for her Masters. She has HND but currently running an online Top-up programme through a UK Uni (meaning to convert her HND to Bsc.) Does German school accepts either HND or the online stuff?

Thanks people. Sorry for the long essay. I say make I pour everything out once and for all.
